For what it is, no it is not that much. And no, I'm not particularly interested in seeing quality comparisons. My el-cheapo 18-55 lens regularly knocks my socks off in terms of image quality. I'm sure the $1,200 lens will be just fine. Sure and I know that the 70-210A are great lenses. But they aren't brand-new, they aren't weather sealed and they aren't autofocus. I wonder if anyone would care to figure out how much the A70-210 went for brand-new and adjust that for inflation? I'd bet there wouldn't be that big a difference. RE: DA* 60-250 at BH
Like I said earlier, you can get smc-A/70-210mm/4 lenses in LIKE NEW stone mint condition for $139 fairly easily on ebay. Sure, weather sealing, greater zoom range, and AF definately add value to the DA lens but it would NOT add over a $1200 value to a $139 lens to ME if the image quality was only the same in the DA lens. To each his own. There is also the possiblility that the DA lens wont cover FF digital in the future as well as the A lens does. Thats a possible liability, not a plus for the DA lens. Bottom line is that I wouldnt pay the $1200 premium if the A70-210 was just as good optically for the DA60-250. The $1200 saved could buy to many other MUCH more valuable features to me like more good lenses and good DSLR bodies. I use zooms for event coverage. I shoot with two cameras. One gets the wide: the DA* 16-50, the other gets a longer lens. For that I've been using the DA* 50-135. But I've found that I can't always get close enough for the 135 FOV. So I'd like to have better reach on my second camera. The 60-250 fills the bill perfectly. I wouldn't even consider a manual focus lens for this role. It's bang, bang, shoot them dead work. Fast is good. And my eyes are old. What's more, I've found that the DA* lenses deliver better image quality on my Pentax digitals than lenses that were designed for full-frame cameras. A70-210/4 assessment
I saw the A70-210/4 vs DA* 60-250 thread I have an A70-210/4 that I bought off of eBay a couple of years ago for around $120. It's in practically new condition, came with the original Pentax hard case, etc. Physical Characteristics: It has a full metal body with a built-in slide-out hood. It is long and heavy and has the classic one-touch control that you push-pull to zoom and twist to focus. Optical Characteristics: I haven't done formal tests, but I have shot detailed stuff at distance. At 200mm, it is quite sharp (even wide open) on my K10D. It has a nice close-focus macro mode. It does show some purple fringing in strong backlight situations. Usability: I tip my hat to everyone who ever did action/sports photography with manual focus zooms back in the day. It is difficult. The one-touch focus/zoom doesn't help me much, either. Without a focus aid like a split-prism screen, I find it hard to nail focus down exactly on my K10D (and *ist-Ds). My bottom line: For deliberate photography such as landscape, scenic, macro, posed portraits, and such, I think it is a great lens. The results are good and it's a stop faster than anything else short of $1000+ lenses. It doesn't work for me for fast-response photography (sports, chasing my kids around, action weddings, wildlife, etc.). So, depending on the application, I think that the 10x cost premium of the DA* 60-250 may not be worth it, or may be totally necessary. --Mark -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: A70-210/4 assessment
If you are going to use MF lenses, why not install a better manual focus screen? (Do they interfere with AF operation? I dont know, possibly alter stop down metering wtih K/M lenses) I put a split image RF with microprism focus screen in my istDS when I first got it a few years ago and havent missed many if any focus shots since. The one I got works well on quality F4 to F5.6 lenses or faster. I find the better the quality of the lens the clearer the split image seperates. This is one of the reasons I PREFER manual focus most of the time. I KNOW where I want to focus and I KNOW Im going to get that in focus, and easily. No, I dont do sports or reportage/action where AF really pays off, but I have NO difficulty nailing focus manually on static / slow subjects using the DS split screen in average to bright light, Id estimate my batting average as .999 or better. Out of focus is a virtual non issue for me on my type of shots shooting w manual focus. That said, I dont do very low light work either. I have been lately using a tamron sp 80-200/2.8 in the focal range we have been discussing but that lens is so bright and contrasty I can practically manual focus it in the dark with the split image rf screen in the DS. Re: A70-210/4 assessment- If AF matters, how about the SMC FA80-200/2.8
It's also rather rare, lacks full-time focus override and weather sealing and probably AF's slower due to the large amount of glass and lack of SDM. It worked ok, but didn't seem all that durably built. Some other folks on this list had terrible troubles with theirs. I sold it for what I paid for it, so no net loss there. What keeps me from buying the 60-250 (besides the $$$) at this point is my lack of trust in the Pentax DA* lenses. RE: FA* and DA* lenses (was Re: A70-210/4 assessment- If AF matters, how about the SMC FA80-200/2.8)
