Re: Gallery Rejects
I've sometimes wondered why they don't prune the gallery once in a while. In particular, I think the Premier Collection would benefit from a time-limited election. I know Pentax Norway refer people to the Gallery when they get questions like whether a particular lens is good for whatever. From their POV, good shots made with new lenses should appear without any particular regard to the uniqueness of the shot as such. Peer review effectively prohibits that... Perhaps some fast-track solution for shots made with novelty lenses would balance that one, but it still doesn't solve the general crowding. Jostein 2008/6/22 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: The gallery i's not a teaching tool, so it shouldn't be expected to educate. And part of the problem with an overwhelming majority of rejects lies in the fact that the gallery is quite full. I'm sure they dont' want to add work endlessly. So, at this point, uniqueness counts more than it might under normal circumstances. -- Original message -- From: Jack Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't think many have any idea of what is good and, therefore, have no basis for editing. Posting to the Gallery will not teach them anything as they have no clue as to why they are being rejected. Filly Loo
On Friday I went to Ashmore, a village in Dorset, to photograph their midsummer festival, which is called Filly Loo. The festival takes place around the village pond, a dew pond which supposedly goes back to before Roman times. The festival itself seems to go back a very long time too, and is a very enjoyable occasion, almost like being in Thomas Hardy's day: http://www.web-options.com/FL2008/ After this I went over to Stonehenge for the solstice, and will post a gallery later. These 2 events were my first serious attempt to use 2nd-curtain slow-synch flash, so I made a lot of technical errors, but it's a useful technique on a wet midsummer's eve, and I'm starting to get the hang of it. Most who know us both know I'm a devoted fan of your photography - there are a number of them that are burned into my memory because they are such strong representaions of what photos are about to me - not just sharp - good color nice bokeh , etc., but the interaction of all these things with a more ephemeral quality - emotion, perception, your view of the world around you... Extended store warranty on Pentax glass worth-while?
I'm interested in comments on what PDMLers think about extending the Pentax factory warranty (2 years in Canada) with an extended warranty. My impression is that Pentax lenses, especially such as the Limited ones, are very rugged and reliable and so an extended warranty is a waste of money. Background: I purchased a new SMC DA 2.8 35mm Macro Limited on Saturday. This was my first purchase from a particular large Canadian photo chain (Henry's). I was taken aback by how aggressively the sales guy was pushing Henry's extended warranties on stuff, even on the UV filter! The lens was $449 Ca, and they want $79 for a warranty that will push total coverage out to 5 years. I'm always leery of 3rd-party extended warranties on products that are generally solidly built and expected to last for a very long time, so I declined it. My take is that stores like this don't feel they're making enough on the bare products so they want to load the purchase with useless add-ons. (I know that many feel that UV filters themselves are useless add-ons.) So, would you have taken the warranty on this lens? Am I leaving myself open to an expensive repair bill 3 years from now, or did I shrewdly avoid a store tax? If a lens works flawlessly for the first couple of years of it's life, the odds are pretty much 100% that anything that derails it after that will be something that voids the warranty anyway (impact, for example), so you are going to have an expensive repair bill, warranty or no warranty. If you really want insurance, bump up your homeowners package instead, and make sure that your camera equipment is covered for all losses. Extended warranties are, for the most part, a waste of money. When I sold camera for Astral Photo, they pushed us really hard to sell extended warranties, IIRC, one Christmas season the spiff on a warranty was close to 30%, and we were told that it was a pure profitmaker, as the claims % was really small. Re: Extended store warranty on Pentax glass worth-while?
