I might be mis-understanding the problem but I seem to recall some
discussion on this a month or so ago. According to this post from Mark,
the 4 way controller can be set to provide access to functions or as a
focus point selector (via a custom setting?? - I don't know).

Anyway here's the relevant post:

Something got changed between the cameras at GFM and the production

Mark and friends at GFM had the problem underestimated, while Bill has got

However, Pentax will fix it soon by adding a menu option allowing to select
the default operation of the arrow keys (Function recall or AF point
selection).

Now, about the 4 way controller.
Unless I've missed something, the 4 way controller is broken. By default,
it

to get it to work as an AF point selector. Unfortunately, it won't bloody
stay as a focus point controller when set to that function. It takes
every
possible opportunity to revert to function control.
Check your exposure with the instant review, when you go to take a
picture,
you've lost access to focus point selection. Let the camera go to sleep,
its
back to function select when you wake it up. Turn it off and back on, it
is
on function control again. I believe I had it revert a few times just
because, and not for any reason I could fathom.
There is a little icon in the viewfinder that lights up to tell the
operator
that the focus point controller is active, but I still found it to be
really
annoying to have to be constantly resetting the function

Note to Pentax: Please put an option in the remembered settings to allow
one
to choose what the 4 way switch defaults to.

That K-7 with 0.something firmware I checked at Pentax Day already operated
as your 1.0 camera does about the 4-way controller, hence I believe the
folks at GFM just didn't realize what they had to check.

However, there will be a firmware update very soon, fixing the mess.

That's a fairly big wtf for me. I use manual AF point selection
most of the time on the K10D and I change it often, especially when
swinging between portrait landscape. It was bugging me enough on
Sunday that I tried the auto point selection but I found it wasn't so
good with long glass.

I really like the idea of eye-controlled AF point selection... do
Canon still use that or did it not work out for them?

Good to hear from Dario that the issue will be resolved in a firmware

PESO - Bush Shed; Take 2

2009-07-07 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

Thanks for the comments on the first version.

Bill - appreciate you taking the time to do a revised crop but I can't
quite make up my mind on it. I think the image is
improved without the shadow but the shed then looks a bit low in the
frame and the right hand edge of the fenced paddock is lost.

I've had another go at it, retaining the original crop but reducing the
brightness of the shed (thanks Jack, Dave) and trying to reduce the
depth of foreground shadow (thanks Bruce).

Thanks also Christine, Ken and Dan for the comments.

Anyway, here's the revised version. You can compare with the earlier
one by using the Previous link.

this stuff--it's been awhile since I learned something new that was this
challenging; I really enjoyed the challenge, wanted to overcome the
obstacles, and my brain was feeling hot and exercised--which it hasn't felt
 in some time.

Hey Christine,

Been away for nearly two weeks, and reading this whole thread in one go...
By the time I got to your post above, I was thinking that those two
days must have been well spent for you. :-)

Thing is, even with the best WYSIWYG editors, you will occasionally
stumble onto some glitch. Either in the way the code is generated, or
because you make typos that hide themselves like needles in heystacks.
:-( - been there... :-) So that's where your two-day investment comes
in handy. Now you know a fair bit of what's going on behind the WYS.

FWIW, EditPad from JGsoft is similar to HTMLkit, but in my experience
much better. As in more stable on my systems (both work and private),
and more functionality. It's not freeware, however, so try the kit
first. That too is a good piece of software.

If it's any comfort, I spent a lot more than two days to learn HTML. :-)

* A cute as pie Sekonic L-VI meter

reliable, but it makes my M3s look the business
* A near mint black Spotmatic F, with a jewel-like SMC Tak 35/3.5 and a
fun-guy 50mm/1.4 Super-tak that I might use to practice lens disassembly
using this page:

http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~Srawhiti/pentax50mmf1.4.html

(my, the spottie is gorgeous in it's glossy finish)

Anyhoo...OT...today, I was enquiring about my Voigt R2A which is with
Voigtlander pusher for service (he's going to send it back to Cosina for
free). He happen to mention he only had two 50mm/1.1 Noktons left, and
Cosina were only going to send just 5 more. That would be it for a while
until the next production run. Seeing how the price is cheaper than even
in Japan or the US, I couldn't resist. I now have #293

More details on the lens here: http://www.cameraquest.com/voigt_5011.htm

Have a gig at the this week at the fab, but very dark Hopetoun hotel on

Re: The K-7 in the Studio.

2009-07-07 Thread Derby Chang

That controller issue is unfortunate, but can I ask the obvious
question...do we get to see the model?

