For the type of shooting desired by the poster, I felt that this was not Pentax strongest area. Since he was going to spend quite a bit of money, it still makes sense to explore all options. Sorry, I have missed first post in this thread :-) So in this case F100 would be probably better choice, but only with AF-S (Silent Wave) lenses. AF motor and AF logic in MZ-S is very fast - probably equally fast if not faster that one in F100. Actually its my second-last day, but its my last day of work here and I won't have internet access tomorrow. Tomorrow's plan is to get to Heathrow early, and try to get a seat with some leg room. I've enjoyed being over here and have had lots of fun getting out about at the weekends. The English weather generally lived up to its reputation: I don't think I ever saw the sun in London. Or in sunny Brighton. Many thanks go to Peter in Brighton and Cotty for their kind hospitality, and to Bob W for trying to make me spend all my money on Leica gear :) It was great to meet you guys even though it did mean having my photo taken a couple of times. I will be in touch when I get back to NZ. I arrive home at 8:10am on Sunday morning (NZ time) after 26 hours of flying. It will be nice to watch the sun rise on the domestic flight if I can keep myself awake. I am hoping for a nice clear morning so I get to see the snow-capped mountains and plains (knowing my luck I'll get to see the wing). Re: Pentax and Minolta on Life Support
Bruce tossed out for our perusal An excerpt from, THE REVOLUTION IN PHOTO MARKETING, PART II - The Darker View, from: ... digitaljournalist.org What else would one expect from an outfit that is riding the digital wave? Anything remotely affecting film in a negative (punny, huh?) way is surely news to them. Just more fodder to lure people over to the digital darker view, IMHO. Digital will eventually meet film on terms other than the immediacy of results and speed/ease of manipulation, etc - but it will be even longer still before the entire imaging scene is digitized on both the source end result fronts. The amount/cost of the peripherial equipment for quality digital is still pretty steep for all but the biggest media businesses. I know that the smaller shops certainly can't justify full digital set-up - and if they try on their operating budgets, they end up little better than a Kinko's type copy shop. The average image customer is still better off purchasing rights to a good medium format (or even 35mm) transparancy and having their 4-color print shop do the digitalization on high-end equipment. There are a few places here that flaunt digital - but none even have dedicated film scanners - let alone ability to deal w/ 120 transparancies other than old flatbed transparancy adapter machines. None even have invested in a decent inkjet printer along the lines of the set-up that Aaron has going - all using consumer printers and I would suspect that many PDML members actually own better systems for their personal use than these shops. They're just riding the wave and selling hula hoops to the masses. A high-rez film scan of a 6x7 transparancy will out-pixel any straight from camera digital file for quite some time to come - I would suspect. Don't get me wrong - digital has its uses and will become adequate for more as time goes by - but it isn't the end for quality imaging from film technology just yet. ... just my thoughts from the hinterlands of the small market Bill - Bill D. re:APS Film
Well, it seems that the general thought is that digital will eventually win out over APS and maybe so. However, there will always be those who will never use digital because of the expense technology. The camera cost is only a small part of ownership... you need a computer to download them to and then a color printer to print them off on. There are those that are technologically financially challenged enough to never go to digital. There will always (at least in my life time) a need for film... 35mm or APS, whatever. 110 was supposed to die years ago and it is still here. I realize that there were many more 110 cameras sold than APS but they are getting old and no new ones on the market. I suspect that APS film will be available (maybe not widely) for a number of years after the last APS camera has been discontinued, which may not happen for 3-4 years. In any case, I expect to get may years of service from my ELPH which I find is a great camera for traveling and snapshots due to its size. By the time APS is gone, I am sure my ELPH will be ready for retirement also. At that point I will have to struggle along with one of my 4 MX's, 2 KX's (black), 5 Olympus Trip 35's, Pentax 110, Pentax Auto 110 or SF-1. Re: Pentax and Minolta on Life Support
I really don't think film will disappear anytime soon. The interesting question is if there will be room in the smaller market for Pentax. In addition, smaller sales provides less RD money, so it becomes hard to keep up. I'm not sure how diversified Pentax is, although I do know they make medical imaging equipment, binoculars etc. I image they could provide lenses for other companies as well. They also have certain patents which they licence without actually producing the technology. Does anyone know where you can look at any financial information about these companies? Re: re:APS Film
