Body styling is obviously an important part of how a camera works since you have to hold it to use it. I'm not a fan of retro per se as much as I'm not a fan of modern styling for the sake of being different. Body styling also affects compactness as a dove bar will slide in your pocket whereas something with a big grip is easy to hold. I also like manual controls. OT: largest digital camera in the world
Perhaps of passing interest to the group is the largest digital camera in the world: The Pan-STARRS http://pan-starrs.ifa.hawaii.edu/public/ This is of interest (at least to me) on a couple of levels. 1) it uses over a Gigabyte of pixels in a sensor octagonal sensor array (corners unimportant since the quality of the image circle is lacking there) They call it a 64x64 sensor array, but it is not square. http://pan-starrs.ifa.hawaii.edu/public/design-features/cameras.html 2) it has discovered a comet (way way out) that may be our next Hale-Bopp in 2013. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/06/110622-new-comet-found-2013-visible-space-science/ Not a lot has been written about the comet since its orbit was determined, and it will probably be fine-tuned. However the JPL Horizons prediction is that it will be brightest between March 8-12, 2013 with a magnitude near -0.5. (about the brightness of Arcturus... one of the night sky's guideposts). This will be it's one and only trip through the solar system as it rounds the sun and get's tossed out. Enter C/2011 L4 in the search box of the Small Objects Database browser http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi and then click Orbit Diagram and you can play its orbit forward and backwards (zooming in and out, as necessary). Java required to use the Small Objects Database browser. I've long wondered what would prevent camera manufacturers from using sensor arrays instead of single larger sensors. I imagine that it is possible, but would require so much more from the image processing engine (along with added complexities of bus channel management, writing to card, etc.) that it just isn't worth it on a small scale, when compared to using a single larger sensor. Hey gang. Well i signed up over the holidays. First meeting was two weeks ago just as an intro and to see what level(s) every one was at, and what people wanted ot learn and do. We are a group of eight, the group of seven has already been done, with every one but myself and the president owner of the group as pretty much raw newbies. Every one wanted to learn how to get out of auto mode and use the cameras they have at full potential, which was good to hear. We have a dedicated website hosted by a company that specializes in camera clubs so we can do galleries contests etc. http://www.stouffvillecameraclub.ca/ I will be helping out with the monthly discussions and learning cureves with the other members, so that is kinda exciting., Several walks and hikes are being schedules to practice what Ken and i preach. I don't know if the back was gap free or if software corrections were made. But the results were outstanding. You're sure it was a mosaic of sensors, and not a scanning back? Yes, the shooter told me it was a four-sensor array. This was about a dozen years ago. We were shooting a Dodge Nascar vehicle in a Michigan studio. I've heard of these - that's mostly a mechanical (or cost) limitation. It's all but impossible to make a reasonanbly defect-free sensor above a certain size (although the limiting size changes with the technology). But it is possible to design a sensor so that all the connections, c. are made along one or two edges, with only a very thin gap between the edge of the package and the actual sensor cells on the other two edges. That means you can combine four sensors into a larger composite unit. This is almost as good as a single sensor of the same size, but has the advantage that it's a whole lot cheaper. For example, I think the sensor used in the 645D was initially priced at around $1000. That means you could probably make a four-sensor array of comparable chips for somewhere around $5000. I'd expect a single sensor design to be at least an order of magnitude more expensive, simply due to the mathematics of yield rate in chip manufacture. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The CCDs were arranged as you describe, with the readout edges at the periphery, not between chips, to minimize the gap. The effective gap between chips was about 80 pixels, each pixel being 15 microns. Interesting. I seem to remember from Light Science and Magic that light coming off a conductive surface is never polarized. The effort may prove to be futile for that reason. But there is something about a vertical reflection from a cylinder. It's not the same as polarization, but it is has more directionality than a flat surface and that appears controllable. on 2012-01-24 14:33 P. J. Alling wrote Apple doesn't do any individual work on your project. i don't think that matters; the work Apple does is to create a process which is an alternative to traditional publishers, and the user must decide if the tradeoffs are worth it; if not, skip it — there are plenty of other options — but i predict there will be