45 - 125mm zoom question

2002-05-11 Thread Paul Ewins

Hi all,
I'm currently trying to sell my K45-125 f4 zoom. One of the
questions that cropped up was about a matched close-up lens, that sits in
the lens case, presumably like the one that came with the K85-210 f4.5

My answer was that my lens didn't have one and there wasn't anywhere to put
it in the case lid, like the 85-210 (I used to own one of those). As the
lens came to me boxed, with the lens hood and case strap still in the bags
I;m fairly confident that it never had a closeup lens.

Anyway, while looking at the accessory sheet that came with an LX I bought
last week, I noticed an Attachment Lens for 45-125mm Zoom listed. Looking
at the line up of lenses, there is a 45-125mm zoom listed, but as 67mm
filter size. Mine is a 58mm filter size, as shown on Boz's K-mount pages,
and all the ones I could find for sale (KEH etc) were listed as 58mm, if the
filter size was shown.

The weird thing is that all the K mount lens catalogs that I have (the
little orange K version, the light blue M verson and the black A version)
show a much bigger lens, which probably would be about a 67mm size. Even the
catalog that came with the lens lists it as 67mm!

I thought maybe the 58mm version was the old screw mount one and maybe the
67mm version was a newer version, but from what I can find the screwmount
was also 67mm. What's even stranger is that both lenses are listed as f4, so
all that extra glass doesn't seem to be doing much.

So the question is, does anyone have a 45-125mm zoom with the 67mm filter
size? Do you have the closeup lens?

Thanks to anyone who can satisfy my not-so-idle curiosity

Processing OLD film -question

2002-05-11 Thread Cotty

Outrageously old rolls of exposed film pop up in our household
occasionally - found in a drawer or at the bottom of a closet. I have two
rolls found like this. One is a 24 exp FP4 that I processed normally in
Ilfosol for 6.5 mins at 1:9 and the negs were horribly thin. Shot by the
SO, judging form the look of our son in some images, at least 5 years
ago. Now, this could have been due to exposure errors, but before I
develop the next roll (details below), would there be any advantage of
pushing or pulling development to compensate for the effects of age on
exposed images?

The next roll is at least 6 years old The label on the cassette
indicates it's a roll of Jessop KB17 36 exp @ 100 ISO and was made in
Croatia. I would expect to treat it like FP4, but would there be any
advantage in cutting or increasing development time? Not concerned about
the contents (obviously!)...

Many thanks

Re[2]: A Book Recommendation

2002-05-11 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

What would the other two be? Is OBAP one of them?

yes it is. I'm not sure about the 3rd though. A few years ago when
I started getting back into photography in a big way I found Nevada
Weir's Adventure Travel Photography very helpful, although it's not
in the same league as OBAP or Kobre. Photojournalist with Mary Ellen
Mark and Annie Leibovitz, and the Elliott Erwitt one in the 'Masters of
Contemporary Photography' series were very helpful to me back in the
late 70s/early 80s.

Visual Anthropology by John Malcolm Collier is very good, but
probably a bit too anthropological for most photographers.

Truth needs no ally by Howard Chapnick, and Witness of our time by
Ken Light are also outstanding.

Most of these are less technical than Kobre's book, but the essence of
them all is that working photographers who do the kind of thing that I
aspire to are talking about their methods and techniques, and the
problems they encounter in the field. It's probably summed up by Hurn
in OBAP who says one of the most important pieces of photographic equipment
is a good pair of shoes, an obversation I entirely endorse.

Subject: Quasi OT: An incredible experience plus photography

When I got home from work yesterday my wife showed me that we had a bee
swarm on a tree in our yard. She thought they were looking to establish
a new colony somewhere. It was amazing - about a cubic foot of bees. The
PZ-1p was loaded with Supra 400, so I slipped on the Sigma 70-300 APO,
ran it out to 300 mm. and switched it to macro mode (goes to 1:2). Then
I proceeded to shoot from several feet away. It was already too dark for
ISO 400, though, so off I ran to the nearest store (Walgreen's) and
picked up some Superia 800. Back to shoot, but even still too dim for
f5.6 (@ 300 mm.). After a few tripod shots, I got bold. Off came the
Sigma and on went the FA 100 mm. f2.8 macro. We crept closer and closer
and the bees never bothered either of us. They were completely absorbed
in whatever they were doing. Shot a roll with the macro lens (1/125 @
f4) and called it a day.

