Stay on the f***ing bus

2013-03-14 Thread Derby Chang

Often, on the street, I say to self, self, you just took a lazy shot.
Someone has done it before and better. That someone is usually Garry
Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz, Helen Levitt, Elliott Erwitt blah blah blah.
Yet for some time now, doing anything else feels like dabbling, wasting
time really. So I have been in a rut.

But reading this blogpost clarifies things. I don't want to dabble.
There's a Swiss mountain to climb, with probably some good views and
rare vin des glaciers at the top.

I've met Lisa. Very nice soul. I love her set.

There is a book from a NY photographer that I love too

I think Lisa's material is stronger. Less stagey and jokey. But both so
joyous.

Define "the correct tool".

Consider whether using the best right-handed scissors counts as common
sense for a left-handed person.

Also consider whether boycotting a company counts as politics (both
Chick-Fil-A and Ben & Jerry's have been targets, for example).

Actually, two images.

Having heard the groans from snow-and-ice afflicted PDMLers as they viewed
tropical beach and jungle shots, I offer this is to illustrate that I share
your pain; I came home to an ice-filled river.

http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e5811daa8

But then we had a few days of warm temperatures, plus quite a bit of rain that
helped to melt the ice and dramatically increased the height and flow rate of
the river. So the ice broke up and went downstream two days ago. Today this guy
showed up:

http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e5811db7a

Today we also had numerous Mallards, Canada Geese, and a pair of Common
Goldeneye on the river in front of the house. Spring is coming . . .

Re: Kodak Instamatic, 50th anniversary

2013-03-14 Thread George Sinos
I was working in a camera store in the mid-1960's. It was a regional
chain that had about 30 or 40 stores over several states.

There were several models of Instamatics that started at about
$15-$20. They came boxed with the flash bulb or cube of the day and a
126 cartridge of print film.

The simple fact that you didn't have to have the skill necessary to
wind the film on a take-up spool opened up photography to thousands of
people. We still had several people that had older cameras that would
bring in the camera, we would take the used film out for processing,
then sell them a new roll and load it for them.

The Instamatics sold like hotcakes and around holidays and graduation
time it was hard to keep them in stock. More expensive models had
better light meters, auto-film advance that worked on a wind-up
mechanism, etc. We had no problem selling them at full retail because
when you bought one from us, you got a "lifetime" guarantee. The
small print said that was not your lifetime, but the lifetime of the
camera. Defined to be as long as parts were available. In those
days, that was several years. People actually repaired stuff back
then.

In that time period almost everyone shot Kodak color print film.
Standard processing time was a week to 10 days. It seem like the cost
for that was somewhere between $10 and $15. Mini-labs, free double
prints and cheap processing were still a few years away. Our camera
chain ran the biggest processing lab in the area. Almost all of the
drugstores and other places that "developed" your film actually sent
it to us.

You could specify processing at the Kodak lab. It would be sent to an
actual Kodak run lab. That took longer and cost additional.

I shot 35mm slides because the processing was fast and cheap. $4 a
roll and 24 hour processing was standard. If you got your film in by
7am you could get it back the same day.

Keep in mind, those are prices are in 1966-7 dollars.

As to quality? Maybe it wasn't great but It was certainly more than
good enough. Our store normally took in 50-100 rolls a day and did
less than a dozen enlargements of any size. After a big holiday you
can multiply those numbers by 2 or 3.

Even 35mm prints were typically 3x5 with a border. Borderless 4x6
prints didn't become common for a few years.

A few years later Kodak consumer cameras went to even smaller
negatives with the Disc and 110 film sizes.

I sure can.
"Travesty" is probably a little strong, dontcha think?
What idea do you "wish would never have been invented unless it was in
larger format": the cheapo camera or the film-in-cartridge idea? The
cheapo camera would be a cheapo camera in any format, so I can't see
you advocating for that. So you must be talking about the cartridge
film concept. The 126 format is already larger than 35mm, which a lot
of quality images were produced on, so I don't think you can be
faulting the 126 negative size.

