Great composition. The rippled pattern on the water adds impact as well.

if you don't find it in Custom, check the Setup section. I can't tell

Noone else seems to like doing this, but with M and K lenses, (or for
that matter A, F, and FA lenses), you can do old fashioned Stop Down
metering kind of like using a Spotmatic. You set DOF preview to
Optical, then with the mode dial set to manual, and a lens off A,
holding in the DOF preview stops down the lens to taking aperture, and
turns on the meter, you can then adjust the aperture to get the proper
exposure. The K20D runs out of EV range in the meter pretty fast when
used that way, but then again, it has the same problem with the green
button too.

2013-07-29 Thread Bob Sullivan
Ann,
Go thru the main menu of the camera.
(You don't need no stinkin directions.)
The 5th or 6th screen leads you to a long list of 25+ options.
Look at them, turning on or off the 25 different options.
The K-5 is currently set NOT TO WORK with lenses with an aperture ring.
CHANGE THAT!
Then your 28mm will work like Paul suggests.

Re: PESO Weiner decay

2013-07-29 Thread P.J. Alling
The reason Der Wienerschnitzel specialized in Hotdogs rather than
Breaded Cutlets and German Noodles came about because of Vienna
Sausages. I believe they originated in the late 1890's, a particularly
strange delicacy when you think about it, found mostly in the North East
U.S. I suspect like the English Muffin, what ever they are based on
from Vienna would be unrecognizable to an American visiting Vienna, as
would the "Cocktail Wienie" be unrecognizable in it's Americanized form
to a Viennese. Heck it seems most Americans don't make the connection,
which is probably why Der Wienerschnitzel chain is falling on hard times.

You can still find them sold as Tinned Vienna Cocktail Frankfurters.

Now this is conjecture based on nothing more than the fact that oldsters
in my family refereed to Frankfurters as Wieners, and Dachshunds, Wiener
Dogs, (due to their elongated bodies), the terms Frankfurter, Wiener,
and Hotdog, became interchangeable at least in the North East sometime
early in the 20th Century.

That's part of why Anthony Wiener sending photos of that proud bit of
his anatomy seems so apropos.

 It was, his destiny.

What did it use to be?

There is an American fast-food chain called Der Wienerschnitzel.
They were primarily drive throughs, with some outside seating,
but no dining room. They all had these marvelously tacky A-frame
buildings.

The chain has been on decline for quite some time, and the Santa Cruz
location was shut down a few years back.

Their food was primarily hot dogs. I have no idea why they chain
is called Wienershnitzel, since as we've discussed, wienershnitzel
has nothing to do with hot dogs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_dog

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs
originated.[6] These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known since the 13th century and given
to the people on the event of imperial coronations, starting with the coronation of Maximilian II,
Holy Roman Emperor as King. Wiener refers to Vienna, Austria, whose German name is
"Wien", home to a sausage made of a mixture of pork and beef[7] (cf. Hamburger, whose
name also derives from a German-speaking city). Johann Georg Lahner, a 18th/19th century butcher
from the Franconian city of Coburg, is said to have brought the Frankfurter Würstchen to Vienna,
where he added beef to the mixture and simply called it Frankfurter.[8] Nowadays, in German
speaking countries, except Austria, hot dog sausages are called Wiener or Wiener Würstchen
(Würstchen means "little sausage"), in differentiation to the original pork only mixture
from Frankfurt. In Swiss German, it is called Wienerli, while in Austria the terms Frankfurter or
Frankfurter Würstel are used.

Re: PESOs - 3 new ones with the K-5 and MANUAL lens

2013-07-29 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Thanks guys for the input on the manual lens stuff..

I've now told the camera it is a 50mm lens, (the Smc A)
but more importantly, I think the focus problem was the diopter setting
in the view finder.. I took off the eye cup and then was able to change
the diopter - and see better too. I have to do some more shots
to convince myself I can keep things sharp... quickly.. it was hard to
see the lines that you are supposed to make sharp. but I think I've got
it now. (doing it with my distance glasses on.)

