PESO - Curveball

2010-09-02 Thread frank theriault
There's a lot of things I ~don't~ like about this one, but enough good
things that I'm showing it anyway.

;-)

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2010/09/curveball.html

For one thing I had the wrong lens (from my vantagepoint I needed
something shorter than 200mm, so a zoom would have been nice).
Hopefully this weekend there'll be some games and I can spend a good
long time there with a zoom getting more shots.

*istD, M200mm f4.0, Manfrotto monopod.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Re: K7 or Kx

2010-09-02 Thread Steven Desjardins
As much as I enjoy this, I probably should 'fess up. A friend of a
friend had a K7 and kindly let me try it with my own SD card. I tired
exactly what Mis. mentioned, i.e., I took a few correctly exposed
shots at 1600, 3200, and 6400. I was more than satisfied in that I
probably won't try anything worse than that. (I can only imagine what
the Kx can do if this is what people consider unacceptable.) This
being said, I hadn't realized how much the K7 was similar in form
factor to the D/DS with some extra weight. I also tried some
difficult exposure situations and was pleasantly surprised as how god
it was. That is probably more important to me than the really high
iso performance. At least for now. BTW, I think Mis and Boris both
have legitimate points. One big difference is always what the shooter
considers acceptable, and, as they say, there is no dispute in matters
of taste.

My K7 will arrive today. Thanks for all the advice folks. I am giddy
in anticipation.

Re: PESO - Curveball

2010-09-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I think it is a fine image, Frank. I like the dof, the position of
the ball, the expression on the pitcher's face, and the posture of the
fielder to the left of the pitcher. The fielder or runner behind the
pitcher is a bit distracting, but we work in an imperfect world and
must take it as it is. I think this image does a great job of
portraying the scene and the action.

Tamron's lenses to be auto corrected in Adobe CS5 and LR3

2010-09-02 Thread Miserere
Good to hear that Tamron are releasing those secret numbers to Adobe
so automatic distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting
correction will be applied to all Tammy lenses. If I remember
correctly, none of the big brands turned over their profiles, correct?
I imagine this would be a golden opportunity for all the third party
vendors to collaborate with Adobe and use this as a marketing tool:

"Buy Tamsigmina lenses, not only are we cheaper than the OEM
equivalents, we also don't seem so crap once all our imperfections are
automatically fixed in Photoshop and Lightroom!"

Note: For those without a sense of humour, let me explain that I don't
hate thrird party lenses. In fact, some of my best friends are third
party lenses.

The spider is the best; such great light. And I commend you for not
turning the saturation knob to 11 (or 111%, as the case may be).

As far as composition and story-telling go, the fly is my favourite. I
love wide open, empty(ish) frames. And the title is spot on, I fully
expect to see the fly jump off, do a double backwards flip and dive
into the pond.

Which Metz flash did you use?

Re: Lightroom v3.2 and Camera Raw v6.2 are released

2010-09-02 Thread John Sessoms

From: Godfrey DiGiorgi

You should convince her to set the "Camera Raw Cache Settings" to the
default location. A cache size of 1 to 4 Gbytes is about right for
most users. In Lightroom 3.2, this setting is in the Lightroom
Preferences dialog, "File Handling" tab panel.

Without being specific, because I didn't know exactly what was causing
it, I'd already suggested pretty much that ... whatever was creating the
cache files was set to desktop when it should be set to a folder.

But it seems like one of those things where she'd rather bitch about it
than listen to anything an old man might suggest. I've offered my idea
and she can do what she wants. I'm going to let it go.

Thanks. I used the Metz 15MS-1 on the spider. You can attach it on the
DA35 but the lens is to fragile to support the flash. I hold the flash
in my left hand somewhere around the lens which makes flash possible
at 1:1 on the DA35

I think the tight composition actually works in your favour, so 200mm
was fine. The ball is placed perfectly in the frame, and at an
unbelievable angle to show the stitches, so I call Photoshop! (Yes
Frank, I know you didn't.) But while on the subject of Photoshop, if
you were unscrupulous, you would clone out the kid behind the pitcher,
which I imagine is one of the things you don't like about this image.
Despite that, I think the DoF is small enough that the picture still
works as is, and I like it a lot.

Cheers,

Re: K7 or Kx

2010-09-02 Thread John Sessoms

From: Miserere

2) The K10D IS NOT RUBBISH at ISO 1600! People say all the time that
the K10D is bad in low light, but never explain what this means. If by
"low light" you mean "not enough light to achieve correct exposure",
then yes, the K10D falls short when you underexpose and then try to
recover an underexposed image. However, if by "low light" you mean
"light so low that you need to use ISO 1600 for correct exposure",
then no, the K10D is not bad. When proper exposure is achieved, the
K10D works very well at ISO 1600:

I've seen many shitty ISO 1600 shots from K10D's, and invariably they
were shot by someone who didn't know how to shoot the K10D at high
ISO, meaning they underexposed their images and then increased the
exposure in postprocessing. High ISO shooting is a whole 'nother game,
and I suspect it's different for each camera, but there's certainly a
learning curve that most photographers don't crawl up before
announcing to the World that a particular camera is bad at high ISO.

