First of all I want to truly thank all of you from the bottom of my

your prayers for Nicole. It really means a lot to know that people
really care and are willing to intercede for her healing.

She remains in the hospital this evening. They have run the gamut of
tests since yesterday. EKG, blood work, spleen, thyroid, chest x-ray
and CAT scan this afternoon all showing nothing abnormal. They still
do not know what is wrong with her though. The infectious disease
specialist was the last doctor today to examine her and his only take
on it is that perhaps is some sort of viral infection. He said that he
has seen a few patients recently with similar symptoms.
Nicole looked better today, but was still suffering the headaches and
her blood pressure still would drop pretty far when she stands up.
They are going to keep her another night at least maybe have some sort
of prognosis tomorrow. Now that they were able to rule several things
out they were able to give her some pain medication so she was able to
get some good rest tonight. We continue to remain faithful that her
health will be fully restored.
Though I don't actually had the pleasure of meeting any of you folks, I
consider you all to be friends. Again, thank you for your prayers and
encouragement. And may God bless you and your families.

Has anyone any exprience of using the converter with the SMC 135mm f/2.5,

Yes, you can, especially with a Noblex which rotates slower than the
Horizon. You can do all kinds of fun stuff with a swing-lens panoramic

RE: 1.7 XAF SMC Pentax adapter

2006-02-04 Thread Jens Bladt
Yes, John.
I have used mine with a 2.5/135mm many times. I have used it for concert
shots and for long distance panoramas.
This one was shot with this combo:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bladt/41643010/in/set-877712/

The lack of sharpness is motion blur (subject/camera), not caused by the
lens.
So, don't forget that the converter will "eat some light" - perhaps 1½
F-stop.
If you have enough light, it's fabulous.

If you don't a FA 2.8/200mm, a FA* 2.8/80-200mm (both rather expensive) or
a K 2.5/200mm (if you can find one) may be a better choise.

And this panrama was made with this combo as well:
http://gallery13117.fotopic.net/p21530701.html
Try to watch it in full size - it's incredibly sharp - you can clearly see
steel wires rather far away.
I the mittle of the picture (to the right of the blue chimney) is a steel
pylon (for TV broadcast).
It is possible to count the small steel beams inside this pylon (in the
original picture). This pylon is apr. 15 km away from where I was standing.
The beams are perhaps one inch thick. Amazing, don't you think?

The D upgrade will not have too many buyers. This is a plausible reason for
the "consumer" DSLR's that followed.
The next digital "upgrade" is more likely a 645D - appealing to many 645
users. There are not too many 645's for sale at the moment - not compared to
Mamiya- I guess some 645 users are waiting for the 645D ?? There are loads
of Mamiya 645 for sale at ebay at the moment. Mamiya already announced their

Pentax is not trying to "keep" customers with an "upgrade" path. They
seem more inclined to gain new entry level customers instead. Nothing
wrong with that if they can get their name (or Samsung's name) out there
as a competitor for good, compact, DSLRs suitable for your typical
entry-level enthusiast (see also: P&S user wanting less shutter lag to
take pictures of his/her kid playing sport or average person
contemplating EVF type P&S).

However, once they gain these new DSLR users, they will have to come up
with some way to keep them wanting more. some of these entry-level
photogs will want more feature rich, (yes higher MP; even if it is a
numbers game) DSLR as their experience grows. This is what I'm
interested in seeing. How/what is Pentax going to do?

It almost seems that the original *ist D was thrown out there to shut us
up. After all it was the feature-equivalent competitor of the then
advanced amateur level camera like the D100 and 10D. Problem is they
haven't given us a D200 or 20D competitor (granted the D200 was a late
successor to the D100).

