Good deal. How big are the samples?
The Rosco book that I got (also free) is a little small for my Matz 60

 I'll check when I get home but they're about 35-40mm x 70-75mm

I just measured them the sample gels are 38x90mm.

For what it is, no it is not that much.

And no, I'm not particularly interested in seeing quality comparisons.
My el-cheapo 18-55 lens regularly knocks my socks off in terms of
image quality. I'm sure the $1,200 lens will be just fine.

Sure and I know that the 70-210A are great lenses. But they aren't
brand-new, they aren't weather sealed and they aren't autofocus.

I wonder if anyone would care to figure out how much the A70-210 went
for brand-new and adjust that for inflation? I'd bet there wouldn't be
that big a difference.

Overcropped or not, that's excellent feather detail.
Completely convincing water, also, which is not always the case in

Can quite see why you like it!

Like I said earlier, you can get smc-A/70-210mm/4 lenses in LIKE NEW
stone mint
condition for $139 fairly easily on ebay. Sure, weather sealing, greater
zoom
range, and AF definately add value to the DA lens but it would
NOT add over a $1200 value to a $139 lens to ME if the image
quality was only the same in the DA lens. To each his own. There is also
the
possiblility that the DA lens wont cover FF digital in the future
as well as the A lens does. Thats a possible liability, not a plus
for the DA lens. Bottom line is that I wouldnt pay the $1200 premium
if the A70-210 was just as good optically for the DA60-250. The $1200
saved could buy to many other MUCH more valuable features to me like
more
good lenses and good DSLR bodies. To some, the extra things the DA60-250
does
would be worth that premium, but not for me. We are talking 10 times the
price
or approx $1200 more for the DA lens vs the A lens mentioned. Thats
really

A70-210/4 assessment

2009-05-09 Thread Mark Erickson
I saw the A70-210/4 vs DA* 60-250 thread

I have an A70-210/4 that I bought off of eBay a couple of years ago for
around $120. It's in practically new condition, came with the original
Pentax hard case, etc.

Physical Characteristics: It has a full metal body with a built-in
slide-out hood. It is long and heavy and has the classic one-touch control
that you push-pull to zoom and twist to focus.

Optical Characteristics: I haven't done formal tests, but I have shot
detailed stuff at distance. At 200mm, it is quite sharp (even wide open) on
my K10D. It has a nice close-focus macro mode. It does show some purple
fringing in strong backlight situations.

Usability: I tip my hat to everyone who ever did action/sports photography
with manual focus zooms back in the day. It is difficult. The one-touch
focus/zoom doesn't help me much, either. Without a focus aid like a
split-prism screen, I find it hard to nail focus down exactly on my K10D
(and *ist-Ds).

My bottom line: For deliberate photography such as landscape, scenic,
macro, posed portraits, and such, I think it is a great lens. The results
are good and it's a stop faster than anything else short of $1000+ lenses.
It doesn't work for me for fast-response photography (sports, chasing my
kids around, action weddings, wildlife, etc.).

So, depending on the application, I think that the 10x cost premium of the
DA* 60-250 may not be worth it, or may be totally necessary.

I saw the A70-210/4 vs DA* 60-250 thread

I have an A70-210/4 that I bought off of eBay a couple of years ago for
around $120. It's in practically new condition, came with the original
 Pentax hard case, etc.

and there was much snippage

So, depending on the application, I think that the 10x cost premium of the
DA* 60-250 may not be worth it, or may be totally necessary.

I have a really old pre A series Tokina 80-200/2.8 lens. It's fabulously
sharp, even wide open it's decent, it doesn't flare like crazy (good hood
though), and I have yet to see any purple fringing.
However, I have trouble tracking and keeping fast moving subjects such as my
dogs in focus with it. I suspect a 60-250 is going to find its way into my
kit.
It's not that my 80-200 isn't a good imager, it's that I want what the
60-250 offers, and if can I justify the price of admission.

If you are going to use MF lenses, why not install a better manual focus
screen?
(Do they interfere with AF operation? I dont know, possibly alter stop
down metering wtih K/M lenses)
I put a split image RF with microprism focus screen in my istDS when I
first got
it a few years ago and havent missed many if any focus shots since. The
one I got works
well on quality F4 to F5.6 lenses or faster. I find the better the
quality
of the lens the clearer the split image seperates. This is one of the
reasons
I PREFER manual focus most of the time. I KNOW where I want to focus and
I KNOW
Im going to get that in focus, and easily. No, I dont do sports or
reportage/action where AF
really pays off, but I have NO difficulty nailing focus manually on
static / slow subjects using
the DS split screen in average to bright light, Id estimate my batting
average as .999 or better. Out of focus
is a virtual non issue for me on my type of shots shooting w manual
focus. That said, I
dont do very low light work either. I have been lately using a tamron sp
80-200/2.8 in the focal
range we have been discussing but that lens is so bright and contrasty I
can practically
manual focus it in the dark with the split image rf screen in the DS.

