Re: PESO: Old Four Eyes

2008-01-09 Thread Alastair Robertson
Thanks for the comments and sorry to the arachnophobes - I will put a
warning on the next spider pic I show.
The background is a little distracting and since it didn't often pause
on top of the stones which would have allowed blurred background, I
had to live with this. Forgot to say that this is a very small spider
- 3-4mm body width. DOF is an issue here F22 is sometimes not enough
though of course going to F27 would worsen the background distraction.

I have several other shots taken the same afternoon here
http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/te_horo_salticid. Arachnophobes
aside, is there a favourite amongst these or did I get the pick right
the first time (http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/91472265)?

In answer to Igor - yes the -1.5 EV for the flash is to keep a more
natural look and avoid overblown highlights etc. As to the to the
+2EV on the body - I do find that the camera and flash combo tends to
underexpose - quite badly sometimes, and I need to pump this up to
avoid having to do it PP which tends to cause bad artifacts including
the notorious banding issues in dark subjects. Even so I still had to
add another 1.33 EV in lightroom! In fact, this is the biggest
complaint I have with the system - chronic underexposure with the
flash and K10D.

Yes it does.

I think this came in the 1.10 update? in any case my 1.30 version supports
it.

Though, curiously, I don't think it'll do wireless HSS (which the *istD

K10D flash question

Does the K10D have the wireless flash capability with the onboard
flash that the *istD has? I seem to remember people saying when it
first came out that it was missing and you needed to mount an AF360 or

bring it back. Did that ever happen?

Hi Igor,

Sorry, your original query sounded kinda specific to your printer so I
didn't reply. I use an older Epson Stylus Photo 820.

> 1. For all printer users: what canvas/canvas paper do you use
> (roll or sheet)?

I've only printed on canvas once, about four or five sheets. It was
some no-name brand, maybe even the store brand for whatever store I
bought it in.

> 2. What parameters do they differ by (except for the size)?
> I.e. what should I look for when comparing different brand products, and

After looking closely at the surface of the paper under a loupe, I
picked the same settings as for "really highly glossy" premium photo
paper. I forget the exact name of the setting, but it was one step
"below" transparency film.

The reason I picked that was that the surface looked like it wasn't
going to absorb much ink. And, luckily, I was right and it didn't and I
got some really nice prints out of it.

> 3. for Epson R2400 printer users:
> a) Is it capable of printing well on canvas?
> b) Same question about metallic paper (such as Kodak Endura Metallic)?

a) The 820 did OK but I haven't used any of the newer Epson ink sets.

b) Metallic probably acts very similarly to transparency film. It's not
going to absorb anything at all, basically. So you'll need to use the
transparency film setting, probably. Hopefully the surface tension and
surface action between the metallic surface and the ink isn't
pathologically different than that with transparency film. Oh, and
pigment inks are probably going to work a lot better than dye inks.

Yes, but the others aren't really 230k pixels, but rather 1/3 of that.
All LCD displays on cameras are specified by points or sub-pixels. The
922k display on the D3/D300/A700 has its pixels counted the same way
as the 230k displays on other bodies.

The 922x displays are 640x480, the 230k displays are 320x240. twice
the pixels in each direction.

A few years ago I used a roll of Epson canvas on one of their high end
printer & got marvelous reults.

I believe the Epson R2400 can use Epson Preminum Art Water Resistant Canvas
(comes in 13" X 20' rolls)

Re: Samsung GX-20 first glimpse.. Is this the new K20D ?

2008-01-09 Thread Adam Maas
Yes, but the others aren't really 230k pixels, but rather 1/3 of that.
All LCD displays on cameras are specified by points or sub-pixels. The
922k display on the D3/D300/A700 has its pixels counted the same way
as the 230k displays on other bodies.

The 922x displays are 640x480, the 230k displays are 320x240. twice
the pixels in each direction.

so, I apologize for reposting this - I'd give it one more try.

1. For all printer users: what canvas/canvas paper do you use
(roll or sheet)?
2. What parameters do they differ by (except for the size)?
I.e. what should I look for when comparing different brand products, and
what is the [practical] difference between canvas and "canvas paper"?

