I am truly sorry, and never an offence meant. The type of motion blur - aircraft propellers, wheels of a moving car or a leaping leopard - mentioned by you, is perfectly natural and adds to the beauty of a photograph. All I mentioned was that in quite a few lovely waterfall shots, water shows up as frozen gas - an extreme example of HDR or other photo techniques. I am absolutely not opposed to PP as long as it is aesthetic, as I myself use Photoshop CS5 quite often. And certainly one posts photos on this great site for feedback, which I did out of no malice whatsoever. PDML been a great learning experience for me. Hope it has been for you too. While I think that overly blurred water is an effect that is way over used, there are times where that is what you're going to get, and this was one of them. And, to me, it works. I don't know what the geographic limitations you were working under were. I think that the composition of the background is just about perfect, but would prefer it if the foreground ere shifted a bit to the right. It's hard to tell scale with that wide of a lens, but I suspect that with the camera a meter or so to the left the overly prominent bush on the right would be mostly out of the frame. However, there's a really good chance that moving the camera a meter or so to the left would put it in the middle of the stream. I think I've seen you do light painting with your maglight before. Why not use a speedlight? Focus peaking highlights the edges of the scene in the local areas where contrast is at its peak. Unlike with a focus confirmation light on a DSLR, with a fixed position array of AF focus sensors, focus peaking operates on the actual image being captured by the sensor. When you turn it on, you can literally see the focus plane shift based on where the peak contrasts are located in the image. The GXR with firmware 1.40 (not limited to just the A12 Camera Mount) supports two modes: mode 1 retains the natural full color image in the viewfinder, illuminating edges with highlights as focus is moved. Mode 2 does the edge illumination but also does a high pass filter on the image, which essentially means you see ONLY the contrasty edges. Coupled with the focus magnification function (which allows you to see high resolution 2x, 4x and 8x magnifications of the field of view), you can pinpoint critical focus to an arbitrary level of precision with all kinds of scenes and lenses, even with lenses stopped down to f/11 or f/16 and deep depth of field. These are focusing tools impossible in an optical reflex finder. They require fast, high-resolution image processing of the incoming image stream. Focus aids like this have been a high-end feature on professional video cameras for a bit ... Seeing it come into the still camera world is great. I experimented with the GXR + A12 Camera Mount, experiencing this feature with manual focus lenses, a week ago. Thanks for the clarification, but is this any different from (or better than) the focus confirmation indicator that we get with DSLRs when used with manual lenses? It is thrilling to see how easy and precise TTL manual focus can become when using it. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: lighting idea, would it work?
From: Darren Addy This was done over 30 years ago (before green screen) in a lot of portrait studios with a special screen and projector. The screen was different from the usual as it was made up of thousands to tiny black glass balls that would reflect the projected light straight back at the camera (which had to be perfectly aligned with the projector and the perfectly perpendicular screen. The camera actually shot through a beam-splitter and the projector (aimed at the ceiling) bounced 90 degrees off the beam splitter to the screen. Scene Machine was one brand: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scene-Machine-Virtual-Backgrounds-/260834241515 If not perfectly aligned you would get a dark line around at least part of your subject. The main problem was that the studio lighting would rarely match the lighting on the background image and so would look unrealistic to the eye (which is quite good at detecting when something is not quite right). It shares this problem with green screen backgrounds of today. It was a fad that really didn't last too long (except that I see that Scene Machine is still in business, so somebody must still be buying). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOGP4skmw_M Louise et Joseph Simone were presenters at the 2011 PPNC convention. Background extraction tools in Ps are quite finicky to use. But I've played with a new feature in CS5 that helps with this: the Auto Edge Detect tool in Refine Selection is very smart. It does a great job with texture, hair, etc. I've been able to lift a flower off a background, use Content Aware Fill to create plausible new background where the flower was, then lens-blur the background and superimpose the flower back. Results were just about perfect. Christine, please thank your dad for me for his dedication and sacrifices made during his service duty. I need to plug knee replacements here, given that he's seen a doctor about knee issues. I had 2 total knee replacements a few years back and it has made all the difference for me. Arthritis issues with the knees finally got to where the pain became very bad, even with pills rubs. It finally got to where I had to do something about it. I had them done on separate occasions and would recommend the same for anyone. The pain/recovery from the operations was well worth it as I am totally without pain/issues. I believe with out the replacements, I'd probably be in a wheel chair. On 8 September 2011 01:30, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com wrote: These work as well as or better with digital than they did with film. They work just the same with either kind of capture. It's an optical process so the light rays getting to the film or sensor are just the same no matter what recording medium they find. There's less time required in post processing than with green screen getting the lighting setup right is a lot less fussy than with green screen - at least based on my experience shooting green screen it is. You'd be assuming, then, that front projection is easy to work with, compared to green screen shooting. While green screen has its difficulties, I'd take it any day over front projection. Front projection is an extremely inflexible setup. The camera and projector are locked together and in turn are fixed in relationship to the background screen. The least misalignment gives a cartoonish dark outline to the subject. Imagine shooting portraits under those conditions. The whole operation is extremely programmed and rather like cranking out sausages from a sausage machine. Change the background scene? Sure, that's the Raison d'être of front projection. Change the lighting? A little, but be very careful. Change the camera position in any way, no matter how little? Forget about it. Not much room for spontaneity there, then. Might as well get a job assembling iPhones in a Chinese factory. Not much good for difficult subjects like wriggly children and animals and such. And you'd better keep a good stock of adjustable stools in your studio to cater for varying sized sitters in group shots, and get accustomed to constant re-adjustment of them. Because remember. you can't move or tilt the camera to compensate for common variables in everyday portraiture. Have fun! Anyway, what problems did green screen give you? If light and shadows from the subject lighting contaminated the background, then your studio was too short and the background too close. If you forced the lights to do double-duty, lighting up the subject AND the background, then that's a problem too, unless the lights have huge coverage. It's best to have dedicated background lights. If you're shooting outdoors then simply keep the green screen well away from the subject's shadows. Follow this advice and you'd get a good even green, easy to select in post-editing. regards, Anthony Of what use is lens and light to those who lack in mind and sight (Anon) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I have yet to try green screen, though it's on my to-do list. I'd expect that success with it is dependent on lighting the green screen very, *very* evenly. I would definitely try green screen before this projection technology. For me, a regular painted background is preferable to either of them. Shop around. I found a good quality 10'x20' on sale for $50.00 Or use out of doors locations where you can throw the background pleasingly out of focus. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Two of my favourite ripostes come from the world of entertainment. Claire Booth Luce and Dorothy Parker approached a doorway together. Luce stepped back to let Parker go through first, saying, Age before beauty. Parker sailed through the doorway replying, Pearls before swine. Sir Lawrence Olivier watched with amusement as Dustin Hoffman summoned up all of his Method, agonizingly getting into character for a dramatic scene on the set of Marathon Man. At last he said, Why don't you just act, dear boy? But my favourite put down was was self administered. Michael Curtiz, while directing The Charge of the Light Brigade, called for riderless horses to be let wander across the scene, saying, Bring on the empty horses. Errol Flynn and David Niven cracked up laughing at his awkward English. Curtiz responded, You people think I know f*** nothing, but I tell you, I know f***all! regards, Anthony Of what use is lens and light to those who lack in mind and sight (Anon) On 8 September 2011 05:11, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: They just don't insult anymore like these from the good old days ...
