Joe, I agree with most of what you said. I do tend to think that I care
about FF but otherwise, I am getting progressively disillusioned about
the practical improvements in image taking and resulting image quality
that new bodies may/will provide on top of the current ones /for my
particular style and-or level of shooting/.

As a matter of fact, my K-7 is approaching the 10,000 shutter actuations

now that for most part it is going to be in lines with your "mild rant".

Without knowing zilch about studio lighting I can only suggest that you
compare the price of replacement bulbs and the longevity of them for
both outfits. Given that you're starting on this route, you may want to
start with something that is cheaper to maintain in order to get you

Without knowing zilch about studio lighting I can only suggest that you
compare the price of replacement bulbs and the longevity of them for both
outfits. Given that you're starting on this route, you may want to start
with something that is cheaper to maintain in order to get you through the
learning curve. Afterwards you can reconsider.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. Most every studio photographer I know,
whether they are pro or interested amateur has gone through a similar
equipment list, starting with hot lights in reflectors, moving to shoe mount
flashes that have been Rube Goldberged into working, and from there to some
sort of studio flash system.
I figure buy what you are going to end up with anyway right off the get go
and learn how to use it.

I agree. With hot lights you'll only learn that you should have
purchased a studio flash system. And since the technique differs, some
of the skills learned with hot lights don't transfer.

Yup, this is what we do in school too, but not necessarily to punish
the freshmen but to help them visualize their photos. Which is
ultimately the advantage of continuous lighting; pure strobes (i.e.,
flash) does not give you that unless it has a modeling light--which
the Falconeyes provide (which I have experience with).

Re: monitor shopping

Christine,
Choice of the NEC models should hinge on the intended use. DisplayPort
is the new thing and some video card manufacturers support it and its use of
10-bit color vs. 8-bit color with the other interfaces. To future-proof your
decision, the NEC PA series with colorimeter and software would be a costly
but worthwhile decision.

Hi all,

I've decided to quit hunching over my laptop & get a real monitor, to
be properly calibrated, just like all the cool kids have. Not only
are my back & eyes killing me, but I think I would stand a better
chance of getting some images out of my hard drive and onto paper if I
could get a reliable handle on the color management thing.

I've done some research, and though I still feel a bit out of my depth
on this topic, my initial inclination is toward a NEC P221W
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=602072&is=REG&si=rev#anchorToReadReviews

The price is right, and it comes well-recommended. Anyone care to
disabuse me of this notion? What am I missing by not going with a
$1000+ model, like a higher-end NEC, or Apple Cinema display, or Dell
Ultra Sharp...? Are there others I should consider? (I think we can
safely leave Eizo out of the discussion for now...)

I'd also welcome any suggestions for other resources (online or in
print) to educate myself better on the whole topic.

Thanks in advance,

ps: thank you to Fernando for raising the calibration question in a

2010-10-03 Thread Steven Desjardins
I got the K7 because it was much cheaper on the downward side of it
"production life". I like it fine. As time has gone by, I find
myself giving a chunk of my fun money to Harley-Davidson, so the
camera money I have will go to lenses. Especially since i have now
decided to keep a DSLR and an EVIL system. FF doesn't phase me at all
(although all of my remaining lenses are M or FA) probably because I'm
not a big wide angle guy.

Interesting question about Pentax "fixing" its problems under
warranty. I do not have sufficient business experience to say for
sure, but it would not surprise me if this were no longer a viable
business model. Companies need to release frequently to survive,
which affects extended testing and QC as the parts change a lot. As
honest and fair-minded as warranty fixes of obvious problems would be,
Companies that do so may simply go out of business, just leaving the
ones that don't.

Learning Lightroom

2010-10-03 Thread Eric Weir

The Kelbytrainging.com online courses and book have been recommended to me
previously. I've been putting off getting started with Lightroom till I've
gotten at least a bit of an education, especially about importing and
organizing. And I'm putting off doing much shooting until I've done that. Not a
good way to learn photography.

So, if you needed to be frugal, and to chose one or the other, which would you
chose, the online courses or the book and CD? Or are both advised?

Re: About Studio Lighting kinds

2010-10-03 Thread Cotty
One thing nobody has mentioned - if you want to shoot video with your
camera and you only have strobes, you're stuffed. Having said that,
those interfit lights are crap - don't waste your money. If stills is
what you shoot, then flash is what you need as everyone else has pointed out.

That said, a lot of people seem to think that incandescent lamps are the
arch enemy of the studio, creating heat and misery. I have to say this
is far from the truth. If you do need continuous lighting - as I do
constantly - then select very carefully the type of light and the
manufacturer. Simple bulb holders surrounded by a tin dish affair off
little control and create maximum heat - just what you don't want.

