I read our wedding photographer's contract the other day and she asks that any
guest with a DSLR must shoot at a different angle from her own shots. I don't
know how strict she'd be about enforcing it. She was happy with being
surrounded by relatives with P&S cameras and those are becoming pretty good
these days.

I would guess that the contract is fairly generic so it's likely to be a common
clause around here.

The reason I read the contract was to clarify copyright before thinking about
putting an album online. We're planning to talk to her at some stage because
it's hard for us to take print orders when we show relatives using the iPad. I
figure a pile of 6x4 prints where we can write on the back would be easier as
there's no other way we can uniquely identify each pic (there are a few groups
of similar photos).

We have a similar rule but I don't know if it extends to bikes.

It led to a new problem. People who decide their ringing / beeping phone is so
important that they'll pull over on yellow lines to attend to it, usually
blocking a cycle lane or footpath in the process as well.

That's some pretty impressive stuff from both bodies. I've always been
really impressed with the K100D's IQ, and there's just something
intangible about the images it produces -- a certain subtle quality that
I always felt was absent from my K-x's images. I still haven't been able
to quantify it.

little too far.

Exposure looks a bit different between the two.You can't do a fair
comparison between the two without using the same lens.
That's very true. I guess I wasn't really going for a head-to-head test
at the time, but when I pulled the images off the cards, I was really
pleased with the K100D's images compared to the K20D's, especially given
the disparities between them, both in the glass (zoom at full reach vs.
50mm prime) and the resolution (6Mp vs. 14Mp). So, I couldn't help
making the comparison.

I just really enjoy shooting with both of them.

I've only been to one wedding since I got my DSLR, and I brought my gear. The
first thing I did when I got to the wedding was look for the pro to tell him to
let me know if I was ever in his way. In one of those small world moments, he
was someone I took photography with in Jr. High school.

I sat someplace where I'd have clear line of sight to the ceremony, but
wouldn't be in Mark's way. I managed to get some decent shots over the course
of the day. And since they weren't depending on me, I actually had fun. I
could go for the higher risk, but cool if they turn out, shots.

LR4 question, pick and reject

2012-04-25 Thread Larry Colen
In Lightroom 3, When you copied files into a collection, or a set to be
exported to flickr, facebook etc. All of the pick & reject flags would
disappear, so that a photo that was "picked" in the folder view wouldn't
necessarily be picked in the collection view.

It seems that in LR4 the pick and reject flags are following the photo from
folder, to collection and so forth. Is there anyway to turn this off?

Thanks, Joe.

I mostly just neededa little reassurance that the K100D was as good a
camera as I remembered it being, since the K-x will be out of commission
for a while.

I can't complain.

Re: Wedding photography (or not), + peso...

2012-04-25 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I got married once. It was about (OMG!) 33 years ago. My fiancee
(soon-to-be-wife and now ex-wife) and I both agreed "no photos in the church".
Hey, I may be an atheist (okay, for those hair-splitters among you I'm an
atheistic agnostic) but I ~do~ have a sense of sacred and I just don't think
it's appropriate or respectful to be snapping away in a church during what is
supposed to be, after all, a pious ceremony.

We had a Real Wedding Photographer (who did a great job, btw) who was a bit
miffed, and after some discussion we decided to allow photos (by everyone) in
the church during the signing of the register only.

Hey, we got photos taken before the ceremony, immediately after, at a park
setting during the time between church and reception, then finally at the
reception.

We figured that was enough.

Happily everyone respected our "no photos in the church" request. And we still
got a lovely bunch of wedding photos, which have long outlived the marriage.

;-)

cheers,
frank

bring your dslr?

A good friend of mine got married this weekend... I almost didn't
bring it, but in the end, I threw the k-5 & FA 50 in my purse "just in

It's funny territory, I think. There's a pro on hand to capture the

the pews is almost comical... On the other hand, maybe the dslr seems
a bit much? I mean, you don't want to be Uncle Harry, elbowing the pro

Hmm. Maybe the K-01 (in white, of course) for this type of occasion
would be appropriate. I'll have to see if it fits in an evening

RE: Wedding photography (or not), + peso...

2012-04-25 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
That's an easy one: I bring it.

Mostly for the reception, and as you said, "just in case" but I want one there.

That being said if I had something smaller and very high quality (Fuji X Pro 1?
M9? Hey, I can dream) I might prefer that. A bit less conspicuous than a dslr
might be nice, but I have always gotten nice feedback from the wedding party
and/or guests when I've shared photos of such events afterwards.

