Thanks for posting those - very enjoyable, particularly as I'm not
likely to see any of those places in real life. It seems a bit silly to
name favourites, but that church at Pilcher looks like a photographer's
delight. And the Steel Creek reflections set is suberb.

I spent a day with Jim Hall at his own Rattlesnake Raceway near Midland in the
early eighties. Won't ever forget that. The Midland BBQ brisket was great as
well. However, the Midland Odessa area has little charm beyond that.

I enjoyed those Walt - and thanks for the story about Pilcher. Old

Nice to know that Gloria loved Tom for at least 16 days back in 1998.
Wonder how that turned out?

Re: Peso: Sunny day in Boston

2010-11-15 Thread Steven Desjardins
My original reference was, of course, to the fact that the Texas
Rangers were playing the Yankees for the AL Pennant. As a Red Sox
fan, they de facto became my second favorite team.

However, I did live in Austin for a few years and really enjoyed my
time there. As a politically moderate New Englander, I can hardly be
accused of finding my ideal homeland in Texas. I liked Austin,
however, and would have stayed had I not been an academic and at the
whim of the job market. When you live in Texas for a while, the
people begin to grow on you. For all their braggadocios image, most
Texans I knew were friendly folks that knew how to have a good time.
I can see where that might be hard to find on a visit. Even now, I
wouldn't mind moving back to Texas if the my life took me that way
(and I wasn't so settled in SW Virginia).

Re: Photos of trips with Walter (Brian Walters)

2010-11-15 Thread Theodore Beilby
Thank you Brian for your very kind comment on my Steel Creek Reflections
series.
I was very excited when I brought them up in Lightroom. Your comment means a
lot
to me because I really like what I have seen of your work. I don't often post
comments since I get the digest and usually, there are many comments saying the
same things I would say by the time I get to a link. I was really impressed
with
your shot Storm Front in the last PDML book.

This was a redo on the Church shot, and I think that the 40mm Limited did
justice to it this time. Lighting was hit and miss with showers coming through
every so often. Walter and I had the town to ourselves and spent several hours
driving the streets and stopping when something caught our interest.

Thanks again

Ted

Rochester Report

2010-11-15 Thread Mark Roberts
Got back from Rochester around 11:00 last night. The workshop was an
amazing experience and an incredible value. We didn't just get to do
hands-on platinum printing, we got to examine many original platinum
prints from the museum's archives. The real stuff: Emerson (an
original print of "Picking the Reed", one of my favorites), Coburn,
Steichen. Amazing. The archivist came in on Saturday , when he's
usually off, just to bring out stuff for us.

The museum has two basement levels where all the research,
restoration, etc. etc. is done and the facilities are pretty amazing,
as is the knowledge of the staff. The workshop was taught by Ron Cowie
(who, it turns out, lives in Rhode Island and teaches one day a week
at the new England School of Photography - a few blocks down the
street from where I now live!) and a guy named mark Osterman from the
Eastman House helped with the lab and all the chemistry: Osterman has
apparently done every kind of photographic process there is and
teaches Daguerreotype-making and such. He knows... pretty much
everything about photo chemistry and we got to try anything we could
think of. Wan to finish your platinum print with a gum wash? Fine.
Asphalt wash? Can do. How about two-stage development in a glycerine
starting with ammonium citrate? Sure.

The area I'm interested in, making large negatives from digital for
platinum printing, wasn't covered specifically but they referred me to
good sources for more information and it seems most of the people
working in platinum are moving that direction - not that they all
*want* to, but I learned that the future of film is even more grim
than I'd thought so everyone's preparing to have to work with digital
processes whether they want to or not.

I made a few platinum prints from 8 x 10 negatives and watched a lot
of the other participants try lots of different experiments. I learned
a *lot* and brought home the official workshop package with a binder
of material that'll keep me reading for weeks.

This workshop as a tremendous bargain for $450.00.

   Thanks, Brian.

As I posted in my photo blog, Picher was immensely fascinating for me.
I think I could have stayed there shooting for an entire week and never
run out of shots to take. I wondered what became of Gloria and Tom,
too. I always love finding things like that -- personal graffiti, for
lack of a better term.

Glad you enjoyed my contribution. I absolutely enjoyed making it.

