Just too cluttered Dan I'm afraid. Too much going on in the
background. Perhaps a close-up with OOF trees in the background would
have achieved something - there's character in them there faces...

Excellent shot Christine. I like the composition and the splash of red

Sorry I couldn't make it. Friday my foot went nasty, Friday night and
Saturday the little cough I had picked up on a cold ferry ride across
the Irish Sea blossomed into a short lived head cold. Saturday night
was miserable. Today it abated, tonight I feel almost normal again.

Oh well. At least I got my desk cleared off... ! Next time!

Christine - Like the pix and you've cropped it well. Congrats on the
iPad. I got one as a b-day gift a couple weeks ago and am liking it a
lot. I really wanted a tablet and I think the iPad is the best choice -
at least for the foreseeable future.

The calendar is great in conjunction with the "cloud" and the iPhone.
Make an entry on one device at it auto syncs with the cloud and the
other device. Be sure to get the camera adapter so you can copy your
images right from the SD card to the iPad.

Welcome to the club Christine. I've had mine for a month, and am just getting
around to making things work the way I want them to. Many calls to Apple. Buy
the Applecare if not already. Two years of help and complaints is worth the $62
(IIRC) charge. Another side benefit is the iPad2 placement in usefulness drags
much of your other Applecare expired hardware and software back into the
picture. Just yesterday I got help with Aperture, iTunes, OS-X, and WiFi specs.
 (USB is quicker for syncing)

The K-x is a surprisingly good machine, especially for the cost. Rather than a
stormtrooper, get a pirate, because the K-Arrr is a little bit better in just

Re: Aperture Size Question

2011-10-30 Thread David Parsons
It also makes the notation of aperture = f/x much more meaningful.

f is your focal length and x is your diameter fraction.

It's why you see apertures listed as f/2 or f/64 and etc. It's
appropriated from a formula.

The workflow concept is a little off for the context of using Lightroom.

As BobW put it, you would import them (which can imply also moving to
the HD/file system location of your choice) and then export them as
JPEGs, but in truth there's little reason to do this en masse like
that.

Normally, you just import the raw files into Lightroom and fiddle with
them any way you wish from there, then output to JPEG what you want as
a finished JPEG file for some use outside of Lightroom. Why throw away
60% of the data and then fiddle with the files? Use all of the data to
finish the rendering, then output them for use in the compressed JPEG
format.

That's doing it the hard way ...

You don't need to calculate area, square any values, etc.

F-stop is simply the ratio between aperture diameter and focal length.
So the same plate (with, by definition, the same diameter aperture)
will have f-stops that differ by a factor of X (two, in your case) when
used with lenses that have focal lengths that differ by a factor of X.

I used the Pentax A080C ringlight extensively in my Auto Forensic work and
eventually used it along with a handheld slave flash to achieve a sense of

Biggest problem I have with this rig is that illuminates a ring of
light, with the center of the images substantially darker. More so the
closer the subject is to the lens.

I've had several ring-lights, Pentax, and they are designed to light a
fairly near frame evenly. I had trouble in Costa Rica photographing
insects and frogs at night with the ring-light. Little modeling of the
subjects as the light was too even. Ended up using two small flashes on
flexible arms, which allowed me to control the direction light came
from, and differentiate between Main& Fill. Downside to that was having
to use my headlamp for focusing as well as finding subjects in the first
place.

I'd love to see a shot of you down on the ground with your headlamp on
and holding this crazy arrangement of lights! :-)

You will not. I was concentrating on flora and fauna that habitated
between my knees and my hair, in close proximity, but not touching, thank
you. Could have though. Weighed 100 pounds less then. And this was a
backpacking for two weeks trip. No one helped me carry what was
essentially TWO backpacks worth of gear either.

Most ring-lights have modeling lights built in. After I got home, I
re-rigged the flash on arms to be triggered by the flash of the
ring-light using one of those little triggering sensors (can't think of
the name - duh) which gave me the best of both worlds. Never got back to
CR, or anywhere else tropical, unless you count Cabo. It's better for
sunrises and sunsets, no flash needed.

The Pentax AF160FC gives you the ability to control the balance between
two halves of the ring: 50/50, 66/33 or 100% one side or the other so you
can get some more definition in the subject. The ring also rotates so you
can place your light ratio in any radial orientation. *And* there's a
modeling light.

The AF540 and AF360 flashes (most likely other Pentax flashes?) can be
programmed to slave flash off of any other flash including, of course, a
ring light.

