PESO -- Duck, Duck, GOOSE?

2010-07-17 Thread P. J. Alling
Well some time ago I posted a shot that I considered something of a
failure. I was watching the scene that I wanted to capture come
together in the viewfinder, when a bystander leaned into the shot,
realized what he had done, and said "Sorry". Well something similar
happened again. But this time the culprit was one of Frank's "Friends".

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20%20duckduckgoose.html

Equipment: Pentax K20D w/smc Pentax FA 28-200 f3.8~5.6.

OK, if it weren't for the title I probably wouldn't have bothered to
post it.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Re: Lenses again

2010-07-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've owned and used all but the A80-200 in that list. The A28/2.8 is
what I'd go for first, the A70-210/4 afterwards.
(I'm not a big zoom user, had that lens and only rarely used it. But
it was a very nice performer.)

The A35-70/4 was only just "OK" far as I'm concerned, the the
80-200/4.7-5.6 too slow.

Glad you're enjoying it. I found it quite intuitive too, right from
the beginning in 2005-2006 when it was still in early beta.

BTW: My new workshop proposal was accepted by the Media Center folks

For the 1) above, - the lack of keyboard was definitely a hindering

I prefer the less tightly cropped version but it probably needs to be
seen as a largish print. On a monitor the figure is still quite small
and undefined unless you view the large version, but then you have to
scroll and can't appreciate the whole image.

Re: More Peso's Plowing demo

2010-07-17 Thread Bob Sullivan
Bob,
Farms in the USA started out under 100 acres.
They were what one family could clear and work with an animal.
As mechanical farm implements became more common, farms grew in size.
>From 1900 to 2000, farm equipment became very efficient.
And on the great plaines, you can farm 1,000+ acres with the right equipment.
As farmers invested in more expensive capital equipment,
they looked to farm more acres to maximize the use of their equipment.
That's why farms are so big in the midwest and western USA.

They probably are all hers. Some of the wood ducks around here will
regularly produce up to a dozen (sometimes more) ducklings. Presumably
quantity allows for the inevitable losses to foxes, hawks, reptiles,

I see what people were saying about Lightroom, at least about Lightroom 3. I
will be proceeding with caution, so's I don't commit any irretrievable errors,

If you calculated the average farm size in the Midwest, the agricultural
breadbasket of the country, my guess is the average size would be considerably
larger. In Central Illinois, where I'm from, 500 acres would be considered
small, and possibly not of sufficient size to provide a decent income to a
family. In this area more and more farming is becoming corporate, and those
"farms" would be MUCH larger.

RE: 2 touch? What do you prefer?

2010-07-17 Thread J.C. O'Connell
by definition zoom lenses hold focus while
zooming. If they don't they arent zooms,
they are varifocal which are rare, not common.
Im sure there are some cheapo zooms that don't
hold focus properly but I would call those
attempted zooms falling to varifocal not
on purpose.

Provided it stays focused. A true zoom should keep focus as you change its
focal length. That can be achieved by some kind(s) of optical/mechanical
compensation for focus shift. On the other hand, a generic varifocal lens is

not required to do that. However, many so-called zooms are varifocals, with
some extent of focus shift throughout their focal length range. One of the
reasons for making 1-touch zooms was allowing/forcing the photographer to
perform the required compensation for the focus shift of the varifocal lens.

For that reason, 1-touch zooms were so much in fashion in the pre-AF era.
With AF cameras, that problem is less important, as focusing is performed
after selecting the focal length.

That doesn't sound very small to me, so I googled it. It's quite small by US
standards, but not by the standards of other parts of the world. Here are
some figures for the EU, from

"EU farms are, on average, considerably smaller than U.S. farms. In 2007,
the average farm size in the EU-15 was 46.2 acres, whereas the average farm
size in the United States was 418 acres. The addition of 12 new member
states with smaller farm sizes than the EU-15 makes U.S. average farm size
more than 12 times that of the average EU-27 farm of 34.1 acres. However,
farm size varies greatly by country, ranging from an average of 171 acres in
the United Kingdom to 7.2 acres in Hungary."

It's very interesting to see people working on these tiny little farms in
Eastern Europe and elsewhere because it's such small scale. Africa and Asia
are even smaller.

RE: 2 touch? What do you prefer?

2010-07-17 Thread J.C. O'Connell
I tend to like 2 touch zooms over 1 touch
because sometimes in zooming a 1 touch you may accidentally
alter the focus when you don't want to.
I like to focus at the longest end of the zoom
range and then adjust the zoom setting for the
composition last.

it means the zoom ring and the focus ring are separate. Some lenses, such as
the 70-210/4, use the same ring for both - to zoom you push/pull like a
trombone, to focus you twist

2010-07-17 Thread Bob W
Spent a very ennjoyable day in Birmingham with Chris today, primarily to see
the Steve McCurry exhibition. We also looked around the art gallery and
museum, and had a stroll along the canalside.

The exhibition is incredibly depressing. What's the point of being a
photographer when someone like McCurry is so damned good? A really good show
that could have been twice as big. Most of his classics are there, although
some of my personal favourites are missing.

I would like to have seen this one:

The museum is terrific. Quite small, but there's some seriously good stuff
in there, including a Velazquez, Picasso, Braque, Vuillard and many more
besides - well worth a visit. There are also some bits and pieces from the
Staffordshire Horde, so fresh they're still caked in mud.

The canal is full of Danes.

