I like most of those. I'm always amazed at the way PDMLers manage to
find attractive images with the most unlikely subjects - and annoyed
that I didn't think of them first...

:-)

1, 3 and 6 work best for me. 5 is a bit dark and indistinct for my
taste and the bluish/purple mottling in the lower background of 4 is a
little distracting.

Number 2 is a bit too abstract.

Re: FIlm transport in hand luggage

2009-01-13 Thread Luiz Felipe
The worst moment I had experienced so far I just forgot about a tiny
flashlight in my pocket. Was very late, and between the photo bag, my
name being called by the PA system and the damned metal detector beeping
I almost lost my temper. Did swear out loud in a foreign language when
the hand detector pinpointed the not so empty pocket and the dangerous
mini-torch. And the security did dismantle the flashlight just to make
sure the batteries were permitted items.

Some days we just do better staying in the bed. To get to the airport I
had a row with some rent a car crew about the difference between the
voucher and the final settlement of the bill (had to pay cash as they
said my creditcard refused - wich it did because they already had
charged the balance twice). To get to the airline counter I had to wait
for the idiot in front of me in the line, who would carry 6 bags in his
hand but couldn't lift one, then to board the airplane I had to come
back and describe in full detail the contents of my checked bag, which
displayed in the airport x-ray machine something that looked like 3 gun
barrels (my tripod), some knifes (one folding pocket, one small diving)
and a strange amount of books (9, sci-fi). Then I just forgot to take
out the dangerous flashlight...

And then had to show BR customs proof I had all that strange looking
cameras and lenses before I left the country - wich I did, serial number
after serial number after serial number. The gal was so disappointed she
was not getting me for smuggling a full bag of photo gear she did the
checklist twice. Then found the books, and tried hard to find where it
said I couldn't carry 9 books from the exterior without paying some tax,
or that sci-fi books in english were subversive and outlawed. I wonder
if I had a Playboy magazine...

Other day I asked for hand inspection of my films, heard they say yes
and handed them the ziplock. Wich they promptly received and dumped
trough the x-ray with impassive faces. I only received the films back to
test them - would leave as a present but tought better. No, I didn't
lose my temper, but my face wouldn't qualify as impassive.

I never travel with exposed, not developed film - carry my unexposed out
of the paper packs in a plastic bag (and often use Fuji, almost always
in clear plastic containers) but sometimes we just can't get it done
without some talking, and lately even talking seems ineffective. Thanks
for your views, folks - I'll carry TSA and Kodak printouts with me. And
maybe I go digital in 2009...

2009-01-13 Thread Peter Alling
All are very interesting, all are at least a little flawed. That said, I'm
very impressed. While the DOF isn't really sufficient on butterfly, and as
someone else remarked that the wing on the hummingbird is almost covering it's
eye I'd go with those two, the compositions easily overcome the nits. Meerkat
is the most conventional image and that really allows it's flaws to show.
Branch is also pretty conventional, though the best executed, almost perfect
use of DOF, and beautifully lit. Grapes needs to be sharper(?) and there seems
to be something wrong with the tone gradations, it looks almost posterized, but
I have to assume you didn't intend that.

Frankly, I found a shot on your smugmug page that I like a lot better
than any of these - and it's unusual cause I'm not

a big fan of cute little kid shots :-) - it is this one:

http://www.neovenator.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=847

sweet expression and good all around technically/geometrically.

If I have to pick from these :

Meercat by a mile for me - He has heart..
BUT I'd crop about h well if this were a 6 inch tall shot, about 1
inch off the top.. too much space above

his head distracts.
.
2nd Humming bird - but black and white would be fine for this, since
you mention struggling with the sepia..
the humming bird has the most interesting geometry but there are
little specs of stuff around that I'd want to get rid of.

(note bottom left bar)

The grapes bother me because they look like well, green maggots...
looks like they are in a glass.. but it is
a well done photo technically... do you have more space around the
glass? so that you see it is a glass holding grapes?

The closeup of the branch is in last place for me -- The butterfly is
next to last -- I can't quite explain why.. a bit too fussy .

Yeah - it is really hard to chose from recently done stuff...
Hope this helps and sorry it is late... I'm just coming back into life
after long cold virus

2009-01-13 Thread John Celio
Thanks for the feedback so far everyone! You're all immensely helpful.

Grapes needs to be sharper(?) and there seems to be something wrong
with the tone gradations, it looks almost posterized, but I have to
 assume you didn't intend that.

The grapes are really sharp when viewed larger. Also, these photos are
compressed (using PS's Save For Web function) enough to make them load
quickly for web viewers, so that may be part of the problem. The
gradations you see could be because the grapes were underwater (in a
centerpiece, to be precise). Grape skins seem to do that when they're
submerged. Maybe there's some sort of waxy coating on them? I don't
know.

Finally did you know I hate you?

I'm honored!

I'm not real happy that I was shoveling snow yesterday in -20C weather, and

At least out there, you can see them coming at you./

Re: PESO - attempt at B/W conversion

2009-01-13 Thread AlunFoto
Thanks everyone for the input! Much appreciated.
I will look at this again when back in Oslo with access to a proper
screen and PS CS3.

On this laptop screen the midtones doesn't really look very muddy, but
I suspect the gamut is rather narrow.

Mark guessed right about the intent of the shot. I wanted this to be a
real low-key shot because there was a truly leaden sky in the last
half-hour of usable light yesterday afternoon. A respectable winter
storm was just about to hit land.
He also observed that I had whitened the surf, and that I had overdone
it. I suspect I will agree when I see it on a different screen. :-)

Ann: there wasn't much colour around in the first place. I liked the
bw better than the blueish tint in the colour version.

Thanks again

If I looked at everything and had some sort of elimination contest and

What it comes down to is: You just have to pick two, so just do it.

I use it quite a bit. I had a great deal more fun with it on film
bodies, not so much because it was wider, but because it was more of a
fisheye. The distortion was fun when it was more obvious, but on the
*istD the distortion is kind of betwixt and between; I find it to
be bothersome at times.

Still it's a fun lens, and I use it lots.

Five finalists:
http://www.neovenator.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1062

Took forever to narrow it down this much. Hardest bit of editing I've had
to do all year. The hummingbird one is supposed to look sepia toned, but
the Photoshop sepia filter doesn't help for shit, and this is the closest
I could get. Probably too yellow.

If you have an opinion on which one or two are best, I'd be immensely
grateful. I'm a terrible editor, especially with recent photos taken
recently.

Thanks,
John