Kodak's 126 cartridge"lowered the bar" for film loading in a very
clever and inexpensive way. It also made it possible for images to be
saved even if the camera's film back was opened (which meant more
developing and print business, instead of the whole roll just being
thrown away). There was nothing any lower quality about the film being
put in a 126 cartridge over that being put in a 35mm cartridge. So I'm
assuming you are railing against the cheap cameras themselves.

The first Instamatic was released in 1963, yet you have imbued it with
the incredible power of "short chang[ing] the general public, millions
of people, including my father and myself for a good 20 years (not
knowing any better being born in 1960) into accepting crap quality
images in exchange for convenience." 20 years of ignorance about
better camera options? Seriously? Lots of blaming going on in that
sentence and no taking of any personal responsibility for "not knowing
any better". As a child, you may not have known better, but I don't
know what your father's problem might have been. 35mm SLR film cameras
were already out there in 1963. Good quality 35mm rangefinders by all
the big camera companies were out there by the metric buttload. A lot
of people had them. If you were a curious person you probably saw
somebody with one (on vacation, etc.) Even so, a lot of people made an
economic decision that for their snapshot purposes, something
inexpensive was "good enough". Others were intimidated by too many
options (shutter speeds, apertures, etc) on the better quality
cameras. In any event, I don't see how it is Kodak's fault that you
(or your father) didn't become aware of (or purchase) higher quality
cameras before you did.

I don't think that anybody is going to seriously argue that the
Instamatic would be the only camera that one would ever want/need. But
I think there are an awful lot of people who had their first
photographic experience with a camera that they would today describe
as "cheap" or even "crap" but that camera ignited a spark that took
them to where they are today (and Kodak didn't exactly have the market
cornered on those).

Back in 1967-68 timeframe there was a relatively new magazine called Psychology
Today that attempted to make serious psychological research accessible to the
general public. It soon degenerated into a mish-mash of voodooistic pop
psychology nonsense, but for a while there were serious articles. One that has
stuck with me all of these years was a commentary on what the author labeled as
the "zeitgeister shyster." The targets of the diatribe were those researchers
who pounced on the hot topic of the day, did a few quick studies which were of
no lasting importance but which were published because the journal editors were
eager for articles on those hot topics. (And had no peer reviewers competent in
the topic to flag the lack of quality in the articles.) As the zeitgeist
changed, the zeitgeister shyster would change targets, continuing to accumulate
articles in his resumé but contributing nothing substantive to the body of
knowledge. The message in the article you referenced is the same: don't jump
from fad to fad, shadowing others. Find something meaningful to you and work at
it until you get it right.

Re: OT - iphonography

Thanks Don

I/we appreciate your comments. Glad you enjoyed his images.

He has a perfectly good Pentax DSLR, but he always has his iphone with him.
He's about to get a new version on the iphone and he's going to turn his old
iphone into his 'photo use only' phone.

You know I do sometimes wonder about the artifact of calling photos taken
by another camera as off-topic. Because I am so glad you posted these.

Don since this is the Pentax-Discuss Mail List, I do feel that things not
related to Pentax should be off-topic, now if this was a non specific camera
list I wouldn't feel that way.

Obviously he has good photography skills ( take as much credit for that as
you want) and he stands in front of some interesting subjects. But he also
has a way with less interesting subjects. Frankly with his talent, the
camera of choice is irrelevant. Personally I hate to take pictures with
Iphone, which makes me admire this work by anyone.

Re: K-5 and over exposure?

