Not according to the information at the WD-40 web site. It was

For this reason (and maybe others) it's not approved for use in aircraft

On the other hand it works really well as a lubricant when drilling/turning

Good site.
I think people mistake the water-displacement characteristics of the product
and think of it as the product absorbing the water. It doesn't...it climbs
under the water to the substrate interface, and sort of lifts the water off,
displacing it and depositing a layer of whatever WD-40 is made.

Yes, it works and well.
However, all caveats about not assuming it's an "apply once and forget about
it" product are totally true.

For what it was designed to do, and then some, it's almost unparalleled,
but...if you want long term protection, choose something else.
If you want extreme pressure protection as a bearing lube, use something else.

Get their WD-40 Book (from Amazon.com) and be prepared to be surprised!

Same formulation everywhere, Rob...

Experience shows it is NOT much of a lube. It has no extreme film properties,
if you need to prevent rubbing or rolling contact, but sliding is not bad, if
you keep the film moist.

It WILL "dry out" which means the volatile carrier eventually goes evaporates,
leaving a waxy, sticky, varnish-y residue, which has practically no
advantageous properties except to stick things together.

LONG time users who swear to using nothing but WD-40 exclusively finally admit
to re-spraying their "protected" parts frequently, to maintain whatever
protection they claim works for them.
Used that way, it works. Sort of...

Of course, used that way, it also keeps the environmental moisture away, and
"works as advertised!"

Don't count on it as a universal butt-saving, all purpose cleaner & lube, and
you'll probably be happy with it.

Sorry, but it's exactly that stuff. I have made a lot of money in the
past fixing things that people "protected" with it. It was never
designed to be a surface sealant: it was designed to be a penetrant
and carrier to displace water, but it is hygroscopic in that function.

If you've got the tripod mount, you've got the F* rather than the FA*.
I wish I had an FA* 200/4 Macro to compare it to, but it's definitely
smaller than the FA* 200/2.8.

Beware: Spraying WD40 on steel or aluminum surfaces *promotes* rust.

WD40 is a water dispersal developed for the navy ... the name comes
from "water dispersal formulation #40". As such, it is hygroscopic:
it's designed to suck up water, and is used to wash down marine
fittings to get the salt water off them, preparatory to painting and
other protectants being applied. If you spray down a steel tube with
it and leave it sit, it will suck up humidity from the air and put
that water into proximity with the metal surface, promoting
oxidation. You're supposed to use WD40 to wash away grease and water
(wash the crud off stuff) then you spray a sticky, NON-hygroscopic
sealant on the surface to keep moisture and oxygen away from it.

I thought you might, 750 GT's and all. I'm on the bevelheads myself, sold Tom
some old 750 Sport spares recently, dropped them off with a relative of his

I'm not sure about the previous owners maintenance, although it did have a
full dealer srvice history. When I got the bike the clutch was the worst I've
ever seen, the flywheel was loose on the crank, the rear wheel bearings were
shot.etc. But it was cheap and serviceable. I've not pulled the
heads yet, I've got a complete set of s/h rockers in excellent condition,
just in case. I like having a few spares around! You're right though, when
the clearences are set properly they last a good while.

I'd agree there, never really had much of a problem myself, had more trouble
with the sockets of spring heads splitting around the ball adjusters.

John

I'm sure it's very good quality.

You take out the seatpost and rub your finger inside, below the lowest
point of the post - a bit of rust on your finger is okay, but if you
should be able to feel smooth, cold steel in there. If you feel
bubbling and blisters, you may have a problem. If it's been garaged
all these years, you're unlikely to have a problem.

Around here, spraying WD 40, or some thinnish oil that "creeps" works.
Spray down the seat tube, take off the headset and spray both the top
and down tubes, and to be safe, while you've to the BB out, spray up
the seat and down tubes. That should work.

Other than checking the inside, if you tap along the tubes, you'll
hear a nice "ring" if they're healthy, it will be a dull thud if
they're rusting. You'll also see (in the latter stages) bubbling and
blistering of the paint from the inside out. Probably too late to
save the tube by then - you'll know to replace if before it severs at
some inopportune time...

And, if you don't spend a lot of time in the snow or rain, it's
unlikely to be an issue at all...

cheers,
frank

I think the original post indicated the backyard is somewhere in
Maryland, so I expect it IS an escaped house pet. The band is likely for
identification especially so a lost pet can be returned.

However, there was a parrot native to North America, the Carolina Parakeet.

Hmm. That seems an expensive way to do it. Given that they really
need so very little maintenance, it would make more sense to me to
just pull the heads and check the clearances/condition of the split

More likely the "build one now" pigeon-hole sits there until an order

I've read good things about the quality of mid'80s Japanese lugged steel
frames. How can I tell if it is rusting on the inside? Just take the
seat post out and look inside?