Derby, re "Zone focusing" - is that the same thing as what I know as
"Hyper-focal distance?" setting it for shooting from the hip?

when I use the 50, I have to set the lens on A for it to work at all
The 28mm lens I have isn't an A series . It worked with an adaptor
on my Rebel... Nothing happens at all - Can't push the shutter, etc
..and window that tells you how to tell the camera what lens you have

doesn't appear. Too bad, I'd love to use that lens

The lens was the smc Pentax-A 50mm f1.4 that I've had since the early

Re: PESO Weiner decay

2013-07-29 Thread John
It's because the meat in hot-dogs are known as wieners. Just ignore the
"schnitzel".

According to Wikipedia:

Wiener is German for Viennese, but may also refer to:

A "Polish sausage" or "wenar"
A German sausage named after Vienna (called Frankfurter in Austria)
A hot dog

... and they're called a Wiener in Frankfurt. Go figure.

The guy who founded the chain died in April this year:

In Swiss German, it is called Wienerli, while in Austri

a the terms Frankfurter or Frankfurter Würstel are used.

Re: GESO Car parts

2013-07-29 Thread kwaller

With the Pinto hatchback, there was apparently a small, but significant
chance that in a rear end collision the filler neck could be driven into
the gas tank rupturing it and spilling fuel.

The issue was actually a sharp edge (on a machining transfer point) on the
rear axle differential that could act as a can opener should the fuel tank
be forced sufficiently into the rear differential.

I think the station wagon model used a completely different gas tank,

The station wagon fuel filler was on the rear quarter panel.

The hatchback Pinto had the gas filler in the back below the bumper. I
can't remember if it had the gas cap under a flip down license plate
holder or not. I had another car that did that, and it was a PITA. You
had to hold the license plate holder down with one hand while you held
the pump nozzle with the other. When they first went to self-serve gas
they took the little latching gadget off the nozzles so you had to
squeeze the lever the whole time you were pumping gas.

With the Pinto hatchback, there was apparently a small, but significant
chance that in a rear end collision the filler neck could be driven into
the gas tank rupturing it and spilling fuel.

Some engineer at Ford told the company that the problem could be
prevented by adding a device during manufacture that would increase the
cost by about $1.50 per vehicle. He was over-ruled by the bean counters
at Ford because it would add significantly to the total cost over the
millions of Pintos Ford expected build.

The upshot was that the amount they saved by leaving the part off was a
lot less than they ended up settling the lawsuits for, PLUS they had to
recall the Pinto and fit the part anyway, where it cost Ford a whole lot
more than $1.50 per vehicle.

Orders of magnitude more as it were.

I think the station wagon model used a completely different gas tank,
but in any case the design didn't leave room for the filler neck to be
at the back end of the vehicle, so they put it on the left rear fender,
either in front of the tire arch opening or above it where it wouldn't
be vulnerable in a rear end collision.

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar
to hot dogs originated.[6] These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known
since the 13th century and given to the people on the event of imperial
coronations, starting with the coronation of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor
as King. Wiener refers to Vienna, Austria, whose German name is "Wien", home to
a sausage made of a mixture of pork and beef[7] (cf. Hamburger, whose name also
derives from a German-speaking city). Johann Georg Lahner, a 18th/19th century
butcher from the Franconian city of Coburg, is said to have brought the
Frankfurter Würstchen to Vienna, where he added beef to the mixture and simply
called it Frankfurter.[8] Nowadays, in German speaking countries, except
Austria, hot dog sausages are called Wiener or Wiener Würstchen (Würstchen
means "little sausage"), in differentiation to the original pork only mixture
from Frankfurt. In Swiss German, it is called Wienerli, while in Austria the
terms Frankfurter or Frankfurter Würstel are used.

On an APS-C format a 50mm lens is a short telephoto, (basically
portrait, roughly the same angle of view as a 75mm lens would be on 35mm
film), length lens. It's still a 50mm lens however.

with M set on both focus and mode nothing happened. Couldnt use it on
the IstD either..

Anyone know if it is out of the question ? I couldnt find anything in
the manual "attach a proper lens" didn't help much :-)

I have not used many manual focus lenses on my K-5. For me they work

The little station wagon was a pretty good car; not subject to the rear end
collision broken filler neck problem.

The only real problem I had with mine was the automatic transmission was the
same unit Ford used for their larger vehicles & it sucked a lot of power out
of the vehicle.

If it had been a stick shift, I might still have it running today.