After looking at Ted's shots, I must say I'm submitting these humbly,

Glad you liked it, Bruce. As far as being paid to say nice things
about APS-C, I'm not sure what the Pentax sponsorship entails (maybe
Godfrey can enlighten us), but I'm sure it's not enough to keep him
shooting Pentax if he's unhappy with APS-C. He's a pro that needs to
make money, and if FF could get him more contracts and/or improve his
photography he would've gone down that route long ago.

The question of FF was one I asked him personally when I met him and I
wished he would've given me the same reply in writing as he did when
we spoke. He originally said more or less what's printed, but when I
pressed him on the subject and brought up the FF wars in the forums he
said "look, I don't have time to argue APS-C vs FF, my business is
producing photographs that sell, period. My APS-C cameras have never
held me back, and on the occasions when I have needed bigger images,
I've gone with my Pentax 67, and in those situations FF would not have
been any better anyway. That's why I'm buying a 645D, so it can
replace my 67." [Note: I've paraphrased from memory.]

Like most pros I've spoken to, he's a pragmatic chap :-)

The 645D is priced considerably below its medium format competition, so I think
it most definitely justifies the price. By all indications, it's going to be a
major profit center for Pentax. I expect that in three or four years, when a 60
or 80 megapixel version is available, the current cameras will be selling used
for a few thousand. That's when I'll buy mine:-).

PESO: For Baseball Fans

2010-11-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I spent some time wandering around Baltimore last week, while my wife
was at a science teachers' convention.  I visited the Orioles' Park at
Camden Yards, a beautiful baseball facility.  There were plaques
honoring the players in the Orioles Hall of Fame, and a few players
were represented by sculptures representing their uniform numbers
outside the main entrance.  There was only one statue of a player,
however, and I invite Americans who follow baseball to identify the
player given this singular honor:

Of course, comments, criticisms, suggestions and abuse are invited.

Yes Indeed. [The answer to most baseball trivia questions happens to

Well, it's all about Babe Ruth. Very few American sports figures have

Yeah, camera was resting on my knee. I wanted to remain
inconspicuous, as I suspected that both of them were wary of me. He
was completely flirting with her, and she certainly didn't seem to
mind. I really wanted a shot of him looking at her, but I'll take him
looking at camera.

Thanks for the kind words, Boris, and thanks to all who looked and commented.

Thanks, Brian. I might give this one another go. I was bracketing,
and I did get better exposures of this scene, but of course, this was
the only frame that caught the damned seagull "just right".

Yes, Boris, this would have looked wonderful if shot in medium or large format!

Oh man, that ~does~ look like good pizza. One of the things I miss
most about being vegan is a hot slice of pepperoni pizza with extra
cheese from either Massimo's or Bitondo's in Toronto's Little Italy.
Grace's looks like one of those. Hot, gooey and messy, but delicious!

Lovely shot.

was been stolen last week from an exhibition in the Central station Metro in

I agree. Cheese is several steps removed from the animal. And cows, goats and
water buffalo are more than willing to give up their milk. And what about
cheese made from human breast milk? Can vegans consume that? If not, can a
vegan child breast feed? So many questions, so few answers. But I know that
while I could probably give up meat if someone held a gun to my head, I would
never sacrifice cheese. Pull the trigger, and put me out of my misery.

You were too slow, Larry! When word got out it seems everyone ordered
one. I just got off the phone with my guy at B&H and he says the K-5
has been selling very well--new stock should be coming soon, in a week
or so.

As a side story, I told him I was surprised sales were so strong given
all the forum complaints about the price compared to the Nikon D7000
and he said "What!? The D7000 is a nice amateur camera, but the K-5 is
a *professional* camera. There's no comparison!" Make of that what you
will :-)

Colour management gurus, I need your help!

2010-11-15 Thread Tanya Love

Ok, so I know that if I did some googling I'd find the solution to this but
I have two interstate trips this week and no time, so...

I am working on two Dell 2410 monitors. I have one only calibrated using
the Xrite i1 system. I am using a laptop so only have one video card, so do
all my editing on the calibrated monitor and my other work on the
uncallibrated one.

My PC is an i7 processor (Q820 @ 1.73ghz), with 8gb RAM, running Windows 7
Ultimate (64 bit) and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M GPU. I am shooting in RAW
(.dng, not pef), and using ACR in Lightroom 3 for my initial edits.