Hey, the paid photographer can't be everywhere. As long as no one gets in
his/her way, I don't see a problem.

Geez, I've even had a wedding photog sidle up next to me and say, "Yeah, this
is the shot, thanks!".

Sorry to go on so. To summarize, I vote "bring".

;-)

cheers,
frank

Thanks, Frank.

Actually, despite the performance differences, my K20D has supplanted
the K-x as my primary body -- at least when the light is good. And,
also, I still have the K100D as backup in case disaster (read: idiocy)
strikes again.

As to the cosmos and all, very seldom have I ever regretted having a
positive thought. And, generally speaking, those regrets have always
been ameliorated with positive thoughts. :)

Subject: Good news/bad news

Hi all,

Welp! As the subject line implies, there's good news and bad news to report.

First, the bad news: The potential "hidden damage" to my K-x someone
alluded to in my post wherein I lamented the loss of my A 50/1.7 is no
longer potential, nor hidden. It is quite real and apparent. It seems
the AF/MF switch is jammed in the MF position, but with the AF contact
extended so that the camera is in permanent AF. It still focuses with
either type of lens on it, though you can't manually focus an AF lens
(at least not without risking damage to the lens motor, I'm assuming).
So, the camera is still plenty operable, but obviously needs to be repaired.

Now the good news: I received my replacement A 50/1.7 today, so all is
almost right with the world. I did a little lens swapping with a PDML'er
(who contacted me privately to make the deal, so I'll respect that
privacy by not naming them or giving any details of the swap unless they
care to identify themselves). It was a permanent replacement rather than
the indefinite loan John Francis so kindly and generously offered me, so
I felt compelled to accept the other offer rather than take advantage of
a kindhearted gesture that would have deprived a fellow Pentaxian of a
fine (if underutilized) lens.

So, you take the good with the bad. I'm hoping the repair for the K-x
will be relatively simple and inexpensive. Everything else about the
camera seems to be working just fine, though. And, now that things are
beginning to pick up a little around the workplace, I may be able to
afford the repair sooner rather than later. One can only hope and/or
pray -- depending upon one's personal religious convictions or lack thereof.

Yes. Going to a wedding without a camera just doesn't seem right. For a

idiot who blew the wedding. I got much better pictures, and ended up

I do like the lens, and have been able to get surprisingly sharp shots
even wide-open, and really sharp ones at 2.8 on up to 16. (Oddly enough,
I can't think of a time when I've shot with a narrower aperture than
that.) But for the lack of aperture contacts, I might have used it more
than my 50/1.7.

The passenger window is on the right side of the car in this case, as I

hide behind it and not have to deal with all the standard gooey stuff..
Unless I've promised to be the photographer for them, they expect some
shots as a present from me. Either that or they have paid me to shoot.

That being said, I've ended up enjoying a number of the ones I was paid
to shoot because the bride and groom were offspring of friends.

Most of the time the pro hired to shoot is fine with me shooting too...
and I dont' use flash. But once one of them got rather amusingly

It's funny territory, I think. There's a pro on hand to capture the

a bit much? I mean, you don't want to be Uncle Harry, elbowing the pro

Hmm. Maybe the K-01 (in white, of course) for this type of occasion
would be appropriate. I'll have to see if it fits in an evening

usually buttonhole those types and ask them to put the flash away. I've also
run into a few snappers who wouldn't hesitate to step right in front of me.
They always got a tap on the shoulder and a very direct suggestion in regard to
where they should go.

Fighting with the K-5

2012-04-25 Thread Larry Colen
I was the official photographer at the SF Blues Exchange last weekend. I was
amused to note that two other guys each seemed to spend more time than I did
taking photos. Josh with his new 5D3, and Chris with his 60D. I suspect that
someone talked to Chris at some point at late night on Friday, because he'd
been using flash all night long. At one point I asked him if he had any faster
lenses so that he didn't need to use flash, he replied that he didn't and
continued using the flash for about another 40 minutes, and then I never saw
him use flash again.
I did have one friend comment to me on Saturday that I should market my IR
flash to other dance photographers.

All weekend long I felt like I was fighting with my K-5, rather than just using
it. I suspect that a lot of my problems were with my inexpensive split prism
focusing screen. At least the metering problems. When I put the 18-250 on the
metering flat out didn't work. Even with faster glass, most of the metering
indoors was 0.7-2.0 stops under, and not consistently either. Unfortunately,
the lighting indoors tended to be rather uneven and I blew a lot of photos by
not keeping a better eye on exposure.

