No. It works with dirty and clean sensors. I know it's not always

Set camera to AF and you get the Dust Alert working.

Yup, I concur there Paul. I probably should have mentioned some other stuff
that is a "given" to me as I am so used to shooting this way, and just
"looking" for the light in my usual way. Like I said, I am so NOT
technical. When looking at these and mentioning "late afternoon light" I
failed to mention my assumption that the light source was either hidden by
surrounding buildings and/or already below the horizon to achieve that
texture that we speak of. When you refer to "north light" that makes no
sense to me as I am in a different hemisphere, so not really sure what
direction we are talking, iykwim?

Anyways, I think Walt has the general gist of it all now!

Possibly. But open shade light is flat if the source is a broad expanse of
north light. Some of these have much more texture than would result from
that kind of light. I wouldn't be surprised if she;s reflecting sky light on
some of these -- or perhaps she was using only a small patch of sky. It's
always hard to be sure without seeing the setup. But I just wanted to make
the point that the camera doesn't see what the photographer sees. That's key
to learning to work with light.

Phew! That's a relief, I don't want to EVER sound pompous or condescending,
I just love spruiking to people that you can do all of this WITH a Pentax in
hand. You should see the looks on the faces of other pros at trade shows
etc when they realise that I am still shooting Pentax. It is even an "in"
joke amongst some when they see me around the traps and say "you aren't
STILL shooting Pentax are you, when are you ever going to upgrade?!". I
always say back to them, "I just did upgrade, this is a new camera I have
here!". Lol!

Anyways, I have SUCH a ways to go to reach anywhere near the level that I'd
like to be at, (which is to be able to pay my bills) and it isn't likely to
happen whilst I have five little kids, but my eldest starts high school this
year, and things are becoming a little more "free" in that I am not so
"bound" and can travel more as the kids are getting older and can handle me
being away overnight etc.

I meant to post about the Vancouver bus thing! It turned out to be a bit of
a fizzer. They all went out but the artwork was totally different to the
original plan due to budget constraints so in the end about 6 brands all put
in together for a montage of sorts and the image that they ended up using of
mine was pretty small, so would have been hard to see unless you were
reaaally looking. But anyways, onwards and upwards!

As for you being an "underachiever", Steve that is completely subjective
Steve and something that I doubt to be factual at all! :)

This may make some people cringe, but at that point, what I did was use one of
the inexpensive blower brushes to brush the dust off the sensor, then hit it
again with the rocket blower. I've had to do that about 5-10 times over the

resort to pentax swabs once.

Re: OT: Photographer Monique

2010-12-12 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Thanks for the clarification, Paul.

I guess the gist of what I'm saying is that I'm just happy to know that
use of flash isn't required to get that kind of effect; something I'd
*suspected* was the case, and was hoping would be confirmed by people
who've been at this a bit longer than I have. Given that I'm just not
adept at using flash due to having very little experience with it, I'm
always happy to know it's not required.

And, boy, am I ever aware of the fact that the camera sees things
differently from the way I do. I've managed to get a fairly decent
handle on positioning for best results in available light by just
shooting from different perspectives and adjusting the camera
accordingly. And, I'm perfectly happy to return to a particular scene
when I think the available natural light will be more advantageous at a
different time for a specific angle.

Of course, I'll eventually have to come to terms with using flash if I
ever hope to make any money taking photos. But, for now, I just employ
the "shoot, CHIMP, adjust, shoot, CHIMP, adjust, shoot..." method until
I develop an intuition for it.

a mix of shadow and highlight. Getting the right mix takes practice. The camera tends to
make the difference between shadow and highlight much more extreme than does your eye.
That's because your eye and brain combine to balance he difference. The most difficult
part of photography is learning what the camera will see and how it will differ from what
you see.

diffuser, and all manner of gewgaws and whirligigs to fully achieve the look.
And, yes -- the style is really similar to yours, save for Monique's lower-key
rendering. I can see where both would be beneficial, depending upon the actual
skin tone of the subject.

