I prefer this one.

I'd have liked to have seen some more motion of the propeller and I
notice that the camera chose 1/6400 sec for the exposure. I wonder how
slow the shutter speed would have to be to get propeller motion while
still being able to pan for sharpness of the plane itself. I had a
similar issue with the helicopter photos I posted about a year ago.
Seems difficult!

Well, you know that's what they're doing but for the viewer, it looks as
if he's more interested in communicating with someone other than the
young lady.

Good photo, though and the composition in excellent with the couple

Most certainly, Brian. My remark was mostly in reply to Bob's sentiment

Re: PESO: Duster Pano

2011-05-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
A nice shot. The trail gives it action, but like Brian said, it would be nice
to see some motion blur on the prop. You could create the blur in PS, but you'd
have to apply motion blur to each blade individually, changing the angle as you
went. Radial blur might make the job easier if you first selected or masked the
prop.

The branch touching the right ear of the deer on the back is a
distraction. It is a very fine picture 'cause it shows the interaction
between the animals, but I think that more takes would have been
necessary. Personally I also often miss things such as these, but with

spot them on the fly.

Thanks for looking, Brian. I'm strictly guessing, but I suspect any speed near

The Samsung NX's are pretty similar in feature set and have the K20D
sensor. The Sony NEX's lack the EVF but have a much better sensor than
any of the other mirrorless cameras. There should be a NEX with an EVF
announced in late july (higher-end body), possibly with the K-5
sensor, possibly with a new higher-resolution sensor expected to also
show up in the Sony A77 and Nikon D400.

Jack, Daniel, David, Paul and Boris RE: PESO: Rainy Weekend

2011-05-15 Thread Jeffery Johnson
Jack: I used my Pentax K-R, DA L 55-300mm, DA L 18-55mm on the Radnor Lake
captures and Pentax K-R with the SMC Pentax 1:1.4/50 + Vivitar Close-Up
Lenses for the captures of the Cicadas.

Daniel: Thank You...

David: Thanks and I will keep the following in mind "bad weather makes for
good photos". Although when there is rain off and on again today and later
this evening a steadier amount not sure what I will capture today.

Paul: I agree with you but I noticed for the two shots I took of them
together I went more toward the right of them. Will keep a lot of the
comments in mind for our next trip to Radnor Lake and this time perhaps we
will get up and go really early in the morning.

Boris: Thanks for being honest. It was a nice day at the Lake and watching
the deer interact but when we came across these two it was rather late in
the day and we were for the most part in the deeper part of the woods. The
light source was limiting due to the darker part of the woods as we
attempted to capture them interacting. Luckily they seem rather use to us
humans so are not bothered that we are using these odd machines to take
their pictures. There was a bench that we sat down and watched and took
pictures of these two.

Re: PESO: Duster Pano

2011-05-15 Thread Jack Davis
Appreciated remarks, Paul. This was strictly an experiment using Frame-Rate(2)
continuous drive. Had been reading some recommendation in the June issue of
Outdoor Photographer. As we all know, a high shutter speed is basic in shooting
BIF. Obviously, with some subjects, appropriate movement can add to the affect.
I'd been setting AF-C to focus priority and experienced a consistent
intermittent frame rate with less than expected image detail. I shoot in RAW
mode, but realize jpeg will allow a faster frame rate if needed.
This shot was a result of my checking out the continuous drive to find if I
could improve the captured image detail. I'm not happy with the detail in this
image, nor any other in the series. I am, however, very impressed by the
extreme detail revealed in 'normal' shooting.
Do you agree with my assessment of the detail in this image, Paul?
Anyone...anyone? ;)

Re: Back yard wildlife

2011-05-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
We have fox in our neighborhood. I have noticed that the squirrel and
rabbit populations are no longer out of control. That coyote in
Paul's image is an entirely different matter. Those critters can be
very dangerous to pets, children and even adults.

When we were in Yellowstone, the Rangers reported that the coyote
problem virtually disappears after wolves were reintroduce into the
park. Now, the coyotes have been reduced in number, and are far less
apparent and aggressive than before the wolves returned.

I dropped in on a Knights of Columbus fund-raising book sale yesterday.
Bought a few fiction paperbacks and such, but I acquired a real gem:
Photographing The World Around You, A Visual Design Workshop by Freeman
Patterson. I've read a few chapters and it's already inspiring me to try
some ideas.

Fifty cents -- can't beat it. :-)

Re: 50 cent enablement

2011-05-15 Thread Adam Maas
Patterson's work mostly predates ubiquitous video, his books were
mostly written from the 70's through early 90's.

Interesting to note that based on that video he's still shooting film.
Patterson is known for almost never discussing gear and specifically
never mentioning what gear he uses beyond basics like 'a macro lens'
or 'a wide angle lens'. The brief bit with him out shooting shows that
he's using a Minolta Maxxum 7 (which has a status LCD on the back,
like a DSLR, one of many ideas Minolta pioneered in the AF era).

-Adam
Who currently shoots with a pair of Maxxum 7's.

