OT PESO - Milky Way Rainbow

2009-06-24 Thread David Savage
G'day Folks,

Another night shot from my trip up north:

Direct link (~170kb)

D700, AF-D 20mm f2.8, 31seconds @ f5.6, ISO 6400. 7 frame panorama,
stitched in PTGui, tided up in PS & finished off in LR.

It's pretty cool to stand in a relatively isolated spot, listening to
the sound of bats & howling dingos, while watching the Milky Way
stretch from one horizon to another. It literally sent a shiver down
my spine.

This is one of those occasions where doing a panorama was the only way
to capture the view. My widest lens at that time (20mm) wasn't wide
enough to fit it all in.

I have been wanting to retry a night sky pano since an somewhat
unsuccessful attempt on my Kalgoorlie road trip in Feb. This one kinda
works.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Dave

Hmm... the midground thing could maybe be accomplished with the curves
tool. However I kinda like it as it is, to draw attention to the
flowers.

On the issue of ND filters I don't have an awful lot of good to say
about them. I think the shading effect introduced to uneven horizons
are in most cases worse than overly bright skies. As it stands with
this shot, however, I know there's detail in the highlights, that can
be pulled down if needed. :-)

Thanks for commenting Brian.
I have a hard time controlling just one flash. So when you say you
sometimes use two, you're way ahead of me. :-)

So far this softbox thingy looks good. I had one before too, but much
smaller. The former one was about double the area of the flash itself.
That didn't make much of a difference at all. The current one is 4-5
the area of the flash (at least).

certainly not any kind of attempt at art, just a reflection of what
I've been shooting. I seem to have been using my camera for
documenting my work more than anything else of late so here goes.

All shot using my trusty old *ist D (throw in the rucksack camera) and
DA16-45 lens (but one), all hand held, plenty flexible and capable
enough for making good records of work progress.

I wondered about the light, assuming it to be rays from the sun reaching over

It is usually the quickest way to find species names because of the
crosslinks between languages.

Rob,

I like the combination of the foreground and background colors,
and the DOF works well here.

It might be my present mood (and I've been criticized for it by some
people), - but I would try to sharpen it just a touch.
I would also crop it to a square (a la 6x6).

...and it happened only a few minutes ago.

I apologise in advance for the off topicness of this post but I just
need to get it off my chest.

I am 31 years old, and will be 32 in December.

I have kept in my possession since I was 15/16 years old a particular
leather belt & eagles head belt buckle. The buckle is gaudy and ugly,
but at that time was a cool thing to have.

At around this age the belt became too small for me. A trip to one of
the leather goods stalls at the local markets was made to enquire
about having a new belt custom made so that I could keep using my
prized buckle. This lead to a comment that has stuck with me since
then. He said he could make me a belt, but not in 1 strip of leather
as "Cows are only so big". Demoralised I gave up on the belt & buckle
& got a regular leather dress belt.

I just tried on my old belt

It fits again. With holes to spare

K10D and K4/300?

own tripod collar.

Any ideas or experiences from list members?

Stop doing things like that. I want to take pictures that nice and
can't afford a D700. :)

I just noticed that that is a "D" lens. Are you getting vignetting on
your D700? Or do you clean that up when stitching together the pano?

> stitched in PTGui, tided up in PS & finished off in LR.

Do you have problems with star alignment when stitching together night
shots like that?

I've got an idea, for the cost of a D700, I could get three K20s, and
set up a bracket and wiring to do simultaneous three camera
panos. It'd be a little unweildy, but I'd get more sensor area than
the D700, and wouldn't have to worry about movement between frames.

:)

I'm lucky that I have just barely enough sense to not try such a
stunt, but it could be a fun thing to set up at PDML gatherings. It
might be a fun GFM project, setting up an 8 camera pano, the only
trick would be to wire up a bunch of remote shutter releases in
parallel.

I had one of those once. Yes, the lack of a collar is concerning.

I believe Manfrotto makes an attachment that works for lenses like
this giving them support. You might want to look into that.

It seems heavy compared to most modern lenses but it's only 20% heavier
than the A*300 f4.0 and I've not noticed any real problems when that

doubt it.

Very nice but I'd like it more if the midground was a little brighter.
Nicely composed, probably would have benefited from the use of an ND
filter.

Hmm... the midground thing could maybe be accomplished with the curves
tool. However I kinda like it as it is, to draw attention to the
flowers.

Just a personal preference of mine. A very nice image as is.

On the issue of ND filters I don't have an awful lot of good to say
about them. I think the shading effect introduced to uneven horizons
are in most cases worse than overly bright skies. As it stands with
this shot, however, I know there's detail in the highlights, that can
be pulled down if needed. :-)

Thanks for commenting, Ken. Much appreciated.

That shot does not suck.

D700, AF-D 20mm f2.8, 31seconds @ f5.6, ISO 6400. 7 frame panorama,

Stop doing things like that. I want to take pictures that nice and
can't afford a D700. :)

Or the cost of transport to Australia.

I just noticed that that is a "D" lens. Are you getting vignetting on
your D700? Or do you clean that up when stitching together the pano?

stitched in PTGui, tided up in PS & finished off in LR.

Do you have problems with star alignment when stitching together night
shots like that?

It's pretty cool to stand in a relatively isolated spot, listening to
the sound of bats & howling dingos, while watching the Milky Way
stretch from one horizon to another. It literally sent a shiver down
my spine.

This is one of those occasions where doing a panorama was the only way
to capture the view. My widest lens at that time (20mm) wasn't wide
enough to fit it all in.

It
might be a fun GFM project, setting up an 8 camera pano, the only
trick would be to wire up a bunch of remote shutter releases in
parallel.

I have been wanting to retry a night sky pano since an somewhat
unsuccessful attempt on my Kalgoorlie road trip in Feb. This one kinda
works.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Dave

Kirk sells a tripod collar for a specific Nikon lens, the last time I
looked. They weren't interested in a similar collar for my 300 4.5 FA when
last I approached them.

I believe Manfrotto makes an attachment that works for
lenses like
this giving them support. You might want to look into
that.

Looks like an additional support where the lens still needs to have its
own thread.

I've had one of these in a cupboard for years...

http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/pid/3224

...and sold it a few weeks ago because I couldn't be bothered to use it.
A real pain in the neck with landscape and virtually unusable for
portrait orientation.

Someone on a German list suggested these...

...but the trouble with the K4/300 ist that, even if it had the correct
diameter, there's practically nowhere to fix such a collar to this lens.
