Filters and contrast

2013-11-14 Thread CollinB
I noticed in the camera store review of the K3 that a comparison of the 2
versions of the DA40/2.8
displayed the difference produced by coatings, between (presumably) SMC and
HD.
Has anyone come out with a set of HD filters that might contribute a
similar image improvement?

Anti-reflective coatings work by cutting the unwanted
reflection/scattering/diffusion of light (where it should not go) at each
and any air-to-glass surface. So the coating has to be wehere it can do its
work, i.e. on each and any air-to-glass surface. Perhaps even between
glasses of different refraction indexes. A filter in front of the whole lens
cannot do that.

Of course it can. Just not nearly as well or in the same fashion.
Not all that the HD coatings does is anti-reflective.
I suspect some of it is color-correcting as were the different SMC
variations.

Collin, you can put the best filter in the world on an uncoated lens,
and you will get flare because of internal reflections. All a coated
element can do is keep reflections off of the element it is applied to
at bay. Once the light has moved to another piece of glass, it's a whole
new ball game.
Lens coatings are primarily for flare protection. Any color correcting
they do is secondary, though possibly by design.

Or you may see it this way:
Independent of the lens quality a filter will add two more reflecting surfaces
reducing the overall quality. How much each of these surfaces reflect the light
and reduce the quality will depend on the coating. Uncoated each surface
reflect about 4% og the passing light. A surface with a good coating will
reflect a lot less, but I don't have the numbers of the HD-coating.

So the best solution is always to go without a filter if you don't want to
protect the front lens.

Yes. You've probably shot more LF than me, and we both know what color
correction filters can do for bw as well as enhancing color results, both
neg and reversal.
But. I'm thinking (though I might possible be wrong) that there might be an
optical improvement to using the lens coatings on the filters. (Didn't
Pentax even market SMC filters at one time?)
We improve contrast with polarizers and UV/1A filters. Why not one more
contrast improvement?

mentioned focus peaking with the K-01. What, I queried, is focus peaking? He
and others gave explanations, I did some web searches to find more. Hummph I
muttered. Not of any real concern to me.

In August participated in a workshop where I learned much more about focus
stacking, and I learned something about using Liveview. But focus peaking was
still a mystery to me. In my October workshop I learned more about stacking,
and was exposed to the benefits of HDR, something that had also been a
 mystery to me.

In my playing around since receiving my K-3 I have had an epiphany. This
stuff really works! The K-3 Liveview focus peaking capability combined with
focus stacking in post-processing is truly a game changer in macro
photography. Look at the image on the LCD, twiddle with the focus, and it is
as though a flashlight is playing across the image, highlighting the areas in
focus. And Bill reported how Liveview and face detection(!), another modern
gimmick, helped him in the studio.

The advances in camera firmware/software and the UI really do make a
difference. I still prefer the M mode to AV or TV, but I have found that TAV
can play a meaningful role. (I know, that has been around for a couple of
generations, but it is part of the total new package.) I haven't been this
enthusiastic about a new camera since I first started using HyperProgram
mode. Life is good and the K-3 is a great tool.

2013-11-14 Thread Zos Xavius
I finally read the review. IQ looks very, very good. On par with the
K-5 in terms of high ISO. Highlight recovery looks to be about equal.
The K-5 seems to edge out slightly on shadow recovery. Probably not a
big deal in 99% of shooting situations unless you really need to push
your shots 3 stops, in that case its time to learn how to expose. I
would say from what I've seen the DR and marginally more noise is
going to be a non-issue for most folks out there. So what's the fight
over? Are people with K-5s really suddenly inadequate or something?
For me I am going to stick with my K-5. Its perfect for the type of
shooting I do and I need to focus on getting better glass more than
more megapixels. From what I can tell most of my lenses wouldn't be up
to resolving 24mp from a crop anyways.

I don't pretend to be extremely accurate or well versed in terms of using my

shooting. I try to deal with tonality of my pictures in post.

So, I much rather have wider DR than more MP or more focus points, that all.
Like I said - it is subjective.

Look at the DR. The K7 is 10.6 EV, the K5 is 14.1EV, the Ricoh GR is

For me, the only thing that makes me really, really want the K-3 is the
improved focusing. Sure, I might get marginally better noise levels in
low light with my K-5 -- if I can get the thing to focus.

As it stands, though, I have to keep the K-5 simply because my computer
will buckle trying to process the 24mp files of a K-3.

But, if Ricoh were to put out a 16mp body with the K-3's focusing system
-- well, now. That would be something.

camera. I usually set it to P-mode, dial in some -0.7Ev correction and go on
shooting. I try to deal with tonality of my pictures in post.

So, I much rather have wider DR than more MP or more focus points, that all.
Like I said - it is subjective.

Oh, and like Larry pointed out - the more DR I have at base ISO, the more DR
am I going to have at higher ISOs...

Does it make sense now? Do I sound pessimistic?

Boris, it isn't subjective at all. This is one of those areas where DXO
is a good resource.

Look at the DR. The K7 is 10.6 EV, the K5 is 14.1EV, the Ricoh GR is
13.5EV. They don't have the K3 tested yet, but I'm thinking it will
probably place very close to the GR, based on what I've see coming off
the camera.
We know that the Samsung sensors used in the K20 and K7 never performed
the way they were supposed to, if they had, it's doubtful that Pentax
would have moved to Sony sensors in subsequent models.
This is one of those times when being a professional pessimist is biting
your ass.

Honest Ed's is a Toronto institution, a discount store which his been around
for about 65 years. Ed himself passed about five or six years ago, and now the
anachronism with the creaky wooden floors and incandescent light marquis-style
outdoor signage may be on the market, possibly to make way for condos.