Focusing tended to be a problem too. I ended up throwing away a lot of what
would have been great photos because of poor focus. Poor autofocus is
something I probably can't (accurately) blame on the focusing screen. There's
no easy way, however, to see which blown focus shots were done with auto focus
and which with manual focus.

My sigma 20/1.8 did it's usual magic. It seems that most of the photos I got
with it were crap, but when it worked, it was wonderful. My feeling is that
the glass is great, but there is something about the mechanics of it that makes
it tough to focus, even in autofocus. I wonder how it would work with some
sort of SDM motor. On the other hand I have a wonderful lens of the same
speed, that originally had the same AOV as I'm getting with the sigma 20, but
that would require a 24x36 sensor to use with my FA31. I have to admit that I
also blew a lot of photos with the 31 as well.

I think that part of my issue was that since the light was difficult, but for
the most part not impossible (or at least improbable), I didn't give it enough
respect. The only time I pulled my monopod out was when shooting with long
glass outside. It's also possible that a better focusing aid would really
help. It's too bad I cant get something like a laser based cross that I could
project based on where the focus point was selected.

I did get a few good shots this weekend, but they almost seem to have been in
spite of my gear, rather than because of it.

It will also be interesting to see what the other guys got.

If you're curious to see the mass post of snapshots this weekend, and are on
facebook, just look in my profile.
I need to go through those and start culling them down to the few that are not
just snapshots of fun moments for the people there, but which are actually good
photos that someone who wasn't there might want to see.

Yikes. I wonder if that was her standard warning at weddings, or a
request of the bride & groom..? Or of the photographer?

I can see how "everyone's a photographer" might inspire a bride to
want to rein it in a little bit. As she walks down the aisle, instead
of seeing the loving gazes of all her friends & family, she sees a
phalanx of iPhones held up to their faces, as they snap & flash
away... And of course, before the ceremony is over, the images have
been uploaded to facebook & tagged. lol.

But, if the pro is a "Guy With a Rebel", well... then you do what you gotta do.

I may be asked never to bring a camera to another wedding. The only one
I've ever photographed (a couple of months ago as a favor to the bride
and groom, both longtime friends of mine) didn't even survive the
honeymoon and was annulled within a week.

The important thing, though, is that I got back the great old pool cue I
lost on a bet 20 years ago in return for the favor. I almost feel bad
enough to give it back to the groom. *Almost*.

with the sharpness it produces -- I think it may even be just a
smidge sharper than the A50/1.7. Here's one of the few shots I
knocked out late this afternoon -- it's my next door neighbor's
daughter, who happened to be outside playing while I was taking a few
flower shots for my own amusement. I have to say, I'm pretty happy
with the results:

K20D, M 50/2, ISO 100, 1/200 sec, f/3.5(?)

Freckles are one of my weaknesses when it comes to human subjects. I
just find them enchanting.

Nevertheless, this was a bit of a therapeutic shot. I still really
like the lens -- a lot. I just wish it had A contacts. Is the A 50/2
as nice a lens as the M 50/2? I may look into one someday if it is.

Comments, critiques and suggestions are, as always, eagerly solicited.

RE: Wedding photography (or not), + peso...

2012-04-25 Thread John Sessoms

Depends on whether you want to take photos or not.

The main advantage I see for the DSLR (when shooting as a guest) is the
flash doesn't turn on automatically as it does with many P&S cameras.
That could be a factor in some church weddings where they don't allow
flash during the ceremony.

From: Christine Nielsen

Here's a survey question... as an invited guest at a wedding, do you
bring your dslr?

A good friend of mine got married this weekend... I almost didn't
bring it, but in the end, I threw the k-5 & FA 50 in my purse "just in
case" I wanted it later

It's funny territory, I think. There's a pro on hand to capture the
day. Yet, the number of cell phone and p&s cams being held aloft in
the pews is almost comical... On the other hand, maybe the dslr seems
a bit much? I mean, you don't want to be Uncle Harry, elbowing the pro
out of the way to get your shot of the happy couple...

Hmm. Maybe the K-01 (in white, of course) for this type of occasion
would be appropriate. I'll have to see if it fits in an evening
bag...

