Filters and contrast
I noticed in the camera store review of the K3 that a comparison of the 2 versions of the DA40/2.8 displayed the difference produced by coatings, between (presumably) SMC and HD. Has anyone come out with a set of HD filters that might contribute a similar image improvement? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Filters and contrast
Anti-reflective coatings work by cutting the unwanted reflection/scattering/diffusion of light (where it should not go) at each and any air-to-glass surface. So the coating has to be wehere it can do its work, i.e. on each and any air-to-glass surface. Perhaps even between glasses of different refraction indexes. A filter in front of the whole lens cannot do that. Collin, you can put the best filter in the world on an uncoated lens, and you will get flare because of internal reflections. All a coated element can do is keep reflections off of the element it is applied to at bay. Once the light has moved to another piece of glass, it's a whole new ball game. Or you may see it this way: Independent of the lens quality a filter will add two more reflecting surfaces reducing the overall quality. How much each of these surfaces reflect the light and reduce the quality will depend on the coating. Uncoated each surface reflect about 4% og the passing light. A surface with a good coating will reflect a lot less, but I don't have the numbers of the HD-coating. So the best solution is always to go without a filter if you don't want to protect the front lens. You've probably shot more LF than me, and we both know what color correction filters can do for bw as well as enhancing color results, both neg and reversal. But. I'm thinking (though I might possible be wrong) that there might be an optical improvement to using the lens coatings on the filters. (Didn't Pentax even market SMC filters at one time?) What, I queried, is focus peaking? He and others gave explanations, I did some web searches to find more. Hummph I muttered. Not of any real concern to me. In August participated in a workshop where I learned much more about focus stacking, and I learned something about using Liveview. But focus peaking was still a mystery to me. In my October workshop I learned more about stacking, and was exposed to the benefits of HDR, something that had also been a mystery to me. In my playing around since receiving my K-3 I have had an epiphany. This stuff really works! The K-3 Liveview focus peaking capability combined with focus stacking in post-processing is truly a game changer in macro photography. Look at the image on the LCD, twiddle with the focus, and it is as though a flashlight is playing across the image, highlighting the areas in focus. And Bill reported how Liveview and face detection(!), another modern gimmick, helped him in the studio. The advances in camera firmware/software and the UI really do make a difference. I still prefer the M mode to AV or TV, but I have found that TAV can play a meaningful role. (I know, that has been around for a couple of generations, but it is part of the total new package.) A nice set. I like the shot of the tables, but it might benefit from slightly wider framing. (Of course if you were shooting with a prime that may not have been possible.) I also like the juxtaposition of the Empire State Building with the foreground architecture. The ship details don't do much for me. I like the torn posters. Re: K-3 review as seen through the eyes of the PF
I finally read the review. IQ looks very, very good. On par with the K-5 in terms of high ISO. Highlight recovery looks to be about equal. The K-5 seems to edge out slightly on shadow recovery. Probably not a big deal in 99% of shooting situations unless you really need to push your shots 3 stops, in that case its time to learn how to expose. I would say from what I've seen the DR and marginally more noise is going to be a non-issue for most folks out there. So what's the fight over? Are people with K-5s really suddenly inadequate or something? For me I am going to stick with my K-5. Its perfect for the type of shooting I do and I need to focus on getting better glass more than more megapixels. Re: PESO: Nov 2013 Red-tail
Thanks, Bruce. As I mentioned in an earlier response, this hawk was in a tree that wasn't that tall and, being too close when they fly can be really frustrating in that they are easily lost by the AF. I cranked the focal length from 300mm to 120mm. (checked ARC) When I downloaded the images I was surprised by how small a hawk image I had. As a result, I did a serious crop to 'prox 20% of the original frame. I believe it held up surprisingly well considering. This is a quality lens belied by it's price. It simply needs to be longer. ;-) Jack - Original Message - From: Bruce bkday...@daytonphoto.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Cc: Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 10:57 AM Subject: Re: PESO: Nov 2013 Red-tail Great shot! Not exactly what you are asking for, but FWIW... I have used a simple attachment from strapbuddy.com (via BH or Adorama). A simple circular plate with slightly offset slot. Attach plate to camera, strap to slot, other end of strap to left-side lug on camera, and the camera is oriented vertically rather than horizontally. Like you could do on the LX with the front grip extender IIRC. Simple, secure, easy to attach, cheap. Re: Camera Strap
I love my Luma Loop straps. Unfortunately they don't make them any more (some patent dispute with black rapid I think). I actually use my loop attached to one of the strap rings rather than the tripod screw/QR plate, I find it works better for me. The quick release on the strap is very handy for those times I want to untether it from my shoulder (I also have a camdapter hand strap/QR plate on there for such occasions). Luma have a new Cinch strap, but I've not tried it so can't really comment. I seems to operate quite differently. I always found the actual blackrapids somewhat bulkier, but others swear by them. Either way, 'd never go back to a neckstrap now.. just seems so clunky and awkward. - Peter -Original Message- From: Steve Cottrell Sent: Friday, November 15, 2013 5:50 AM To: pentax list Subject: Camera Strap Does anyone use any of the camera straps of the type that don't attach to the normal camera strap mounts - rather they attach to a mechanism, that screws into the tripod mount on the base plate, allowing the camera to be carried upside down over the shoulder? Thanks for all the great replies. Actually not for me, rather for Stef. Bob W bequeathed him a Lumaloop strap some time ago, like this one: http://photo.it-enquirer.com/files/2011/06/lumaloop.jpg ...but the quick release mech - although undoubtedly strong - causes slight worry with the weight of an EOS-1DmIIn and 16-35/4 and sometimes even a 420EX flash - that's some weight! Situation resolved: the manfrotto QR plate (already part of his kit) screwed into the tripod mount on the baseplate also has a D-rind attached, so onto that clips a Lowepro Deluxe Shoulder Strap that I donated: http://slrhut.co.uk/content/products-accessories/8547_1.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/40zDictator/Camera-6.jpg Appreciate the input folks, thanks again. In the late spring this year Mark C. posted some of his stunning dragonfly shots and mentioned focus stacking. In the discussion of his images he mentioned focus peaking with the K-01. What, I queried, is focus peaking? (I know, that has been around for a couple of generations, but it is part of the total new package.) I haven't been this enthusiastic about a new camera since I first started using HyperProgram mode. Life is good and the K-3 is a great tool. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