I think it depends on the example of K10D you have. I did not find ISO
1600 usable in very low light on my own K10D.

ANY camera at ANY ISO will give piss poor results if you try to recover
an under-exposed image in post processing.

My experience is you can MAYBE rescue 1/3 - 2/3 stop if you're really,
really good at post processing and just don't have any choice ... but I
don't rely on it.

I prefer to get exposure right in the camera. And when I did so at ISO
1600, my K10D just gave me unsatisfactory performance.

I was disappointed to see that v3.2 has profiles for most Pentax lenses but NOT
the original 18-55 kit lens. At least, it's unable to detect that as the lens
used in shots I made with it. Or could it be the combination of K-7 and
"original kit lens" which gets LR confused?

Charles, LR 3.2 only has profiles for Pentax 534 FA/DFA lenses.
No other Pentax lens profiles are bundled AFAIR.

That's a whole 'nother can of worms, Rick. And yes, the banding could

I've experimented with the cache size on my system further. For my

Googled "Vertical Pattern Noise Pentax K10D" and lo & behold ... yeah,
that's what I saw that made ISO 1600 un-usable on mine.

It was even there at ISO 800, but not so much. Never a problem at ISO
400 and below.

So, is there any special post processing noise reduction trick that can
overcome this? Maybe I could make the high ISO usable if I could remove
the noise.

G'night Johnboy!

Great gallery from Walton's Mountain this month. The stand-out shots for me
are by Carl Gjersem, Dag, annsan and Pete McIntosh.

The 'recognised who did it without even looking' award goes to Frank!

Here's my non-Pentax contribution, taken in Liskeard, Cornwall last month
(my bike):

The interesting question arising from the one by Pete is 'how does one turn
right or left?'. Today I found myself in one of those horrible separated
cycle lanes in London and it was practically impossible to do the right turn
(left to most people!) I wanted.

The gallery is very timely - I cycled to & from work today for the first
time in my new job. I haven't bike-commuted into the centre of London since
1998. It's amazing how it's changed. Back then there were relatively few
people doing it; today it was incredible, like joining a swarm. There are
some very competitive people out there, and the pace is incredible. Very
enjoyable though, and 50% faster (including shower) than the fastest public
transport I've tried. And over £2,000 per year cheaper.

I decided to stick my son's Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 135/3.5 on the K-X.
Hand-held. ISO 200, Av mode. jpg file format.
Metering is in averaging mode, so with the sky and brees
I had to over-expose about 1 1/3 stops, iirc.
Nice color saturation. Better than the K100D.

It seems to me like AF doesn't pick something to follow but will just
randomly focus on the highest contrast item closest to any given focus
point with a slight preference for the more central ones. This usually
doesn't mean faces etc. I have many perfectly focused shots of hand
rails and seat backs...

Neither the Tamron nor the Sigma 18-200's are worth bothering with. If
you're going to replace the Pentax 18-250, get the Tamron 18-250, it's

Looks fine to me, Dave! Those Boston redtails are pretty tame; I once
came upon one that had landed on a traffic light and I was able to
photograph it for 15 minutes, until I got bored and walked off (I was
on my way to work, after all). Sadly, it was an overcast day so the
photos are of a hawk looking bored on a traffic light with a white sky
in the background. I would've killed for it to be on a tree! :-)

I was once walking through Harvard Yard and there was a hawk on the
ground in a standoff with a squirrel...and I didn't have a camera.

Then there was the time a hawk had an injured squirrel at its mercy
and I only had my crappy BlackBerry camera...

http://enticingthelight.com/2009/06/24/bird-photography-with-a-camera-phone/

I think redtail hawks are just big photographer teasers.

I like Pete's too - the just slightly off centre composition works
really well.

Other favs:
The Old Motorcycle by George K. Vlachou
Gear change by Patrick Temmerman
Night Truck by Rick Womer

And I got a laugh out of Ann's 'Not So Busy'

But, overall 'Granddaughter and grandfather' by Carl Gjersem is my pick.
 Wonderful composition.

Which Hancock? I see two of them. And a Prudential. At varying times in
my youth and early adulthood each of them was the tallest building in
Beantown. Then again, the newer Hancock was known as the Plywood Ranch when
its windows were falling out.

My memories of the K10D are a bit foggy. I don't remember it in detail, but
apparently it was at least okay. I do recall that I found it to be an upgrade
from the *istD. I do believe that I used manual focus far more often than I now
do with the K7. It's all about adapting to the equipment you're using.

Re: I hate my K10D's AF

2010-09-02 Thread John Celio
You don't understand. My camera backfocuses like it was *meant* to do that,
even after sending it back to Pentax twice (both times for other problems,
but I asked them to fix this, too). The image will look sharp in the
viewfinder, but when looking at the photo on my computer later it becomes
apparent that, even though the focus locked on a particular subject (say, a
person standing six feet from me), the sharpest part of the photo is just
behind them. Something is misaligned, and Pentax/CRIS hasn't bothered to
fix it, even though their repair papers said they did.

When I'm focusing manually, I will sometimes take a few extra photos with
what I see in the viewfinder slightly out of focus, hoping I'll find the
sweet spot somewhere.

I swear, if I didn't have so much Pentax junk here, I'd go buy a Nikon.