Well, if *istD successor would show up this year it would be similar time as
Nikon user's had to wait for D100 successor - D200. And I hope *istD2
(whatever) will be similar in specs to D200 - much faster AF (especially in

Scott, I'm not an expert, but, well...
The Pentax FA 24-90mm is excellent (I'm told), but not too fast
The Tokina AT-X Pro II 2.6-2.8 28-70mm is excellent (I am wearing out my
second one now)
The FA* 2.8 28-70mm is supposed to be even better/the best, but rather
expensive.
The Tamron AF 28-75mm 2,8 SP XR Di LD ASL IF Macro is supposed to be
excellent (some PDML'er have praized it)
(The Tamron 3.5-5-6 28-80mm sucks/less than mediocre)
The SMC Pentax -F 4/24-50mm is a very good and compact lens, if you can find
one :-)
The Sigma AF 28-70/2,8 is "only" rated 3,0 a www.Photodo.com, which is
really not too sensational

I would go for the
Tokina AT-X (I got my latets off ebay, brand new for apr 250 USD - great
value for money)
or the
Tamron AF 28-75mm 2,8 SP XR Di, which is not too expensive - apr. 288 Euro

upgrade from any of the D series to a new D2 if the killer features were
added:

- 8-12 MP APS sensor. Full-frame probably too much to ask for at a
reasonable price level. Must have good noise levels.

- Full K-mount support
- Upgraded electronics (larger LCD, buffer, faster USB, and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
lossless compression in RAW files)

- Ergonomics of the -D (possibly improved a bit, but I wouldn't know)

If those features were added, it would be a very tangible and
tempting upgrade from the -D{,S,L,S2,L2}.

Works great on MF lenses, and is nice on an AF one

the appropriate paper profile into the printer and lo and behold, the colour
charts suddenly start to look the way they should.
I discovered that colour management in Photoshop is way easier to attend to
than fiddling the printer driver to make the colour right.
I suspect I didn't know this before now because I've never had a printer
that actually came with a data base of colour profiles, so I was always
writing my own.

I also made a few 16x24 inch prints using a single istD exposure as the
source, and they look really good.

My 4800 came with a flaw, the paper tray isn't quite right. Epson is sending
another one out to me next week, so I am trying to drain the tanks in this
one...

It is VERY good in my experience.

I liked mine so much, I got another used one as spare :-)
One is almost permanently on the A 300mm f/2.8 and
the other is used with all the others.

Works great on MF lenses, and is nice on an AF one
to reduce the AF hunting area (focus limit).

Quality seems quite good, can hardly see a difference between
this 1.7 one and the two 1.4x or 2x L converters when used on
the 300mm (and 510mm f/5 on the *istD is good for wildlife :-)

Re: OT: Prayer for my Daughter

2006-02-04 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

She remains in the hospital this evening. They have run the gamut of
tests since yesterday. EKG, blood work, spleen, thyroid, chest x-ray and
CAT scan this afternoon all showing nothing abnormal. They still do not
know what is wrong with her though. The infectious disease specialist
was the last doctor today to examine her and his only take on it is that
perhaps is some sort of viral infection. He said that he has seen a few
patients recently with similar symptoms.
Nicole looked better today, but was still suffering the headaches and
her blood pressure still would drop pretty far when she stands up. They
are going to keep her another night at least maybe have some sort of
prognosis tomorrow. Now that they were able to rule several things out
they were able to give her some pain medication so she was able to get
some good rest tonight. We continue to remain faithful that her health
will be fully restored.
Though I don't actually had the pleasure of meeting any of you folks, I
consider you all to be friends. Again, thank you for your prayers and
encouragement. And may God bless you and your families.

Local (Israeli) medicine maintains that if one has a viral infection
only rest and pain killers (if necessary) are worth it. Otherwise, the
patient has to heal themselves... I don't subscribe to this just like I
don't subscribe to many local opinions... Nonetheless, if your daughter
is starting to feel better, it is evidently a good sign.

Pass her our best wishes and hopes that she'll keep improving.

Hi!

I discovered that the built in profiles that Epson provides work pretty
darned well

I see... Happy discovering ;-)...

A question to you... Recently I bumped into odd kind of problem. I
submitted b/w RGB JPGs (30x40 cm at 300 dpi) for print to a supposedly
pro lab in Tel Aviv... They complained that it should've been 400 dpi...
So they said they'd up-res for me... I agreed somewhat reluctantly.

