Re: K-r is official (video)
I don't remember anybody predicting 6fps for the K-r! That makes me optimistic that the K-5 will offer a noticeable framw rate improvement over the K-7; it would be a little embarassing if a contemporary lower-spec body outperformed the high-end model. That also leads me to believe that we will see wireless image transfer on the K-5 as well. Re: Also official - DA L 35mm f2.4
I'm profoundly ambivalent on the new 35. The competition has amanged to produce equivalents which are both faster (f1.8) and cheaper ($200 MSRP) and while the new 35 is smaller than the Nikon or Sony versions, it's not significantly so. I was expecting a much smaller lens when I heard the f2.4 spec. K-x with an extra stop of ISO, 1.3 extra fps, a deeper buffer, better LCD, LiIon battery and unspecified AF changes (Only known difference is a different point layout). Biggest disappointment is no wired release and no upgrade to the metering (K-x's real weakpoint is the old 16-segment meter). It comes in over the K-x in the line and the K-x will stay for now. -Adam On Thu, Sep 9, 2010 at 7:34 AM, paul stenquist wrote: > How do the specs compare to the Kx? I don't disagree with you if the photographer is aware of an obvious and specific problem. Why have two or three people point that out instead of commenting on the other aspects of the image? In this case, however, and in two or three other recent posts, there was no obvious (or even hidden) flaw; Charles was just being overly modest. I think that can have an effect on what we expect to see, and may unjustly color what others think and say about the image. I think a poster will get better and more unbiased comments without a generalized statement about possible flaws in the photo. Remember, one man's flaw is another man's enhancement. I kinda made this decision. The K-7 will last because I need to buy lenses not bodies. This is a body better than any film camera I ever owned with at least as much capability. Americans can only have it in three colors (with black rubber. Heck I'd expect at least a whitewall option). The new 35mm, (normal), is also available in colors. Anyone else notice that it's not a pancake and as well as not being particularly fast? I don't see it cutting into the aftermarket for the "fast" FA and A 35mm lenses. This is a big load off my mind and makes life quite a lot easier. I nearly had a breakdown yesterday after an aftershock came through while I was trying to work. The tremors themselves aren't so much of a problem but it's being exacerbated by the lack of sleep. I know the building can withstand them easily. The initial jolt of each tremor is quite strong due to its proximity and it gives you a bit of a fright, and these really add up when you're tired and it really starts to get frustrating. There's usually a deep rumble just before they arrive but you don't know how big it's going to be. The papers are reporting that a number of people have left the city to get a break from them. One person sent her kids up to Wellington to stay with their grandparents. My boss's attitude has not helped matters, expecting us to work from home and "we'd appreciate it if you could give 100% effort" (translation: we expect 100%). We haven't been to visit any family members yet. Of the three "productive" staff members in our company, one took yesterday off and the other lasted until mid-morning (he's also worried about flooding due to high river levels in his area). I ended up taking a couple of hours time-out after that aftershock, grabbed a camera and took some photos in the garden to try and calm down. I might post a peso later but I won't be able to do much processing as my Photoshop machine had to be taken down for my work machine. I'm doing my best to take a relaxed approach to work, normally we're pushed fairly hard but I'm using my isolation to ignore it and look after myself. If the boss whinges he'll get an earful. I'd be far better able to cope if I was out doing something to help others but I'm having to sit inside at a desk all day, with no human contact. My partner Janet is handling things a lot better than I am, she's sleeping quite well and she's been at work all week. But she's able to go to the office and she tends to be out and about quite a lot. Without her around I'd have gone crazy. After yesterday's troubles I actually managed quite a good night's sleep. I helped things along by sipping a shot of Galliano during the evening. Woke up at some point and struggled to get back to sleep but I'm feeling fresher now than I have since last Thursday. I'll see what other medicine I can find tonight, maybe some neat bourbon or scotch :) The central city is still cordoned but I'll go in there tomorrow anyway and see what I can find outside the limits. Still a little bit worried about my bike which is still at work. For all I know it could have been damaged or looted. An expert on the radio this morning tells us the aftershocks won't necessarily decrease in magnitude, only frequency. He says we can still get a magnitude 6 sometime in the next few weeks (thanks mate, ignorance is bliss!). Maybe I'll just hold off save up for the K-5 and keep the K-x as backup. Now that the bodies have gone digital, for the next few years we're on the same treadmill that the personal computer industry was on for the first few years: as soon as you actually buy something, it's "obsoleted" by a new product introduction. This will continue until the technology matures a bit. So, like with computers then, you just have to pick a good price-capability point, drive a stake in the sand, and quit looking at the new product introductions for a while. :-) The good part is that once the new product is available the old is deeply discounted. I've paid about $600 for both the *ist-D and the K20D. I expect that I'll pay no more for the K-5 when I finally buy one, about a year from now. Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?