What I loved about the contrast/depth in the third image is that it seemed to make the
shot more expressive by a long shot, and that's a quality I've noticed in a lot of shots
that really "grabbed" me. But, I was never able to put my finger on the
particular quality until now. And, now that I've discovered the virtues of shooting in
RAW, I just might stand a chance of achieving that quality.

Thanks again for the helpful reply. Now, if I can just get some cooperative

Hey there Walt,

I know the effect that you mean, and it is very easy to do, in fact, it is
almost my style exactly. The key lies in the light and the texture.

Firstly, it must be shot with available light, in full open shade, and late
in the afternoon, with the child facing into/toward the sun, or with the sun
to the side of the child, depending upon where you want the shadows to fall.
Don't add a reflector to fill shadows. You must also shoot RAW because in
the post-processing, you will need to increase the dynamic range by
reworking the shadows/highlights to achieve the depth that you need.

Next, you have to make sure that the image contains a good mix of textures,
that way, when you do your post on it, it will have a lot of contrast and
that "depth" that you speak of.

I can only see one shot of Moniques on that page that looks as though she
may have added some artificial light to it, and that is the one with the
violin, but even it may have been shot with available light too, depending
what the original location/backdrop was, it is hard to tell with that shot
due to the post production work (btw, I LOVE that shot!).

Here is a quick example that I just did up for you. I processed it to
achieve a similar feel in the sepia to the example that you showed (although
the skin tones are a bit more high key as I prefer them this way), but also
included a colour version as that is how I originally intended it to look
when I shot it.

http://www.lovebytes.com.au/files/waltsexample.jpg

I do all of my main post in Lightroom, and then tweak the final
levels/curves in PS CS5.

Hope that helps!

The biggest issues are twofold, first off PS CS5 is rather buggy on OS
X, where it's effectively a 1.0 release (first Cocoa version) while
the Windows version is much more stable (PS has been better on Windows
for the last two releases due to the Carbon/Cocoa switch and related
issues). Secondly you've got the relative lack of 64bit plugins on the
Mac side limiting the utility of CS5 in 64bit form, thirdly you've got
the lack of 64bit support in most non-PS imaging apps on the Mac side
unlike Windows where pretty much everything's been 64-bit capable for
a full release cycle or more.

The problems with 64bit on OS X are: a combination of the Carbon/Cocoa
switch which was forced by Apple killing the announced 64-bit Carbon
support late in the dev cycle which caused the CS4 release cycle to
stay 32bit on OS X, serious bugs with Photoshop CS5 related to the
switch (CS5 on Windows is simply more stable than the Mac version),
the fact that many plugins which are 64bit capable in Windows aren't
in their Mac versions as their release cycles haven't caught up to
CS5, the fact that CS5 has even more issues in 32 bit mode on OS X
than it does in 32 bit mode (max memory limitations which CS3 and CS4
lack and you have to use the 32bit version of CS5 to use 32bit
plugins) and the simple fact that 64 bit support is much more mature
on the Windows side (where it's been functionally mature since Vista
was released) than the Mac side (where Snow Leopard is the first fully
64bit version of OS X) which means that there's a solid library of
64bit capable apps and drivers in Windows which OS X lacks. OS X is
well ahead of where Vista was in terms of 64 bit support at the same
point in the release cycle thanks to the partial 64 bit support in
Leopard but it lags where Windows is now.

LR does have less issues because it's been on Cocoa for longer than PS.

Note I expect that these issues will go away with the next release
cycle for PS and OS X, but they do exist today.

It's snowing just now (11pm), but earlier today it rained - a cold,
dark, miserable December rain:

Hope you enjoy (especially if you live in the Southern Hemisphere).
:-) Comments welcome.

I've read that subject in the manual a couple times. May make some sense of it
all tomorrow.

Possibly. But open shade light is flat if the source is a broad expanse of
north light. Some of these have much more texture than would result from that
kind of light. I wouldn't be surprised if she;s reflecting sky light on some of
these -- or perhaps she was using only a small patch of sky. It's always hard
to be sure without seeing the setup. But I just wanted to make the point that
the camera doesn't see what the photographer sees. That's key to learning to
work with light.

