OT reading Canon 5DII cards

2012-11-16 Thread Larry Colen
The widow of my friend who passed away from cancer last year asked me to teach
her how to use his Canon 5DmkII. So, first of all, I need to figure it out.
When I was last at his place, we plugged his CF card into the reader on his
desktop computer, and uploaded his last files.
I just tried doing that on my iMac, with no luck. It wouldn't even recognize
the card in finder. I then found a USB cable, plugged it into the camera and
while OSX wouldn't recognize the camera, Lightroom did. So I was able to back
up his last photos (and the last photos of him) onto my computer.

The CF card in question is a 64GB card. Do I need a special reader for it?
Does anyone know the reason that the camera isn't showing up in the finder when
it is plugged in with the USB cable, even though lightroom can read the files?

Jos,

Here are few points that I find relevant:

1. The price/quality and price/reliability ratio of DA* 16-50 is high.
Although I am not terribly bothered by the soft corners at wider
apertures and wider focal lengths, it is a bit unpleasant to look at
wide shots Galia and I took in our most recent trip to USA only to see
softness where ideally it ought to be sharp...

2. I did not have any SDM troubles with my sample, *yet*. That is, I am
going to emphasize that specifically in my ad for it - no SDM issues
whatsoever, *yet*.

3. I might use a slightly longer reach for outdoor situations where
maximal aperture of f4.5 won't be that objectionable.

4. Yes, the HSM OS lens is better on the paper. However in terms of
mechanical longevity the fact that it has the whole optical group
designed to be movable is not something I'd appreciate.

5. I've just missed an opportunity to buy one such lens for USD 195
(plus shipping, taxes on my side, etc). So it is not very expensive.

I've been introduced to this lens by Jaume few years ago when we met
here. So I kind of know this lens and even then I remember I was quite
surprised by it.

I hope my answer makes sense to you.

My ROM is pretty much the same as the right shoulder. Pain is all but gone and
what pain I feel is almost certainly soft tissue and not the break.

Mild concern that the x-rays are not showing much bone between the clavicle and the
"chip" that broke off, but the doc said that sometimes x-rays just don't show
that new bone well. And since the two ligaments in the area appear to be strong and
supporting things well, and since my pain is all but gone, riding should be okay.

Light rides this weekend and if no pain, cleared for work on Monday.

Return for one last set of x-rays in January as a precaution.

That is a lot of talk for: we're back on the bike again! Woo-hoo!

Carrying a body without any str.. lenses attached

2012-11-16 Thread Igor Roshchin

I am surprised to see that somebody would be putting the only body
without the lens attached in the bag as it is shown in the first
video at, say 0:50, and then again at about 1:00.
http://products.lowepro.com/product/Pro-Messenger-180-AW,2285,20.htm
or directly at Vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/29802717#

While the narrator says that it is the second body, in those cases,
it is clearly not the case. (Other footage where it is is
intermixed with this though.)

So, I was wondering if anybody would be carrying the only camera
body in a messenger bag (when, presumably, you want to be able
to take it out and use quickly) - separate from any lens.
If yes, - what would be the reason why you'd do that?

The only possible argument I can see is that it would be quicker
to choose the lens (so that you don't need to detach what you
have on first). I'd think that it'd be better to have something
always attached, - at least you'd be more prepared for ~50% of
shots (if you carry two lenses).

What do you think?

I very seldom do anything in black and white. This photo seemed to
have the right tonal range so I thought I'd give it a try.

Since I usually shoot color, I don't have any special software for
black and white conversion. Everything was done in Lightroom 4. Most
of the work was done in the Basic panel but there was a little
tweaking done in the HSL/Color/BW panel.

I posted the color version earlier, you can see it here
.

I like the way it turned out, but I'm not sure if I prefer the color
or the black and white version. I'm leaning toward the black and
white, but that's probably because it's more recent.

Yeah I had the Mavica FD7. It was magic at the time, and fun! My wife
carried one around at the Seattle Garden Show in 1998 and was amazed
by how many people wanted to stop and see her (my) camera. IQ was
abysmal in retrospect, but for thumbnail and web images it was OK. It
also provided a use for all those AOL diskettes that seemed to arrive
in the mail on a monthly basis or packaged in with magazines.

Just last week I started a new project and had my picture taken for
the security badge. I was amazed to see the person pull out a Sony
Mavica FD91, a generation or two up featuring 1024 x 768 resolution
images, still recording on floppy disk. That model looked like a
camera with a grip instead of a patio paver. I purchased one of those
for my Dad in 2000.

I always wanted the CD-R version, but then digital imaging just
sky-rocketed and here we are today.

We had a couple of Mavicas in the office where I was working in the
early 2000s. At that stage , of course, all of our desktop machines
had floppy disk drives and the Mavica was a quick and easy way of
getting images onto a PC.

The quality wasn't wonderful - we mainly used them for photographing
info on whiteboards.

Cheers

Re: WTB or trade

2012-11-16 Thread Jos from Holland

Hi Boris,
I wonder why you want the older one.
I have the older one. I am happy with it, but last week in the theatre,
I had to switch it to manual focus because of the screwdriver noise. The
HSM version would have been silent I guess.

At the other hand: I try to avoid HSM lenses for reliability reasons.
What are your arguments for wanting screwdriver and not HSM?

RE: OT: House of Cards

From: "Daniel J. Matyola"

Any fans of the British TV series "House of Cards" here? It is one of
my all time favorites.

Netflix is making a new version -- set in the US -- with Kevin Spacey
as FU. It comes out in February, and I can't wait.

There is a trailer here:

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/House_of_Cards/70178217?mqso=80013955&gclid=CNebg9LD0rMCFQ-f4AodDCAAaQ#

While I'm at it, anyone here a fan of that great Netflix series "Lillyhammer"?

It wants me to sign up for a free trial @ only $7.99 a month.

"Another classic being rehashed? :("

Yes, but that is not always a bad thing. This is an American version,
set in the American political arena. Kevin Spacey is one of the few
actors I can see as an acceptable FU. After the great job Netflix did
on Lillyhammer, I am glad to see they are the ones producing House of
Cards.

PESO: Artiste Entrance

2012-11-16 Thread David Mann
Victoria Square was re-opened to the public today so we went down to have a
look. This square is very unusual because it's bisected by a river, the Avon,
and on one bank is our Town Hall. The ultimate fate of this building is still
unknown but I think there's a lot of effort going in to save at least the main
auditorium.

We sat and read by the river for a while (actually I put my book aside and
daydreamed instead), then left via a new path where a hotel used to be at the
corner of the square, next door to the Town Hall.

As we went past the side of the building I saw this doorway and took a photo
with my cellphone through the wire fence.

Cheers,
Dave
