OT - For people looking for new computers/bargains
Recently, several PDMLers were mentioning that they are in the process of upgrading/buying new computers. So, I thought I'd share some info that might be useful. As of April 2, 2012, Intel started the process of discountinuing P67 Express chipset (ahead of the release of a new/several new chipsets). I suspect this may mean some discounts for that series. I see that currently Dell is running a few specials for XPS 8300 Core i7-2600 3.4GHz 8Gb 1TB HDD computer with or without a ultrasharp monitor. w/o monitor: $750: http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/294164?r1=1 w. 24" U2412M IPS LCD monitor: $1089 http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/294163 w.27" u2711 IPS LCD monitor: $1250: http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/dell-xps-desktop-combo/35070.aspx Not following the Dell sales strategies, I cannot say if the prices might yet come down or not. I am not a big fan of Dell computers (even though they are better then those by some other big computer makers, e.g. such as Acer/Gateway/eMachines), but I am seriously thinking about the latter deal. U2711 sounds like a reasonable display: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2922 I hope this info might be useful to somebody else. I remember as a kid in Montreal (early 60s) when going downtown on a summer Sunday for "window shopping" was a big deal. Men in their suits, women in fancy dresses and hats. (We were in the city for brunch and a Broadway show.) When I was a teen, going into the City was a big deal, and we got all dressed up. Now, people dress as if they were going to a local dog park. In the Broadway theater, in the concert halls, even in the opera, people dress like they would if they were going to play softball in Central Park. I don't see that as a bad thing, but it does take some of the special feeling out of a trip to the City. I was vastly overdressed, as I was wearing a sports jacket, partly because we got on the train right after church, and partly because it was quite breezy, but mostly because I am old fashioned. Thanks, Walt. That was taken on Sunday, a glorious Easter. It was still a little coolish for shorts and no sleeves (I wore a windbreaker all day) but quite a number of people really wanted to enjoy the sun. Today is cool, grey, blustery and a little bit wet. Agreed...not the kind of album one would expect from McCartney, but he does it well. I'm actually listening to it as I write this. The liner notes are a fun read, too. -p On 4/10/2012 2:48 PM, Tom C wrote: I do like it! By the way, his latest album, "Kisses on the Bottom", is surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because it's mainly covers of 30's and 40's tunes. There's one new tune by him, and a reprise of "Baby's Request" from the "Back to the Egg" album. I thought it would be a somewhat boring songbook remake, but it's very entertaining, jazzy, and has a lightness and relaxing quality that makes it very enjoyable. While, I'm sure done tongue-in-cheek, the title comes from the lyrics of the first track, "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter". While Paul does the vocals, Diana Krall does jazz piano, and there's small contributions by Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. Re: Tried google, now I'll try here - setting LR default "Web Template"?
Charles, I am using this workaround (LR3.*, Windows): While under any but "web" tab in LR, choose the collection for which you had the right template set previously. Then choose the "web" tab. Then choose the collection for which you want to use that template. Note that for this to work, the collection should be "web-virgin", i.e. not "exposed" to the "web" tab prior to this operation. Re: Paul McCartney, a cup 'o tea, and a Spotmatic
I do like it! As Sir Paul said, "This is an album you listen to at home after work, with a glass of wine or a cup of tea." Tom C. They're very compact. Aren't those about $60 or so? Probably a good thing to have. The problem in this one wasn't finding something to set the color balance, it's that in lightroom the tint was maxed out at +150. And, yes, in an ideal world, there are probably all sorts of other ways to bring things into balance. I'm not saying that this is the best way to solve the problem, I just thought it was an easy, and clever, solution to the problem, that other people might find helpful. Here's the situation. There's a shot that you want, or are asked to, take. You don't have any time to prepare, fiddle with camera settings, change the lighting etc. You take the picture, and it would be great photo except that in the off balance lighting the people don't look attractive to anyone that doesn't have a fetish people with the skin tones of moldy zombies. The color balance is out of the range for Lightroom to correct just using the basic sliders, but the dynamic range of the K-5 is enough that you could bring it back under control. How do *you* do it? I'd love to see other hints and tricks. I've tried messing with the color sliders and haven't had much luck, but maybe I'm doing it wrong. I think the per channel tone curves of LR4 would help. