Re: Advice solicitation for analog shooting
Walter, about those metering and mid gray things. A simple but very effective thing our teacher asked us: Take a pic of a white object (like sheets of paper), a gray object and a black object. To stay simple, the three objects will have about the same color (gray of course). This is simple and clearly nails the problem. A built-in meter (and any meter used in reflective metering), even how modern it is, is always influenced by color and reflection power of the metered object. 2011/2/10 Walter Gilbert ldott...@gmail.com: Thanks for the explanation, Collin. When Paul said to overexpose, I was actually thinking it sounded counter-intuitive -- that you'd want to under-expose in a snowy situation. But, it makes sense now that you explained that the meter assumes a neutral grey. So, I'm assuming that in extra-low-light situations, I'd want to under-expose by a couple of stops in that case. Question about Metz 45CL4 (analog one, not the recent digital version) and SCA adapters
I should receive my 45CL4 any day now. I bought it for my C330 but intend to use it with my K7/SuperA/KX/MX as well since I have it anyway. The question is: would there be a significant difference when using it with SCA adaters between 372 and 3702 adapters? AFAIK current Pentax DSLRs still support the old analog signaling although plain TTL isn't supported anymore. In that case, IMO, 3702 would add exactly nothing. But I'm not sure so... yep that is what I have my eTrex Legend for - it upsets me somewhat though that the Oregon was announced just a few days after I bought mine and that once again just recently when I had to buy a smartphone the Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50 had just become unavailable from my cellular provider. free Garmin nav with lifetime nümaps for a device costing 35% less than the Defy would have been just too nice even with a 320x480 display as opposed to the Defy's ruggedized 854x480. then again I've thus far been too lazy to log with the eTrex and too conservative about (and wary of) exposing my wherewhenabouts on the iNet so I've yet to find use for it for myself - I practically never have time to reshoot, I don't offer anything location based that will earn me a single cent, and quite frankly these days I don't take many pictures, my DAD (Duplo A Day) tilt/shift architecture project is still on ground, my photography is overwhelmingly listless and underwhelmingly uninspired. but hey maybe taking a bookworthy pic for the annual could be a source of appetite I'll try my bloody hardest. Keep your eyes open for cheap manual flashes, but watch the trigger voltage and make sure it isn't so high that it'll fry your camera. TTL flashes don't work on the K-r, or any of the other recent Pentax DSLRs. Mea culpa, I mentally translated TTL to P-TTL, just treating it as Through The Lens metering in general. The AF540 is a good flash. It's P-TTL, which is the Pentax auto format. Why would you want to use it in manual mode. So far, I've found three reasons to use my AF540 in manual mode, My K100Dsuper, my K20D, and to a lesser extent my K-x. Frankly, in my experience, Pentax flash metering technology lies somewhere between useless and destructive. Granted, it has improved a lot lately, and I have actually found several situations with the K-x that using p-ttl with the AF-540 has led to photos with nearly acceptable exposure. But, even if p-ttl were to work perfectly the question of why I would want full control of any piece of photographic equipment stuns me from a photographer of your ability? Do you just leave your camera in green mode and autofocus and let it make every decision for you? I didn't buy a DSLR because of how well it took photos without my input, I took a DSLR because of how well it lets me control it. I can exercise much more control over the P-ttl 540 flash than I ever could over a manual flash. I can dial in exposure comp, plus or minus. I can synch it at high speed, and I can tell it to flash trailing the curtain. Now are you stunned? Apparently, you didn't know how capable this flash can be. Yes, Pentax flash technology is far from perfect, and the 540 doesn't always work in complete harmony with the cameras. But I've found it's very accurate with the K-5. It was less than perfect with the K20, but I was still able to use it very effectively on many occasions. I use studio strobes on many occasions, and I've used manual flashes extensively for many years. They're very limiting. At a given distance, you're either locked into an f-stop or forced to resort to diffusion, filtering and other means to try to get to the stop you want. Not good. Somewhat useless in many situations. Re: Question about Metz 45CL4 (analog one, not the recent digitalversion) and SCA adapters
Without TTL support, I'm not really sure that it'll give you anything over using a stock SCA-301 even, on a 45 series? I don't have one of these, but I have a flock of 60CTs, and really there's little to be gained by any form of dedicated SCA with these on non-TTL capable cameras. - Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Question about Metz 45CL4 (analog one, not the recent digital version) and SCA adapters