Then the prints came out bluish. Reluctantly they agreed that this was
their fault... So I asked them what could I do.. And they told me this:
they have two machines (one I know to be Fuji Frontier, the other is
unknown to me)... The bigger one is somewhat more stupid... The smaller
one (print size up to 25x38 cm) can be forced to proper black and
white... So I had to redo my files and they came out smaller yet
beautifully toned.

A question - am I going to have to live in smaller print size world
forever? They do publish some kind of color profile on their web site...
Unfortunately all the instructions are in Hebrew and beyond my ability
to read...

Any help would be appreciated.

Boris

PDML'ers,
Please say a prayer for my daughter Nicole. Some of you may remember
the photos I usually post of my grandson; she is his Mom. She was
admitted to the hospital this evening. We do not know what is wrong
with her. She's been experiencing headache, chest pain and elevated
heart rate. She went to the emergency room yesterday where they ran
some tests including EKG which showed no abnormality. After a nights
rest she still was feeling bad this morning so she went to see her
doctor. Their office could not determine what is going on with her and
recommended that she be hospitalized for observation and further tests.
The medical team there discussed further tests including her spleen and
a CAT scan as well.

For panoramas like this, there's no way I could ever focus this accurate

The converter does the focusing (I should have figured this out :-) -

The Oly 4/3 SLRs have the shortest mount register of any SLR on the
market ... 38.67mm. I haven't seen one yet, but it's short enough
that an adapter could be made even for Canon FL/FD series lenses
(42.00mm). That would open up a lot of now ancient and very cheap but
excellent lenses if someone made the adapter.

The adaptation possibility for Pentax K-mount makes the possibility
of an Olympus, or Panasonic, 4/3 camera an intriguing idea. I am
pretty sure that Pentax will eventually come out with their D
followon, probably with a 10mpixel sensor, but if they don't the
possibility exists that a Panasonic 4/3 SLR body with built in image
stabilization could be useful.

But it isn't too bad for me, although I'm no expert either. Well built,
reasonably sharp, so-so bokeh, comparatively inexpensive.

The manual states that you may get vignetting if not at infinity. But
the T/C does not have a great focussing range (trade-off for speed),
so some times you are forced to pre-focus (if approximately).

Essential is more like it.

Epson's profiles are generally very good for their papers. I use the

pretty occasionally.

Hi!

I discovered that the built in profiles that Epson provides work pretty
darned well

I see... Happy discovering ;-)...

A question to you... Recently I bumped into odd kind of problem. I
submitted b/w RGB JPGs (30x40 cm at 300 dpi) for print to a supposedly pro
lab in Tel Aviv... They complained that it should've been 400 dpi... So
they said they'd up-res for me... I agreed somewhat reluctantly.

It's important to know what the native resolution of the printer is.
Fuji's native resolution is 300dpi, Noritsu is 320.
Not sure about other makers machinery.
Most of them have pretty good interpoation algorithms built in. Noritsu does
a beautiful job of up ressing smallish files.

Then the prints came out bluish. Reluctantly they agreed that this was
their fault... So I asked them what could I do.. And they told me this:
they have two machines (one I know to be Fuji Frontier, the other is
unknown to me)... The bigger one is somewhat more stupid... The smaller
one (print size up to 25x38 cm) can be forced to proper black and white...
So I had to redo my files and they came out smaller yet beautifully toned.

A question - am I going to have to live in smaller print size world
forever? They do publish some kind of color profile on their web site...
Unfortunately all the instructions are in Hebrew and beyond my ability to
read...

If they are printing to photographic paper, then the only profile they will
really understand is sRGB.
For stuff I am doing at my lab, I set the pixel count to 320dpi, and then
set the print size to just slightly larger than what I want. The printer
seems to need about 1.4% waste space, for reasons unbeknownst to me. I then
convert the file to 8bit sRGB and save it as a large jpeg for printing.
I can either upload it straight from my desktop to my lab, or carry the
files in on a CD of camera card for printing.

Hi!