This is another photo scanned from an old Fuji slide. It didn't turn out to

Re: GESO Car parts

2013-07-29 Thread John

I think the station wagon model used a completely different gas tank,
but in any case the design didn't leave room for the filler neck to be
at the back end of the vehicle, so they put it on the left rear fender,
either in front of the tire arch opening or above it where it wouldn't
be vulnerable in a rear end collision.

it was the OS updates that were trouble; but if you never use the
internet with the OS, it's pretty safe without updates

That's the kind of information I want to think through before starting
the project.

The last computer I built is the one I'm currently using for Photoshop.
I spent almost two years planning before I even started accumulating
parts. I gathered parts for about 3 months (to spread out the cost,
something I won't need to do as much now that I've finished school &
paid off my car payments). Spent a day assembling it & about a week
getting the software I wanted installed; checking everything out to make
sure it was all working like I wanted.

The only thing that system does on the internet is the software updates
for Windoze7 & Adobe, with the occasional search for how to do something
in Photoshop.

What I'm thinking about the hackintosh for is a music workstation -
electronic instrument - recording platform. Anything I bring down from
the internet for it will be scanned & vetted on this system before going
over to the workstation on CD/memory stick. At this stage of my
planing, I'm not even thinking of connecting it to my home network.

Yeah, that's a virtual Mac running on a Windoze box. If I do this I'm

I could probably find a $400 Windoze8 box at TigerDirect & just blow off

Ann I believe you should set it to 50 for 50mm the software will do the
math. For a zoom try to use the middle or the focal length you expect to
use. Also when you have it focus by hand, it will give you the in-focus
indicator even on a manual lens. Sort of like one of those eye tests
they give you at the optometrist.

If the lens is an "A" you can use the k-5 dial to change the aperture,
if not you have to set the lens aperture by hand on the lens. When I use
this type of lens I put the camera in aperture priority and get pretty
good exposures.

I don't know about the 28mm. I have one somewhere but my K-5 is at home.

Focusing manual lens takes some practice for sure; the viewfinder on
digital was not made for focusing. I was comparing two manual 135's
yesterday and seem to under-focus mostly. But the old glass does have a
look to it (color contrast?).

I finally figured that out... however... the lens I put on is a 50mm
physically, but that means on a digital camera what you see is something

I had a lot of trouble keeping things sharp -

Now - the 50mm I used has an A on the barrel - that is, you can set it
on A. The 28mm I have does not, and when I put THAT on the K-5 even
with M set on both focus and mode nothing happened. Couldnt use it on

I finally figured that out... however... the lens I put on is a 50mm
physically, but that means on a digital camera what you see is something
like , um what? 80?

I had a lot of trouble keeping things sharp -

Now - the 50mm I used has an A on the barrel - that is, you can set it
on A. The 28mm I have does not, and when I put THAT on the K-5 even
with M set on both focus and mode nothing happened. Couldnt use it on
the IstD either..

Anyone know if it is out of the question ? I couldnt find anything in
the manual "attach a proper lens" didn't help much :-)

It was sheer luck, it appears, that I had anything in focus at all

I have not used many manual focus lenses on my K-5. For me they work

A couple of details of one of my personal favorites: a rose and white 1956

Re: GESO Car parts

2013-07-29 Thread John

The little station wagon was a pretty good car; not subject to the rear
end collision broken filler neck problem.

The only real problem I had with mine was the automatic transmission was
the same unit Ford used for their larger vehicles & it sucked a lot of
power out of the vehicle.

If it had been a stick shift, I might still have it running today.

Re: OT: Anyone here built a hackintosh?

2013-07-29 Thread John

Half the fun is rounding up the parts, putting them all together &
having the damn thing actually work when you finally shoot the power to it.

The software update thingy could be a problem, although I don't think
Apple's position regarding home-brewed computers running Mac OS is
going to be tenable in the long run.

And in truth, I'm not even sure software updates will be that much of a
problem for me.

I got to thinking about a hackintosh because some software I'm
interested in doesn't come in a Windoze version. But, it's not software
I'd feel the need to continually upgrade to the latest version. Install
it once, and I'm done with the need to upgrade.

Plus, it looks like Windoze versions are possibly in the future AND
Windoze alternatives already exist.
