Is it a common problem in all mechanical manual focus slrs? It also
depends on the make/brand/model? For example, Pentax LX won't have this
problem at all, just a guess.

Yes, that is a big lesson for me. From now one I shall always watch it

Rob,

I really like those shots. That camera appears to have a nice lens (I notice
the shot of the ship with the sun to the right had no flare!). Also, it's
nice that you have an area near by with such good photo possibilities.

I wish my dinky OLY point and shoot digital could produce images like this.

I think I've all but decided to pick up a Bessa R2. I notice that I can also
pick up an M42 to M (bayonet) adapter and use a couple of my wide screw
lenses (24mm, 35mm) on the Bessa. Of course, they won't be rangefinder
coupled, but with the depth of field they offer this isn't an issue. I figure
I should buy at least one or two Voigtlander lenses to flesh out the kit.
Most likely the 50mm 1.5 and the 90mm 3.5 APO. It doesn't appear that
Voigtlander makes a 24mm viewfinder but I figure I can just use the 25mm.

Has anyone heard the shutter on the Bessa R2? Stephen Gandy says it's louder
than a Leica but more like a "quiet SLR."

I've had two Winders MEII (I know, not a scientific sample.) Both bought
used. Both went bad. One's death coincided with the death of the ME Super to
which it was attached. The other was being used on a SuperProgram, which
survived.

Based on my unscientific sampling my feeling would be to suspect the winder

I had one of these and found it a good "do it all" lens (one of my PUG photos
was done with this lens: http://pug.komkon.org/01apr/7d006511.html).
The 1:2 macro capability was nice to have, although obviously not as good as a
real macro lens. Overall sharpness was good. The only real drawback was
pincushion distortion at the longer focal lengths. If you do a lot of
architecture you need to avoid using it over 70-80mm as I recall. Construction
was definitely above average for the price range. I replaced mine with a Tokina
28-70/2.6-2.8, giving up some zoom range and light weight to gain speed and
optical quality. The Tokina's much better but also much more expensive. For the
price I think the Sigma is a tough lens to beat in its category.

To make it easier for you I can tell that it also happenned to me. I loaded

thought that there might be something in the winding mechanism that allows

turned out that after I winded from frame 1 to 2, film slipped from the

Doesn't it show any indication for an error while loading just like in
MZ-M. If no, then it is quite irritating because you don't know whether
the film is at all present at the back of the shutter curtain. I don't

OT:Which print film with the most contrast range

2002-08-04 Thread Alan Abbott

Hi all,
My father in law has just come back from a holiday in Austria
(Myerhofen)
And he uses an Olympus 35RD camera (I gave it him to use instead of the
canon sure shot
that he could never get to give good pictures).
The pictures he has come back with are very good. Some would stand up to
enlargement to perhaps poster size.
The problem is with some is that the light was just to bright and the
shadows to dark (to much range).
He used Fuji superia 100 and 200.
Is there a film that has a greater contrast range capability ( don't
know what else to call it).
Practically all his photography is up mountains and either the whites
are bleached or the darks are black.
He does not want an SLR and kit (say he carries to much already and at
79 he does far better then me!).
What do people use for print film when it is bright, lots of UV and dark
shadows?
A tall order I know but perhaps some films are better then others for
this type of situation.
Alan
P.S. My email address ([EMAIL PROTECTED])has be 'hijacked' by a

Re: Leica maintenance was: LX repair update

The comparisom is between the F3 and LX. The LX is 1/75 and the F3 1/80.
Even at 1/60 there is no material difference between the speeds. F3/T's
still seem to be quite expensive in good condition. One problem when buying
used Nikon gear is that you don't know if it was owned by a PJ in a war
zone, or a proctologist.

From: "Len Paris" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
The F3 is a great camera but I wouldn't want to step down to a
flash sync speed of 1/60th again. Though I admit that, if I
could get an F3/T, I'd be hard pressed to turn it down. The FM3
is a very good camera.

Vic, I think thats a bit high for the Canadian market. OTOH, the

FWIW, I picked up a K50mm f/1.4 off eBay last week (it will be

I had that problem once on a Pentax lens - the lens was tatty but optically
fine and I'd got it cheap, it was a common lens so I wasn't too bothered. I
set the lens to close focus so it was extended and carefully lubricated the
mechanism that can be seen inside that operates the diaphragm (I did this
with watch oil or WD40 can't remember which on a wooden toothpick so I could
be very accurate and apply tiny amounts). Hey presto lens fixed.

£ukasz,

1) Bring new batteries with you when you test it.
2) When first attached, the MEII winder may need to wind a frame to align the

3) I have never had problems with the Super A on the winder. The winder yes,

I would suspect the batteries...

Re: Subject: LX repair update

2002-08-04 Thread Pentxuser

Here's a different comparison and one I think fits very nicely. A friend of
mine is in love with Jaguars (that's the cars by the way.) He has a lovely
E-type and a newer Vandenplass. These cars have always been known as more
than a little unreliable. Just keeping the 12 cylinders tuned is a full-time
job. But accoriding to him and thousands of others who love them, the
unreliability and sometimes annoying problems are worth the priveledge of
owning and driving one. Maybe the LX fits into this category. I think their
minor annoyances and, as some would say unreliability at times, is worth the
price of parking them in your camera bag and taking them out for a spin
whevever you damn well please.
It is for me.

