It's been a while since we had a good rumour to chew over. This one

My *istD made about 10,000 exposures before we parted our ways. It was
perfectly fine in all respects at that time. My K10D made about 23,000

My *istDS suffers from hang-ups and erratic operation of its controls,
most of all the thumbwheel. The K10D has been doing alright, so far. But
my K-7 has developed the sticky release button problem you're describing
for your K-x, after less than a year. Add to this a number of nagging
firmware probs with the K-7 that have not been corrected over several
releases and the overall picture isn't very favourable. Especially not
since the legendary Pentax service has been outsourced, last year, and
hasn't exactly been a model of customer care since.

Re: Pentax problems

2010-06-03 Thread Anthony Farr
If I had such a run of bad luck I'd be looking for a common influence.
How about a bad SD card that you've used in all the cameras? Do you
download the cards with a card reader or by connecting your cameras to
your computer (possible bad usb ju-ju)? Do you get funky humidity
where you live? How about EMF interference?

I speak from experience. A while ago my little family moved in with
the in-laws while our house was being renovated. Every single piece
of computer gear that I ever plugged in there crapped out in the
following two years, and the computer itself had a power supply unit
fail and replaced while there. My brother-in-law has had well above
the odds of premature failures himself.

I went to JJ's blues last night. There wasn't anyone to dance with, so I
played with the camera. K-x with FA 77.

The light balance at JJ's seems to have been scientifically engineered to
make it impossible to get decent photos, without actually doing anything
at all artistic or creative.

but you may find this link easier to look at
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624167766640/

As usual, it seems that once I threw away all the ones that were total
trash I was left with my choice of a sharp photo, or a good moment.

These were tough because she had come down off the stage, out of the
light, into the crowd and the guy was about two feet from me, which is a
bit close for the 77:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4653730416/in/set-72157624167766640/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4653113687/in/set-72157624167766640/

I didn't have time to bump the ISO, so I just cranked the shutter speed
down "enough" which ended up being 1/8 second.

Despite the blur, I kind of like them.

How sweet, they're fighting over us.

Actually, it seems that Sony is just fighting Pentax and everyone else
besides for their customers. Canon, like a lot of businesses, would
be open to the idea of absorbing any small competitor but Hoya has
already 'mopped up' Pentax. It's always possible that Hoya has got
what it wanted from Pentax and is ready to spit out the husk.

On topic of lenses and enablement, for a change

2010-06-03 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

I'm thinking of two things that I might want to do next with my gear
cabinet.

1. Galia seems to have a liking of shooting small things. I seem to have
a liking of making her use 50 mm lens, to which she does not really
protest. Adding these two, I am thinking of buying a 50 mm macro lens
for her. The alternatives are FA 50/2.8 and DFA 50/2.8. Except price,
weight and build differences - is there any sense to prefer one to
another? I am leaning towards FA variety, but I am open to opinions.

2. Call me a snob, but I want to replace my Tamron 28-75/2.8 with Pentax
FA* 28-70/2.8. A number of issues here. They seem to be on sale on
eekbay for a bit over USD 1k.

Would anyone from USA agree to buy one for me, test it properly and then
send it along? I realize it is a lot of hassle should the specific
sample proves suboptimal, so that feel free to keep your silence. If you
decide to talk - let it be off list.

Another issue is mechanical longevity. Tamron's made is said to be more
towards the consumer grade - plastic and such. What about Pentax? What
are the chances that buying one, I'd end up with pile of mechanical issues?

And finally, if any one from the list want to enable be with any of the
above, I would gladly consider the offer. It is because, obviously,
dealing with PDML is much more reliable and pleasant than eekbay adventures.

Thanks in advance.

Boris

P.S. Immediately or even along with going about FA* 28-70/2.8 I will be
selling my Tamron 28-75/2.8... So you have an opportunity here as well.

The comparison to car driving crossed my mind too. Computers are
becoming tools every bit as ubiquitous as cars. However, most
societies require drivers to prove their skills by obtaining a license
before they can legally drive out of that parking lot. Maybe that
should be introduced for computers as well.

Apart from the genes thing, that's exactly my point. A system
cushioning the users with the impression that everything about the
system is simple and intuitive doesn't help the situation one bit.

Microsoft does try to catch up with Apple at every new OS launch,
though. Marketing dept's are the same everywhere i guess... But the
system most successfully getting the "simple" message across, will
also attract the "simplest" users.

For those who learn how, nothing is difficult. My gripe with this was
that Apple seem to attract the users least likely to be bothered with
just that. Such a trust in any computer system seems quite unhealthy
to me.

Or are there any Mac users here who can stand up and guarantee that a
Mac and a Time Machine will provide adequate backup of all user data
straight out of the box. From reading that famous document, the
manual, I'm not convinced.