Thanks both of you. In theory the SCA372 should bring: * flash recycle LED in viewfinder when supported * Auto-commute to X-sync speed when supported * Plain old TTL (when used with SuperA/Z1) The 374 (the AF one) or 370x modules *may* provide 2nd curtain sync (when supported by camera). I should test my old 240FT and see if the LED lights up in K7 viewfinder and 2nd curtain sync. Anyway, not sure it brings enough to buy the cables and adapters again (I sold mine to Boris months ago with a very nice 40MZ2 ;) X-sync cord will do it IMO :) 2011/2/11 eckinator eckina...@gmail.com: No but I'd be interested to find out as I still have a 45CT5 kicking around from my Canon days and it is a mighty fine flash Cheers Ecke 2011/2/11, Thibouille pentaxl...@gmail.com: I should receive my 45CL4 any day now. I bought it for my C330 but intend to use it with my K7/SuperA/KX/MX as well since I have it anyway. The bad news is that the AF540 is damn near useless as a manual flash. I meant to say that the on-camera manual flashes are very limiting, because they lock you in to an exposure. Some allow incremental power adjustments, but they're not in synch with f stops. Some allow no adjustment at all. Most studio strobes are very manageable, because they're infinitely adjustable to a certain point, and there are many ways to diffuse and position them. But when it comes to on-camera, P-TTL is as good as it gets for Pentax. I am hoping for a better flash from Pentax some time soon. In fact, I've held off on having one of my 540s repaired. Re: PESO: The Wire Welder
Thanks to all who have shared comments. I seem to like this particular image more than The Collective, it seems. One interesting feature of the mirror lens (that I didn't think about before getting one) is the way it makes the edges of objects inside the focal plane semi-transparent. This is due to the central obstruction in a mirror lens that gives you an almost-stereo effect. The mirror to the right of the central obstruction is blocked from seeing the more distant objects while the mirror to the left of the edge can see a bit more past it. This simultaneous double exposure results in the semi-transparent edge you see in the red/orange toolbox to the right. This is an element that can be used creatively. While I don't care for the donut bokeh created by the mirror lens, this simply means that it is best used (if one wishes to avoid them) where there will not be specular highlights in the background (lower dynamic range scenes, perhaps?) I'm having a hard time believing how shallow the depth of field on this lens is, even when focusing at a great distance. I took an image of a field full of white tail deer on the way home from work (on a tripod) and was surprised to find that a narrow strip of cornstalks about 10 yards in front of the deer was sharply in focus while all else was not. It is a challenging lens to use through the viewfinder. I may have to make use of focusing through the live view (something I have been aware of for a while, but have so far eshewed). Where it is sharp it is very sharp (for a mirror lens) which surprises me. I've heard good things about this lens for a while and can see already that those opinions are justified. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OT - compact and versatile digital videocam? Advice needed
Hi All, I am looking for an advice on a compact and versatile digital videocam. I've never done much of video capturing. I started playing with it occasionally since I have it my K-7, - in the situations when I need to capture things like a class summary. Now, I need one for my class. I may use it occasionally for two other things: 1. being able to display the live video on the computer in real time (via USB or similar connection) I need to be able to switch to different resolutions: at least 1024x768 and one of the higher ones (e.g. 1280x780, 720p, 1080?) 2. take videos of class summaries in a somewhat low light condition. Other desired options: * HD-1080 resolution is not a must, but I'd like to have at least 720p. * It'd be nice to be able to record to SD cards, as I have a few of them already, but it isn't a deal breaker. * reasonable zoom: it'd be nice to have equivalent of the 28mm on full frame camera or maybe even slightly wider (24mm). * reasonably high-ISO would be nice. * autofocus during shooting * anti-shake (optical would be nice, but not a must) * manual focus option would be nice * automatic exponometry, but a possibility of manual adjustment would be considered. * compact size and small weight woulf be great. * Budget: I don't know yet. Definitely below $1K; but $500-800 would be preferred. Maybe cheaper, if reasonable cameras exist. There are probably a few more that I am forgetting at this point. I would greatly appreciate suggestions and pointers. re: Is Live View Also Sent Over The Video Output?