I really like the first one, high20.jpg. Something about the tones and
"focus", especially around the guitar, is very appealing.

UGH! I've done this myself!

Rob, I totally sympathize with your plight here. It's a tricky
environment to
shoot in. I've been doing a lot of shooting of bands lately and it's
definately a harrowing experience. I have had good luck simply pushing
800
color neg and, of course, pushing Tri-X.

Here's a couple I got recently of a group in San Francisco. These were
taken
with the LX (with the SC-69), 85mm f1.4, on consumer 800 rated 1600 and

pushed. I didn't use any color correction:

http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/high20.jpg
http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/high202.jpg
http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/high204.jpg

Here's one on Tri-X pushed one stop:

http://www.members.aol.com/bmacrae/high203.jpg

I was able to get some fairly quick speeds out of the LX (1/125?) as I
recall
that night. Most of the shots were wide open on aperture-priority. It
appears
as though your group didn't have nearly the same amount of light on
them. I
was lucky enough to put the word out that I needed more light so the
guy I
knew in the band had the tech leave the house lights at 50% for the
whole
show. This made all the difference. That allowed me to go from a 1/8 to
a
1/30 at center stage. I figured as long as they don't jump around too
much
I'd be OK. I still managed to shoot mostly at 1/60 sec or slightly
faster as
the lights changed throughout the show.

Next time I'm going to try the Portra 800 rated at 1600 and process it

normally and allow the film's lattitude to take care of the -1
exposure.

RE: Leica vs Bessa $$$ (Was: LX repair update)

2002-08-04 Thread David Chang-Sang

Louder yes..
but not as expensive as the Leica

I guess it all depends on what you'll be shooting and what your purpose is
with the camera.
When I puchased the Leica to "try it out" (I've owned both the M6 and CL) I
did so on the basis that I knew I wouldn't get hit much with resale value.
If I really really really liked the camera and what it did, I'd keep it.
The Bessa's would be "keeper" cameras off the bat because I feel that if the
camera wasn't right for you after running a few rolls through it, you'd be
sort of "stuck" trying to sell it used and get back 85% of your money on a
NG or list or even Ebay.

That being said, you can always wait a bit, hunt for a used BessaR2 at some
point :-)

Now that the seed is planted.. I hear the hunting bugle calling me . . .

Cheers,
Dave

Nice lens.
I've had one since the beginning of this year.
Like Alan says "It combines consumer grade construction with fast optics."
After the old manual focus stuff, I wasn't quite prepared for how light and
flimsy it felt. It's proved to be a nice performer though. I've had some
very nice results with it, and so has Paul who currently has it more or
less permanently on his MZ-5n. Sharp and good contrast.
I'm no longer concerned about the build quality. I'm confident that it can
hold up to any abuse either of us two throw at it. It's already had a bang
off a car door which was caught by the wind. The worse that happened was
that the lens cap flew off and dented the car next to us (Yikes! Mental
note to self, don't buy model of car that can be dented by a plastic lens
cap). Can't go wrong for the price, as far as I'm concerned.

Going up north

2002-08-04 Thread CBWaters

I'm getting out of town (That's twice this Summer! Usually don't get out
even once a year :()
I'm going to be visiting my family in Michigan (Cadillac and Petoskey if
anyone's interested).
As always, I don't have any money to spend but I thought, after a
particularly intense "off season" at work and the first couple pre-season
football games are over, I will deserve a treat.
Anyone got a limited or an 85mm for sale for a hundred bucks or so?
Short of that unlikely event, I think I may end up with a 28mm or 35mm
manual to go with my Super Program or a new long autofocus zoom to go with
my MZ-5n.

Just though you folks would understand the desire to have a new lens to take
with me on my trip. Now, to lobby the "war department" for funding
appropriations...

I had an SF10 that a guy had put his finger through the shutter
on. I just (carefully) pulled the shutter blades out of the
track (I recall they attach on the left side when looking from
the back, and ride free on the right side), and then slipped
them back into their path, one blade at a time. The shutter
stayed light tight, and has worked properly for 10 years since
my "repair". I suspect what has happened with yours is that the
shutter has jammed, and so the camera is stuck part way through
an exposure cycle.

You want to remove the battery before trying this on the
shutter, on the off chance it is jammed. You don't want the
shutter cycling with a blade out of the track..

Re[4]: Subject: LX repair update

2002-08-04 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

when my LXs were stolen the insurance company first offered me 3 F3s
with MD-4s as replacements because they thought they were the nearest
current equivalent to the LX. I went to a camera shop to see how they
compared. Lifted one F3+MD4 and decided there and then, based on the
weight & size alone, that this was not the camera for me. They are
real monsters.

aside from weak batteries, it could be the engagement switch on the winder
is not in the correct position. take the winder off the camera and look at