I like my AF160, but they're wickedly expensive so not for everybody.

I still have the AF-140, which has the same features. I was shooting
transparencies, so had zero feedback on how the images were doing in the
film other than experience. Got about 30 money keepers from about 1200
exposures. Hey, I'm not a Nat Geo photog!

Thomas Tallis was a local boy from Greenwich and the parish church, St.
Alfege, often has free concerts of his music, often given by students of
Trinity College of Music, which is in the old Royal Naval College here. I'll
see if anything's on.

In fact, the world's largest early music festival is taking place here in
Greenwich in less than 2 weeks' time - 11-13th Nov. It seems to be largely
about instruments, but there are also recitals.

St. Martin in the Fields, next to the National Gallery, often has concerts
on - I think (not sure) that they specialise in early music.

These wacky funsters give concerts in some of the nicest churches in London
- Wren, Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh etc.

And of course there are all the usual venues for classical music: Royal
Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, ...

So there's plenty going on just before you get here, and just after you've
left...

Thanks for this Mike.

So they're still made - cool. These were on an unrestored car that
looked as old as that tyre. For some reason I photographed the tyre
but not the car...

Didn't think of flipping it. You're right - there's nothing in the
background that would prove objectionable to a flip. I'll play later.

Well, I've just finished watching a doco on BBC1 about the exhibition, so
that will probably at least triple the number of people who come to see it.
It is probably a once in a lifetime chance to see all these pictures in one
place, but I don't think it will be the most relaxing of experiences.

If you've ever seen the Mona Lisa in the Louvre you'll understand something
of the crowds that this sort of thing can attract. This is what they look
like:

However, in the gallery behind them, through the entrance you can see in the
centre of the photo, there are several other Leonardos which practically
nobody stops to look at, they're so caught up in the headlong rush to stand
in front of the famous one. You can spend as long as you like in front of
them, and get close enough to touch them if you were minded too. I expect if
they are in the London exhibition they will attract the sort of crowds they
haven't seen for decades. Perhaps even some Parisians will come and see
them.

There are however plenty of interesting and uncrowded things to see and do
other than markets and block-buster exhibitions. What sort of thing would be
of interest?

Depending on how it is mounted, you could read it better just before you were
run over, or just afterward.

Or the photographer could have walked around to the other side to take the
picture.

Irregardless, it left an impression in the snow or mud that was readable.

Except for a brief few months in 1996, none of my film cameras had any

the new form had it filled in from the EXIF in the istD -

I don't think they really want a lot of stuff uploaded taken with

Thanks - I just checked Wikipedia and got the equation for the area of
an f-stop: Area = PI x (focal length / f-stop)^2. Comparing 50mm and
100mm confirms that the size of a 100mm f-stop is the same as the f-stop
two stops lower in number on a 50mm. So, the Muse aperture rings should
work...

A good number of film cameras from the later days have scene modes. I
ignore them.

ann the dumbfounded

Heck, just make stuff up, how about an LX with a SMC Pentax 300mm f1,8
lens, set to evaluative pattern metering, and hyper program.

Seems like most of that would be captured in the meta-data if you're
shooting digital. You should only have to enter it if you're
submitting film scans.

Plus, I think it would be pretty easy for them to institute a filter
to eliminate the ridiculous.

LX = Film, and they're asking stupid questions. A filter that filled
out the form with reasonable answers if you picked a film camera on the
list would be fine, even welcome. I just like giving stupid answers to
stupid questions.

So for example pick "LX" .

Picture mode should automatically say NA.

Exposure mode should default to something like unknown with options for
manual and aperture priority.

Exposure pattern should default to center weighted with maybe the option
of none if you used a hand held meter.

There is no exif data to read, but Pentax knows the capabilities of
their film cameras, (If they don't they can always look them up on Boz's
site), so a reasonable default value should always be available for each
camera selected.

It's a nice little toy, that's for sure. I haven't spent much time with
it yet, but a few things.
It's a very nice camera to work with. It's very small, but it still has
good ergonomics. As expected, high ISO performance isn't it's strong
suit, but up to ISO 800 it's pretty good, and at base ISO in good light,
there is nothing wrong with it.
I only have the prime kit lens, which is very sharp, and seems
relatively free from flare, though it certainly isn't up to the standard
of the bigger SLR lenses.
Where it really seems to excel is video. It's really easy to hold
steady, has manual control, including focus and scales nicely to my HDTV.
I suspect that all things considered it will be a flop in the
marketplace, simply because people can't get past the small sensor and
the big price.
The small sensor does hobble it somewhat, the big price isn't something
a person would understand until they've actually held one of the things
and realized that it's built like a much more serious camera than it's
size belies.
Nothing feels cheap about it, but this is something that would be lost
on most users who place their criteria elsewhere.