Strange as it may seem, there are plenty of people in the world who
would like to use a computer for various tasks - say, accessing the
internet, Skyping distant relatives, writing a letter to the bank - but
who are not the least bit interested in understanding how it works, how
to manage it better, how to improve it, how to accomplish other tasks
with it. In my opinion, the Mac can appeal to this type of person *as
well as* the complete opposite.

I first bought a computer not because I wanted to get 'into computing',
rather because I wanted to achieve something specific: scanning and
printing negatives. I'm not the slightest bit interested in how it
works, as long as it works.

Along the way, I have since learned of other things I can accomplish
using the computer, and these include using a spreadsheet for my
accounts, writing letters, and editing video to name a few. I've learned
how to backup my vital data (like my video files and important letters
and accounts) because if the computer crashes, I still want my important bits.

I built 2 web sites but haven't touched the HTML. Sure they are limited
in scope, but they do what I want them to do.

That fact that Apple (seems to) attracts users least likely to be
bothered with learning 'how' is far from a gripe - it is actually a big
selling point, and indeed was such when the Mac was first launched.

Apologies - time to go soothe the nipple ;)

My comment was not about the quality of the _system_ but an
observation about a sample of its users. This is only a problem for
the system insofar as it does not live up to the user's expectations.
It is generally true that the less knowledge one has, the more
unrealistic one's expectations will be. Partly because expectations
are tempered by marketing lingo. So Apple's toting of their system as
"simple" has set unrealistic expectations with the least competent
users.

Of course it's a good selling point for Apple, and they're hyping it
for all it's worth. In my opinion for more than it's really worth. At
the end of the day there's no substitute for knowing what you're doing
with a computer, regardless of brand.

Surrounded by other photographers you might get away with that, but given
recent events, anything that looks slightly different from a normal camera
might be more problematical in use.

Thanks Paul. :-)

two questions...
I know you're an advanced user... Have you verified, by manual means
or otherwise, that all the data you wish to back up are being
included?

The ultimate purpose of a backup is restore. Do you have any
experience with restoring data from a Time Machine (TM)?

I somewhaty innocently started this thread so I dip in now and then to

PESO: Yosemite

2010-06-03 Thread Jack Davis
Just returned from a brief visit to Yosemite Valley. Spectacular under most any
conditions, this past winter's extra moisture has added even more drama.
This is Upper Yosemite Falls reflected in a vagrant pool of Merced River
overflow along the edge of a meadow. A fortunate discovery.

Comments certainly welcome.

No worries, mate.

Some just found it odd how mr. Butzi blamed Adobe exclusively, when
an Apple upgrade precipitated his problem. From there it branched out
in various facets of Apple/Microsoft/Adobe bashing. It has been mostly
about OS'es, a little bit about DRM, and not at all about photography.

I made a snide remark implying that Apple attract the most
tecnologiacally ignorant users by marketing their system as simpler
than the competition, and have questioned (with examples) whether
Apple can actually deliver enough to take away the need for computer
competance all together. Some arguments have been made to the
contrary, but either way it's not convincing anyone to change their
stance.

Oh, and Joe McAllister has tried to win some branch of argument by
message precision bombing, I think.

All in good fun and religious reverie. :-)

Re: On topic of lenses and enablement, for a change

2010-06-03 Thread Jack Davis
Boris, this Pentax lens is an extremely well made "tank." I enjoyed one for
several years and sold in for a bit over $1,000 USD a couple years ago. I felt
it somewhat heavy and "sides" all this new D glass was out.
I bought the DA* 50~135, did some semi serious comparisons with the FA 28~70
f/2.8 and decided to let it go. I'm sure it's pleasing it's current owner
somewhere.

Ralf

Get some "tuner cleaner", I was looking for a non lubricating, but
couldn't find any so settled on a lubricating variety, solved the
thumbwheel problems with the *ist-Ds. I haven't had problems with the
other controls...

Thanks Paul. :-)

two questions...
I know you're an advanced user... Have you verified, by manual means

The ultimate purpose of a backup is restore. Do you have any
experience with restoring data from a Time Machine (TM)?

Im not really an advanced user in the manner of all the IT people that
populate this list. I learn only what I need to know.
But Time Machine has worked fine for me. I restored my full startup
drive after replacing a noisy unit, and every file and app performed
flawlessly, as near as I could tell. Still running on the restored
system and apps.

I have no idea if Time Machine is a perfect solution, but it works
fine for me. I rely on it to back up the 600 gig startup drive only.
and it writes to a second 500 gig drive. The startup drive is only
about 1/3 full and it pretty much stays at that level. The Time
Machine backup is 90% full, and it stays at that level. I believe it
automatically discards the oldest backups at that point.

I keep my photo files on eight external drives. Two of the largest are
backup only. I transfer critical files to those manually about once a
week or whenever I have important files on hand. The most important
files are on three drives. I also have a set of DVD backups for photo