All my lights are Arri and good quality and excellent control. I have 2
open-faced 800w redheads, a 650w fresnel:

and a couple of smaller pups (or 'kickers')- small 300w open-faced. They
all have barn doors attached for maximum control, they all spot of
flood, the fresnel lamp especially good for this. I have coloured gels
and diffusers that attach to the doors with simple bulldog clips,
including 4400k (half-blue) and 5600k (full blue) gels to bring the
3200k neat light up to daylight. They're all used in conjunction with
RCDs and still going strong after ten years use, at least 3 times a
week. Sure you pay for it, but if you use lighting to make a living, it
must be reliable - otherwise you waste money in the long run. I would
imagine the same is true with flash.

There's a lot of old wives tales about tungsten lighting - don't let
people put you off, but don't buy interfit for god's sake!

My understanding, Steve, is that when you buy a piece of gear from a
company, say, Pentax, the text on the warranty card and the proof of
purchase together make it a legal contract between you and Pentax. It is
therefore Pentax obligation under law to provide you with proper
service. You might not be able to sue them to submission, but at least
formally you're entitled to proper service as far as the written
conditions thereof go. However I may be wrong.

Re: Learning Lightroom

2010-10-03 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
First off, you shouldn't put off making photos because you're not
ready to process them yet. Shooting is a different skill from
processing. I often don't process what I'm shooting for a long long
time!

Secondly, I find amongst my students that Lightroom is best learned
from watching how others operate it, either in person or using video
tutorials. Adobe offers, free of charge, a large number of good
tutorials directly from their website. Download and install LR, go to
the video tutorials and learn the basics. It's not hard. The more you
do, the more you try with it, the faster you learn.

Yes, you'll make mistakes. You'll want to reorganize things. Nothing
prevents you from fixing stuff, from re-organizing your work later.

Delaying getting started only delays learning.

2010-10-03 Thread Steven Desjardins
As you say, a warranty is a legal contract. You can get from it what
you can under the law. For example, many buildings come with
warranties of 25 years or so. In practice, these warranties are only
good for the most major of problems since you inevitably have to sue
the builder to enforce the warranty. "Legal" is what you can
practically get out of it. The production of every item these days
has factored in the cost of legal issues. If Pentax or any company
can get away with something, it will. This may be cynical but I
trouble putting "corporate" and "ethical" together anymore and I deal
with them accordingly.

Thanks, Godfrey. Didn't know about the Adobe tutorials. I'll check them out.

A couple questions regarding the above -- answers probably obvious, but not
knowing gives me pause: If I import junk, e.g., if I simply import everything
from my card all at once into one folder, can I delete the junk without gumming
up Lightroom's record keeping. Two, can I break such a global import down into
categories after importing? I'm asking about the original images, not edited

Unfortunately this is the case. Among other things, the end user has to

Actually I'm being bit cavalier - Interfit as a brand is fine as long as
you understand that it is a budget range. If I had to buy a light to
once or twice a year, Interfit would be a good choice. If I had to buy a
light to use once or twice a day, Interfit would be a bad choice (IMO!)
although there are probably plenty of Interfit lighting users out there
who are quite happy with their lot. That's because they haven't used
anything better!

I think it's the design I'm slating more than the brand - with
continuous lighting, it's all about design and control. If you put a
large metal dish in front of a bulb, guess what - it's going to radiate
heat, lots of it. If you design a way to control the light but take the
heat elsewhere rather than beam it at the subject, then that's got to be
a Good Thing (tm).

HTH

bon chance!

My understanding, Steve, is that when you buy a piece of gear from a
company, say, Pentax, the text on the warranty card and the proof of
purchase together make it a legal contract between you and Pentax. It
is therefore Pentax obligation under law to provide you with proper
service. You might not be able to sue them to submission, but at least
formally you're entitled to proper service as far as the written
conditions thereof go. However I may be wrong.

Boris

The discussion seems to have become about Pentax, or any other
manufacturer for that matter, unilaterally extending warranty on product
with a /very/ large number of defective samples. The contract on the
card is no longer in question. Pentax has been honoring that. It's
really become a question of how much is the customers good will worth.
I'd really like to get a DA 17-70mm. But from all accounts that
particular lens is poorly designed from a manual focusing standpoint,
making reliable auto focus a must. The SDM controversy just becomes
one more reason for my money to stay in my pocket.

I really don't have an answer to that. Who would enforce it. When
you're dealing with a Government, it will be a matter health, safety and
cost, and the company's defense will be one of statistics.