Re: Dust Alert

2010-12-12 Thread Jack Davis
Dust Alert must work intermittently as is the case with the DA 55~300.
I've used the Pentax gummy pen and bulb blower.
As I see no spots on the images, I'm beginning to actually wonder if it's on
the sensor.(?)
Does the Dust Alert come alive only when it actually recognized that the sensor
needs cleaning?

I hope I didn't offend with my post, it was more of just one of those
"reflections of 2010" type things, and trying to instigate a bit of
conversation... not trying to sound as though I am bragging or anything,
and definitely not exaggerating. Quite the opposite actually, cause I am
working waay too much and still not making any money!

Rob, we need to catch up one of these days, I've been in Sydney thrice this

RE: OT: Photographer Monique

2010-12-12 Thread Tanya Love

Hey Paul,

I totally agree, but wanted to give Walt specific instructions that he could
easily replicate. For the examples that he showed, they were most
definitely shot in "available" or "natural" light in late afternoon, and in
open shade (ie. The shadow cast by the buildings that she has her subjects
against). There has been no light modification in these shots except for
the angle of the subject to achieve side/backlighting etc, which is more
what I was trying to emphasise in my explanation.

The contrast that you speak of (ie. How the light differs from shadow to
highlight) as it is seen in those shots, is most easily achieved in the
conditions that I explained above. The textures of the walls, wood etc that
she has used only highlight this contrast which is what gives the "depth" to
these images. Particularly in the shot of the little girl out the window,
you can see there are very subtle catchlights in the top half of her eyes
and dark shadow under her chin/eyes. This is most definitely achieved by
late afternoon light, if there were any fill added to this, the shadows
would have been softer and the catchlights brighter/lower.

I completely agree with your final sentence - ie. " The most difficult part
of photography is learning what the camera will see and how it will differ
from what you see." Being able to predict the final outcome is the whole
object as far as I am concerned. It is something that has taken me almost
10 years to get a hold of and I still get curve balls thrown into the mix
that make me think. I am getting much more accurate these days though, and
rarely rely on meters, or numbers to get me my results. I just know now
that I can look at a scene and turn a dial to the left or right a few
notches and it will give me what I want. I hate the techo stuff anyways, I
leave that to you guys on the PDML, so that I can just wave my little
"damsel in distress" flag when I need to and not have to boggle my mind with
more than it can handle! Lol.

It's not about whether the light is "available" or provided by the
photographer. It's about the direction of the light and how much it differs
from shadow to highlight. Subtle shadows and texturing may frequently
require some fill light in addition to what nature or room lighting
provides. The texturing you see is the result of a mix of shadow and
highlight. Getting the right mix takes practice. The camera tends to make
the difference between shadow and highlight much more extreme than does your
eye. That's because your eye and brain combine to balance he difference. The
most difficult part of photography is learning what the camera will see and
how it will differ from what you see.

Very innocent really! You should hear the name of some of the other cloth
nappy brands around the traps! There is: "Cherubs Kiss", "Bits For Bots",
"Bubblebubs", "Pea Pods", "Bonnibuns", "Bambooties", "Bum Genius", "Baby
Beehinds", "Booty Crawl", "Cheeky Butts", "Mini Lala", "Itti Bitti", "Wee

Pantz", "Nappy Days", "Wiggle Bums" and looots more. It is a whole
underground society this cloth nappy thing!

BUT, my hands down, all time favourites are, drum roll

"Krap Katchers" and
"Hippybottomus"

I kid you not these are REAL businesses! Google them and you'll find their
websites! Lol.

Yeah, Godfrey emailed me about that site, so funny as I've never even seen

Hey Paul, you are going to have to give me a tutorial one day on how to
achieve those car racing shots that you do so well, for the life of me, I
can't manage
to get those bloody things in focus!

I think that site is pretty much dormant. It was a voluntary thing that
seems to have fizzled. And Godfrey quite shooting Pentax quite some time
ago.