So, here is my issue. I know that this has something to do with colour
profiles, but can't get my head around what it is that is wrong. AND, it
has only recently happened, everything used to be fine until a month or so
ago and I haven't done any
System changes that I know of, except for normal updates, in that time.

When I complete my edits in LR3, they look fine, I am really happy with the
colour balance etc, but when I export the files and view them in either
Photoshop, or any other file viewer outside of LR, (for example when they
are uploaded to Facebook or my blog or whatever), or when I include them in
emails, the colours are all wrong, and VERY red. There is mch too
much red (and maybe yellows too) in the files but only AFTER they've been
exported from LR.

AND, if I open a RAW file in ACR through PS that has already been processed
in LR3, it does the same thing - looks great in ACR, or in PS, but once I
save it as a jpg and view it outside of PS or LR3, it looks like the
models/kids have spent a whole lot of time outside without any sunscreen on.

Any ideas???

Thanks so much!

Tan.x.

What color space are you using when you export? It sounds as if you've
got it set to something weird. For almost all exports you should set
Color Space to "sRGB" in the Lightroom Export dialog.

You should use other color spaces for your own inkjet printing or for
sending files to high-end print services that can use (and
specifically request) other color spaces. Other than that, go for
sRGB.

RE: Colour management gurus, I need your help!

2010-11-15 Thread Tanya Love
Hey Mark,

I was hoping you'd see my plea!

Ok, so I just had a thought - I do remember that I as working in ProPhoto
RGB for a while there, but I definitely export to sRGB now. My monitor is
also calibrated to sRGB. But it has a specific profile saved and I just
exported using it too, and it was the same result. I just tried exports
using sRGB, Prophoto RGB, Adobe RGB AND my own monitor profile and they are
all the same - red/orange, and NOTHING like what I am looking at in LR3 or
ACR (PS CS5).

So frustrating!

What color space are you using when you export? It sounds as if you've got
it set to something weird. For almost all exports you should set Color Space
to "sRGB" in the Lightroom Export dialog.

You should use other color spaces for your own inkjet printing or for
sending files to high-end print services that can use (and specifically
request) other color spaces. Other than that, go for sRGB.

Re: Colour management gurus, I need your help!

2010-11-15 Thread P. J. Alling

I can't think of anything other than that you're not exporting sRGB.

On 11/15/2010 8:00 PM, Tanya Love wrote:

The Fed is supposed to manipulate the economy within certain limits.
Mostly to anticipate the size of the money supply required to match
economic activity, to smooth out peeks and troughs due to natural
variations. Money acts as a lubricant in an economy, and just as with
an engine the wrong amount of oil will ruin it . The fact that The Fed
has proven to be utterly incompetent at it's task, about 3/4 of the time
and the Obama administration has chosen them to implement policies well
beyond it's original scope, (which did I mention it is often incompetent
at), just scares the bejesus out of me. The current Fed Chairman
isn't Milton Freedman, he isn't Paul Volcker, he isn't even Allen
Greenspan, at least Greenspan had some idea that something was going
wrong...

I'm back, and so is @PDML

2010-11-15 Thread Tim Bray
The summer trip to Chicago, except for the couple of hours I spent in
your company, was disastrous on some other fronts, and then I got
super-busy at work, then I noticed I was like 2000-plus messages
behind on PDML. Also, the PESO/Twitter mashup broke when Twitter
introduced a barbaric technology called "OAuth". Long story short:
recently I've been shooting more and consequently missing y'all and
your pictures. So I fixed the mashup and will post a couple of pix to
prove I'm here.

A quick mashup primer: It's at http://twitter.com/#!/PDML, @PDML for
short, and if you're a twitter/Pentax kind of person you might enjoy
it. If you post anything with a subject line that begins PESO or GESO
it shows up there. It's case-sensitive, so if you want to avoid that
just say Peso or peso or whatever. I wasn't smart enough to figure
out how to make it skip over the hundreds of PESOs since it broke in
August so it's doing 15 per hour and should be caught up in a couple
of days.

Photo news... recently I've been sort of infatuated with the
stupidly-good-for-its-size-and-price Canon S90. So when I travel I
take my K20, the 40mm and 21mm Limiteds, and the S90; a very compact
and versatile kit. The S90 has a bit of zoom and is damn near the
K20's equal for low-light.

I am totally planning on not buying a K-5. Totally, I keep telling myself.