It is long and heavy and has the classic one-touch
control that you push-pull to zoom and twist to focus.

Optical Characteristics: I haven't done formal tests, but I have shot
detailed stuff at distance. At 200mm, it is quite sharp (even wide
open) on my K10D. It has a nice close-focus macro mode. It does show
some purple fringing in strong backlight situations.

Usability: I tip my hat to everyone who ever did action/sports
photography with manual focus zooms back in the day. It is difficult.
The one-touch focus/zoom doesn't help me much, either. Without a focus
aid like a split-prism screen, I find it hard to nail focus down exactly
on my K10D (and *ist-Ds).

My bottom line: For deliberate photography such as landscape, scenic,
macro, posed portraits, and such, I think it is a great lens. The
results are good and it's a stop faster than anything else short of
$1000+ lenses. It doesn't work for me for fast-response photography
(sports, chasing my kids around, action weddings, wildlife, etc.).

So, depending on the application, I think that the 10x cost premium of
the
DA* 60-250 may not be worth it, or may be totally necessary.

I had one--bought it from a member of this list (or its predecessor) for
~$1100 around 2000. Nice glass, but really big and really heavy. I sold it
for $2000 on eBay in 2006 and bought my 31, 43, and 77 limited lenses with
the $$$. I use them far more than I ever used my FA* 80-200 F2.8.

I also had an FA* 28-70 F2.8 lens. It worked ok, but didn't seem all that
durably built. Some other folks on this list had terrible troubles with
theirs. I sold it for what I paid for it, so no net loss there.

What keeps me from buying the 60-250 (besides the $$$) at this point is my
lack of trust in the Pentax DA* lenses. I have no interest whatsoever in
dropping more than $1000 for something that may or may not have a fatal
design/manufacturing flaw. I have a 16-50. It went back to Pentax USA
twice because of quality control problems. The second time they replaced it
with a different copy. It seems ok, but I've lost some confidence.

I decided to stay away from the 50-135 due to the rash of SDM failure
reports at a couple of different forums. Pentax is going to have to
convince me that they can reliably manufacture durable lenses before I buy
another one. Maybe a year from now, if the 60-250's out in the wild are
still working, I'll consider one.

Dropped off some 120 E-6 at Ritz today

2009-05-09 Thread Mark Roberts
I stopped by Pittsburgh's sole surviving Ritz Photo today to get some
Velvia from my Pentax 67 processed. They said it will take about two
weeks as they now send out all their E-6. Last year they did it in
house, as I recall.

Virtually everything in the shop was marked down drastically. I don't
think this store will survive long, even though it's not on the list
of Ritz stores being closed as part of their restructuring.

This is huge, actually. It's astounding how many SDM failures just all of a
sudden have been reported.
It's made worse by the fact that SDM isn't giving a significant performance
increase (it's significanly slow on the 55/1.4), and if the lens has a screw
drive, you can't switch over to it if the focus motor fails.

2009-05-09 Thread JC OConnell
While I dont doubt you have enjoyed and used your 31,43, and 77 mm
lenses more, but
those are not valid arguments against the FA80-200/2.8 or the 70-210 or
60-250mm
lenses, those are primes not zooms and with the exception of the 77mm
lens are not
even close to being same focal range as the 60-250 lens being
considered.

FWIW, there have been two recent clean used fa80-200/2.8 sales on ebay
in the $1400-1600
range, not that far off the $1350 price(new) of the 60-250/4 and the
focal range is
somewhat similar.

My tamron sp 80-200/2.8 is 1400g and not really that bad weight wise.
the pentax FA 80-200/2.8 is 1500g
which to me would not be that bad either for a lens of that speed and
range. If size and weight
is a primary concern, the A70-210/4 is only 2/3 the weight of the
DA60-250 around 680g for the A70-210/4
vs ~1000g for the DA/60-250/4.

For anyone on tight budget, the tamron sp 80-200/2.8 is a great value. I
got mine
for under $300 a few years ago. I think they are still fairly
inexpensive. the performance
is really outstanding and you can get a A version of the adaptall2
mount too.

I had to send my first DA* 16-50 back, but the replacement has been so
good, it made me forget. I've shot over 10,000 frames with it for
virtual tours, and every frame has been right on. My 50-135 has been
great from the start. I hadn't heard of any focus problems. But the DP
folks whine about everything so I wouldn't put much stock in it.