Few of these store or extended warranty policies are worth anything other than as profit to the company and to the store. Lenses rarely break unless you damage them, and damage of that sort is never covered. If you want extended warranty protection, check your credit cards and see if any offer it as a service. I always buy with a card that at least doubles the manufacturers' warranty. Some cards also offer loss or damage reimbursement for a period of time ... American Express reimbursed the $900+ it cost to fix a camera that was flung from my hands when a small child ran into me while I was taking a photo from a stone bridge while in Italy. I'd only just purchased the camera two weeks before, while in the UK. Paul mentioned AppleCare (Apple Protection Plan). In the course of my time at Apple Computer, I worked extensively with the group defining that program to make it as good a value to the customers as possible. It's still a huge profit center for Apple ... but I feel good enough about my work there to the extent that I buy it for my systems and recommend it for my clients when they are looking to buy new Apple systems. It has paid off and proved a major savings for both myself and for several clients over the years. A necessary evil? well, I question the necessary part, but it has certainly done good for me. I am such a terrible businessperson
Argh. The owner of the vacant house two doors down has been renovating it so he can sell it. Two days ago he caught me leaning out the window with the 400mm lens, and shouted up to ask a favour of me. He wanted me to shoot the house for a web site. My automatic answer was, Yeah, I could do that. Half an hour later it finally occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, I should have made a suggestion involving money. Today was the shoot (I had to use the point-and-shoot for a few rooms because I don't have a wide enough lens for the Pentax -- getting those shots to not look jarringly different will be interesting). At the end, he brought up the money. I felt like I'd already screwed up by not raising the money issue at the beginning, and really am not sure how much I should've been asking in the first place, so I told him to figure out how much he thought the photos were worth to him when I give them to him, and pay me that plus advertise me to folks I can charge a more professional rate. Someday -- sooome dy -- I may learn to let the business part of my brain speak before the artist part. In the meantime, any of y'all have any pointers for me as to what someone might expecte to pay for a photographer to come in and document a house for a sales brochure and a web site? Should I just think in terms of reasonable hourly rate and keep track of how long the editing takes me? It's a rather pretty house, by the way. Where mine is a prime candidate for restoration (if I ever win the lottery), his is a good argument for renovation. Removing all the interior walls on the ground floor really brightens up the kitchen and dining room a lot (as well as, of course, making them feel more spacious), and the funky geometry of these houses still suggests a sort of demarkation between kitching/dining room and living room even without the walls. On the second floor, sacrificing part of one abnormally large bedroom to make space for a really fancy bathroom works out; the amount of bedroom left would look like an ordinary-size bedroom if I didn't know how large the same room is in my house. -- Glenn -- Glenn -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Ads for Pentax
There's been lots of discussion on this list and others regarding purchasing equipment from local BM stores vs on-line; small, independent retailers vs large retailers. Several weeks ago, I was wandering through a Ritz Camera store perusing the bag section when the Pentax display case caught my eye. The K200D the K20D were already on the market, but the store only had a K110D and a broken K100D Super on display (LCD didn't function, shutter did not work). The staff member told me that they did have a K10D at one point but after it was sold corporate didn't send them a replacement. When I inquired about the current line (K200D K20D), the member supposed that the management was waiting for the summer to be over and sell out all of the existing stock of K1x0 stock. However, I was told that I could order the K200D or K20D on-line with Ritz. If I wanted to buy on-line, I told him that there were probably several places that had it cheaper than Ritz and that the BM store was losing customers. He didn't disagree. There was another customer who came in for a Canon lens, but the store didn't have that in stock either. It was apparently a special order item. In the Ritz insert to Sunday's paper, I see they are advertising the Pentax K110D Super Digital SLR as a Blow Out Sale. Was there ever such a K110D Super? What would be the point in losing the business of walk-in customers by selling them out of date merchandise? Of course, there is always the option of taking your purchase on-line, but is that what this has come to? Stonehenge