If I take pictures of anything other than my dog, I'll post them.

It hasn't opened yet. I'd expect it to be extremely busy indeed, especially
at weekends. The blockbuster exhibitions are often best seen on late Friday
evenings - it's open until 10pm, so getting there at about 7.30 - 8pm should
give plenty of time to see it with the least people. At other times, even
with timed tickets, you tend to be pushed around the exhibition by the
crowds.

There's always something. Borough Market is a nice place to meet of chilly a
morning for a late-ish breakfast, photo-shoot and meander around. Most of
the markets are quite interesting - Smithfield, Brick Lane, Weymouth Street,
Camden Lock, Portobello - all worth a visit. Or you could tour the Olympic
site by bicycle along the canal towpaths (East London has more canals than
Venice. Bit short on Doges, though. Although I suppose there is the Isle Of
Doges, or is that a misprint?).

The days, of course, are very short - the clocks went back this morning, so
you don't get much light, but what you do get is usually very nice for
photography.

Aperture Size Question

2011-10-30 Thread Mark C
I was working with the trusty Pentax 6x7 today and put on the Lensbaby
3G that I bought for it a while back. The lens baby uses a set of
apertures that are just steel metal rings held in place by magnets in
the lens. To my horror, I was unable to find the aperture kit anywhere
in the bag. It appears to be lost for good. All I have is the 5.6, which
was in the lens. At home, I tried one of the aperture rings from my
Pentax K Lensbaby Muse. The f2.8 ring for the Muse is exactly the same
size as the f5.6 ring for 3G. The Muse is a 50mm focal length, the 3G is
100mm.

So - am I correct in assuming that is the Muse f2.8 ring is the same
size as the 3G f5.6 ring, the two stop differential applies to other
aperture rings? So Muse f4 = 3G f8, Muse f5.6 = 3G f11, etc... I assume
that they logically would have to be consistent, but maybe the world is
not so orderly...

The 3G for medium format has been discontinued for some time but
replacement rings for the Muse are available. I ordered a set hoping to
relabel them for the 3G, at worst I'll have backup for the Muse.

Thanks -

Mark C.

Check out the category list... my favorite is "Recently added"

Note that the categories in the cautionary prose differ slightly
from the actual checklist.

One good thing.. they added an "unknown" to the list of lenses
for those of us who would like to say..

"Don't remember at all. I had a bunch of lenses with me, and it was
freezing cold and the Yeti just came around the corner, and I was
shooting with film and I didn't have time to take notes,
thankyouverymuch. "

also I don't know how to answer any of the other questions because
I never learned the buzz words for any of these.

Exposure Bias (is this like the film is ISO 64 and I'm shooting at 100?)

Pretty much.

Exposure program: Whatever is in the camera ?

Shutter preferred, aperture preferred, program, manual, there are others
but who cares and who the hell takes notes after a while anyway?

Metering Mode : like Center weighted ?

Yea, my MZ and ZX cameras have Center Weighted, Spot and Pattern.

Scene capture type: huh? Is that something perculiar to digital?

A good number of film cameras from the later days have scene modes. I
ignore them.

ann the dumbfounded

Heck, just make stuff up, how about an LX with a SMC Pentax 300mm f1,8
lens, set to evaluative pattern metering, and hyper program.

Seems like most of that would be captured in the meta-data if you're
shooting digital. You should only have to enter it if you're submitting
film scans.

Plus, I think it would be pretty easy for them to institute a filter to
eliminate the ridiculous.

I know that was the case with the old gallery, but I haven't seen that
limitation mentioned on the 'new' gallery. All we're seeing at the
moment is a note saying "Could not add this photo to the gallery", with
no explanation as to the reason.

I haven't added 10 images since the gallery was re-launched.

Has Pentax actually made a public announcement about the re-launch of
the new PPG?

I thought someone was poking around and found it & passed the word along
to the list. It may be that it's not yet ready for prime time; they're
not finished with it yet.