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The Easter Parade is still there, on 5th Avenue, and people stroll up and down all afternoon displaying colorful and unusual hats and outfits: http://gonyc.about.com/cs/holidays/a/easter.htm It is not as big a deal as it once was, however, and we did not give even a thought of walking a few blocks to take a look. In any event, It was a great day, and folks were enjoying themselves on Broadway, around Rockefeller Center, and in Bryant Park. Thanks for looking. Re: Pentax Oddity
The biggest problem with Powerpoint isn't that it's bad it's that presentations should be viewed as a means to an end, not an end in and of themselves. My, how times have changed ! Growing up in N J - just across from NYC, I remember many an Easter Sunday in the city, with a 'fashion parade' & everyone dressed up, ladies in big colorful hats, tykes in fancy shorts and the gents in suits with colorful ties. To judge by your image its just another day in the 'Apple', not a sign anywhere of dressing up. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: "Daniel J. Right next to it is my #1 for this month - Ed Keeney's Golden Gate.. Decisive moment isn't always people. Just gorgeous and I wish I'd taken it. Then Rick's Bavarian Woods, Paul's "Plastic Land" - good candidate for BW too. I laughed out loud. My one minor quibble with "Nationale" by Ann Sanfedele (that the vertical lines aren't vertical) can be easily overlooked by the brilliant repetition of triangles in the composition. Ad woman's legs, walker's legs, sleeping on bench guy's leg, folded corner of the peeling ad. A terrific B&W street shot. Glad you liked it, Darren I see your pointabout verticals .. I guess if I had taken this recently and put it in photoshop I _might_ have straightened the wall on the left. I meant to write something about it on the caption but hit send too fast.. so here it is: "Taken in April of 1981. I was on a train going in the opposite direction - that is, across the tracks. train had stopped - I only took one frame. I cropped a bit to get some distracting stuff off the edges. Flatbed scan from my 8 x 10 print made 30 years ago. I waited for the guy in the coat to get to that spot - well, waited a couple of seconds.. I had the camera already up to catch the guy lying on the bench juxtaposed with the "dressed to kill" poster. " The image that struck me (at small size) the most, and the one I still have the most questions about (as in "i'm intruigued" is "Don't Go Bananas" by Paul Sorenson. I'd love to know more about how that was made, Paul (and why). . I'd like to know more about that as well - an intersting very commercial shot - my natural loathing of bananas might keep me from wanting it on ly wall tho har! I also like Malcolm's "Wall in the Forest" a lot for a more serious bit of photo journalism. I'd go back there and shoot more if it were near me to find the best possible light. These are just very subjective responses - but all are "wish I'd taken that" in category. Re: Pentax Oddity
A nuclear missile in hands of a Neanderthal is no more than a baseball bat. Powerpoint is misused and abused. There are people who can give good presentations and those who cannot, and one should not blaim Powerpoint for that: it's just a tool. Blaiming Powerpoint for bad presentations is like blaiming Photoshop for overprocessed photographs. I am yet to see the tool that is more suitable (and universal enough) for preparing and delivering visual aids for variety of scientific presentations (note, not the presentations themselves - that's the key difference!). There is plenty of funny and reasonable criticism of misuse of PowerPoint. See, e.g., this one by Don McMillan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpvgfmEU2Ck With all of that, it is curious that the later version of his routine is less effective (IMHO), as it becomes long and somewhat repetitive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbSPPFYxx3o Tufte seems to be interesting and refreshing when you find his books first, but if you get to read several of his books and look into detail, you find that he is repetitive and tiresome. I'll stop here to avoid being that myself. Re: LR3 and color balance
Explain to me this, Larry. Why go to the trouble of taking a fluorescent light, already with a green cast, purposely adding a green gel to it making the scene *very* green, taking shots, then using post-processing to remove all that at least half intentional colour-casting? Just to see if it can be done? :-) Why not simply use straight un-gelled light to begin with? Or if the gel is there, presumably the colour cast is intended, so why not render the scene as the participants observed?
