Re: As big as a submarine

Actually the case weighs 1.5 times more than the lens. It is a run of
the mill Otterbox type. There were two of these lenses in the bay from
an official sigma outlet after photokina, one Canon, one Nikon. they
went for 7K€ each compared to a list price of 20. seems demand or
appreciation isnt that huge. not surprisingly so, seeing this is a
specialist lens such as for vehicle mounted wildlife shooting etc.

OT: Old printer in new computer

2011-03-30 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

My uncle has bought a new desktop replacing a +10 yers old one. The old
computer
came bundled with a printer (HP 720c) and a scanner.
The scanner has USB connection but the printer has still only parallel port.

My question: is it possible to connect the printer to the new desktop with only
USB ports? It seems that there are drivers for Windows 7 but I am not sure
about
parallel to USB converters...does this exist and work with not too much hassle?
Any experiences?

Printers are cheap these days but I hate having to buy new things when the old
ones are still capable to do the job...

Thanks,
Jaume

She actually remarked that her sister 12-24 was even fatter and heavier and got
genuinely upset at the "can of tomatoes" remark, asked if I had ever seen a tin

that I had never seen one that would even come close.

Re: New Pentax System...April fools'?

2011-03-30 Thread Thibouille
For the same reason people think m43 is too big (at least in current
incarnations).
But, as you point it out, it brings problems inherent to sensor size
(noise and DOF).
It may get a market though. I know I wish my LX3 could change lens.
Even with its small sensor (bigger than the 1/2.33 chosen for NC-1 though).

As long as Pentax does indeed introduce a second system with APS
sensor I don't care much except that this NC-1 is.. UGLY.
'nuff said ;)

Thanks David.

I had already seen these converters, but for some reason (probably something I
read) it didn't seem as easy as plug and play. I just wanted to know if
someone
had experience connecting a parallel printer to a modern computer before
investing on the cable and ink for the old printer.

I must admit, I've not been on-list much over the last week, and I

the bird's posing quite beautifully.

The second is too cluttered and busy for me, but is certainly a good

In Toronto, the streetcars are the most reliable form of
transportation in the snow - except that it's difficult for them to
get around accidents and stuck cars due to being on tracks. But as
far as movement through snow itself, they're great!

Re: New Pentax System...April fools'?

2011-03-30 Thread Steven Desjardins
Pentax is also supposed to be working on a bigger (m43 or APS-C) Milc.
However, I suspect that Hoya is a more clever company and sees a
profit from a retro system like this, especially in the Japanese
market. After all, it will be really small and in the high end P&S
market it is a nice little camera. Of course, they also have to price
it like a high end P&S. More likely to sell accessories, e.g.,
lenses, then you would for a P&S,however. I wonder if they will make
an adapter for old Pentax glass?

Re: New Pentax System...April fools'?

2011-03-30 Thread Tim Bray
Well, the sensor IQ on my little Canon S90 is astounding given how
small it is. Something that small that could be both a pocket cam
and, when you need it, take a telephoto or F1.4 or whatever, would be
a compelling package. I guess you'd need a k-adapter, although the
thought of one of my heavy chunks of k-glass stuck on the front of the
teeny little Canon feels sort of perverted. -T

Name one system where sensor IQ is not the limiting factor.

With the exception of Jens, *everyone* on this list has chosen
a system camera (often more than one) because the convenience
of a smaller form factor outweighs the loss of image quality.

A K-5 may be 'good enough' for most people (for that matter,
a *ist-D is still good enough for a lot of purposes), but the
image quality still enters into the equation.

True of ALL of us, since the original Hebrew and Greek words (Sheol
and Hades) that are often translated "hell" are also translated
"grave" or "pit" (often by the same translations in other verses)
simply meant the common grave of all mankind (state of death).
However, that benign understanding of the word wasn't loaded with as

Very true. My great-grandfather's and grandfather's (now 97)

They went from an age when (from time immemorial) farmers broke ground

Re: New Pentax System...April fools'?

2011-03-30 Thread Steven Desjardins
What's funny is that even though we all know the "cropping factor" is
what gives "equivalent focal length", you have still jammed a whole
bunch of pixels into a tiny area. If you have decent light, its like
a tiny center crop of a stupidly high MP FF sensor, about 400 MP using
rough numbers. If you stick any M or K 50 on that thing with an
adapter, you have a 280 (35 equivalent lens). Which is exactly how
Pentax will sell it. Maybe they're hoping this will be like the I-10
in terms of buzz but with better IQ.

That's the nature of exponential growth.