Hi all, So, here's my situation. I ran into an old high school friend who's coaching several athletic teams. He's seen some of my photography and asked if I'd be interested in doing some team photos for them -- soccer and basketball. I told him I'd be interested in doing it, but I've never done that sort of thing before. He essentially said the main thing the kids' parents are concerned about is pricing, and feels pretty confident that I'm competent enough to handle the task based on what he's seen. Thing is, given my lack of experience, I'm not sure how much to charge these parents. I can go through Walmart for the prints, which seem to be pretty reasonably priced -- the standard sports package being $15.00. I don't know if any of you have any experience in this type of work at all, but any guidance would be much appreciated. I've never done any sort of professional work at all, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how much I can fairly charge these people for my work. But, I'd like to be able to make a buck or two someday, if only to subsidize my photography addiction. Are there any rules of thumb or standard formulas that I could go by, aside from asking other local photographers what they're charging? Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me. Back from the playa
I'm back from burning man and am just starting to go through my pictures. Photography there has some interesting challenges. First of all there is the weather and dust. It was windy enough that I didn't want to take my primes out for the most part. As a matter of fact, most afternoons I didn't even take my Pentaxes out. I brought my Argus C-3 to shoot a few rolls just for fun, and ended up doing most of my daytime photography with it. The rolls are being processed and scanned at Bay right now. Another interesting challenge is that there are a tremendous number of opportunities to get good shots, but it's a lot harder to get good shots that are unique. My goal was to try to not take the merely good, and only go for excellent shots, but I'm afraid that my self control wasn't entirely up to that task. There is the temptation to try to show what it's like with photos, but describing it to someone who hasn't been there is truly impossible, there's no way of understanding what it is like without experiencing it. It was very interesting shooting with the Argus. Yes, I could have used the K1000 I brought, but WTF if you're going retro, might as well do it all the way. The rhythm of shooting with the C3 was so different. 1) Use a hand held meter, or guess at the exposure. 2) Set the exposure 3) Stand where you think you need to be. 4) Focus 5) Compose If composition isn't right, go to 3. 6) Cock the shutter 7) Take the picture 8) Advance the film Also with the greater latitude in exposure, and the much higher cost per frame, I didn't shoot nearly as many frames. There were a few shots that I'd bracket, or retake because I realized I had forgotten to focus, or something, but for the most part, it was one or two frames per shot, rather than trying to dial it in with chimping. I mostly shot with the 18-250 on the K-x. Looking at my shots, I really should have used my monopod more, I lost a lot due to camera motion. There's a big difference between hand holding 20-77mm and hand holding at 250. I'll be posting the better ones on flickr later, I started out with this set last night on facebook because it is of a couple of friends of mine playing music at Center Camp. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=280402&id=653299672&l=0261e02f76 -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?
From: Walter Gilbert Hi all, So, here's my situation. According to my Portrait instructor at school, your prices should be between 4 and 7 times your cost. Figure your time at whatever rate you want to pay yourself. Say there are 20 team members and you spend 2 hours shooting. At $50 an hour that's a hundred bucks. Split 20 ways, that's $5 per team member. Package from Walmart is $15, so your cost per package is $20. Your price should be between $80 and $140 per package. Go higher or lower based on what you think is fair market value. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Semi-OT: Advice for a beginner?
Walter, First, a disclaimer. I don't think my opinion would be a representative one on this matter either from a typical photographer's point of view, or from the potential clients': I don't fit the typical profile. So, take it with a grain of salt. What to charge - is a hard question. In any case, - read this: http://www.danheller.com/biz-prints.html#5 It may or may not be directly applicable to your case, but very reasonable arguments are listed there. I think that Walmart "sports pacakge" (3 8x10", 4 5x7', 2 4x6" and 8 wallet prints) is a marketing ploy. I wouldn't see what's special about such a set, and why would one want it. Personally, I'd rather offer photos priced "a la carte", with discounts for multiple (mix and match) photos from the same client/order You can choose between two models (typical for event photographers for this sort of public events): 1. "Cheap and dirty" or 2. "Great but more expensive" or some sort of combination between the two. (From your description, I suspect your clients will gravitate to the former one, but you need some flavor of the latter to attract the attention) Here is what I mean: 1. Once you shoot all your photos, you don't do much of selection (I still would remove obvious misses.), upload them to the website, and let the clients choose and order. Then you adjust the chosen photos before sending them to the printer (photo lab) 2. You do careful selection and adjustment of your shots (can be a big drag in case of 1000+ photos). Then you post the resulting photos to the web for the clients to choose and order. Practically (depending on demand and number of images), - you might to do a hybrid between the two: develop just a bunch of selected photos - to show a representative gallery, but then dump all photos with just a minimum selection (as in 1.), clearly indicating that they are yet undeveloped. This would save a lot of time and energy, especially in case of small number of sales. If you are using LR, you might consider this plugin: http://lr.theturninggate.net/html-galleries/ttg-client-response-gallery/ (or something similar from the same site) that will help in the ordering process. One of those templates can even be coupled with an online direct-printing services. I didn't find it useful for myself - you really need a constant flow of customers to justify using that printing service (Fotomoto or FoxyCart).
