Thanks. Yes, it was very obediently behaving exactly as prescribed in the bird guides. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/life/Grey_Wagtail As for Mike's comment about velociraptors, I should very much like to see one at Canary Wharf, but that would probably involve going onto one of the offices during working hours, and I'd be unlikely to live to tell the tale. K-3 mirror/shutter sound
Hi all, this is a question to anybody owning a K-5 (or K-5II/K-5IIs) and the new K-3. How do new and older cameras compare about their shooting sound? From those online videos floating around I have a bad feeling of a sharper and more metallic click of the K-3 (sort of K20D-ish) as opposed to the softer, well-damped sound of the K-5 series. Is that true or were they just distorced sound recordings in online videos? That's a very critical issue for the kind of shooting I usually do (theater and such) and could be decisive for a possible purchase on my side. First impressions
The K-3 looks like the various pictures of it that you have all seen. The K-3 looks very much like the K-5/K-5ii/K-5iis, with the exception of the few obvious changes in button location, the infamous headphone connector bulge, etc. It is different but in very subtle ways. The RRS L-bracket for the K-5 fits, but not quite exactly. I haven't tried the Kirk standard bracket yet. The changes in button design and location are all good IMHO. A few quirks/changes in standard functions. E.g., when Reviewing an image, the Up and Down arrow buttons are used to change the display rather than repeated presses on the Info button. No big deal, just a minor difference. Reports on whether it actually takes decent images will need to wait until after I do some raking and bagging of leaves on the lawn. The AF540FGZ II is very nearly the exact size as my AF360FGZ (which I believe was smaller than the AF540FGZ). The AF540FGZ II control panel is laid out quite differently from the AF360FGZ. A glance at the manual however leads me to believe that while the UI has changed, nothing has changed in the basic functionality. The manual is both English and Japanese and is thus twice the size it would need to be for one language. I suspect it is going to take some study and experimentation before I get comfortable with this unit. It was only recently that I started using my AF360FGZ and am still a novice with flash, particularly off-camera wireless flash. We'll see if I can integrate the two units together . . . Once), and I suspect it has never happened to anyone else either. I couldn't agree more. My A*600/6.6 came with a great big Tamron UV filter on it, which considering how much I paid for the bloody lens, I decided to leave on. I couldn't get a sharp image out of that lens no matter how hard I tried. I wrote it off to having insufficient tripod and head, though I was using it on a Zone VI wood tripod and whatever the big Zone VI head is (some sort of rebadged Manfrotto). Eventually I twigged to the possibility the filter was causing the problem so I removed it, and viola! instant sharpness. Your opinion on mr Rowell?
I just had an hour's visit to the Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop. http://www.mountainlight.com To those of you unfamiliar with it, it's the official gallery of photographer Galen Rowell. Rowell has been one of my heroes for more than twenty years. More so than Ansel Adams, for example. It was great to have the opportunity to see some of his work printed large and hung on walls. It was also interesting to see so many of his shots hung together. He was very much a colour photographer, often accused of practicing velvia aesthetics. While I usually fail to understand why that is a derogatory term, I did become a bit overwhelmed after perusing the fifth wall of prints. Then I stumbled upon one of his books My Tibet, for which the Dalai Lama had provided the text. It had a bundle of those typical colour photos I know him for, including the iconic picture of the rainbow coming down on the Palace in Lhasa (P19 on this page: http://mountainlight.com/posters.html ). What dominated the book, however, were pictures of people. More subtly rendered, but with a lot of impact. Are some of you folks familiar with this book? What are your thoughts about it? I'd like to hear your opinions about Galen Rowell in general too, of course. Right now I'm wondering whether I'll be able to fit the book into my luggage for the return flight. That seems to be the only thing stopping me from buying it at the moment; along with a retrospective book that's fairly new. :-) Jostein -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Filters?
Possibly. My understanding is that lenses with back-end filter drawers have their optics designed with the expectation that another piece of glass will be in the path of the photons streaming toward their final destination. Having no filter there is possibly degrading your images. On the other hand, I don't believe that more typical lenses with front-mounted filters are necessarily designed with the same assumption. So I wouldn't draw the conclusion that filters are universally a good thing. I've always assumed that the design compensation for a rear filter was a trade-off. Such lenses tend to require huge (expensive) filters. So, rather than make you bear the cost of expensive add-ons, they assume a (rear) filter will be in place and compensate for it. And probably design a set of the necessary high-quality filters that fit the drawer and conform to their design. Maybe I am giving the lens designers too much credit . . . stan On Nov 4, 2013, at 6:07 PM, Rob Studdert wrote: My A*300/2.8 has a filter drawer but has never had a filter in there, will my images magically improve if I put one in? :) On 4 November 2013 11:29, kwal...@peoplepc.com wrote: Interestingly, along a similar lines, my 600 (and other Pentax lenses with drop in filters) requires a filter in place for optimum performance although I've never tested to see effects without a filter. Re: Your opinion on mr Rowell?