This morning they were still there. As soon as the light got pretty
good, another roll went through the 1p with the FA 100 going through its
paces. Then off to leave off the film, and to work. Returning home this
 afternoon the bees are gone.

What a privilege to have seen this phenomenon of nature. The mass of
bees was constantly in motion. As I moved in with the macro, I could see
that groups of them would form for a few seconds, and rub their antennae
together (exchanging nectar or information, I don't know). Then the mass
would swarm over them and the scene would be gone. But all the time new
 scenes were forming.

I'll be biting my nails until I know that the negatives came out okay.
If so, there'll certainly be at least one image posted to some future
 PUG.

Maybe this is more common in other parts. But I live in New Mexico where
even lizards struggle to survive. I felt like this was a
 once-in-a-lifetime shoot.

I'm not sure if Ektachrome 64 is still available. But you're right: it
had a distinctive blue cast. Ektachrome 100S is totally different. And
if you want a slight warm cast, Ektachrome 100WS provides a bit of that.
It makes it look like everything was shot an hour before sunset, which
can be good if everything isn't being shot an hour before sunset:-). But
I like all of the new Ektachrome 100 variants. The 100VS provides high
saturation, but not as pronounced (dare I say garish) as Velvia. Like
Velvia, it's more difficult to scan than the 100S. Here's a scan from
Ektachrome 100VS:

2002-05-11 Thread frank theriault

About 8 years ago, back when I worked in an office, a swarm of wasps decided
to make a hive right on my office window (on the outside, that is). I could
see right inside the hive! It was quite amazing.

When I first noticed it, it was about the size of a walnut, and it eventually
grew to about 15 inches across over the period of several weeks or a month.

I thought it odd that the wasps didn't seem to mind that I peered in on a
regular basis - I guess they knew that I couldn't harm them throught the glass
or something.

I watched the little pupae (is that the word?) squirming around, being
attended to by some wasps, watched other wasps build the nest around the
edges; it was so cool! I'd bring my kids into the office, so they could look
too, figuring it was educational and all.

Since my office was right next to a school yard, I suppose the school board
was worried about the kids, and it was eventually removed, which I was quite
sad about. Worse of all, that was in my dormant years, photographically
speaking, and didn't have a camera! Bummer, eh?

RE: Pentax SF10

2002-05-11 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Ola, Oscar. Que tal?

I used to own a Pentax SF10, my first Pentax AF camera. At the time,
I was intrigued by the two-segment metering and PROCES metering (a
fancy marketing term for automatic exposure compensation ;-). I didn't
like the SF1/SF1n center-weighted *only* metering.

I thought the AF was good, the built-in RTF was good. Shutter speed
below 1/15 goes blinking orange, but that's fine. Lack of depth-of-field
preview didn't bother me as much as I had thought. The PROCES metering
can be fooled if the subject isn't in the center, but the memory lock
comes in handy for this. Using memory lock or in metered manual,
only the central area which is larger than the spot meter area of the
PZ-1 is used which I thought was nice (sort of a poorman spot-center
weighted metering ;-). I got many, many good well-exposed pictures
from the SF10.

But the straw that broke the SF10 back for me ;-) was the lack of
exposure compensation. Thus, when using flash (RTF or TTL external),
it was totally out of control when I need to be in control! It was the
reason I finally sold it and use my MF bodies (MX and SuperProgram) for
a while. Later got the PZ-1.

Hello all.
Although I am not new in the list (I have participated a while ago), I
introduce myself again. I am photographer semi professional, more art than
money. I have used Pentax for several years. PENTAX MZ-50.

Now that I have introduced myself I want to ask for an opinion about the
Pentax sf10 and which is the current price?

Thank you,

Jim,

Try the PZ-1 and its PF functions, you can set the interval to whatever you
want, plus delay the start if I remember correctly.