some very successful authors who may not have done so well with a traditional publisher Apple has almost none of the costs associated with publishing, and reaps more of the profits. i don't see how that would be so; do you have any idea how little most authors make with traditional publishers? they are lucky to get 15% of the sales, and there are all kinds of ifs whens; if they play it well with Apple's system, they'll get 70%, and Apple may be able to give them a bigger market than other self-publishing venues i'm a little cautious about it myself, but the theory is that the iBooks ecosystem will work as well as the App Store has for small app makers (some of whose products are actually more like interactive books); for example the maker of Camera+, a simple camera app, has _netted_ over $5 million in about a year and a half; without the help of the App Store what do you suppose this small company would have earned? and assuming their sales would have been anywhere near as high, how much more would it have cost to manage all parts of the sales process for 6 million units? A good publisher will supply an editor, (human, not software), to shepherd your project to completion.in a form suitable to be published. absolutely true, that's a major difference; and publishers may also decide your book is not worth publishing; editors need not be employed by a publisher to do good work, however, and i can foresee a good market for the services of freelance editors and iBooks packagers; even though Apple has big publishers on board, they are probably quite afraid that their control over the industry will slip; my guess is they realized it will slip whether or not they work with Apple So without help you put your blood sweat and tears into producing a work, which Apple's representatives decide for some reason cannot be sold through their store. So now you've got no ability to try to sell it on your own? for most books, the real work is in authorship; the only thing you can't sell on your own is the widgety stuff, and you can make those other ways if you want to; so write the book, wrap it in iBooks format, and if Apple declines to sell it, you haven't given up the copyright on the text, so package it some other way (even the widgety stuff can be done without Apple's tools, but perhaps it will be more work) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

This isn't a multi-platform tool, it is just for iBooks. If you are wanting to sell an e-book nowadays you have to reformat for multiple file formats and then navigate the submission processes for the various platforms which is not as straight forward as you might think. Basically, almost all of your work should be done in your favourite text editor (Word or whatever) and then tweaked separately for each different platform. The i-books app sounds like it will allow you to go a lot further than you could on a Kindle for instance. This is Apple's way of fighting back against Amazon's desire for an e-book monopoly, by allowing the author to create works that look much better than those on Amazon, so it is no surprise that they don't allow you to sell the end product outside the i-books store. It isn't a copyright grab, just a restriction on how you use the output of a free product. There is nothing stopping you using some other tool to create the same product and selling it elsewhere. Since you are shooting in manual mode (and I presume RAW), until you get the system dialed in, why not try some shots where you keep cranking up the exposure? I would suggest two variations on expose to the right: 1) simply looking at the histogram, this will probably put the table just under clipping. 2) Expose to the right based on the object and let the table clip. The histogram should be bi-modal. There should be a peak for the table, and one for the object. When you expose to the right, ignore the the bump for the table and just keep increasing your exposure until the object itself is exposed to the right. This, of course, has issues if there are sections of your object that are close in albedo to that of the table. The alternative would be to put your subject on a dark background, do your test shots to expose to the right and set your exposure, then remove the dark background, and let the exposure of the table fall where it may. I do hope that you are keeping a notebook with good notes on your different lighting setups. Once you get things dialed in, you should have some base settings that are very close to perfect, and will probably be good enough for most of your subjects. To me, that's the main advantage. Size isn't an issue. Price is. :-( Brian, don't mistake me for a Q-size fan, which I'm far from being. For a rangefinder-style camera, I'd like a size comparable to the E-P3, or an MX, if you prefer. In fact, I'm still waiting for an MX-D (now possible, by using the mirrorless technology). Assuming that one already owns a medium-size APS DSLR system, I don't see the point of the X-Pro 1 because it does not give noticeable size/weight advantage. Oh, and I can already use all of my lenses on a K-5 ;-) Dario I agree. I was a little excited about the X Pro 1, until I discovered that it is almost the same size as K-5. DagT That was my feeling too, Dag. Although the lack of a grip and pentaprism hump might make it a lot more carryable. I'm now waiting for the CP+ show where Samsung is meant to announce the new NX20. I'm hoping it'll be the size of the NX10, which I find near perfect (size-wise) for a MILC, though I do hate the DSLR shape and much prefer the EVF in the corner, as the NEX-7 and X-Pro 1 have. The K-r has arrived and I'm quite impressed
