I think you've missed the composition a bit there - it doesn't really cohere
properly. Rather than cloning the thing out you might consider a different
crop. I would start with a double square and place the horizon line right
along the middle of the frame, then kind of muck around a bit until it felt
right or I got bored.

>Great vid - I can understand why you're so excited about this.

Thanks Bob. Believe it or not, I was using a borrowed entry level camera
that seriously restricted creative freedom. I can do a lot better than that.

The subject of photographers intrigues me. To follow them around and see
what makes them tick, to get inside their heads, to try and convey their
thought processes and aspirations is something that I would like to try
and grapple with in a documentary, or series of docs. I think it would
make interesting viewing.

I know it's al been done before, but this new aspect of a worldwide
community gathering in forums such as email lists and chat rooms where
pics can be shown around like prints at the camera club adds a new
dimension - and producing a book from remote points of the globe without
actually getting the bottom off the seat - again, pretty fascinating. I
think it would appeal to a wider viewing public, certainly with
international appeal.

That's the basic gist of what I have in mind. I'm working on it but
these things taking ridiculous amounts of time. If I had a spare 30
grand in the bank I'd take 6 months off and get going on it now...

I had my *istD at George Ray's Dragstrip when it went wierd, and what had
happened was the button battery cover had come off. I thought the camera was
dead for sure. Ended shooting that day, but when I got a replacement from
Pentax US (free, by the way,) the camera is still going. My wife even took
it to China last summer.

Re: graphic converter question

Well here's a screenshot:

I think I've got it all figured out except for these two items ...

What's the difference between QuickTime JPG and JPEG6.0?

And why in the world would there be an option to /not/ embed the sRGB profile?

Thanks again for your help.

Again, the only thing I need this program for is to write captions
into the image file for sending out to agencies and papers etc.
Graphic Converter is the least expensive program I've found yet that's
capable of doing this.

Oh sure...
"Photographer killed at Grandfather Mountain"
A participant at this year's Nature Photography Weekend was killed in
a game gone bad. A group of Pentax photographers camping overnight in
the picnic area played lawn darts well into the night. In the wee
hours of Saturday night, an adjacent camper was pinned to the ground
by a lawn dart. He was a Nikon user.

I'm more likely to pull my film and prefer the look of "traditional"
film to T-grain film or whatever it's called.

While I prefer older style emulsions, I won't complain about TMax. It
most definitely does handle tonal differentiation quite nicely. I
just hate what it does to my fixer. :)

Tim, are you starting photo classes on april 1st??? Whyinhell that kind
of opportunity don't come my way

Serious, I really wish you a very, very sucessful first day - and still
more sucessful others following said first day.

...how much would the lessons cost to a brasilian student???

Tim, I'd try to point photos could be built - an idea I got from Michael
Busselle books and some Life book on photo from the 70's. And the
importance of paying attention to photo ops - and how easier to get the
decisive moment if you happen to have the camera pointed the right way,
just a little earlier.

There are lots of good sources, and I'm positive the other messages will
present unusual sources as well... I'll be taking notes myself.

Congrats!

good luck! I'm doing the same next monday. i was asked by a group of
students from a local 'tech-students club' (which i mentioned these
days, it was celebrating a 55th anniversary). i have no idea of their
level and tought of starting with presenting some good images in
different mediums (print, lousy print, slide, digital projection) and
than showing them some bad pictures just to confuse/amuse/amaze?? them
a little for a start. then i'm thinking to start as high or low as the
group seems to be.

It seems to me that Marnie may be confusing media with product - or at
least she's confusing ~me~. Photography, paint, charcoal and stencils
are merely media that may or may not produce art. Taking photography
and doing something with it that makes it look like another media
doesn't make the original photograph any less "art". Nor does
effecting those changes necessarily make the new thing "more arty"
than the original. Different, yes. More "arty"? Not necessarily.

OTOH, since the faux change in media is certainly part of Marnie's
expression, the change is art, so perhaps her term "to artify" is
okay. I guess what bothers me is the implication that the original
product is not art, or that it's "less" art than the finished product.

Or maybe I'm just being too picky.

That's all.

cheers,
frank

Actually I was. It was Sunday morning and there wasn't much traffic.
As you can see there was nothing within eyeshot coming up Parliament
towards me in the lane I was standing in, so I was pretty safe. Wet

The orange in the Beer Store sign is certainly distinctive. I still
have trouble calling it the Beer Store, though. Once in a while I
still call it the Brewers' Retail (Dave Brooks will remember that
one). Or sometimes the In and Out store.

Showing my age, I guess...

No idea really. You have more explicit controls available when you use

There are people in the world who strip all profiles and metadata ...

I owned and used GraphicConverter for a while, but mostly for its

doesn't make the original photograph any less "art". Nor does
effecting those changes necessarily make the new thing "more arty"
than the original.

That's all.

Don't think I had that implication, that photography is less than.

But you caught the jist -- a change in apparent medium as to "how it looks."
For me, my photography is less than, so maybe you picked up on that. I am a
better artist than a photographer, and since I started late in life, probably
always will be. And I am okay with that, and I am not sure that I have the
dedication to become a really GOOD photographer. It's just a hobby for me and
something I do when I have time. Recently I've given thought to improving,
like revisiting and revisiting the Duck Club, until I experiment with DOF
more,
metering more, and get more of what I want. Really exhaust the area.

And, to be totally truthful, I like the mediums of art better than I like
the mediums of photography -- more paper/canvas styles, more rendering choices
(pencil/paint, etc.), more depth on surface, etc.

But that is sure a strange argument, coming from you, frank -- the
non-artist.

On the subject of Tonal Differentiation and pushing Tri-X beats both
TMax 400 and Delta 400 silly. My experience with the modern emulsions
are that they have extremely poor midtone seperation unless you are
using per-sheet development compensation to deal with known SBR's and
using N-1 or N-2 tiimes to stretch the midtones out. As to TMax 100,
try some Neopan Acros, all the strengths of TMax 100 without the
excessive sensitivity to slight changes in development, better
midtones and no reciprocity failure until 2 minutes.

As to pushing, both of the modern emulsions are good for a 2-3 stop
push max, while Tri-X can be pulled as far as 100 and pushed to 6400
fairly easily, and at least in 120 EI 12800 or 25600 are attainable
(But at the edge of sanity). Of course, my results are in TMax Dev and
Rodinal 1:100 stand developed not X-Tol.

Both Delta and TMax seem to be to be ideal films for anyone using the
full zone system, or who does heavy dev-time or darkroom/PS
manipulation.

I think I'd crop out the clump of grass. Maybe crop out 1/2 the water
at the bottom.

Mind you that's probably not what you'd like to do, otherwise you
wouldn't be asking about cloning, you'd be asking about a crop.

The crop works pretty well. Train on top left with reflection, wind farm