If people are dying and the perception is that the company simply
doesn't care, there is no defense that can be reasonably raised, no
matter what the actual facts.

If it just puts a bunch of /apparently/ well heeled geeks out of sorts
and costs them a little more of their /probably ill gotten/ loot, and
the company is making a reasonable effort within the existing framework,
then the geeks can go pound sand.
Unfortunately for Bill, (and in a way the rest of us), that's almost
exactly the situation.

Now that might be costing Pentax a lot of good will, but they may have
statistics, that show their failure rate to be within the norm, even
compared to Canon, Nikon, and Sigma, and they will stick to their position.

Don't overlook televisions. I have a HP LP2475w 24" 1920 x 1200 IPS

computers. The HP cost me about US$ 600 a year or so ago. They've
since replaced it with another model (I can't remember what it is)
that's about US$ 400 shipped. They're excellent monitors with good
gamut. /Much/ better than the TFT monitors for photo work.

Then a few months ago I "inherited" a home theater PC that a friend was
trying to build and having trouble with. I got it working and hooked it
up to my main A/V system. It's driving a run-of-the-mill 40" LCD TV and
the colors are *awesome*. The blacks, for example, are far deeper than
even on the HP, and the overall gamut seems to be larger. That said, I
haven't calibrated it yet.

But, take a look at some of the LCD TVs before settling on a $1000
monitor. If my TV is any guide, you can get great performance for
photos at much lower price points in TVs than in computer monitors.

Thanks for the encouragement, P.J. I'll try to keep that in mind the

it'd make an interesting shot. ;^)

Re: monitor shopping

2010-10-03 Thread Christine Nielsen
Ah, very interesting, Doug!

It so happens my husband has a tv set-up as his monitor. He bought a
Toshiba 32RV525RZ last year -- he likes the wide screen for his work.
It's an LCD panel... though I haven't been able to figure out exactly
which type. Only a year old, but already discontinued... the new 40"
model appears to have an S-PVA panel...

I had dismissed his tv/monitor out of hand, as just a dumb television,
good enough for bit-twiddling, but not for my -ahem - art. ;) Now,
I'm having a second look... Thanks for the suggestion.

Don't overlook televisions. I have a HP LP2475w 24" 1920 x 1200 IPS
monitor for photo work and a couple of TFTs for regular work on my
computers. The HP cost me about US$ 600 a year or so ago. They've since
replaced it with another model (I can't remember what it is) that's
about US$ 400 shipped. They're excellent monitors with good gamut.
/Much/ better than the TFT monitors for photo work.

just a note to keep the terminology on course -- your IPS monitor is a
TFT also, you are probably meaning to distinguish your two lower-end TN_
panels from your higher-end IPS panel

Then a few months ago I "inherited" a home theater PC that a friend was
trying to build and having trouble with. I got it working and hooked it
up to my main A/V system. It's driving a run-of-the-mill 40" LCD TV and
the colors are *awesome*. The blacks, for example, are far deeper than
even on the HP, and the overall gamut seems to be larger. That said, I
haven't calibrated it yet.

TVs are generally TN panels because TN is faster (more suitable for
moving images) and cheaper; if you are on-center and fairly distant from
a 40" panel, then the side-to-side variation in color won't have a big
impact on your viewing, but if several people are watching, or if you
are close (so you view the edges at a much different angle from the
center) then TN's angle-of-view limitations will impact you

beyond that i don't feel i know enough to express more than caution
about the gamut and the default settings of the TV; here is an
fascinating article that i haven't yet had the patience to fully digest;
among other things, though, it focuses on sRGB since it is essentially
the gamut video is made for, where many photographers (and their
software) are using wider gamuts:

desaturated the colors in the original. I'll see if I can get rid of some

Hi Team,

Did anything ever happen re: publishing the profiles that were used for

the

photogs who's works were hung in the Dank Haus Gallery? I'd love to see
them as it's something that I have to do and I really haven't a clue
where

to

start without sounding like a tosser ;-)

Rob, this is the PDML. We all sound like tossers.

This would have been aesthetically more pleasing as a square crop. But the lady
with the baby on her chest is selling bread in a booth at a farmer's market, so
i decided to leave a hint of her work environment in the foreground. She smiles
through it all, btw. Amazing.

Thanks Michel. They look very interesting to me. I'm not thinking to compete
on those items, but I'm very glad to see them and, as opposed to the
immediate feeling developed here, I'm rather positive on the authenticity of
those cameras, for a number of reasons including this one:

She smiles until she gets home, dumps the baby in the crib, and kicks the cat
across the room, anyway...

Very nice shot. The lighting is great--and the personalities of both the
infant and the woman (at that moment, anyway!) come through nicely.
