I don't like that you drive all the way down to practically my
neighborhood, and rather than driving 16 miles to have lunch with me,
you go and get all these great shots, totally showing me up.

You are a bad man Mr. Davis, a very bad man.

Next time you're in the neighborhood we should meet at the central texas
BBQ in castroville for lunch. That'll distract you from photography for
a bit.

I think these are transponder codes recorded by geo-stationary

Unlikely.

It's almost certainly done by working from the flight schedules, and
interpolating the plane position along a great circle route between
the departure and arrival cities.

I know because I did precisely that for Star Alliance as a screen-saver
over five years ago (which is quite possibly where the idea for this
came from; I even used the NASA "Blue Marble" map as the background,
and showed a day/night terminator, just as this example does). Mine
is also running in the Boeing customer demonstration area.

If you want to see it in HD resolution (1920x1080), with a few other
little tricks (Mercator projection for the background map, and the
shape of the terminator and the snow cover of the underlying maps
showing progress through a full year in the course of one cycle),
there's a large (83MB) animation available here:

I don't think that's the only meaning/connotation for that expression.
E.g. among dancers there is a phrase that a person has two left feet.
In some sports (e.g. board riding, and possibly jumping), it refers
to the actual thing (as opposed to "goofy" in snowboarding).

In any case, the religious connotation was not implied here.

Which of course neither you or Igor would have known...

Chicago questions:

2010-04-09 Thread Larry Colen

First question:
Are there any camera shops in Chicago that carry a good selection of
pentax gear?

I've found the 16-50 locally for $799, which considering its reputation
for being decentered may be worth the extra, plus sales tax of getting
it mail order.
However, if there's a shop in Chicago that has it for a good price,
maybe it'd be worthwhile to get it there.

I'd be a bit more confident buying a DA35 mail order, but it'd be nice
to see one in person.

Second question:
Would anyone be up to splitting a hotel room? Money not spent on hotel
could be spent on camera gear. I've got a friend I can crash with, but
she lives way north of downtown and I'd spend way too much time on the
train.

I'll offer mine the nebulous term by saying that if at

Many images can tolerate a certain amount of this condition,
but it's amount is the criteria and varies with each viewer.
Said areas must, of course, contain some available mask
detail which defines the surface.

IOW, I'm not talking about an absolute ball of glare

wherein no detail is discernible.

There's nothing nebulous about "blown out". Consider areas
of pure
white with no detail as Zone 9 on the Zone System
scale defined as
follows:

Zone 0 – key black or pure black – carbon or photo
paper black.
Zone 1 – near black – shadows in faint light or rooms
without light.
Zone 2 – dark gray/black – only subtle textures are
visible.
Zone 3 – very dark gray – distinct shadow texture is
visible.
Zone 4 – medium dark gray – slightly darker “black”
skin, dark foliage
or shadows in landscapes.
Zone 5 – medium gray or 18% gray – darker “white”
skin or lighter
“black skin,” light foliage or the dark blue of a clear
blue sky.
Zone 6 – mid-tone gray – average “white” skin or
shaded areas in snow
on a bright, sunlit day.
Zone 7 – light gray – pale “white” skin, a concrete
walkway in sunlight.
Zone 8 – gray/white, near white – distinct highlight
detail, like a
white wall in sunlight or brilliant surfaces in flat
light.
Zone 9 – known as key white or pure white – pure white
paper or snow
in bright sunlight.

(Normally I think of the Zones as being from 1-10, but
Ansel was a C
programmer and did a 0-based count ... ;-)

So, by definition, anything you want detail in is "blown
out" if your
exposure has placed it above Zone 8 on the above scale.

Since I've never seen any application use 16-bit number
scales to
describe pixel values, you can determine what areas of your
image are
"blown out" in Photoshop or Lightroom using either a
percentage scale
or an 8-bit pixel value scale and floating the cursor over
white-looking areas while looking at the information
display panel.
Presuming that the exposure did not go to saturation and
there is data
in those bright areas, you can place them in adjustment
using the
Exposure (aka white point) sliders. This table makes it
easy ...

http://homepage.mac.com/godders/zone-system-numbers.jpg

EG: you have a near blown out area in a photo that you want
to ensure
images with detail on screen and in your prints. Float the
cursor over
it in Lightroom and see that it is currently at about 94%
in all
channels (or in one of them if that is the significant
color of the
area). Nudge the Exposure slider in the negative direction
until it is
in the range of about 85-88% to set that as the brightest
point. Now
make adjustments with the mid-tone, black point and Tone
Panel to
bring the rest of the photo into line with a satisfactory
display.

A certain amount of area at Zone 9 is fine, as long as it's
not where
you wanted to convey detail. Too much Zone 9 in an image
generally
looks bad. Another thing to be aware of is that many papers
and
monitor screens cannot display the full 10 zone scale very
well, or
have non-linear characteristics ... That's why calibration,
profiling
and testing for DR are essential to good quality image
display,
whether on screen or on paper.

Wonderful photo!

How often does one have a chance to photograph one of the most famous
people in the world? You made the most of it, to be sure!

I saw a brief piece on him on a science show. His now famous
electronic voice is now very obsolete, insofar as it could be made to
sound much more "human". His is based on twenty year old technology.
He refused to change it, because it's what people are "used to" - in
other words, it's "his voice" now.

Anyway, terrrific shot of an icon.

I would try shooting with the lens for a while under normal conditions
and investigate if you see a consistent problem.

Re: Is there a quick and easy test for the 16-50 decentering problem?

2010-04-09 Thread paul stenquist
With the 16-50, what you're looking for is a focus field that is not flat..
A brick wall will work. But shoot off a tripod and make sure the camera is
square to the wall. Expose at f2.8. If the lens has the misalignment problem
that plagued some copies of the 16-50, one edge of the frame will be out of
focus when the other edge is in focus. It's pretty easy to detect. From what
I've heard, the lenses are really way off or not at all. My first copy was
defective, and I noticed it before testing. With a brick wall test, it was
completely obvious.

OT: Epson R2400

2010-04-09 Thread Perry Pellechia
I found two Epson R2400 inkjet printers at my university surplus.
Both are showing a maintenance error (alternate flashing paper and ink
LEDs) that based on my research are caused by full waste ink pads. I
do not know the history of these printers and cannot determine the
current state of the heads. I also expect that all the ink cartridges
will need to be replaced. It would be nice to have a wide carriage
printer but I could never justify the expense before stumbling onto
these machines.

I have found that there is a third party reset utility called Epson
SSC that can clear the error and the waste pad can be replaced without
a trip into Epson service. However, I still am reluctant to spend
close to $100 on ink if the printers are passed their useful lifetime
or the heads are clogged and cannot be cleared. According to info on
the 'net the "full" waste ink fault is triggered by the printer based
on the number of cleaning cycles or the amount of ink run through the
heads. Therefore, these printers probably have been used fairly
heavily to get to this point.

So I have a few questions for those of you that have used this printer
and might have run into this issue. I am also curious what the
opinions on whether it is worth buying ink to test out the printers.
I know that having two units doubles the odds that one can be working
but if these printers are not worth reviving I'd rather save the
money.

I would appreciate any first hand knowledge or advice,

Perry.

When we were having the stacks installed in our house, the plumber had to
walk through our bedroom to the bathroom many times throughout the day.
One time, I heard him burst out laughing, and he told me that when he died,
he wanted to come back as my dogs.

I don't think he cared which one.
They were playing people, lying on the bed with their heads on the pillows,
fast asleep and competely oblivious to the bruahua that was going on around
them.