Truth be told I don't go there that often and when I do I rarely buy. But it's
an experience. And the only place around that still uses hand-painted signs:

displayed the difference produced by coatings, between (presumably) SMC and
HD.
Has anyone come out with a set of HD filters that might contribute a

Camera Strap

2013-11-14 Thread Steve Cottrell
Does anyone use any of the camera straps of the type that don't attach
to the normal camera strap mounts - rather they attach to a mechanism,
that screws into the tripod mount on the base plate, allowing the camera
to be carried upside down over the shoulder?

Any recommendations / pointers to manufacturers?

THANKS

Re: PESO: Nov 2013 Red-tail

2013-11-14 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Bruce. As I mentioned in an earlier response, this hawk was in a tree
that wasn't that tall and, being too close when they fly can be really
frustrating  in that they are easily lost by the AF. I cranked the focal length
from 300mm to 120mm. (checked  ARC) When I downloaded the images I was
surprised by how small a hawk image I had. As a result, I did a serious  crop
to 'prox 20% of the original frame. I believe it held up surprisingly well
considering.
This is a quality lens belied by it's price. It simply needs to be longer. ;-)

Great shot!  I love the 'pose' you have captured here.  The lighting is great
too.  The only thing that is too bad is to not have a super duper sharp lens
that could take this shot to the highest level.  With the lens you used,  I
think you have done very excellent work.  I'm jealous!

Re: Camera Strap

2013-11-14 Thread Stan Halpin
Not exactly what you are asking for, but FWIW...

I have used a simple attachment from strapbuddy.com (via BH or Adorama). A
simple circular plate with slightly offset slot. Attach plate to camera, strap
to slot, other end of strap to left-side lug on camera, and the camera is
oriented vertically rather than horizontally. Like you could do on the LX with
the front grip extender IIRC. Simple, secure, easy to attach, cheap.

Works ok, I have sworn off straps for the time being, will reassemble
everything the next time I am in a travel-with-two-cameras mode.

Yep. I use a Black Rapid sling style strap. A steel loop screws into the trips
hole and a swiveling steel hook connects to it. The hook attaches to a strap by
means of a sliding loop. The strap hangs off the opposite shoulder with the
camera at your side. You simply lift it to shoot. Works great. Will never go
back to neck straps.

Re: Camera Strap

2013-11-14 Thread Peter Loveday
I love my Luma Loop straps. Unfortunately they don't make them any more
(some patent dispute with black rapid I think).

I actually use my loop attached to one of the strap rings rather than the
tripod screw/QR plate, I find it works better for me. The quick release on
the strap is very handy for those times I want to untether it from my
shoulder (I also have a camdapter hand strap/QR plate on there for such
occasions).

Luma have a new Cinch strap, but I've not tried it so can't really
comment. I seems to operate quite differently.

I always found the actual blackrapids somewhat bulkier, but others swear by
them.

Either way, 'd never go back to a neckstrap now.. just seems so clunky and
awkward.

Re: Camera Strap

2013-11-14 Thread Steve Cottrell
Thanks for all the great replies. Actually not for me, rather for Stef.

Bob W bequeathed him a Lumaloop strap some time ago, like this one:

http://photo.it-enquirer.com/files/2011/06/lumaloop.jpg

...but the quick release mech - although undoubtedly strong - causes
slight worry with the weight of an EOS-1DmIIn and 16-35/4 and sometimes
even a 420EX flash - that's some weight!

Situation resolved: the manfrotto QR plate (already part of his kit)
screwed into the tripod mount on the baseplate also has a D-rind
attached, so onto that clips a Lowepro Deluxe Shoulder Strap that I donated:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/40zDictator/Camera-6.jpg

Appreciate the input folks, thanks again.

Aside: while researching, I came across what surely ranks as the most
useless camera accessory of all time

I have decided to come into the 21st Century. No, I have decided to embrace it!

In the late spring this year Mark C. posted some of his stunning dragonfly
shots and mentioned focus stacking. In the discussion of his images he
mentioned focus peaking with the K-01.

In my October workshop I learned more about stacking,
and was exposed to the benefits of HDR, something that had also been a mystery
to me.

In my playing around since receiving my K-3 I have had an epiphany. This stuff
really works! The K-3 Liveview focus peaking capability combined with focus
stacking in post-processing is truly a game changer in macro photography. Look
at the image on the LCD, twiddle with the focus, and it is as though a
flashlight is playing across the image, highlighting the areas in focus. And
Bill reported how Liveview and face detection(!), another modern gimmick,
helped him in the studio.

The advances in camera firmware/software and the UI really do make a
difference. I still prefer the M mode to AV or TV, but I have found that TAV
can play a meaningful role. (I know, that has been around for a couple of
generations, but it is part of the total new package.) I haven't been this
enthusiastic about a new camera since I first started using HyperProgram mode.
Life is good and the K-3 is a great tool.

You might be able to find it for less.

I don't use the button that comes with it. The version I bought has a
locking snap hook so I can hook it to the D-ring on my QR plate
(Manfrotto RC2/200PL-14) use the same strap when I change between the
K10D K20D.

THANKS

That's a valid point, I wouldn't dare to do that with my camera.

Wasn't there a flap a while back where someone bought a NEW camera from
one of the Hong Kong dealers when it arrived it turned out to be one
of the cameras he'd used (and abused) for making one of his videos?

No joy with 500px. There's a pop-over ad that won't go away unless you

Impressive, but you could do a lot with that pic with Lightroom or similar.