No, I haven't heard any. Wasn't there supposed to be a, rumored,
announcement of a second mirror less system, (with rumored K mount

Ricewhine's blog where he mentions that the Q isn't doing so well in
sales in Japan. I'm just wondering if that might have derailed a more
serious device as well.

I'd guess that the respective camera divisions of Ricoh and Pentax are
in the process of rationalising their product lines and that may be
delaying the Pentax large sensor mirrorless. Ricoh undoubtedly wants to
develop its GXR further and wouldn't want any Pentax offering to draw
sales away. I'm hoping that the large sensor Pentax mirrorless system
comes in at a price point similar to the K-r, then I might be able to
put my old Konica Hexanon lenses to good use occasionally.

How busy is the Leonardo exhibit? They're recommending you buy tickets

Re: LR Question

2011-10-30 Thread Bob Sullivan
Steve,

Step 1: IMPORT the pix into the Lightroom catalogue.
(I automatically have them all converted to DNG format.)
Step 2: use some pre-sets adjustments
(Paul Sorenson introduced me to David Ziser doing this on wedding photos.)
Step3: EXPORT the pix to the file you want.
(Export opens a window of choices on size, naming, location,
jpeg-tiff-PSD-etc.)

Others are more experienced at this than I am, but it's easy and all
in one place.

Regards, Bob S.

as far as I can see, you have to do it in 2 steps - Import followed by
Export.

On the Import dialog, there is a panel called Apply During Import which you
can use to apply Develop settings and Metadata.

Following the Import the Most Recent Import collections contains all your
pictures.

Press the Export button. On the dialog choose your JPEG settings and the
folder you want to put it all in, and press the appropriate tit.

PAW--Week 43--Halloween Maid

2011-10-30 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

Funny thing happened yesterday: it was a free Saturday--hadn't had one of
those in a long time--and I headed downtown to this little Halloween thing for
kids thinking I'd have a major all day photo walk. I was out the door at 10:30
a.m. I took a few snaps at the Halloween gig, then lost interest. Weird
because I knew I had to do my picture of the week. When I made this picture of
the young girl, I had decided I had my PAW, and it was time to move on. I got
lunch and walked around all day, popping in stores, people watching, but no
photography. Oh, maybe a few shots here and there, but nothing really to speak
of. I didn't get home until 7:30 or 8p. Not a lot of photography, but sure
had a nice day. Feet were sore though. Despite not putting a lot of effort
into photography yesterday, I do like this one. Oh, and I upgraded to Lion
last night; so far so good. Much prefer the email changes. Oh, and did I
mention I came home with an iPad2 yesterday? :-)

Cheers, Christine

Be careful you must. Tempting are the high end compacts.

If Debbie wasn't there to hold me back, I 'd probably own a few right
now. These smaller cameras are just so easy to grab and carry around,
and the IQ is sufficient for web-posting. Even better for print
making, especially when you never actually print.

OT: I held a Fuji X10

2011-10-30 Thread Chris Mitchell
Thought some of you might be interested. The first one arrived in our
local Jessops the other day. I've been thinking about this as a
lightweight carry-around camera.

Must say, my initial impressions are good. It feels robust and has all
of the features I'd need - fast zoom lens (f2.0 - 2.8), raw, optical
VF and a nice retro look and feel. And it will fit in a jacket pocket
too (the lens doesn't fully retract so probably not a shirt or hip
pocket).

So far as I can see, image quality is more than adequate. I'll only
want it for web and up to A4 prints, although I reckon it could do
better. It's slightly alarming to see the end of the lens in the
optical VF at widest setting, but that's survivable I'm sure.

They let me take it outside, but obviously not far afield and I just
happened to have an SD card with me. Not very scientific as I didn't
have a lot of time, but here are a few test pics - click to get the
full sized jpeg and scroll to the bottom for Exif data:
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Fuji%20X10/

It's still top of my list; just need to decide whether to become an
early adopter or wait until some of the inevitable bugs have been
ironed out. Also there's no raw support in LR3 yet, so raw+jpeg would
be necessary for the early days.

Pricing in the UK is, as ever, somewhat high. At Jessops it's GBP 539
plus 70 quid for the leather ever-ready case. Argos has it for GBP 439
online only.

Anyone else contemplating it?

I've already put that in my diary. Hopefully we can get a few people

exhibition and the Leonardo - both of which are high on my list. If there
are other things you fancy doing, let us know, and I hope we can also go for

Hopefully Mike will be able to come down. We've been very remiss in not