Is anyone finding that their k-5 leans towards over exposure? I often have to
use -.7 to -1 ev compensation. I find this consistent across old glass. With
the kit lens and thr 12-24 it seems to do a bit better, but still overexposes
at times. I generally use matrix metering. Even in well lit scenes in
daylight. Sometimes with the same glass it works fine at , but I'm forced to
chimp constantly to look for overexposure. Also the meter seems to jump around
on the same scene. I tried some shots between my k-7 and it was matching
settings, so I can't decide it my meter is working properly. There is
generally a 1ev difference if I compare to live view with live view
giving the correct/better exposure reading. Any thoughts from you guys? I
bought this k-5 six months ago and I don't remember making -.7 the norm on
my k-7. I usually only had to add negative compensation at night on that
camera

not me; with the K200d i used for 3.5 years, i wound up habitually dialing in
-0.5, sometimes more, but my K-5 is less prone to overexpose so i usually just
compensate when the scene suggests it; i've only had the K-5 three months, so
the only lenses i've used much with it are an oldish A 50/1.7, middle-aged FA
28/2.8, and "new" DA 15/4

i have had a lens whose aperture mechanism was failing, meaning it would not
fully stop down by the time the shutter opened; that definitely caused overexposure

Re: My photo exhibit in Voghera

2013-03-14 Thread Dario Bonazza

Thanks Ken,
The idea behind it was the intent to show the pics as they were big slides,
with a very thin black frame and a large white area ouside the photo. That
also gives me the freedom to use different aspect ratios for the pics,
if/when needed.

Nicely composed. You could probably shift the magenta toward green a bit in PS
color balance or even the ting slider in saturation. But I like the vibrant
color overall.

Hi Bruce,
Thank-you. Yes, the lights are good, only the venue is small (a room with a
long window next to a photo store). So small that most people attending the
exhibit had to stay in the next room while recording the official opening,
with only local authorities and organizers beside me in front of the video
camera. However, you see some footage where I comment photos with teens and
people other than those.

I watched that. I like the design of those cameras. The xpro is kind of
really sexy in a way, BUT I really don't like the xtrans sensor. The k-5 is
better in certain ways and better at high iso too. There are also still
problems with lightroom and quite honestly I do not like that fuji over
reports iso by a half stop to make their camera look better in comparisons.
The k-5 IIs comparisons I've seen show that they both resolve similar levels
of detail, but I believe the IIs edges it out and is almost comparable to the
5dmk2 in terms of resolving power.

No weather proofing or shake reduction either. Bummer. I know the longer lenses
feature IS, but my k-5 has it with every lens I mount. I think I still vastly
prefer a dslr ovf to a rangefinder too. Different strokes. Nice
street camera though if they ever get the af to dslr like speeds.

I read that article the other day. A nice read. I've always seen
photography as a mountain I am climbing. I use that thought often. I've come a
long way in 5+ years of shooting almost religiously every day. I could spend a
lifetime trying to reach the top. It keeps me going, knowing that
everything I do just gets better. I've been in several ruts, but when I
put the camera down, the only cure to the depression is to pick it back up
again and keep shooting. When I die, you'll probably find me still clutching
my faithful companion. Hopefully there will be at least good shot or two on the
card. Its all I can leave behind.

While I appreciate the nostalgia around Kodak and the Instamatic, I
think it was a travesty.

It short changed the general public, millions of people, including my
father and myself for a good 20 years (not knowing any better being
born in 1960) into accepting crap quality images in exchange for
convenience.

I wish the idea had never been invented, unless it was going to be
provided in a larger format, which of course would have negated the
profitability.

I tend to think Kodak's demise is little recompense for the damage
they did to photography after practically inventing it for the common
man.
The 126 was a continuation of Kodak's commitment to making photography
as easy as possible for commoners. The whole drop in cartridge idea
(something they stuck with from the introduction of 126 in 1963 right
through to the discontinuation of APS film a couple of years ago) was
because of their make it easy philosophy. Everything Kodak introduced
from the 126 on was some sort of drop in cartridge.
It's also why the early Kodaks came preloaded and you shot your pictures
and sent the entire camera to the processor.

Yep, I can accept it for jpg from the camera but the raw should be
better exposed in matrix mode especially in instances when there is
latitude remaining in the dark end of the histogram.