From: Glen Berry I was wondering if any of the Pentax DSLRs actually transmit a Live View video feed through their video output connection? The reason I'm asking, I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to place a Pentax DSLR in a remote location (on the end of a pole, for example) and view the Live View signal on a remote monitor. If so, you could trip the shutter remotely and use the camera in places where it's physically impractical to place your head behind the camera. If this would work, which models of Pentax support this sort of remote live viewing? http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2007/12/05/zigview-s2-digital-v.html Google SLR remote viewfinder - No virus found in this message. Re: Advice solicitation for analog shooting
The exercise they had us do was to mount three 8x10 cards together - white+gray+black. Then we had to photograph the three cards using reflected-light metering on the white, bracketing -2, -1, 0, +1, +2; ... on the gray, bracketing; ... on the black, bracketing. All shots had to be produced in one session so that all the exposures were in the same light. Direct sunlight was specified for the first time out. After processing the film, we had to produce a contact sheet printed to base+fog (so that you could just barely see the difference between black and the edge of the film). From: Thibouille Walter, about those metering and mid gray things. 2011/2/10 Walter Gilbert ldott...@gmail.com: ? Thanks for the explanation, Collin. When Paul said to overexpose, I was actually thinking it sounded counter-intuitive -- that you'd want to under-expose in a snowy situation. ?But, it makes sense now that you explained that the meter assumes a neutral grey. So, I'm assuming that in extra-low-light situations, I'd want to under-expose by a couple of stops in that case. The bad news is that the AF540 is damn near useless as a manual flash. I know that it has all of those controls on the back, and I've even used them all. Yes, Pentax flash technology is far from perfect, and the 540 doesn't always work in complete harmony with the cameras. But I've found it's very accurate with the K-5. It was less than perfect with the K20, but I was still able to use it very effectively on many occasions. On many occasions? Then you had much better luck with yours than I ever had with mine. I had far better success with the exposure on the 540, especially on the K20, adjusting it manually. Unfortunately, it refuses to stay in manual mode, so I'll get everything dialed in. Have a shot turn out fine, then it'll switch in and out of p-ttl so I never know what I'm going to get. Interestingly, I do have a similar problem with another flash (not pentax) which doesn't have a hard switch for p-ttl that switches in and out of p-ttl when I try to set it to manual, so it may not be the flash's fault. I just found that the combination of AF540 and K20 was a combination that practically guaranteed frustration. The metering on the K-x is so much better, likewise on the K-r I used, that I'm better off just letting it do what ever the hell it wants. I use studio strobes on many occasions, and I've used manual flashes extensively for many years. They're very limiting. At a given distance, you're either locked into an f-stop or forced to resort to diffusion, filtering and other means to try to get to the stop you want. Not good. Somewhat useless in many situations. In the strobist DVDs, he basically disables any sort of automatic metering and dials his strobes in manually. Then again, he uses Nikon speedlights which seem to be much, much nicer flashes than the Pentax gear. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

By the way, despite my complaints with the 540, I don't mean to imply that it is impossible to get good photos with it. The problem is what you get for how much you pay. I often have better luck with promaster flashes that I paid less to buy, than I've paid to repair the AF540. Then there is the case that mine has been in for repair at least three times. Fortunately the first two times were under warranty, so I only had to pay for it once. It is absolutely critical that it be attached tightly to the hot shoe. Re: OT - compact and versatile digital videocam? Advice needed
Probably the most competent video camera in the price bracket below $1K is the Panasonic Lumix GH2 fitted with the 14-150 HD lens. Unless you want a dedicated video camera, that is. But there aren't any large sensor video cams in that price bracket. The PUG and Other Acronyms (PDML FAQ)
An FAQ? Do we have one? Yes, as a matter of fact. Some years ago Greywolf (who no longer posts here) put together an short FAQ in response to a request by Don Sanderson (who also no longer posts here). For some time Greywolf maintained the FAQ on his website and posted the link to the list from time to time. Sometime later Scott dug up the FAQ from the Wayback Machine, updated it and placed it on the PUG pages. As it seems that maintaining the FAQ is (de facto) a responsibility of the PUG Master, I've accepted the precedent established by Scott, made a few amendments to Scott's amendments and posted the FAQ here: http://pug.komkon.org/general/mini-faq.html It's obviously of use mainly to new or prospective members as it explains some of the common acronyms used on the list. Photograph aspect ratios