While I dont doubt you have enjoyed and used your 31,43, and 77 mm lenses more, but those are not valid arguments against the FA80-200/2.8 or the 70-210 or 60-250mm lenses, those are primes not zooms and with the exception of the 77mm lens are not even close to being same focal range as the 60-250 lens being considered. FWIW, there have been two recent clean used fa80-200/2.8 sales on ebay in the $1400-1600 range, not that far off the $1350 price(new) of the 60-250/4 and the focal range is somewhat similar. My tamron sp 80-200/2.8 is 1400g and not really that bad weight wise. the pentax FA 80-200/2.8 is 1500g which to me would not be that bad either for a lens of that speed and range. If size and weight is a primary concern, the A70-210/4 is only 2/3 the weight of the DA60-250 around 680g for the A70-210/4 vs ~1000g for the DA/60-250/4. For anyone on tight budget, the tamron sp 80-200/2.8 is a great value. I got mine for under $300 a few years ago. I think they are still fairly inexpensive. the performance is really outstanding and you can get a A version of the adaptall2 mount too. Re: FA* and DA* lenses (was Re: A70-210/4 assessment- If AF matters, how about the SMC FA80-200/2.8)
I had to send my first DA* 16-50 back, but the replacement has been so good, it made me forget. I've shot over 10,000 frames with it for virtual tours, and every frame has been right on. My 50-135 has been great from the start. I hadn't heard of any focus problems. But the DP folks whine about everything so I wouldn't put much stock in it. I would guess that the long delay on the 60-250 had something to do with resolving quality control problems that arose with the DA*16-50. I'm not concerned about the quality, only the price. I know that if I buy from BH, and it's defective, they'll replace it. I looked at the Sigma 70-200/2.8. It's gotten some good reviews, and it's available for about $600. But it's not as long, and Sigma quality has always been a bit suspect. I'm leaning toward the 60-250. I sold it for $2000 on eBay in 2006 and bought my 31, 43, and 77 limited lenses with the $$$. I use them far more than I ever used my FA* 80-200 F2.8. I also had an FA* 28-70 F2.8 lens. I have no interest whatsoever in dropping more than $1000 for something that may or may not have a fatal design/manufacturing flaw. I have a 16-50. It went back to Pentax USA twice because of quality control problems. The second time they replaced it with a different copy. It seems ok, but I've lost some confidence. I decided to stay away from the 50-135 due to the rash of SDM failure reports at a couple of different forums. Pentax is going to have to convince me that they can reliably manufacture durable lenses before I buy another one. Re: [k10d] replicating custom white balance in kelvin + offsets?
When I have to do a custom white balance, which of course is only when shooting jpegs, I just use the grey card or a white card for that matter. If I don't like the results, I use the -3 +3 adjustments. It doesn't really mater what the Kelvin temp might be if the shots look good. The only time I shoot jpegs is for virtual tours. But many of these involve complex lighting: windows, tungsten, sometimes even some fluorescent. But the data is irrelevant. Only the results matter. My order is in
After considering all the alternatives, I ordered the DA* 60-250 when BH opened tonight. One important factor is that it leaves only a small gap of non-coverage when teamed with the DA* 16-50. An 80-200 leaves a much larger gap. I was also influenced by the test shots I've seen. The performance appears to be extremely good. So in a few days I can see for myself. PESOs - Blissful, Green Void
Two little PESOs to finish off the week... http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/09/09_05/09_05_greenvoid/01.htm http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/09/09_05/09_05_blissful/01.htm A comment about the new-to-me DA14mm that I haven't read on the interwebs...what a nice focus mechanism. Not quite the buttery feel of ye olde manual focus lenses, but so nicely damped, it almost could be. Well done, Pentax dudes. -- der...@iinet.net.au http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

This time I decided that I could post a PESO of exclusively Galia's shots. http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2009/05/peso-2009-017.html For those who hadn't seen my face yet, there is one there... Be brutal and honest. Comments about my beard will be disregarded ;-). I am too lazy to shave. Boris She's going to thank you in years to come for encouraging her, Boris. Nice. I shoot, I don't test either. But for the common good, those DA tests are coming up. I'd have them now, but the Noritsu at my local has gone kaput, so they have to send out the film while they source a new machine. There are some surprises in there I think (to me at least). -- der...@iinet.net.au http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