Here are some snaps. The first is from Greenwich, but I thought I'd drop it
in here anyway.

I tend to agree. The figures at the top distinguish the picture from the
run-of-the-mill shots of that subject. In addition, cropping them would

HTML 5 obsoleted flash, Apple's riding the bleeding edge like they did

A two-touch lens has a zoom ring and a focus ring where as a 1-touch
lens has push-pull zoom and traditionally the push-pull portion
functions as the focus ring for manual lenses, AF lenses will usually
have a smaller focus ring as part of the push-pull section

Time will tell, but Apple is a technology driver these days so I predict

It's hard to reference them uniquely, as the numbering changes

I also liked the one that Ann pointed out.

The composition is interesting, the rendering shows the limits of
either the lens or sensor, I think. I'm not really sure which.

"Interesting" was exactly what I aimed for, so thanks.

This is actually a scan from slide film (I have some of those lying
around in my fridge...) Maybe it didn't have enough dynamic range, or
perhaps the scan isn't very good, or perhaps it's still the lens. Don't
quite remember which one I used, but it may have been the A70-210.
Unless it was the FA-50/1.4. A polariser was possibly involved, too...

Here is a quick rescan with somewhat different settings. Flatter curve,

GESO - Keeping Close Watch

fauna category, but it's always fun to watch a duck and her ducklings
toodling about a pond:

Actually I wonder if they're all hers: I counted as many as eight
ducklings in one of the frames. Could she have "adopted" some
orphans? Maybe she's babysitting whilst a friend "sleeps on off"?

Yes, she does actually have large feet (fills socks meant for 3-6
month babies), but the boots are actually pretty small. I was using a
14 mm lens, hence the distortion. ;)

have a hard time with the lamp post. It's very heavy and pulls away

The Great Life Photographers--a book recommendation

2010-07-17 Thread Christine Aguila
Having spent the last week reading page by page this lovely 605 page book
published by Thames & Hudson (paperback 2009), I'd like to recommend it to
PDML folks. Organized in alpha order, included is a brief biographical
sketch of 88 photographers who were on Life's staff and, of course, photos
made by the photographer.

So many of the photographers have passed away, which would follow given
Life's run from 1936-1972. The brief sketches do a great job of revealing
the dedication and personality of the photographers, especially in their
coverage of World War II.

I'd like to share this brief biography of George Strock (1911-1977):

" . . . Stroke joined LIFE and went off to the war in the Pacific.
Initially he cabled editors that he saw so little action he was ready to
quit and open a peanut stand. Other photographers did leave, but Strock
stayed on for the Battle of Buna, which cost more than 3,000 Allied lives.
On that malarial New Guinea island, Strock scrambled along side the
soldiers. . . . At the time, censors banned showing any dead American
soldiers, but LIFE raised the point with the government, and FDR himself
decided the public was growing complacent and should see some of the
reality; thus 'Three Dead Americans' ran in LIFE."

I find that last bit about FDR very interesting. Cheers, Christine

Re: iPad

2010-07-17 Thread Igor Roshchin

It's rather interesting that it was this past week that I got my hands
on a demo iPad for about 4 days. My impression was that it looked
and felt cool, but mostly useless.
The latter part was due to 1) difference in the modus operandi
(I don't use web-interface for reading e-mail, rather it is
either shell-based, such as alpine, or Thunderbird)
2) Among the apps installed, there were very few that attracted any portion
of my interest, and I was not installing any new ones.

For the 1) above, - the lack of keyboard was definitely a hindering
factor. I am using a lot of short-keys on the keyboard even to control
web-browser. I was not used to how to do copy-n-paste between apps /browsers.
Lack of possibility to switch between different windows, and lack
of multitasking (I know, there is a hack that allows to enable that -
so that you can listen to built-in iPod while doing something else, but
I was not going to bother.)

The screen is very nice. I also liked gesture-based touch-screen
navigation for certain websites (in particular, google maps).
At this point, I do not see using iPad or any similarly sized pads.
If anything, I may consider a small device like Viliv N5 -
for communication and web browsing:

Re: PESO - In Another World

I like it. It seems busy on the bottom and left side of the frame,
then balanced by the space around her head. Nice.

Thank you all. Seems to be a great variety of responses, for which
I'm grateful. I do live within 3.5 hours of
Jasper and often drive through. :) I'll stop off again some time.

Then, after posting the last, looked at the photo again and went for a much
tighter crop:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4802285668/

The photo in the upper right is O Sensei, the founder of aikido, and the
calligraphy, written by O sensei translates to "True Victory is Self Victory",
which are critical elements to "the place". I think that I prefer the less
tightly cropped version, which lends a bit more spareness, and the feeling of
traditional Japanese austerity.

Re: iPad

2010-07-17 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks for the comment Adam. Both of the uses you mention are ones I'll look
into. I think an iPad will join our household, it is just a question of when
and how many. My wife basically commutes between two homes: our current home in
Missouri and our future home in Michigan where she cares for her elderly
step-mother 4-5 days a week. She carries her laptop back and forth for email
and web browsing, and likes the smaller lighter iPad as an alternative which
would also provide her with an e-book reader. She does fine with the iPhone
virtual keyboard and would have no problem with that aspect of the iPad.

I confess that out of laziness I hadn't uploaded the final version to flickr.
When I went back to print it, I tweaked it slightly, pretty much exactly as you

I hadn't really thought about whether it would be understandable to folks who
