As usual it is always useful to look at who is disseminating this kind of
information. In this case it is a front organisation for the alcohol,
tobacco and 'restaurant' (read McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's etc)
industry. This means, of course, that the information they provide is not
necessarily the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It's
propaganda (like the information that PETA puts out) and you would be wise
not to take it at face value.

Or get a fixie. You'll like it now that you don't have to deal with

double-sided inkjet media recommendations?

Can anybody recommend some good double-sided media that comes in a 16" or

recommendations would be particularly welcome, but I'm not sure any exist,
so I'm happy to have advice on matte too.

B&H only carries Moab Kayenta -- any experiences with that?

Speaking of genetics, judging by your daughter your wife must be
stunningly beautiful.

The studio she and her dance partner have been using put on a show Sunday.
Shooting dancing is hard! The light isn't too good, motion is fast and all
over the place, and if one's timing is off one can make the most graceful
people look like clods.

It is indeed a challenge. You did a very credible job of it.

Fortunately Ellen and her partner performed about three-quarters of the way
through the afternoon, so I had some time to practice and sort out technique.
They performed a very intricate waltz, which her partner had choreographed.

(K10D, DA 50-200; fixed manual exposure of f/4.5 @ 1/45, ISO 1100. Used a
one-stop gradient filter in LR to lighten the top 1/3 or so of most of the
shots).

I suspect that you're beginning to gain an appreciation of my
fascination for fast glass. If you can shoot them practicing sometime,
you might want to try a 50/1.4. Even an old supertak on an adapter can
do a very credible job, and if you're shooting wide open the lack of
auto stop down is no issue. If you need to crop, just think of it as
trading resolution for speed (f/1.4) and depth of field (since you
aren't zooming).

My one quibble with this set is that it looks like the color balance is
a touch off.

Whether PETA are a bunch of hypocritical scumbags has nothing to do
with whether it's ethical to eat meat. Whether the consumption of
animal flesh is right or wrong has nothing to do with PETA, just as
(for instance) the issue of whether God exists has nothing to do with
organized religion.

That being said, my veganism is a personal choice and I don't judge
others for their dietary choices. Enjoy your steak, Bill! ;-)

If you're adjusting the finder lens (diopter), don't use an image through the
lens on the camera. Use instead the lines on the focusing screen. There may
be a considerable difference.

Modern focusing screens transmit more light directly than the ground-glass
screens of yore, for the sake of a brighter image--but less accurate manual
focusing.

Since they don't want us to eat meat, keep pets (PETA is, according to the
web page inked below, one of the biggest pet animal euthanizers in the USA),
or wear furs, if we follow their edicts, there won't be any point in keeping
domestic meat animals, pet animals or fur farm animals in existence.
Since domestic animals can't really exist in the wild, their species' would
dead end.
Goodbye dogs and cats, sayonara, you old cow, time for Miss Piggy's final
curtain call.

I've got no problems with the functionality. It seemed odd,
especially since the AF/M ring on my bigma disengages the drive gear.

It's just got a horribly lumpy feel in manual focus. They said it'll
take 3-4 weeks for them to repair it, so I'll send it in after the

Santa Cruz photo outing Sunday 27 December

2009-12-15 Thread Larry Colen
A friend is visiting between boxing day and new years eve. She wants
to do some group photo outings.

The first one planned will be Sunday 27 December, we'll meet at my
house and head out from there. I'm not sure of all of the details,
like what time we'll start or where, specifically we'll go, but there
is a lot to photograph in the area:

Bonny Doon Beach
Panther beach
various vinyards (which also do wine tasting)
Roaring camp rail road (especially the service yard)
covered bridge
Fall creek lime kilns
There are various roads with lots of cool little photo opportunities
around

Boomer's castle

Send me a note if you're interested. I can easily set up my van to
carry 8, and with a bit more work, 12.

A good friend of mine is a vegan, and she works in a restaurant. She
has one pair of leather shoes to wear to work because she says
everything else she's tried just didn't hold up. She also eats honey,
which probably means she's going straight to vegan hell.

I asked them if I could take their pic and they agreed. I don't know
if they "posed"; the way they're standing in the pic is the way they
were standing when I first saw them.

I know one of them has her eyes closed, but somehow I think that adds
to the photo (I'm sure not everyone agrees). It was the last frame on
the roll, otherwise I'd have taken a couple - as it turned out that
was a one-shot deal. And of course, I couldn't chimp to see if it
looked okay! (I don't think that I mentioned in the post that it was
taken with the Leica CL/40mm Summicron C/TriX)

Maybe they're "pleather"?

Seriously, when I went vegan, a vegan acquaintance of mine asked, "So
when are you having your leather-disposal party?" She got quite upset
when I told her that I wasn't having one.

My attitude is that having already bought leather products, it would
be wasteful to dispose of them before they're worn out, to buy
replacement items derived from non-animal sources. As my leather
items wear out, their replacements will be made from cruelty-free
resources.

I think that's responsible, and so do many other vegans and

If the lens were bad optically, I'd just return it. It's too much to
ask that all lenses feel like a supertak 50, but this one is beyond
reasonable.