What a cute little camera. I wasn't aware that it's so much smaller than my K-5. It snuggles in to my hand just like my *istDS used to do. If it weren't for the second thumbwheel, the bigger viewfinder, and the top display, I'd really be tempted to use one instead of the K-5 which still causes cramps in my right hand during intense shooting sessions. Michael seems to be quite impressed, at least by his standards. Unlike myself, he usually has a totally unemotional attitude towards technical equipment. He's spent the whole evening with the manual and testing the video functions. At least I can now send my K-5 for some long overdue service attention and use the K-r as a back-up. Ralf -- Ralf R. Re: first images @ work
You could do all that fiddling and tweaking, or, since this is a budgeted project, you could spring for an incident light meter. (Sekonic L-308S: $199 at BH) 1. place lightmeter on table and arm it. 2. fire flash(es). 3. read meter and set camera accordingly. 4. take one perfectly exposed shot. 5. swap subject part for another part ... go to step 4. If you alter the lighting, go to step 1. Now with all the time you've saved, take more shots of more subjects, or savour a coffee. Since you are doing cutouts, you might consider using green screen techniques. Either paint your background with green chroma-key paint (eg Rosco 5711) or just get a roll of green screen background. You'd have to make sure that none of the green reflects back onto your subjects, so this idea may not work well for you. On Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 5:58 PM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: On 1/24/2012 1:48 PM, Collin Brendemuehl wrote: Believe me, as someone who has magic-wanded out more backgrounds that I care to admit... it works really well SOME of the time. Other times you a messing around with the magic wand sensitivity setting to keep it from grabbing portions of your object. Bruce is correct. Your images are seriously underexposed. The light table should be white. It's the same principle as shooting something on a snow bank. The meter will make the snowbank 18% grey and underexpose the subject. That's what you've got here. You'll save a lot of work in post if you expose correctly. Either get off automatic to manual or use exposure compensation. Also, if you have photoshop you may find that working with levels or curves (to define your white) will save you a lot of time with the magic wand. Trust me, you don't want to rely on the magic wand. Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska I am shooting in Manual mode. Yes, the Magic Wand has been useful. So many circular objects are more easily cut with the oval selection tool. As to the exposure, I only saw that on a couple of shots, obvious on the #3 with the PL. I took it off and have not put it back on. Shots #1 #2, once separated from the background (about 10 seconds of work) displays the detail perfectly for the customer's application. The sense of being underexposed went away with the image on a different background -- pure white. The paper should not be all white, but perhaps white-er than it is. I will be adding some reflectors in the next day. Still, the boss is more than happy with the results achieved. Tomorrow I will put up one of the better, later pics with improved exposure. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

They'll be needing a spelling co-ordinator and you'll be the man for the jib! :-) Seriously, sounds like fun. I know they'll learn a great deal from you. So far so good i'd say. Re: New Pentax EVIL rumor, with specs
eI don't care how good the damned things imaging capabilities are if no one, (relatively speaking), buys it and Pentax Ricoh stops building K mount cameras and lenses. Hasn't Pentax done that already, except the Q is cute as a button. Except for WW I don't think any serious photographer has bought one. Well no one else on this list anyway. Because they're a company willing to take risks on products that don't just appeal to the lowest common denominator, and some of the things they produce are cameras that appeal to you, even if they don't necessarily appeal to Joe Sixpack? As for myself, I don't much care what the camera looks like, I mostly care what the pictures I get from it look like. I already have a camera with a great viewfinder, what I don't have is a camera with a good sensor and live view that works well. If the body works with my lenses, has performance on a par with the K-5, and gives me good functionality with live view (i.e. not two seconds of shutter lag while it changes modes three times), I might actually be interested in it. If it's ugly, I hope I can just push that ugliness over the top and get it in Hello Kitty pink. -- Don't lose heart!