I thought Galen to be a Nikon bigot and employed a swaggering literary style. I wrote and told him that some years prior to his death. I've been to his Bishop Mountain Light gallery and did enjoy some images. I'm familiar with Rowel's work you mentioned, however, I did find his work generally over saturated. Luckily, when I visited the gallery, some work of David Munch was hanging in the guest section of the gallery. It was a particular thrill for me to view a number of glorious large format prints done by a photographer who's work I'd admired for some time. I happened to be at Maroon Bells, above Aspen Co., at a time when Galen and I were the only ones there. He was packing up when I arrived and in a few minutes announced he was going down canyon.

K-3 First Shot and Impressions
The UPS truck finally pulled up around 9 PM this evening - I was starting to worry that my K-3 had gotten lost. Open the box, popped on a lens, dropped in a spare battery, set the date and time (but forgot to save them) Within about 2 minutes the first shot was snapped: http://calarti.com/peso/IMGP0001.jpg K-3 and FA 50 f1.7 / 1/30th @ F2.8. I'm planning on taking another shot tomorrow :-) Impressions: 1. Slightly larger and noticeably heavier than the K-5, but feels great in the hand. The grip felt perfect. Build quality feels rock solid. 2. Quiet shutter, quieter than the K-5. 3. Rear screen is excellent. 4. Slightly different layout of the controls / buttons, but totally intuitive. Haven't looked at the manual yet, though I'm probably missing stuff if I don't. The biggest challenge was disabling auto ISO, which took about 20 seconds to decipher. 5. AF is significantly improved - faster, more precise, locks on the subject quickly. I was shooting in rather dim light and it did hunt a bit here and there, especially with the black cats. 6.Auto white balance is good but not perfect. 7. I notice noise at ISO 1600. I took the same shot (minus the cat) with the K-5 and notice noise in it too. They seem comparable, but one shot is not much of a basis for comparison. 8. Two 32 gig cards (I was lucky and got the free card deal from BW) show up with a nominal storage count of ~1200 DNG files. Given how conservative Pentax is with their storage estimates I expect actual file storage to be much higher. I won't get a chance to really run it through its paces till this weekend, but I'm excited. Looks like an excellent upgrade over the K-5, which is no slouch of a camera... Anyway, it's fairly self explanatory. I had noise reduction set to off on both cameras. I downsized the 5% images by 50%, I downsized the K3 file to the same as the full K5 dimension, and then downsized it again by 50% to get the same length. The K3 image is a little taller than the K5 image. Images shot using a desk lamp for illumination, lens was the DFA 100/2.8 macro at f/8. The focus was about a third of the way from the trim ring to the tip. I thought the K5 was pretty good at high ISO. The K3 doesn't have to worry about high ISO performance. What this set of images doesn't show, because it can't, is how much more of a pleasure to use the K3 is over the K5. Everything about the K3 is better in terms of usability. Re: OT: Nikon Df
LOL, Zos. It means you're not proper Pentax fan, you know. Back in the days when people were busy comparing Kodak and Fuji films, Nikon had F70 which had modern electronic hard to understand UI and Pentax OTOH introduced MZ-5 and later MZ-5n which was absolutely brilliant instant cult classic camera. Why - just because instead of the electronic gizmotry it had pretty much the same dial controls as this Nikon. You had aperture ring on the lens with A position in case you wanted the camera to do the choosing for you. You had a shutter speed ring on top of the camera with A position in case you did not want to bother with that. You had exposure compensation ring... Ultimately you would look on top plate of the camera and see on the spot everything you needed to know in terms of photographic settings. I think this camera is absolutely brilliant. It does pretty much exactly what Pentaxians were asking for so long and probably won't see happen - a photographic camera (no video, thank you) with proper mechanical controls (no 12 page menu system, thank you so much) for the important settings that is as compatible as Nikon cameras can possibly be, including but not limited to the oldest Nikon mount lenses ever produced. It has sensibly few pixels on its sensor, it is not too big or too heavy and I reckon, given Nikon brilliance in all things mechanical as far as their top tier models go, it will also be rather reliable and joyful to operate. I have Pentax MX and it is extremely easy to operate without taking eyes off the viewfinder. The only downsize of this camera is rather high price, but I am sure soon enough it would be possible to have it for less money. All in all - Nikon is doing right things. Re: Filters?
The 'operating manual' that came with my 600 FA states that the front glass is called the PF (protect front) filter and is there to protect the front element. The PF filter is always recommended for use as it is designed to work as the part of the optical system. It makes no mention about the need to use a filter in the rear filter holder. The lens comes with 7 43mm filters including a normal, skylight, cloudy and UV along with yellow, orange and red. Yup he lists exactly the situation I said you would see effects in. Other than that has any one actually done any side by side testing to see if they see any differences? Or is it just more fun to argue without being hampered by facts? And I mean test with one filter, not ten stacked up. Re: PESO: Moonrise Over Akaroa
Thanks, Frank. It was really one of those had-to-be-there moments as it looked stunning (there were more sunset-lit hill peaks to the right).