A fair amount of photo work, most of it editorial and primarily automotive.
Much of it in conjunction with my writing, which occupies much of my time. A
bit of ad photography as well.
Lots of pictures of Grace. Hope to make it to GFM, but I always hope and
never make it:-).

Wow. I *really* like those images!

Most of the technique involves having the right lighting on your
subject before pointing your camera at the subject.

RE: OT: Photographer Monique

2010-12-12 Thread Tanya Love

Tan.x.

Dust Alert

2010-12-12 Thread Jack Davis
I performed the Dust Alert with the K20 and DA55~300. I got a debris field
similar to the one I'm sending each time. I did the Dust Removal numerous times
and all that happens is the debris is re-distributed.
I went to my DA*50~135 and sensor appeared clean. I then tried another lens and
found the Dust Alert grayed out and has refused to wake up.
I open the 55~300 aperture and peered through it, out of frustration, but saw
nothing floating around in there. :(

Any ideas?

Pretty impressive reenactment. I especially like the one with the cannons

I love this.

Two women. Connected. Walking in opposite directions. They might have
become friends (seeing they have similar tastes in footwear) but we'll
never know. They're connected somewhere, but not right here right now.

Love it.

It's rare to see a young woman these days who's not either texting or
talking on her cellphone. (That would be sexist if it weren't true. As
such it's just an observation.) The guys do it too, but not quite as much.
So this scenario isn't unusual. But the young lady in the foreground is

Jack, My K 7 was on the tripod and since the shot you looked at was ISO 100, I
know it was the K 10D with the DA 18-250. For me, that lens is soft no matter
what shutter speed I shoot it at. I was using the K 10D and that lens to have a
wide focal range, while I had the F 100-300 on my K 7 on the tripod. Neither of
these lenses are very sharp but that is what I have for longer focal length
work. Need to sell a bunch of work and make some $'s to get some good long
focal
length glass. Diane seems to think we need to pay the bills and eat more than
buying new lenses. I had the K 7 set for expanded dynamic range so it's base
ISO
was at 200. I almost always shoot at low ISO's in daylight. Guess it is a
holdover from the days of film.

Thanks for looking and commenting

I wasn't in that discussion, but I have a BC-900 and it has served me
flawlessly, with lots of nice geeky options for measuring cell
capacity, etc.

I no longer have printing problems with Snow Leopard and my Epson 2880. There
was a system update from Apple a while back that was described as "Epson
Upgrade." Don't know what it did, but my printing is now excellent. Just made
six 11 x 17x for a customer this morning. All spot on. No redos. (Which was a
good thing, because I was down to seven sheets of Exhibition Fibre.

Interesting reenactment. Appears to be a serious effort very well recorded,
Ted. (if I may?)
Seriously, is the slightly soft look done in support of the era portrayed? I
downloaded one image and see ISO 100 and 1/60s on a shot from some distance and
on a somewhat less than bright day and scene.
Hand held?
I've deleted your downloaded image.

I have the MAHA 401FS, Lacrosse BC900, and MAHA C9000. All have worked
very well. No complaints/problems with any of them. The latter two are
excellent for sorting out older sets of cells --- have not had any of
the reported overheating problems with them. My go to unit is the
401fs simply because its is small, simple/quick to use, and seems to
have a good charge algorithm. Both MAHA units take 12v, which is a
plus for me. I often forget to recharge/top-off my batteries before a
field trip and it helps to be able set up a set or two in the car on the
way to wherever.

It's a tossup, really.

Right now I'd have to prefer Windows for Photo editing work. Better 64
bit support (allowing you to make use of more than 3GB of RAM) and the
printing system doesn't have the issues that Snow Leopard currently
has (and Apple still hasn't fixed. It ain't just PS with profile
issues in Snow Leopard, the problem is in the printing system). It's
not a huge difference but Windows has fixed most of the 64 bit issues
and OS X still has a few of those. This is mostly a result of Windows
(and the Windows version of Photoshop) having gone fully 64-bit a full
version cycle ahead of OS X.

That said, OS X is definitely ahead for Audio work and you get a
pretty good low-end multitrack recording app in Garageband for free.