I have the Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8 macro. I know it isn't the same lens, but
it is closely related, and the manual focus feeling doesn't have
anything to do with your experiences with the EX 24 mm. If you disengage
autofocus BOTH on the camera and lens, manual focusing with my lens
isn't stiff at all, it is very fluid and nearly as good as with
traditional manual focus lenses. So I'd say that your 24 lens is
defective and you should exchange it.

Like I wrote in a previous message some days ago, you must be sure you
disengage AF by using both the camera AF/MF switch and also by pushing
the focusing ring on the lens towards the camera body, as,
unfortunately, these Sigma lenses can't deactivate the AF motor in the
camera body only by using the lens clutch, like genuine Pentax FA*
lenses do (FA* 24 mm. 2.0, FA* 300 mm. 4.5, FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and some
others).

Obviously correct. When adjusting my diopter, I ignore the viewfinder image and
concentrate on the sharpness of the lines on the focus screen. As you said, the
diopter's only purpose is to focus the image of the screen. If the view through
the lens is out of focus, a correctly adjusted diopter will provide a view of
teh out of focus image, but any markings on the focus screen will be sharp.

Thanks, Paul.
Actually, you and I probably have a lot in common, interest wise.
I love cars, especially the 50's to 70's. I even raced some NHRA stock
classes back in the early to mid 60's. Not much to talk about but did
have fun!
My dad grew up in MI after WWI before moving on to Chicago. He liked
MI but hated Chicago. Being a Polok in South Side during the
depression probably didn't help!

Since my eyesight slowly but surely deteriorates I suppose it would make
no harm for me to take a sharp lens, say FA 43 or FA 77 and auto-focus
it on something easy, say, a target recommended by Larry. Then I will
see if my diopter is set properly.

Well, in the world where the laws of physics and optics apply, that
is nothing to do with the diopter. If there is a sharp image on the
focussing screen, but not at the same point as on the film/sensor plane,
that's caused by a problem with the placement of the focussing screen.

Plus the upside down MGA in a canal in Palm Beach with Scuba Divers

Cool Go-Kart photos in the Lakeland Autocross gallery

It looks like a 62 Vette with the exception of the heavily modified

flyer showing the car is the 1960 Show Car.

Searching for XP-700 led me to this write up about this one-off car

There are some real treasures in this archive of high quality photos.

I think that I agree with Jack, to crop the sky, probably between the

Re: Testing the sigma 20/1.8 a few galleries of test snapshots

On Dec 15, 2009, at 5:19 AM, Miserere wrote:

Larry,

I see nothing wrong with your test pics. Why is it exactly that you
want to return the lens or send it to Sigma?

Because the manual focus on it feels horrible. It's "lumpy" getting
stiff with every rotation of the auto focus drive screw, then loose on
the other half. This also sort of makes it tough to focus accurately
if the focus point is where it doesn't want to turn.

If the lens were bad optically, I'd just return it. It's too much to
ask that all lenses feel like a supertak 50, but this one is beyond
reasonable.

BTW, I really like the close-focus feature of my Sigma 24mm. I don't
know why most non-macro Pentax lenses don't focus closer than they do;
I like to get in really close with my wide angles.

The funny thing is that I wanted a longer macro lens, not a shorter one.

2009/12/15 Larry Colen :
I've been putting the Sigma 20/1.8 through its paces today. I need
to
decide whether to return it, exchange it at 47st, or send it to
Sigma for

repair.

Optically, I have no complaints. There are undoubtably sharper
lenses of
about this length, but there aren't many faster, at least not at a
price I

can afford.

In theory, I could exchange it at 47st and have a replacement
within a week,
but while it may be better, I suspect that it won't feel as good as
I'd
like. I'm hoping that if I send it to sigma, they'll give it a
little extra
attention and I'll get something back at the other end of the
spectrum when

it comes to focus feel.

I'm afraid that rather than doing the things I ought to, I kept using
"testing the lens" as an excuse to spend "a few minutes" taking
some test
photos. Here are some quick and dirty sets, minimal processing,
everything
hand held, most at ISO 100 to get an idea of the performance of the
Sigma.
I'm definitely satisfied with it. As a gallery, I should definitely
toss the

shots that aren't as good, but it's a test of the lens, not the
photographer:

On my way back from mailing one of the packages, I took a short
drive down
Lockhart Gulch road because I keep noticing scenic little bits
there. I
uploaded those shots to flickr at full resolution for the pixel
peepers:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622876841535/

There are some mushrooms growing on a stump in my front yard and
did a side

by side between the sigma and my dfa 50 as macros:

Sigma
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622877880533/

Pentax
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157623002486404/

I had to run to the lumber yard, took a few shots of the old
sawdust burner
and decided to see if I could get any shots at Roaring Camp
Railroad next

door:

Now, let me see. How does the song go?

Oh yes

"Tell me why (I bid on Shatner's old toupee)
They had it on eBay"

You look a little like you frightened yourself. Don't worry about it,
I often have hair like that first thing on the AM. ;)

May not have anything to do with it, but are you sure the diopter is set
> correctly?

That's not how the diopter correction works.

There's nothing you can do with the adjustment to make an out-of-focus
image on the focussing screen appear sharp.

My understanding of how he described the problem he had a sharp image
through the viewfinder when focusing manually, but the focus in the
captured image wasn't where it was in the viewfinder.

That describes the problem I experienced with the diopter.