2nd choice would be the SF-1 (SF-1n?) with an interval data back.

Re: Pinhole Question

2002-05-11 Thread David Dixon

A normal SLR's TTL metering won't be any good for pinhole photography
sincethere's no aperture size feedback to the camera's exposure circuit. A
normal lens' aperture ring operates the camera's diaphragm resistor to
tell the meter what aperture you've selected. With pinhole photography, there will
be no such connection. Metering will be via hand held meter or
Sunny 16 (Moony 11) and aperture will be calculated.

Scott Nelson wrote:

Actually not true. On M and K series lenses, the lens tells the body how
many stops down from wide open the aperture is set using the mechanical
aperture coupler. These lenses do not communicate the absolute aperture.
If there is not such coupler on the lens, the body just reads it as wide
open (which is the correct exposure, because there is no auto aperture on a
pinhole). After all, most Pentax bodies still work with screwmount lenses
(no aperture info) and mirror lenses (also no aperture info, because it is
fixed). The more important issue is whether the TTL meter is sensitive
enough to give an accurate exposure with so little light.

Try this: Take a Pentax K body set on auto exposure, and a lens set at
full aperture. Slowly twist the lens off the camera while looking
through the viewfinder. You should find that although the image
brightness stays the same, the calculated exposure will increase as you
twist. In other words, without a lens or other object to turn the
aperture coupling lever fully clockwise, the camera will calculate the
exposure assuming the lens will stop down when the shutter is pressed,
when for a pinhole, etc. this won't be the case.
Therefore (if not using an LX), for getting correctly exposed photos for
pinholes, microscopes, etc., you need to make sure the aperture lever is
locked at maximum - a T2 mount or M42-to-PK mount both move the aperture
coupler and ensure this is the case.

Thanks Shel,
I picked up a roll of EPP. I'll give it a try. In my former life back in
the late seventies, when I was shooting a lot of transparency film in my
Mamiya TLR, I used EPS, which was an ISO 200 film. I was quite fond of
that. I suspect EPP is a similar formulation. The woman in the store
seemed to think it was more contrasty than Ektachrome 100, and slightly
less saturated with more pronounced grain. That might be a nice
combination for a lot of the things I shoot.

Re: Pentax DSLR: of interest

2002-05-11 Thread W.Xato

I am waiting . . .
I am waiting . . .

I will dump all my Olympus stuff except for the Tamron
lens which should tide me over for a while (17/3.5,
35-105/2.8, 90/2.5, 80-200/2.8, 350/5.6, 400/4 and
500/8)plus the excellent 300/4 P645 ED-IF. Either that
or I can go N*k*n if they go full frame with their
camera.

Hey all -different project this time,

Looking for a source for the Pentax 0.77 reducer/corrector and primefocus

goodies are only available overseas (I know they're available in Germany,
Italy and Japan) but not here in the States. Are there any Pentax dealers on
the list in these countries? Any other sources?

  Thanks,

Advice Needed For Student

2002-05-11 Thread Ed Dombek

Fellow PDMLers:

My wife's god-daughter is going to have her sweet sixteen birthday in a couple of
weeks. She seems to have discovered herself behind a camera at school. She is doing
all the usual things: taking pictures for the yearbook, school newspaper, etc. Now
that the school year is going to end; her mom, my wife and her grandmom don't want her
to lose interest when she has to turn in the school's camera.

For her birthday the ladies purchased a ZX-M, the AA battery pack and a smaller Tamrac
bag. I'm contributing a SMC-A 50mm/f2 and a SMC-A 28mm/f2.8. I'm going to give her a
lens pen, too.

My question is this: Should I add another lens? If so, what? I'm thinking a 85-100mm
but can't seem to find one at a reasonable price? Suggestions? Anyone looking to
sell one? Price is the major factor here.

I appreciate any and all responses. Your input will - as always - be greatly valued.

Rather than expend large volumes on a lens, why not a K1000 (with lens) to help her
learn
about photography. The camera she has is fine, but in my experience, the K1000 is the
best tool of all.

Kind regards

You should have bought a fully working spotmatic, the
lenses are much cheaper for it.