D

William Robb wrote:
Well, as promised, I did a model shoot with the K-7 today. I did not
get out for my expedition of photographic proportion though, so to say
I was a bit unfamiliar with the camera would be an understatement. The
model was very understanding of my lacking of eptitude and I was
getting the hang of the camera by the end of the shoot.

So, where to start.
The K-7 is much smaller than the K10/K20. More so than what one would
think. It feels much more compact in the hand, And I found I was often
over reaching for the 4 way controller.

More on that fiasco in a moment.

I shot almost everything today with the 70/2.4, though I did some
shooting with the 55/1.4
The vertical grip is amazing. It balances perfectly with both the
rather petite Limited lens, and the much larger DA* lens. Shooting
horizontal felt a bit cramped, I often found myself getting lost on
the 4 way switch and pressing the liveview button instead.
Shooting vertically, the 4 way is a reach if I use my index finger on
the shutter, switching over to using my ring finger for pressing the
shutter worked a lot better.

Now, about the 4 way controller.
Unless I've missed something, the 4 way controller is broken. By
default, it provides access to the various functions, and one has to
press the OK button to get it to work as an AF point selector.
Unfortunately, it won't bloody stay as a focus point controller when

it to be really annoying to have to be constantly resetting the function

The user mode is still broken as far as I am concerned. I would really
like the user mode to allow me to lock in a shutter speed and aperture
combination by programming it in manual mode.
It would also be nice to have multiple user setups available like the
istD had.

However, to get that I'm not willing to give anything else up.
I have my user mode set up to do HDR's, since I likely won't use it
for anything else.

Autofocus with the 70mm lens was quick and accurate enough most of the
time. The end focus point struggled a bit if I had the lights a bit
far away, but the more central AF points were quick to lock with very
little hunting. I'm quite certain that a timed test would show an
improvement in AF speed with this lens anyway. The 55/1.4 is another
story. AF was about as fast as with the K20.
The camera showed no focus inaccuracy under the incandescent modeling
lights, and the auto white balance is just about perfect.

I shot a grand total of 1584 images in just over 2.5 hours. That works
out to one shot every 5.5 seconds or some such. Other than the 4 way
controller issue, the camera was flawless for the entire shoot. The
camera is quiet and competent and very easy to use. There are a few
major differences between it and the K20 that I found a bit confusing.
as an example, I wanted to check the ISO before starting, and drew a
complete blank for half a minute regarding where to find it (the
button conveniently marked ISO is a good place to look).
Using an Extreme III 8gb card, the file writing light flashed for
perhaps a second and went out after taking a picture. The camera does
write files much quicker.

Interestingly, my DNG files are between 11mb and 12.5 mb.
This is about half the size of a K20 DNG, so I must presume that
Pentax has decided to compress them in camera. I hadn't heard anything
about this during pre release discussion.

Perhaps I slept through that class.
Oh and, the camera doesn't use power. I did the entire shoot with the
battery that came with it. After a while I kept expecting it to die on
me, but it just kept going. Almost 1600 shots on a single battery
using AF lenses, and I could have kept going.

I do keep my chimping to a minimum, but this is still pretty impressive.

The 70mm lens is one that I haven't used very often. I think that is
about to change though. It is a very pleasing little lens to use, and
returns really nice pictures. I have been finding manual focus under
studio light to be a struggle lately, even with the 85/1.4, so I
elected to go with AF. The lens performed flawlessly with the camera,
I don't think it missed focus once.

 * A near mint black Spotmatic F, with a jewel-like SMC Tak 35/3.5

H. How did I miss that one. :-)

and a

 using this page:

That's better. My crop was a little tight. A friend of mine who shoots this
sort of thing does pretty much all his shots with the intention of doing
them into HDR. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It might be

Pentax is being very particular lately.

Things are really getting out of hand. First they wreck their German
customer service which was one of the main arguments for people buying
Pentax, over here. Meanwhile, the German discussion forums are full of
people who've last seen their cameras nine or more weeks ago.

Then, they generate the hype of the century for a camera that's no more
than a pimped-up K20D, and now it appears that someone has terribly
misunderstood the notion of Pentax as poor man's Leica.

What next?

As if the wrecking of their customer service hadn't been enough.

What's your point? I did not check how much lens prices exploded. Do you
care about the recommended price of the K-7 at 1379 EUR?

The DA 18-55 WR costs 70 EUR extra (instead of 229),
the DA 50-200 WR costs 150 EUR extra (instead of 329)

The K20D is at 1249,
+50 EUR for the DA 18-55 II (instead of 229)

Street price for the K20D was down to 630 EUR, now slightly higher.