She remains in the hospital this evening. They have run the gamut of
tests since yesterday. EKG, blood work, spleen, thyroid, chest x-ray
and CAT scan this afternoon all showing nothing abnormal. They still
do not know what is wrong with her though. The infectious disease
specialist was the last doctor today to examine her and his only take
on it is that perhaps is some sort of viral infection. He said that
he has seen a few patients recently with similar symptoms.
Nicole looked better today, but was still suffering the headaches and
her blood pressure still would drop pretty far when she stands up.
They are going to keep her another night at least maybe have some
sort of prognosis tomorrow. Now that they were able to rule several
things out they were able to give her some pain medication so she was
able to get some good rest tonight. We continue to remain faithful
that her health will be fully restored.
Though I don't actually had the pleasure of meeting any of you folks,
I consider you all to be friends. Again, thank you for your prayers
and encouragement. And may God bless you and your families.

Local (Israeli) medicine maintains that if one has a viral infection
only rest and pain killers (if necessary) are worth it. Otherwise, the
patient has to heal themselves... I don't subscribe to this just like I
don't subscribe to many local opinions...

Up to you, Boris, but the facts are, the only thing that reliably kills
a virus in the human body is heat.
That's why fevers are best tolerated if at all possible, and they stay
reasonably low. A relatively low grade fever (102-103° F) will make the
virus count plummet. Keep it long enough (a few days) and the virii die out!

There are other "medicines," but they are harmful to the body.
A fever is the body's way of killing viruses, and it works! Simple fact.

Nonetheless, if your daughter

It is really pretty basic when it comes down to it, we've been waiting a long

Regardless of the language barrier the lab staff appear to be incompetent, baby
them to get what you want. In other words up-rez the file yourself (though
their equipment should be able to handle it), make sure that you set the image
resolution as they required and save the file as sRGB.

Remodeling drives one (or all) nutso!

Well, we're calling it a new house because it's new to us. Actually it's
an ex barn (built of stone) converted in 1983 and very little done to it

with some slight non-structural changes to suit (taking out a wall here,

RE: Help! - Pentax MG - 2 cameras, 2 problems

2006-02-04 Thread Grunt
Well just in case someone else is intereted I have answered both my question
all by myself. As mentioned in an earlier post the flash problem was just a
question of bending a contact after having removed the top cover.
As for the second question, I came by another MG on eBay which is a REAL
parts camera, basically nothing works, including the shutter which had
several blades out of place. On disassembling it I found the little spacers
are on the 2 posts on the left side that the screws that hold the shutter
box together screw into.
Will now try reassembling the MG... If it works after all this it will
replace my MX as my favourite camera, but the MX does not look too worried
yet, I wonder why.
Grant

Original message ---
Hello all,
I have 2 MGs, the first works fine except the flash. Before taking the top
off to check the contacts etc. I am curious to know how exactly the hot shoe
works and how to trouble shoot it. Am I right in assuming that it is a
simple on off switch that trips the flash by closing a circuit, likely very
briefly? My continuity tester doesn't see anything on a working camera. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

The second MG has been disassembled to get at the shutter box because the
blades were blocked. I took off the rear plate or the shutter box and found
a blade that had some how gotten on the wrong side of the frame separating
it from the forward shutter. I was able to replace everything the way it
should be and put the plate back on... and discovered a little bushing or
spacer laying on my work space. I think it came from the shutter, I was
being careful with the bits as I took the camera apart. Can anyone tell me
where the offending piece goes in the shutter, or if not, any suggestions
where it goes in the camera?

I kept mine after I bought a Pentax 15mm. It's much better for

necessary. It can also accept filters which some may consider a bonus.

