Re: test chart links wanted
I've had it for over a year but thus far I've rarely shot flat subjects wide open and I'm not much of a pixel peeper so it may well have escaped me until now. I'll go for the wall then. The idea was to have something to show to Pentax when I drive over there. Ecke 2010/11/29 paul stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net: For a flat focus test all you need is a textured wall, a tripod and a level. Just make sure the camera is parallel to the wall and the lens is perpendicular to the wall. Then shoot wide open. It was easy to spot the focus error on my first 16-50. DA18-135 DC review
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax_18-135mm_review.php Not a thorough review IMO but interesting none the less. In brief, the AF seems in good step up from previous SDM implementations. It may not be state of the art but is fairly faster than SDM lenses. They were very surprised. The performance is, of course, limited by the type of lens, there's no wonder. But still, for such kind of lens it seems quite good. Better than usual Tammy 18-200 et all. The price is high but seems justified. Regards, Jaume I concur, Jaume. The 18-135/3.5-5.6 is just plain slow. Your Sigma is faster, slightly wider and probably just as good optically if not better. I still believe that the smaller zoom factor is (longest f.l. divided by shortest f.l.) - the less compromises can be made during lens design. I should say that having been shooting a lot with Sigma 24-60/2.8, I've grown to appreciate Sigma EX series. This lens is extremely high value for the money one usually buys it for (order of USD 250). One thing bothers me about the review that Miserere informed us about - I'd like to see real life shots in various conditions. But then again, the reviews like those on photozone are easy to get used to. I don't even care much about the reviews themselves, but photozone publishes interesting and useful real life examples of the lens. This new lens is indeed very fascinating and I would gladly read more about it. Re: DA18-135 DC review
I haven't been too excited about this, it's the aps-c functional equivalent of the 28-200mm a lens that as a class fails to impress. The preview, (I wouldn't call it a review) actually is nicely positive, but I question the reviewers judgment when he states, ...the lenses that most closely resembled it were the 17-70mm F4 and the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3, *both of which have different uses*. (Emphasis mine). Well no not really, at least in the case of the 18-250, they are pretty much designed for the same usage, a lens that covers everything you're likely to shoot. Additionally he displays a lack of historical perspective since the 28-200mm wasn't a cheap lens when introduced, not only being more expensive, when inflation is taken into account, and a larger percentage of the kit's cost, when taking into account the difference in price of the cameras it was designed for. He mentions a nit, the reversed positions of the focus and zoom rings vis-à-vis the normal Pentax practice, which I doubt will bother it's target audience as they will most likely never own another lens. Hi All, While shooting an argentine tango performance over the weekend I set the WB of my K-7 to Tungsten light. I was surprised to see that while ~80% of shots were with about the right color, some considerable number of shots had a distinctive. It was not as red as it would have been if I left the WB to be on Auto, but still yellow. All the shots were taken under the same condition: in the same room, from the same point, with no light changing, just the couple moving. More over,- some series of shots were made with the the couple in place ,- and some have the WB alright, and some - are yellow. Has anybody experienced anything of this sort? What could be the reason (besides some malfunction of the camera)? Pentax 17-70 repair -- on PARTS HOLD
Earlier this month, I sent my 17-70/4 zoom for repair (while it was still under warranty, - before the end of the 1st year). It had problems focusing on the long end of the focal length, - AF (and I couldn't get the focus confirmation when focusing manually). I just spoke with the service center, and they told me that they are waiting for the parts (the circuit board), and Pentax has no ETA for its arrival. I also spoke with the Pentax Support, but they haven't given any estimates either. 1. I wonder what is happening with PEntax that they don't have even ETA for their parts. 2. I wonder if this problem (or more likely, - the absence of the circuit boards) can be related to the infamous SDM problem. Studio lights in the mezzanine
Last year I did the event photography for a lindy hop workshop and dance competition: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622962803714/ I've been asked to be the photographer again this year. Maybe it was my skill, maybe my price (admission to the workshop), or maybe it's because the person who runs it has a K10D. What I did last year which worked pretty well was put my strobes up in the mezzanine and used a radio trigger. Unfortunately, when I was doing the setup for the event one of my white lightnings let the magic smoke out so I had one studio strobe on one side, and all of my camera strobes on the other side of the mezzanine. I could either use the two strobes without diffusers (the new one is in theory 3 times the power of the old one, so they'd work as key and fill), run them through umbrellas, or reflecting off umbrellas, or possibly try some sort of fresnel lens (like the ones you put in the back of RVs) to spread out the beam. I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas, suggestions or warnings. PS Igor, I don't suppose I'll run into you and Jane there, will I? Re: Studio lights in the mezzanine
I probably wouldn't use an umbrella, but if I did, I'd use shoot-through rather than bounce (personal preference mostly). It'll make the light bigger, but also eat a stop or two of your light. Depending on how high that mezzanine is, the light won't be any softer due to the distance. A fresnel is going to focus the light rather than disperse it. It'd end up being like a Better Beamer. If you want to spread out the light, a large sheet hung up in front of the light will create a much larger light source than an umbrella and a much softer light. It's hard to tell from your pictures, but if the ceiling is white, you could try bouncing off the ceiling for very soft, even light, with one light in the mezzanine for key, and maybe a flash on camera for a little bit of fill. With two lights, you could easily have them pointing toward the opposite side of the floor against each other. That way, the lights will make key/fill based on where they are on the floor, and you can keep them the same power. The pictures in your link look pretty good to me, you seem to have a pretty good handle so far. Re: White Balance on K-7
From: Igor Roshchin Yes, that could do it in principle, but it doesn't make sense in the current situation. Since I _fixed_ the WB to a particular setting, very slight changes shouldn't affect the WB. To better illustrate what I observe, - let me show you this image: http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2010/WB-problem-2010-11-27.jpg No WB or exposure settings were changed in this sequence. These photos were not modified. Yes, one can correct the WB, but it is not how it should work, isn't it? My $0.02 ... It looks like the series were shot with daylight WB, and that in a few instances (the ones that are not yellow) you caught the room while it was illuminated by someone else's flash (or someone's flash went off while your shutter was open). Not saying that's what it is, just that it looks like that to me. I can easily get that yellow cast by shooting with daylight WB under mixed tungsten fluorescent light. And the ones that are not yellow look like daylight WB flash. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