K200D was down to 449 EUR, gone by now?

K-m: 499,
+150 EUR for DA L 18-55 and DA L 50-200 (worth 558)

K-m only together with 50-200? Street price was down to 465 EUR instead of
659 EUR...

I don't know last year's prices by heart. Do you have them for direct
comparison?

It was to expect that prices would become much higher, since the same
happened in UK + USA (and whereelse?).

Sell 100 for 1 % profit or 4 with 25 % is the same for the company (and more
much to expect within the current global market) - and increasing the price
from 99 to 129 (add a currency of your preference) can be reasonable. Pentax
has never had a significant market share within the last years. I guess that
the new marketing stopped fighting for higher market shares by being much
cheaper.

Maybe they are convinced that people will run for the K-7 and will accept
higher lens prices.

Maybe they are perfectly wrong and Pentax will drown at all.

Or maybe prices will drop soon again when the big CN would have
cheaper options.

Two examples, list of august 2008 - new list:

DA 12-24: 699 - 1299

DA 35 Limited: 399 - 729

Somewhat above inflation and in no relation to recent exchange rate

This is pure and simple greed: Hoya's attempt to reach two-figure

u, no, the the USA rolling 12 month CPI has actually fallen for year
ending in may2009, housing and energy costs
are the biggest drops. the weak economy has caused price drops, not
increases to move things.
high unemployment is a big factor too. Just look at ebay, nearly
everything is selling for less than
it was 18-24 months ago. Camera gear included. Lenses are down in price
there from the peaks
for sure. For how long, who knows ??

Ebay has more listings than ever, but less total sales. Prices are down.
Unsold items
are up. Ebay is a pretty good indicator of the world economy because of
the nature
of auction type pricing and sales.

and feel of an entire web site, but most people don't need that kind of
 capability).

 Christine Aguila wrote:

Up until 2 days ago I had never written 1 line of html code--not one--for
any purpose.  I have spent the last two days, however, learning about html
and learning how to write some html code using Notepad so that I might get a
simple index page up.  Oh my gosh, am I brain dead. (Aside:  as I write
this, I can hear the most beautiful live xylophone music coming through my
study window.  It's absolutely delightful.  Someone is playing in his or her
backyard somewhere across the alley.)  I did, in fact, get something
written, but oh, is it stinky--and I never did get it just the way I wanted.

On the one hand I am a bit proud that I learned to write some code--and I
learned how to write a css style sheet--and I was successful at linking the
two, though they didn't link at first, and it took me forever to find the
typo.  I had written *type=test/css* instead of *text*.  Ugh!  And I got
the jpeg to link to where I *almost* wanted it, but I never could figure out
how to get my little two item list to align the way I wanted to.  Still,
like I said, I'm a bit proud of my meager results here.

But that's just the problem--oh, how meager the results are!  I have no
problem being a beginner at anything--it's where everyone starts when
learning something new, but gee wiz, you'd think after 2 days I'd be a
little further along!  Moreover, I started looking at the code for some
elegantly simple web pages that I admire, and I'm totally intimidated by the
complexity of the code and feel quite sure it would take me most of the next
12 months just to get close to learning this stuff.

Hence, I'm going to throw in the towel and will probably use Word Web
 Pages to get something up.

Lastly, to all you Cyber Techie Code Writers who can write this stuff at
the speed of light, I sincerely tip my hat to you in admiration.  Cheers,
 Christine

dammit, we need to send smarter people to GFM.

I've been shooting with this camera almost every day for the last month
and I have yet to see this as an issue worth getting upset about. In Sel
mode you push the OK button and use the D-pad to move the focus points.
Very simple. Any deviation from that has been due to my own fumble
fingers or more likely my wandering off from the task at hand.

I won't disagree with what Bill experienced; the camera does do that
(except maybe for reverting to default for spite) but I think I've just
become accustomed to hitting the OK button after I've been doing
something other than moving the focus point, and I agree that a custom
option that locks in the D-pad when you turn the indicator to SEL would
be a good thing, in practice I've just not seen it as that big a deal.

Maybe my big deal threshold is higher. I dunno. Or maybe some other
things have been more of an annoyance *to me*, like how fiddly it is to
remove the SD card, or that the camera seems to default to the highest
ISO in the auto range.

I'm not sure on that last point, It's just a feeling I have, and I don't
have a manual yet to look it up. Maybe Bill could look it up for me.