I told my eldest daughter that we could see "kangaroos hopping down the

It could. In countries and areas like Canada that salt in the winter,
one must be very careful to oil the inside of the tubes at least once
a year to prevent tubes from the inside out (happened to me, while I
was riding, twice - not a fun feeling to have a tube break whilst in
the saddle). Even then, with lugged steel frames, a new tube can be
put in, and you're on your way.

They literally can last forever, but at what point (after how many
tubes have been replaced) is it no longer the same frame/bike?

Oh now we're talking. First bike was a 750 Sport back in 1975, bought a 900SS
in 1980, new. I've had a couple of 860 GT's (ugly, but comfortable) and a
Darmah. The 750 is/was a rolling piece of automotive

Do you by any chance know Tom Rolland then?

The Desmoquattro can be a little daunting to service but I rely on 30+ years
of servicing the older Desmos. I'm looking for a spare pair of cylinder heads
at present so I can change heads for a freshened set at the belt change
interval (2 years).

Re: Moving Up to MF: 67 or 645? Or something else?

2007-08-13 Thread Gasha

I'm shooting with P645 for 2 years.
It is great camera.

You can easy take it with you on long trips:
built in meter is very accurate
camera is weather proof, works even at -10 degrees C.
35mm/3.5 lens is fantastic (got mine from KEH, $340)
Flash photography is ok with 1/60s.
In short - it works like regular 35mm/DSLR, and even more.

(if you install rechargeable AA batteries, then very long exposures are
possible)

OTOH - with P67 i would take my DSLR with me... for metering and test shots.

If you have enough money - get both P645 and P67 :

OT - a little late on the bicycle thing...

2007-08-13 Thread Christian
I decided to do more road biking rather than mountain biking and was
looking for a "new" bike. Then I had the big DUH! moment when I saw the
old Takara Deluxe Touring 12 speed hanging in my parents' garage. They
gave it to me on my 16th birthday in 1984. New tires (the old ones were
23 years old and dry rotted), tubes, bar wraps, clip-on pedals, a few
adjustments and it is mostly road-worthy.

I'll probably tear down the bottom bracket and clean it up a bit more.
The shifting is pretty smooth but the brakes are crap and need some
adjustments. I've done some decent (for me) distance with it, on nice,
smooth, flat Delaware roads.

FWIW -

I have the FA 300mm f4.5, Its a wonderful lens even if it doesn't have a
tripod mount.

Unless you absolutely, positively need the extra light a 2.8 aperture
provides, I find it very hard to justify the extra cost of the 2.8 300mm
over the 4.5 300mm.

I knew I liked you. ;-) Lovely bike.

I rode Ducati motorcycles for nearly 20 years. 250 Mark III, 750GT,
750 Sport, 907IE, 900SS, E900 ... the desmoquattro models were a
little beyond what I wanted, although I had the pleasure of riding
several of them. I had three of the 750GTs, all told, and put 75,000
miles on one of them. The last of them I built up from a neglected
rust heap, it remains one of my all time favorite motorcycles.

In the last decade of my riding history, I switched to Moto Guzzis as
the modern Ducatis became a little more narrowly focused than I
preferred. But I still love the Bolognese Bikes, and was quite taken
with the latest Sport Classic when I saw one a few weeks ago... Now
that's my kind of ride.

Boot up the system on the Mac OS X installation dvd/cd. When the
installer comes up, go to the tools menu and elect Disk Utility. Once
that's up, select the startup volume and run a disk verify.
Afterwards restart the system from the hard disk and check... It is
possible you have a bit of file system corruption and the system
thinks there's more data on the drive than there actually is.

If that doesn't do it, go into iPhoto and see if what you put in its

Terrific shot, Dave.

I like your decision to include the reflection of the street in the
window (I'm guessing it's Danforth Ave?).

cheers,

Re: OT USA warranty outside of US

2007-08-13 Thread graywolf
I believe it is different nowadays. Used to be when the US importers were
independent companies that the US warranty was only good in the US, and the
international warranties were not honored here. Now all the big name companies
seem to own their importer/distributer themselves, so it is not so hard and
fast. Best way to find out would be to contact Nikon USA.

This is the better of the two -- I dont know what version of PS you
have, but there is an "easy button"
for helping with this in elements 5 that I use -- it's in the
Enhancements pulldown menu for lighting
and says SHADOWS AND HIGHLIGHTS - there is a sliding scale for
adjustment... oddly, it
always opens up with a certain percentage done and I generally have to
pull back the correction
but I have no idea why it starts out with the correction it does...

I like this a lot better than your color photo of the jazz singer which
lacks emotion that the title implies.
(hehe, I suppose I should make that comment in reponse to the other photo)