3. for Epson R2400 printer users:
a) Is it capable of printing well on canvas?
b) Same question about metallic paper (such as Kodak Endura Metallic)?

Thank you,

Igor

Socialism has nothing to do with it. Capitalism in it's purest form has
the belief that each party should benefit from a transaction.
Mercantilism believes you can, nay _must_ rape your customers and
employees, and get away with it. It's right there in the handbook...

Re: Manual for D-BG1 grip for *ist D?

2008-01-09 Thread Bruce Dayton
well, there is one thing to be aware of - if the dials are in between
click detents, then the main dials can have problems. Basically make
sure the the dials on both the body and grip click into place as you
use them. Sometimes it seems like one of the dials is unresponsive -
it is normally because the opposite one (grip or body) is not clicked
into a detent.

PDML rule of thumb (I should probably call it "Rule of quick thumb"):
If you have important news to post "FYI", if you wait long enough,
somebody else would post it to PDML.

Corollary:
If you post some news that is more than 1 hour old, it probably has been
posted to PDML already.
If you don't see it there, you must have overlooked it.
:-)

Corollary 2 (my personal):
I prefer reading PDML as opposed to writing to it.
I try to suppress my urge of posting when I can.
:-)

Re: Samsung GX-20 first glimpse.. Is this the new K20D ?

2008-01-09 Thread Tim Øsleby
The Nikon LCD is not really 922k.
It is about 300k x 3. 300k pix pr colour channel.
In other words, it is better, but not as much better as the specs suggests.

Hmm, if that's the same 2.7" LCD as the Sony A200, I'm disappointed.
The A200's 2.7" LCD is only 230k pixels and those low-res displays
make live view far less useful than the high-res displays on the D3 or
D300 (Which are sharp enough to determine critical focus on image
review or live view, the difference between the 922k pixel and 230k
pixel LCD's is VERY noticable). Nice to see the return of ISO3200,
although I suspect we're still going to be a stop under what the
competition is delivering (other than Canon). The D300 and A700 offer
ISO 6400, and I suspect the rumoured A500 and D90 will as well.

Unless there's more to it than this I'm seeing a competent but
underwhelming update to the K10D. Not really interesting to me as an
upgrade to the K10D.

Re: PESO: Old Four Eyes

2008-01-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Nice shot. I'm not a particular enthusiast of wildlife photos,
although I like to see them and do some occasionally ... more often
birds and water life, rarely insects.
--
Responding to Igor:

With my DS, I found the meter calibration generally required +0.5-0.7
EV compensation when capturing RAW format for accurate density with
an 18% grayscale reference card. I find my K10D to be more accurately
calibrated, requiring at most +0.3 EV but within range to use 0.0EV
and get the appropriate number.

Looking at this scene, I would have wanted to add an additional
+0.7-1.0 EV for ambient exposure as the scene's average reflectivity
is significantly higher than an 18% gray.

+2 EV ambient exposure comp seems a little high, especially when
coupled with the -1.5 EV flash fill. But the photo looks fine,
without highlight saturation and includes a full tonal scale. I'd
chalk the settings values up to individual camera body and flash unit
variations in calibration. I've not used the AF540FGZ flash unit so I
don't know much first-hand about how the ambient metering system and
it work together.

I wanted to figure out the watt-hour rating of a Pentax K10D's battery.

The B&H site (fastest place to look) lists it as a 1620 milliAmp-hour
battery, that's 1.62 Amp-hour, with a nominal voltage of 7.4v.

W=V*A, making it about a 12 watt-hour battery if I read the
definition of amp-hour and watt-hour correctly.

Did I get that right?

Re: PESO: Old Four Eyes

I like this very nice shot, Alastair!

I have a question (for you and whoever else would want to comment on it).
I understand that -1.5EV flash compensation is for a soft fill-in flash.
But what was the reason for +2EV ?

Recently there was a brief discussion here (I remember Godfrey
participating in it) that some cameras tend to underexpose.
Is that +2EV to compensate for the inherent underexposure?

Re: Samsung GX-20 first glimpse.. Is this the new K20D ?

2008-01-09 Thread Adam Maas

You cannot have spare lithium batteries in your checked-in baggage,