James Burke had a popular TV series called "The Day the Universe Changed"
showing how some technologies totally disrupted the society of their time.

Apart from the change we see today (based on the internal combustion engine
at the start of the century, and computers about half as long ago), there
is also the advance in medical technology - spare part surgery is so common
that people rarely even think about it. And radio, and the atom bomb, and ...

But there was just as much of an upheaval two centuries earlier, with the
coming of the industrial age, and the move from the country to cities.

Before that there was Gutenberg, who created the first information age.
And so backwards through the ages to the introduction of various metals,
agriculture, timekeeping, navigation, etc.

I'm sure every age feels that theirs is the culmination of human advancement.
I just wonder what our grandchildren (if we have any) will consider to be the
defining technology of their time. It's probably surfaced by now, but hasn't
yet progressed much beyond the laboratory.

Jared Diamond has written some very good books about that sort of thing. In
particular, the influence on history of the domestication of the horse, and
the much later invention of the stirrup. He discusses these in Guns, Germs
and Steel. Well worth a read.

I seem to recall reading somewhere about a director of the patent office

resigning because there was 'nothing left to invent'. Next thing you know,

Re: pesos cormy and friend

2011-03-30 Thread Walter Gilbert
I had an absolute blast running around shooting the countryside with
Larry, and got more photos than I even know what to do with at this
point. I'm working on getting some cleaned up to post for the folks who
originally hosted me on the trip at the moment, but I'll be posting some
of the shots I took with Larry in the very near future. I just need to
take care of a little business first, but once I have a good start on
it, I'll get to work on the pleasure photos.

Many thanks, Larry! You were a kind, generous, and helpful host throughout!

from across the lagoon with my 300/2.8 adaptall and its 2x TC. Just as the

lot closer, and in the fading light, I'd do better with the 300/2.8 from 100

I wasn't having tremendously good luck, I even tried the pop-up flash on the

I've learned that for birding, especially late in the day, a monopod just isn't

OT using a 12" powerbook for showing photos

2011-03-30 Thread Larry Colen
If I had unlimited funds, I'd get one of the new notepads just for showing off
my photos. Sometimes I have at least a tenuous grasp on reality, so I'm not
going to get one, at least not this week. My 12" iPod, aka my G4 power book,
might actually do well for showing photos, and would be easier to carry than a
stack of albums.

What software options are there for showing photos on an older mac? I abhor
iPhoto, though it may work for this purpose, the bar isn't very high for there
to be something better.

I assume you mean the HTML/Javascript created by LR and view it in a web
browser? Good luck getting LR itself to work on a 1GHz PowerPC Mac.
Pretty sure LR is Intel Mac only.

I've tried to display photos to people on my 2003 vintage 12"
PowerBook. I just loaded it up with JPEGs and used Preview to step
through them. Unfortunately, the PB's TN display with its low contrast
and poor viewing angles made that less than stellar. In fact one image
came out almost completely black no matter how it was viewed. But it
*can* work.

I can highly recommend using an iPad for this though. It has a builtin
image gallery (it can be set into rotating picture frame mode if you
like) and it has a gorgeous IPS display. Photos on that device look
great. You should be able to pick up a 1st gen iPad for cheap since the
iPad 2's are in great demand.

LR2 ran fine on a 1-1.6 Ghz PowerBook G4s. Not fast, of course, but
quite usably.

You could do worse than just selecting them all in Finder then opening
them in Preview, which isn't exactly a slideshow but does allow you to
click through the pictures. And it's fast. -T

Re: OT using a 12" powerbook for showing photos

2011-03-30 Thread eckinator
I received a mail this evening that I can pick up my iPad 2 WiFi & 3G
64 GB tomorrow morning. They had me over a barrel because I needed one
Monday latest so they sold me the biggest one saying it is the only
one I can have. Had to buy it for my business. I doubt it will see
much use and it upsets me that I have no money to replace my dying
K10D but need to buy that thing which sure is nice but adds no
productivity whatsoever to my life.

oh well, might as well try to get some mileage out of it now that I
have it. and some time in winter I will be required to buy an Android
Honeycomb tablet. I guess that means no camera replacement for a while
yet to come...

Sure, but once downloaded on an Intel Mac, you should be able to copy
Keynote over to the PowerBook and run it. *Unless* of course the App
Store delivers a thin Intel-only binary. That wouldn't surprise me either.

Larry, I use my iBook which is close to your power book, I think, and
use it for just this purpose, showing photos to clients.
I just use the slideshow in Preview.