The detail looks good at web size, although the focal point appears to be
behind the front of the wing -- perhaps somewhere on the cabin. The front of

Today was a rather gloomy day with a chance of rain off and on so we didn't
go too far away from home to be able to get any good captures. Really wanted
to make it to the zoo this weekend but rain and guess what next weekend
there is supposed to be more rain.

Shutter speed around 1/100 - 1/125 gets a realistic looking blur in the
prop (or rotor).

Yes it can still be developed. Whether the images are worth making your
wife mad is a question only you can answer.

Exposed roll or un-exposed roll?

If it's un-exposed, best let her keep her curio and you pick up a new

Back again

2011-05-15 Thread Stan Halpin
The last couple of weeks have been busy and I have only sporadically tracked
the PDML. My excuses include: lack of time, slow or non-existent internet
connection, and, occasionally, higher priority things to attend to. This last
week I did another round-trip from Michigan to KC, brought back what should be
the final trailer-load of stuff from the house there. Once the house sells,
everything else should make it here in one mid-size truck. Along the way I
spent a couple of mornings at the Squaw Creek Wildlife Preserve harassing birds
there. The week before Meg and I went to Michigan's Upper Peninsula (the U.P.
as it is commonly known.) We passed through Sault Ste. Marie, including a view
of a large freighter going through the locks, then on to Whitefish Point. This
is migration time of year, and we saw literally hundreds of hawks, many loons,
and other interesting critters. Plus we had some side trips to local sights
like the Tahquamenon Falls.

But now I am back home for a month or two, final papers have been read, grades
have been assigned, photos have been downloaded and initial sorts & edits made.
I will be slowly catching up on some of the PDML discussions of the last few
weeks and preparing a few GESO's for your enlightened commentary.

That's striking. I'd consider cropping the top right corner back a

I am curious Jim - which features would you expect to take advantage of? I did
just a quick look, it seems that you can do some kewl stuff, but on a
day-to-day basis, which features only available there would change the way you
photograph or the quality of the images?

Yeah - that's the one I saw. Got a chuckle out of it and, quite apart
from the humour, it's a well composed and colourful photo.

I sometimes wonder how they choose 'Image of the day'. I'm guessing
that it's an automated process that selects an image randomly. Some of
the ones I've seen are pretty ordinary (unlike yours, I hasten to add!)
and I can't imaging that they've been chosen by a real person.

I had a similar thought, but I wonder who the target audience is? I would guess
it is the bride or her mother that is making the purchase decisions, and they
are the ones the photographer is catering to. And so you have this mix of
shoe-fetish and domination scenes . . .

Well, I certainly don't think my image was the best submitted that
day. There must have been one accepted for the Premium Collection or
at least one a bit more artistic. I don't know whether it is random

A friend of mine is in the market for a new camera. He was looking at
the Nikon 7000, but I suggested he at least take a lok at the alternatives
(He's not really tied in to any system; his current camera is a fairly
old EOS digital Rebel with the kit lens, and he's not that fond of it).
He tried the NEX, and said it's basically unusable; if you have review
turned on, the camera goes unresponsive for more than a second after
taking a shot. If his report is correct, it looks like a classic case
of poor design, and getting multi-tasking priorities reversed; taking
the next shot shouldn't have to wait until the review image of the
previous shot is ready!

In fact this was the person who told me about the G3; he saw it being
advertised (after he'd tried the NEX), and asked my advice.

That is a timeless image, and a very fine one.

That's a good angle and lighting. I also like how the branched seem

Re: Peso Hockey stick

Reminds me of a goaltender we had in high school. With him in net,
the door was always open.

An APS-C sensor doesn't buy you much, really. I tend to crop to square
or 3:4 anyway, at which point you're only gaining about 3mm of sensor
area both horizontal and vertical. A K-mount adapter is easily
available but no AF or iris control.

It seems a nice camera and the new sensor should be pretty good ...
might be on par or better than the Sonys. But I think Panasonic is
moving towards a market target that doesn't include me with the touch
screen ergonomics. While the touch screen is useful and convenient in
some circumstances, it doesn't fit my photographic methods very well.
I am more disposed to a reasonable arrangement of discrete controls
and the ability to customize them to my shooting needs - it simply
works better for me, which is why I was attracted to the E-5 (one of
the more configurable/customizable cameras on the market) and the
Ricoh GXR.

Thanks Jim!

I'm seriously both surprised and delighted with the GXR ... It was
without a doubt a "dark horse" pick, but it is amazingly competent.
The control ergonomics are superb and the A12 28mm is excellent.

I have come to the conclusion that I also need the A12 50mm ... 28 is
a bit too wide a good bit of the time for me, wish there was the
equivalent A12 40mm camera module available. No real matter there ...
a good normal that also has macro capability is a good lens. I've
already got the GXR's VF-2 EVF (very nice quality) but found an old
Leica 5cm brightline finder too because I like working with the
optical viewfinder so much.

It's nice to have a true compact available again. It's been years
since I had one that worked as well as this, the last compact camera I
had that did the job right is my Rollei 35S.