- Original Message - From: Bowman, John Subject: re:APS Film My local camera shop sez that Agfa and Konica are going to stop producing APS film very soon, and all the majors are going to stop making cameras for the format within a couple of years. If that happens, I can't see Fuji staying in the game, they only do high volume fast turnaround products. I suspect that Kodak will be the only player within a few years, and they will get out of the format within 5 years. The APS target market is young (median age range 15 to 30) people who don't need the higher quality available from larger film formats. This group tends to share their pictures electronically as email attachments or web based photo albums, and for the most part already have computers, or access to them, and are savvy about the ways of the things. They don't really care about (or even want) paper photographs, and often the print is just a temporary storage medium until they get the image to a scanner. The TV ads I have seen recently for digital cameras seem targeted at the same group of people as APS is targeted to. If they can get digital cameras at a reasonable price point with a good feature set, and that is coming very quickly, APS will go away very quickly. For myself, I look forward to the demise of that hateful little format. It really is plagued by a lot of problems. If APS was a computer OS, it would be called Windows. Re: Last day in the UK
Hi, I've enjoyed being over here and have had lots of fun getting out about at the weekends. The English weather generally lived up to its reputation: I don't think I ever saw the sun in London. Or in sunny Brighton. I expect our summer will start as soon as you're out of our airspace. That's the great thing about New Zealanders. You always take the weather with you. (Sorry). Many thanks go to Peter in Brighton and Cotty for their kind hospitality, and to Bob W for trying to make me spend all my money on Leica gear :) It was great to meet you guys even though it did mean having my photo taken a couple of times. It was a pleasure to meet you. Those old Leicas of mine took some pretty good photos of you, including some at the demo in Trafalgar Sq. Someday I'll get a scanner and reveal the full horror to an expectant world. I hope you're journey back isn't too horrific. Re[2]: APS Film
John, I think that most of us are saying that APS will be supplanted by digital - not film in general. The small number of APS cameras (percentage wise) is one of the key issues. The other is that the most obvious advantage to APS is the size of body/lens combinations. Digital can be competitive here because of the small sensor size. It will slowly die out much like 110. Film will become much more expensive and your choices of places to process/print it will diminish. How quick is the real question. I suspect quite a few years. I am seeing big retailers (Target, Walmart, etc) starting to drop APS - both film and cameras are now on clearance shelves (good buys for the moment), but when those are gone, prices on film will start to rise and as the PS bodies break, they will not be replaced by new APS bodies. The options will be 35mm or digital. Digital will be able to provide at least the smaller size. Hi, Mike, First, welcome to the list. You'll learn a lot about Pentaxes and photography here. The KX is a favourite among many here; I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. You're among good company with that body (not me though!). Anyway, about the specks - I wouldn't worry about them. Unless they are so numerous that it makes looking throught the viewfinder difficult, they aren't a problem. They won't affect the photos you take at all. In fact, cleaning them may make things worse - smudging up focusing screens and the like. There is a way to clean them (I'm sure someone else here will tell you), but like I said, unless they're ~real~ bad, leave 'em. regards, frank Mike P wrote: Hi all!! There is the possibility that the specs ar on top of the screen, where you can't get at them. However, if you are brave Here is how I clean screens: 1) Gently brush the screen with a small camel hair (this part is important, camel hair won't scratch the rather delicate screen) brush. 2) For the very brave: Use low pressure compressed air. Make sure it is well dried air so you don't blow condensate onto the screen. You can blow the shutter right out of the camera this way, so be careful. 3) Reread my second sentence on the subject. A few specks on the screen are best left alone. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Just bought a 35mm 2.8 - any good?
Hi Cotty ... I've several Pentax 35mm lenses: S-M-C 2.0; S-M-C 3.5; K 3.5; K 2.0; and the M 2.8 The M 2.8 is my least favorite, with the 3.5 versions being the favorites. Compared to the S-M-C and the K lenses, the M 2.8 seems a little soft - and that's the only way I can describe it. I find that fine detail is rendered better with the K 3.5 than with the M 2.8, even stopped down. The K 2.0 is a jewel as well, especially if you want the speed, but it's a little big for my taste, being the size of some short tele lenses. However, if you want the speed in that focal length, it's a good choice. Stopped down a bit it appears to be a fine performer, although the 3.5 seem somewhat better wrt fine detail and contrast. But, if you're not making large, wet darkroom prints, and are sticking primarily to digital printing, or are keeping the size of your wet prints to 5x7 or below, the M 2.8 should be acceptable. IMO, it's hard to beat the K35/3.5 when it comes to manual focus 35mm lenses. Cotty wrote: I just plopped down 40 UK quid to a man I've never met for a 35mm f/2.8 - having done zero research first. Personally, I think if you want a shift lens, find a used view camera and a lens around 135mm. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. One thing you should keep in mind is that the distortion caused by viewing things at an angle through a regular lens can be fixed easily through digital manipulation. For an example using very cheap software, see my page at http://ca.geocities.com/spirope/perspective.htm Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Interesting - looking at both Fred and Mishka's corrected images on my screen, they seem over-corrected! Does anyone else get this effect?