Following the link posted by Liz, I came across another short article (blogpost?) on about.com written by her, http://photography.about.com/od/developingandprinting/qt/ImageFormats.htm I liked the subject: I thought it was the first time that I've seen somebody discussing different aspect ratios of the prints of different standard sizes and the planning needed for that. I've discussed briefly a related question earlier here, on PDML, in some comments that I personally tend to favor two aspect ratios : 2:3 and 1:1 (aka 6x6 :-) ). And these are the most common sizes that I tend to post to the web. In the past, when I was ordering prints at the labs, I usually ordered prints in those ratios (4x6, 10cmx15cm, 20cm x 30 cm, 8x12, etc.), and then it was sometimes harder to find a premanufactured (read: inexpensive) frame for 8x12, as 8x10 were more popular. Once I started printing my own photos with Epson R2880, I found that it is harder to do 8x12 prints, as the paper usually doesn't come in that size. So, every so often, I am trying to fit my 2:3 photo to 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Letter) formats. The same problem was (and is) occuring with 5x7 (aka 13cmx18cm) prints, - but at least it is much closer to the 2:3 ratio, so it is not as difficult to do the crop. After doing a search, I found that there were some people complaining about this issue earlier, e.g. here: http://forums.popphoto.com/showthread.php?279310-standard-photo-print-sizes I thought I'd share these with the PDMLers. Also, I hope Liz won't be too mad at me for criticizing her posting. I realize that the audience of about.com is mostly non-technical, but still ... First of all, I was surprised not seeing 8x12 and 3.5x5 among the standard print sizes. Second, the squarest ratio is 1:1! And that's been on the market for ages (albeit it's becoming less frequent, and may one day die). Third, the multiplication factor and the ratio (in the particular order of sides) are the same thing. So, the sentence It is often easier to think in terms of the length multiplication factors instead of the actual ratios. sounds weird. What it actually says is it is easier to use decimal numbers (decimal fractions) then [non-decimal] fractions. Fourth, I don't understand why 3.5:2.5 ratio is chosen for 5x7 prints (except that the size 3.5x2.5 is also considered to be one of the standard, - wallet, sizes). It's a bit weird to translate a ratio of simple numbers to a ratio of decimal non-intengers... I also would challenge this statement: Many cameras today record photographs in roughly a 3:2 ratio. This means that the long side is 1.5 times as long as the short side. This is the reason 4x6 has become a popular print size. I believe the reason (or to be exact, one of the main reasons) why 4x6 has become a popular print size is that the negative size on the 35mm film was 24x36mm, which has the same aspect ratio. More over, most sensor sizes (except those of DSLRs) are 4:3: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0210/02100402sensorsizes.asp . Magnum:50 Years at the Front Line of History--the book
Hi Everyone: Many on PDML have probably read this book, but for those who haven't, I heartily recommend a read. I liked it so much that tonight I'm going to start reading it again because I'm unwilling to say good by to the larger-than-life photographers or end the adventure. Before reading the book I knew little about Magnum. Of course, I had heard of Magnum, but not much else---I knew little of the in-house tensions, disagreements, both the positive and negative working dynamics, personalities, original mission, philosophical differences, financial struggles et al. The first part of the book does a wonderful job of rendering Robert Capa, whom I didn't know much about--wow! what a guy! What a fascinating human being. In the beginning he truly was the heart and soul of Magnum. Anyway, I highly recommend a read. *Magnum: 50 Years at the Front Line of History* written by Russell Miller Cheers, Christine from Chicago -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Photograph aspect ratios

I've discussed briefly a related question earlier here, on PDML, in some comments that I personally tend to favor two aspect ratios : 2:3 and 1:1 (aka 6x6 :-) ). And these are the most common sizes that I tend to post to the web. In the past, when I was ordering prints at the labs, I usually ordered prints in those ratios (4x6, 10cmx15cm, 20cm x 30 cm, 8x12, etc.), and then it was sometimes harder to find a premanufactured (read: inexpensive) frame for 8x12, as 8x10 were more popular. I have been printing in 4x6 and 8x12 for a very simple reason, those are the convenient sizes of paper that costco offers. If they print an 8x10, they do it on 8x12 paper and leave the margins. I do not, however, generally crop my photos to 8x12. If I crop them, I crop them to what works best, then when I print I zoom to fit leaving the margins on the paper to come out as they will. Liz's article seems to assume zoom to fill which seems silly to me. If you want zoom to fill, then lock the aspect ratio when you crop to the aspect ratio of the paper. Once I started printing my own photos with Epson R2880, I found that it is harder to do 8x12 prints, as the paper usually doesn't come in that size. So, every so often, I am trying to fit my 2:3 photo to 8x10 or 8.5x11 (Letter) formats. I grew up printing on 4x5, because that was what I could generally afford to print on. Printing 8x10s used up paper too fast. As such, I think that it has left me feeling more comfortable with crops that are closer to that aspect ratio than the wider aspect ratios of modern monitors. Second, the squarest ratio is 1:1! And that's been on the market for ages (albeit it's becoming less frequent, and may one day die).
