Re: Q re DA 16-45/4 on Film
Boris, if it helps, I believe the way to go is to hang on to your FF lenses as long as you have a camera that needs them. I still occasionally use my MZ-S (and other earlier cameras too), so I've kept a range of lenses from an 18-35 zoom to a 500mm long-focus which will cover all my needs there - and a few screw-mount for the Spotties and SV too, though not with the same range of focal lengths. But, and principally because I'm going on a three-week overseas trip where carrying a lot of gear is impractical, I've just bought a DA16-45 and a DA50-200, which will be my travelling kit, along with the *istD an M50/1.7 for low-light stuff. That's it - I'm reasonably sure I will have enough coverage and sufficient quality that I won't regret not humping a great range of kit with me! So for both film and digital, I will have dedicated gear, but with the possibility of cross-over where needed/desirable. Incidentally, it must be some sort of tribute to the DA16-45 that the MTF program line in the *istD always chooses maximum aperture where it can: must have been designed to be used mainly wide open! Re: Next move from Pentax: anyone in the know (even under NDA) ?
For a second rate company, they do pretty well. Try shooting with a mid range or higher Canon somtime. Have a look at the D40. In 1972, Pentax was still more or less a big player in the marketplace, though they were already at least a generation out of step. People want decent lenses to be sure, and they can get that from any camera maker, but more than that, they want technological sophistication. That's true to a certain extent, but there are also many people who actually think it's more important that a product is easy to use and can do the job they want in an efficient manner, than that it's advanced, modern or high-tech, and who value usability more than features, or should I say feature creep? Those are the ones Pentax seem to be targeting, and I rather like them for it. It sort of makes me wish that Pentax were producing mobile phone, because then I might be able to buy one that's, well, a phone - and not an MP3 player, GPS, radio, Filofax, games console, toaster... Or a camera for that matter ;-) Right now, that means fast AF, and high frame rates. It's been about that for some 20 years, and Pentax has been way behind the curve for all of it. Re: PESO: Glorious Gourd
The merits of this photo are of little consequence or interest, but the notion that good street photography has to show a connection is, to my mind, silliness. Most of HCB's pics are of unaware subjects. And if the subject doesn't see the photographer, the focal length of the lens matters little. To me, it's more important to be able to achieve some selective focus -- blur the background -- than to be in the proximity of the subject. I think the big advantage of wider lenses has nothing to do with intimacy. It's a matter of not having to focus, or at least not having to focus accurately. Most often, when the subject sees the photographer, you get either stock pose or an angry response. Actually it's just ingrained muscle memory, years of having to use vi while maintaining services on Unix machines means that the basic editing commands are pretty much automatic. vi is ideal for that use, it's lightweight and everything has it. Most of my shots were taken on Velvia, so it may be quite some time before I'm able to show any of them here. However, I did shoot one roll of regular color film, and this picture is my favorite from that roll. http://picasaweb.google.com/rg2pdml/PESO/photo?authkey=W1C-i05p28o#5120829586467132594 That was 400 speed film and a 15-30mm lens. I straightened this picture out a bit; it seems the bridge I was standing on wasn't quite level or else I had my tripod improperly set up. Interestingly, as a side note, this film is actually some generic film I grabbed at a sale at Walgreens going for 99 cents a roll. I shot it mostly out of curiousity, but I can't say the results were horrible. Thanks everyone for looking! And come with me next time, I'll probably be going again next Sunday :) It's a lovely shot. My only problem with it is that the sky's a bit washed out. RE: Next move from Pentax: anyone in the know (even under NDA) ?