First, the bad news: The potential "hidden damage" to my K-x someone
alluded to in my post wherein I lamented the loss of my A 50/1.7 is
no longer potential, nor hidden. It is quite real and apparent. It
seems the AF/MF switch is jammed in the MF position, but with the AF
contact extended so that the camera is in permanent AF. It still
focuses with either type of lens on it, though you can't manually
focus an AF lens (at least not without risking damage to the lens
motor, I'm assuming). So, the camera is still plenty operable, but
obviously needs to be repaired.

Now the good news: I received my replacement A 50/1.7 today, so all
is almost right with the world. I did a little lens swapping with a
PDML'er (who contacted me privately to make the deal, so I'll respect
that privacy by not naming them or giving any details of the swap
unless they care to identify themselves). It was a permanent
replacement rather than the indefinite loan John Francis so kindly
and generously offered me, so I felt compelled to accept the other
offer rather than take advantage of a kindhearted gesture that would
have deprived a fellow Pentaxian of a fine (if underutilized) lens.

So, you take the good with the bad. I'm hoping the repair for the K-x
will be relatively simple and inexpensive. Everything else about the
camera seems to be working just fine, though. And, now that things
are beginning to pick up a little around the workplace, I may be able
to afford the repair sooner rather than later. One can only hope
and/or pray -- depending upon one's personal religious convictions or

Walt, very nice, Joe

Hi all,

Having pulled out of my despondency with knowledge that I have a
replacement for my A50/1.7 on the way, I thought I might as well
pull out my original beloved lens, the M 50/2 -- the one I feared
was destroyed when my cat knocked it off the dresser. It still feels
a little weird while focusing -- though, that could be due to the
fact that I'd gotten so used to using the A 50/1.7 & K 50/1.4.

In any event, I took it out into the yard and popped off a few shots

Christine, I agree with every word that Bob said.

When my old colleague got married last fall I sat a couple of rows
back from the front and shot from the pews with my DA* 55. The "pro"
was apparently one of the many Guy With A Rebel sorts and missed much
that I got. And vice-versa of course--he did zillions of posed wedding
party shots that I would never attempt.

At the reception, he had no flash and only slow zooms, so he twiddled
his thumbs while I got a lot of dancing shots by dragging the shutter
and bouncing flash. The MIL's were thrilled I hear. I put my shots up
on Facebook for them and they were very well received. Some are in my
portfolio now. :-)

1. The Fuji S2s (ca.2002) are now dead.
2. The Nikon D70s (2004) are barely hanging on; some the LCDs are
gone, some the buttons or dials does not work anymore and in some the
viewfinder LEDs are dead.
3. The Canon 350Ds (2003? but they outwardly appear to be newer
compared to the D70s) are beginning to go "Error 99" but when they
work...they work.

There are a couple of Canon 5Ds but are kept for faculty use; there
are newer Canon 450Ds and Nikon D90s that are farely new.

I've seen students drop them, allow them to swing off the strap to hit
desk and what have you and even heard of a story of a student actually
poking the sensor with his finger to see what "photo" would come out
(I suppose while on B with the lens off)...

Bong

Where I went to school, photography students were required to have a
medium-format film camera. Didn't matter what kind as long as it could
handle 120 film and was not a Holga.

They've recently dropped that requirement & bought a bunch of Mamiya
645s the students can check out. The requirement now is for every
student to have a DSLR. IF the student equips with CaNikon, the school
has lenses the students can check out. If you use any other brand,
you're on your own.

There was surprisingly little breakage considering the majority of
students were 1 year out of high school.

Fortunately, I already had a selection of lenses in Pentax mount to meet
the requirements (fast tele-prime for baseball).

There's a reason why "don't quit your day job" and "starving artist" are

My hat's off to anyone who can make a full time living as an artist.

You could always side step the whole issue by getting one of these, a
Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 Asph. OIS. Then you'd be
spending maybe 10-20 times the money for a lens than you had on the
body, but you'd probably never need another lens, though you would need
a 4:3 to m4:3 adapter.

Good news/bad news

2012-04-25 Thread Walt Gilbert

Hi all,

Yeah, but you're not getting 12mm on a full-frame DSLR, either. It's a
rangefinder lens that doesn't need to deal with the flange distance
imposed by a mirror box. The fair comparison is 14mm full-frame DSLR
vs. 10mm APS-C... that's 114 vs. 102 degrees. There's a difference,
but it's not earth shattering.