For the money I think it's a great performer. Distortion is similar
to that of the Pentax lens. I seem to remember that the sharpness

February 2006 Comments

2006-02-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
A quick review of my reactions to the PUG entries for February:

" Paris, from the Ground up " by Jan van Wijk:: Wonderful! Myfavorite of this
month's gallery. A very effective shot, and it trulyfits the theme for the
month. I was in Paris at about the same time, and tried to take a similar shot,
but unbalanced, and in the day time, featuring the iron work. Jan's shot is
much more effective.
" Sundial shell " by Keith McGuinness: Great Lighting and
effectiveimplementation of the theme. One of my favorites of this month.
" Undone " by Dag Thrane: Another one of my favorites. I love thecolor, and I
love the composition, but the needle really makes this amemorable photograph.
" Geometrical Elements " by BigButt: I like the colors and thecomposition, but
I find the out-of-focus wall on the left distracting.
" Erasmus Bridge " by Henk Terhell: A lot of nice geometric patterns, but a bit
busy. I might consider cropping off the bottom of thepicture.
" Calatrava " by Lucas Rijnders: Nice composition. I know you can'tcontrol
the weather, but it might look better with a blue sky or moreinteresting clouds.
" In the Air " by Adelheid v. Kirschten: Interesting effect with thepropeller.
It would be nicer if you could see the bottom part of thepropeller as well. I
might crop off the triangular piece on the rightedge.
" Freiburg Sidewalk " by Rick Womer: Good interpretation of the"geometrical"
theme, without being too literal about it. At first, Ifound the motion-blurred
leg distracting, but the more I look at it,the more I think it really makes the
photo special.
" Reflections and Refractions " by Thomas Cakalic: Another one of myfavorites.
Very clever, and very fitting to the theme. Great colors, great concept, great
implementation.
" Lines and Circles " by Thawatchai Kongsaktragool: Simple, effective, and good
use of DOF.
" Silver Stars " by Ray Allen: Interesting use of light and shade. Good
representation of the theme of the month.
" Geometrical Landscape " by Harald Rust: One of my favorites. Creative
interpretation of the theme. This shot transmits a realfeeling for the peace
and beauty of this place.
" Fallen Posts " by David J Brooks: Nice use of the logs to lead theeye to the
road.
" ZZ Top " by Janne Käld: Another one of my favorites. Strongportrayal of the
texture of the wood. Very interesting patterns.
" Arrow <- " by Patrick Rendulic: I like the mixture of shapes andthe "feel"
of the rust on the pole.
" Stairway to Heaven " by Robert Gonzalez: Very representative of thetheme.
Good contrast between light and dark areas.
" Playing Around " by Matja Osojnik: Nice colors and shapes. Thehidden faces
of the children add a touch of mystery.
" Bonnie and Sprite " by Joseph Tainter: Interesting juxtapositionbetween the
old western scene and the more modern sports car.
" Obligatory Cat Shot " by Steve Sharpe: I'm a dog person, not a catperson,
but I like the light in the eyes.
" No Title " by luben karavelov: I like the tight crop and theemotion in the
subject.

That came out Fri. afternoon before going home. That's an interface

So it was critical as well.

Do we have a neurologist in the group? I'd really like to interact on

Our prayer is that the pain we were in wouldn't be "wasted".
C S Lewis gives a great treatment of the "problem of pain" in
his works. (He wrote so much more than Narnia stuff.)
"Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins covers this portion of his life.

One of the most encourging of Christian doctrines is the principle
of the "body" with all of the positive implications your can ever
imagine. To this point I've been able to identify around 2,000

OT: 645 - Pentax compeditive

2006-02-04 Thread Jens Bladt
I have been thinking of getting MF 645 equipment that will allow the use of
lenses for Pentacon Six/Exakta 66/Kiev 60 through P6-adapter.
I have found that Pentax is quite competitive economically,
A Mamiya 645 1000s with AE prism is about the same price as a Pentax 645 =
350 USD in used condition.
The Pentax 645 will then have (what the Mamiya doesn't):
Winder, grip, exchangeable film cassettes, TTL-Flash option, optional
Programed AE.
The Mamiya 645 will have (what the Pentax doesn't):
Exchangeable viewfinder.

The Mamiya is a durable all steel design and very versatile (customizeable)
The Pentax is a modern camera concept.

I know this isn't quite fair, because the Mamiya 645 1000s is an older
camera concept. I perhpas should have used the Mamiya 645 Super version. But
in my case (MF)is seems a feasible comparison. I thought this was quite
interesting - at least for MF and film users :-)