I would guess that the long delay on the 60-250 had something to do
with resolving quality control problems that arose with the DA*16-50.
I'm not concerned about the quality, only the price. I know that if I
buy from BH, and it's defective, they'll replace it.

I looked at the Sigma 70-200/2.8. It's gotten some good reviews, and
it's available for about $600. But it's not as long, and Sigma quality
has always been a bit suspect. I'm leaning toward the 60-250.

it appears to be a mountain bike, which may not be well suited for fitness
cycling. I think a road bike would be better for fitness, but in any case
you will have to cycle at fairly high speeds for long periods of time to get
the kind of fitness benefit you get from running. I think the ratio is
something like 4 miles of cycling for every mile of running, at the same
heartrate, to get the same fitness benefit.

If you have a heart rate monitor it might be worthwhile to measure yourself
over your regular run, then take the bike out the following day instead of
your run and try and cycle at the same heartrate and see if you can keep
that up for the same length of time as your run.

hanging in the garage. It's about 25 years old. Needs a fair amount of work.
Is it worth fixing? Or should I just spring for something new?
  Paul

Your Nishiki has a very nicely made CroMo frame. If the drive train
is in good condition it's definitely worth fixing up. Maybe new
tires, tubes, brake pads and perhaps some new cabling. Having this
done at a bike shop isn't cheap, but it will still be considerably
less expensive than a new bike.

If your drive train needs major work, e.g. new bottom bracket, chain
rings, cassette, etc., it's going to become a labor of love and you're
probably better off just buying something new. I do this sort of
thing all the time, but I have the tools for it and a pretty good
supply of old bikes coming in. Turning 3 or 4 of them into one decent
bike is fun. I doubt I'd do it if I had to buy new parts for
everything.

... and all the argument about when to merge came home yesterday.

As I came home from work yesterday, there was a traffic accident in
street ahead. Fire truck and several police cars blocking the center
left turn lane and the left lane; traffic had to merge right to clear
the accident.

Everyone seemed to be doing a good job, the people already IN the right
lane were making room for the people in the left lane and the people in
the left lane were going ahead and merging to keep traffic flowing.

Then when the left lane was clear ahead to the point of the accident,
some *ASSHOLE* in a big black SUV, tinted windows, vanity license plate
BUNCO-something or other, pulls out and passes everybody, forces a merge
at the last instant before slamming into the stopped fire truck - the
rest of the traffic in the right lane has to slam on brakes to avoid a
chain collision ...

S.O.B. should be shot.

Re: [k10d] replicating custom white balance in kelvin + offsets?

:)

I guess the way to figure -3 to +3 what? would be to establish the zero
point (what is the Kelvin value of zero in this instance?) then look to see
what the Kelvin values are at +1, -1, etc, and the interval would establish
what they (Pentax) consider the units.
 Make sense?

Yeah, it makes sense, but for two things. First, the kelvin value displayed
doesn't actually change -- the G-M/B-A grid is over to the right of that
value and appears completely independent. And that's the second thing: the
Kelvin scale measures along a blue-red axis. The green-magenta axis isn't
related to that, so it makes sense that the Kelvin values aren't changed by
it. But the blue-amber axis, by virtue of including blue, seems like it must
have a complicated relationship with the Kelvin number.

And I guess that's the third thing: it's hard to measure the actual impact
of changes here.

I suppose the test is to shoot a gray card with the custom white balance
set to the card itself, and then see what divergence I get by changing the
scale on *that* screen around.

But even then, that's only part of the puzzle, and it seems like it should
be the *harder* part, when I haven't even solved the easier part. Namely,
once one has set the white balance with the gray card, there's no way to get
a display of what Kelvin value that represents -- let alone the other
offsets.

I could buy an expensive color meter, of course, but that seems really weird
to have to do when the camera clearly has one _built in_. Why can't it just
display its readings?

2009-05-09 Thread paul stenquist
When I have to do a custom white balance, which of course is only when
shooting jpegs, I just use the grey card or a white card for that
matter. If I don't like the results, I use the -3 +3 adjustments. It
doesn't really mater what the Kelvin temp might be if the shots look
good. The only time I shoot jpegs is for virtual tours. But many of
these involve complex lighting: windows, tungsten, sometimes even some
fluorescent. But the data is irrelevant. Only the results matter.

After considering all the alternatives, I ordered the DA* 60-250 when

small gap of non-coverage when teamed with the DA* 16-50. An 80-200
leaves a much larger gap. I was also influenced by the test shots I've
