It's damn near impossible to go horribly wrong with any modern DSLR. The
big advantage of Canon is that everyone has one, it's easy to get lenses

Re: Camera purchase advice

Dan,

I recently had a friend asking for an advice in a similar situation.
I explained pro's and con's of different options, but I recommended
something like a micro-4/3. (And he and his daughter were vrey happy.)

I don't think a DSLR is warranted at this point unless somebody
specifically wants a DSLR (and has some good idea why).

(I wouldn't recommend Pentax Q. - That's more of an anthusiast toy, not
the main camera.)

Alternatively, if interchangeable lenses are not a must, I'd suggest
something like Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 with a fast (1.4 or 1.7) lens

and plenty of controls.
There are similar cameras from 3-4 other makers, including Canon, but
I like advanced P&S from Panasonic, so, I don't recall other models at the
moment.

Re: After-market battery charger

2015-05-18 Thread Richard Dell

John,

Oh my ... as a collector, you turned me on to another charger to add to
my wish list !!

It looks great, and the adapter plates are reasonable in cost ...
I'll have to pick up a couple of the plates to use with my general
purpose chargers

(better than using the built-in adjustable spring-loaded contacts)

I use mostly two of the Wasabi chargers, bought each with a pair of
spare generic batteries,
the cigarette adapter that comes with them ... I tend to leave a charger
in the car all the time,
and one in the camera pack, so its nice to have two. And the Wasabi's
are small.

Both my general purpose chargers, an MH-C777PlusII and a Triton EQ,
work in the car,
although the MAHA unit has reduced NiMH capabilites using a 12 volt
input. Useful
if you might run into unusual batteries to charge on the road, say a
companions cell phone,

but the dedicated units such as the Wasabis are more useful.

On 5/18/2015 11:48 AM, John wrote:

I carry a spare battery for the K-3, but I don't have any way to
recharge a depleted battery until I get to somewhere I can plug the
charger into an AC outlet. When I'm out and about, there's no where I
can leave the charger plugged in until the battery is recharged.

I have an after-market charger for the K10D/K20D batteries that plugs
into the cigarette lighter socket in my car. I'm looking into something
similar for the K-3.

I ran across this charger at B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/837324-REG/watson_d_3704_duo_lcd_charger_f_pentax.html

It has the adapter to plug into the cigarette lighter socket. It also
has interchangeable plates, so I could use it to charge both D-LI90 &
D-LI50 batteries ...

http://www.poweredbywatson.com/detail?sku=836526

... and if the putative Full-Frame Pentax DSLR uses still another
battery, I could probably find a plate to fit it as well.

Does anyone on the list have experience using the Watson charger,
especially in a mobile environment?

Re: After-market battery charger

2015-05-18 Thread P.J. Alling
I've never used one of their chargers but I've got a spare Watson
Battery for the K-5II, it's probably the best aftermarket battery I've
ever used. For comparison the Flashpoint Li50 I picked up for the K20D
while having a higher nominal power rating lasts about half as long
shooting as the original Pentax battery, the Watson, well it seems to
hold more power than the Pentax though rated slightly lower. If their
batteries are any guide...

Does anyone on the list have experience using the Watson charger,

Re: Camera purchase advice

2015-05-18 Thread P.J. Alling
You really didn't give enough info in some ways. If shooting video is
in any way important I wouldn't recommend any Pentax product, but for
stills bang the buck right now deal, KEH.com has refurbished K-30s for
less than $300.00 add the kit lens for about $60 and she's good to go.
B&H has the K-50 in a two lens kit for about $100 more. As for EVIL
cameras, I haven't played with any in a while, but a year ago when I
looked at Fuji Sony and Olympus/Panasonic cameras I thought that Sony
had the best EVF, and the A6000 is the most affordable that still has a
viewfinder. If she doesn't need a large lens selection, their kit
lenses are supposed to be pretty good, better for Video as well.

If she wants to use her FD lenses with the field of view she is used to,
the Sony full frame mirrorless are nice. If she want;s to use her FD
lenses, doesn't mind a little extra reach and wants a shooting
experience similar to her old FTb, the Fuji X-T1 is nice, the recently
announced X-T10 looks nice, though it is definitely a feature downgrade
to the X-T1.
Those are about her best options for using her old lenses. If she isn't
actually that big on using them, then any DSLR system is good these
days, obviously I have a Pentax bias.

new printer report - Epson SureColor P600

2015-05-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've had time now to make about twenty test prints with the P600 to compare
against the same photos on the same paper/sizing as I previously made. The
older prints are all good, but the new ink set shows its mettle: I think all my
cameras have now picked up another stop or so of dynamic range and have finer
grained micro-contrasts in the prints. Optimizing my rendering for the new
printer, I think I've just gained a useful increment in processing capability.

The printer is bulkier looking than the R2400 but takes up about the same
amount of working space. Closed up, it's a bit more regular in size so making a
simple cover for it is easier. In use, the new control panel is very handy,
gives an instant readout of the the ink supply, and having both the PK and MK
blacks available with Auto Switching enabled is a big convenience. (Note that
switching does consume a bit of ink and time, particularly going from MK to PK.
There is an option to "Save Ink" which speeds up the switch and cuts ink
consumption by 50% or more, but it's still worthwhile to batch up prints to
papers that need the different ink and minimize switching, and it is best to
set the default for the inks you are going to use most.)

The P600 instruction manuals are pretty nicely put together: I've been able to
find everything I needed to know quickly and easily. Likewise, paper profiles
for the Red River, Hahnemühle, Moab, and Epson papers I use have been both
available and easy to find. Of course, I have to update all my Lightroom
printing presets but I would need to do that for any new printer.

The only negative to the P600 I've found so far is that Hahnemühle Bamboo paper
in 8.5x11 inch sheet size is a bit more of a pain to load properly due to its
strong tendency to curl; it's fine in 13x19 inch size sheets. It will load, it
just takes more fussing and coaxing. Bamboo is a wonderful paper, though, so
I'll keep using it.

The P600 has a bunch of useful new features and is a bit different to load …
Likely more reliable although a bit slower in operation. Altogether, I'm happy
with it.

Technically, it's the entrance pupil of the lens that you're adjusting
for. (Every one refers to it as the "nodal point", but that's
technically a different point within the lens – though you'd need a
lens designer to explain the difference).

Someone's trying to compile an online database of Entrance Pupil
points for various lenses, but as of now there's only one Pentax lens
listed (the 10-17 fisheye):
http://wiki.panotools.org/Entrance_Pupil_Database

The Entrance Pupil is there the lens diaphragm *appears* to be when
the lens is viewed from the front. In my experience, just looking into
the lens and guestimating the distance works for all but the most
critical work. There are various ways of being more precise about it,
but in general you line up two objects, one very close to the camera
and one very far away, and change the position of the camera forward
and back on your pano head until the two objects don't change
positions relative to each other when the camera is panned left-right
(using live view is best for this).

Re: OT - IR Conversion

Thanks, Mark—those links were really helpful. Given the importance of live
view when shooting with a DSLR, converting my k7 seems like a better

so I wouldn’t use it, but the k-7 I could and the extra advantage would be it
is much smaller and lighter than my K10 and k20.

body with an adapter.

She could probably get an amazing deal on a K-5 II about now, or even a
really good deal on a K3. What's her budget?

You can use eneloops or other hybrids in cameras that us AA batteries.

Any suggestions I can pass on?