Here are my shots from Stonehenge over the solstice: http://www.web-options.com/SH2008/ As I said when I posted the Filly Loo shots, I made a number of technical mistakes, but thanks to Dr. Lightroom's Rescue Remedy I have managed to recover some of them. In any case, I now know a lot more about 2nd-curtain slow-sync flash than I did a couple of days ago. I'll go again next year, and hope to get it right. Comments welcome, of course. It was an extremely tiring time. I drove to Ashmore from London, arriving at about 6pm. Things started to kick off at 7pm and went on until about 10.30. From there I drove to Stonehenge, arriving at about 11.30pm. I left at about 6am, having been on my feet carrying a heavy camera bag with food and drink the whole time. It took a few hours to get back to London, which I really shouldn't have driven - I nearly nodded off at the wheel several times. When I got home I felt the urge for a fry-up so I went out to a café, ordered the full monty, and fell asleep at the table before I finished it! Anyway, it's interesting to compare this year's Stonehenge with the celebrations in gentler times, as shown on the Magnum site: http://tinyurl.com/2cn64b http://www.magnumphotos.com/Archive/C.aspx?VP=XSpecific_MAG.Search01_V Page Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I walked past an outlet of one of our biggest retail photography chains this afternoon, in a shopping centre that is one of the biggest on the country. In contrast to the huge boards spelling out the rebates on Canon and Nikon gear, the Pentax stuff had store-printed A4 sheets quoting the full retail price. As far as anything other than the big two is concerned (and, even then, just the mainstream stuff) it makes no sense whatsoever to buy equipment fron the High Street in the UK. Excellent, of course. I particularly like the one with the guy yawning - it reminded me of Paul Strand's photo of Wall Street, but having just looked again at Strand's photo I see they are quite different. Nevertheless, I think there is a line of descent there. There's also a famous photo taken in Chicago that this reminds me of, but I can't for the moment remember the photographer's name. How do other people on the workshops you take react to your photos? In particular, how do the leaders of the workshops react? Re: Extended store warranty on Pentax glass worth-while?
Extended warranties are just another way for the retailer to make money. So, would you have taken the warranty on this lens? No. Am I leaving myself open to an expensive repair bill 3 years from now... Only if you don't take care of the lens like the fine piece it is. Now if you're a klutz, that's something else An issue caused by Pentax will most likely surface in the first few weeks of usage should be covered by Pentax's initial warranty. Now go out use that sucker ! Kenneth Waller http://www.tinyurl.com/272u2f - Original Message - From: Bruce Walker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Extended store warranty on Pentax glass worth-while? Re: OT - eBay knocked down a peg
- Original Message - From: Daniel J. Matyola Subject: Re: OT - eBay knocked down a peg Governmental Regulation = Free Market? Interesting way to look at it. Think Microsoft, and how healty the computer marketplace would be if your government hadn't stepped in and shut down their free market policies. A Free market should not give companies the right to be so heavy handed that they eventually are the market. Even your government recognizes that, at least within your own country, though it isn't well practiced in international trade. Re: GIMP question
[EMAIL PROTECTED] opined: Please don't take offense, but the real question is why would any serious photographer subject their file to GIMP? Uh, because in addition to the other adjectives and nouns that describe me, 'broke' and 'poor' must be included. I'm trying to figure out how to pay my water bill and buy gasoline; the software budget has been empty for a very long time, alas. (Does Photoshop run under Linux? I'm short on processing power in my workstations, so I often run GIMP on a server downstairs and throw the interface to a machine upstairs using X. So I'm running it on more than one machine, sometimes under Windows, sometimes under Linux, and sometimes on a borrowed Mac when I'm visiting somebody else.) What's out there that's as serious as GIMP that's also free and cross-platform? (Really, I haven't been keeping up, so far all I know there might _be_ alternatives now.) -- Glenn -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: GIMP question
I'm fairly ignorant in regard to operating systems, so my comment may be misguided. PhotoShop Elements comes free with a lot of hardware, but it doesn't run on LInux. I don't happen to have a free install at the moment, but someone else on the list might. Of course it doesn't run under Linux. Sorry if my post offended. Hope everything works out well for you.