Who knows? Pentax is effectively a bigger company now, or at least as long as Hoya is willing to put some money into the Imaging division. Hoya may smell some profit in Pentax lenses, especially since they can supply the blanks at cost. In the old film days, you could lag behind in technology as long as the basic features were done well, i.e., good optics, shutters, etc. A fancy new segmented meter was nice but you could get away without it. Film was the common piece of technology and everyone had to use it. Leica was an even more extreme example of this approach than Pentax. It's harder now. What is a basic DSLR? Digital is so much more tied to technology because of the sensors. And, of course, there's AF which is a much more difficult and variable feature than AE and one in which Pentax really fell behind. The big issue here is again the lenses, as the new DA* lenses will bring AF speed much closer to the market leaders. Here again, Hoya can make some money. Canon (and Nikon, but especially Canon) will always be ahead of Pentax in feature-rich body design since they have so much more RD money. The real question is convergence. At what point will all DSLR bodies be good enough to make extra features irrelevant to all but the very top end? I suspect that AF will evolve the longest, rather than sensor design. John Celio wrote: How do you decide what to cut and what to keep when you've shot more than one good photo of a subject? Well, start by admitting that objectivity in art doesn't exist and, perhaps, changing the word good to what you are personally happy with. Assuming you feel like all or most of the photos of said subject are good, how do you distance yourself from your personal attachment to your work or subject, in order to objectively edit it all down to something more manageable than (for instance) the big ol' gallery I posted over the weekend? I didn't see anything on line anywhere this past weekend (by anyone) - so can't comment on that (cause I was in a big old Scrabble tourney and had a big old house guest - I deleted without reading just about everything in my inbox so I have to skip commenting on that :) ) Objectivity is the goal, I think. How do you achieve it? John I don't think objectivity is a goal or a possibility for an artist... any artist... but getting distance from whatever you have created helps. Time is a huge factor in this Showing two photos to others/or one person ** whose work and eye you respect and admire ** and asking which they prefer and why might lead you in the right direction. You need to please yourself first, though, unless you are doing all this stuff solely for monetary gain - then your goal is to simply please your client :) Hopefully, you can support yourself by doing both . I recently (last week) asked for the opinion from the list of my fiddling in photoshop with some photos some of which I liked and didn't myself and couldn't make up my mind... the responses were all over the map, though there was a leading toward A instead of B . Re: Cut or Keep? A Question About Editing
Well, once I got rid of the technically bad stuff, it was easy. I let the customer decide. Commercial as opposed to art photography is easy that way. I have never been an art photographer, so it was normally up to someone else to make that kind of decision. The only time it happened that I had to do it was for an exhibition or my portfolio. Both of those were rather easy because the photos had been taken long enough in the past that the excitement of making them no longer affected my decision. So I guess the answer to this question is wait a while. BTW, if anyone is interested, back in the old days the rule of thumb was that if you cut more than 10% of your shots for technical reasons you needed to learn photography. In later years I found that 90% of the bad stuff was lab related rather than photographer related. Now 90% of the technically bad photos are that way because I am too lazy to fight my automatic digital camera (the one I have has a lousy manual interface, plus it loses any custom setting every time I change the batteries). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Oh I don't know. :-) My statement was a little different. I'm saying that they have gained a little respect with the K10D and now is the prime time to capitalize on it with a camera body that looks like they're trying to compete with the very high-mid/high range offerings from Canon and Nikon. At what point will all DSLR bodies be good enough to make extra features irrelevant to all but the very top end? I suspect that AF will evolve the longest, rather than sensor design. Personally, I feel that point has happened already. It depends a lot on what you're after, what you need or want. I look for core competencies: imaging quality, noise, lens qualities. I don't really care much about high speed sequence capture, AF, etc. For me, most of the DSLRs available since the introduction of the Canon 10D work well enough that my principle discriminators are lens line and control ergonomics, adaptability. Yet another thread on what is street photography. So, not that anyone cares, but here's my take: I remember Shel (not to pick on Shel, who I love to death, irascible tho' he could be) once chiding me, asking how many frames did you take of that subject?, then telling me that I should chat and otherwise interact with my street subjects, get to know them a bit, make them feel comfortable with me while I shoot. You know what? That worked for Shel. It's worked for many photographers. Sometimes it works for me. Other times I prefer to be a stealthy fly on the wall. There's no right or wrong for street photography. HCB wanted to be invisible to his subjects. He rarely shot more than two frames of one event (that according to his long-time developer) before moving on. That's in direct opposition to someone like Gary Winogrand, who shot rolls and rolls of the same subject. There are no rules. In fact, I think there's no such thing as street photography. One simply takes photographs. Either they work or they don't. Often they work for some (like this one of Paul's that works for me) but not for others. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
