That's called "randonnée" or "audax". The real hardcore don't use tents and
sleeping bags, but sleep in their clothes in bus shelters or on the floor of
halls.

The most famous event is Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP). One of our very own PDMLers
is doing it this year - 16-20 August. Perhaps he'll show himself and we can
follow his exploits online.

Re: OT but still about cameras. Dash Cameras.

2015-08-02 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi Bill

I got a Smart Witness SVC1080

You can see the computer software interface here:

Very easy to set up, I have on in my Land Rover, only forward facing
though. I do have a rear-mounted camera that feeds a separate monitor on
my dash which I just use for reversing as I have zero rear visibility by
eye. The rear camera is pointed downwards so I can see the two rear
lower corners for when i am reversing and parallel parking etc. The
angle unfortunately doesn't allow me to see the horizon in the upper
part, so something I will change in future as being able to record rear
vision is an excellent idea.

As far as the SVC1080 goes, it gives a hug wide angle view in HD 30fps
video - useful to be able to resolve car registration plates that might
only pass by very quickly at the edge of frame. The device records speed
and position via GPS and this is seen in the playback software. Also
records G force and impact severity. The software is pretty easy to use
on the computer, allowing quicktime movs to be exported of any time
frame. If I come across an incident, I simply note time of day and later
can easily retrieve the mishap for public humiliation. As for actual
incidents involving my vehicle, none yet - but of course you never break
down when you carry a tool kit...

The camera takes Micro SD cards and comes with either a 4GB/ 16GB / 32
GB card supplied. I got mine cheaply of an Amazon seller after it was
returned to a retailer, just minus the instructions (which I got from
the net anyway) and cost me 114 GBP. Note that the device records
indefinitely, wiping over old data as it goes. This gives plenty of
recording time to retrieve later - as long as you don't have the 4GB
card installed. I use a 32GB card and can go back a couple of days in
journey time - and I do about 150 miles a day on average. In practice
you would retrieve an incident at the end of the same day anyway.

The Micro SD card is easy to remove while the device is in situ, and the
fitting kit is straightforward. Not much else to say - does what it says
on the box. Feels very reassuring to have it aboard and I am sure will
prove very useful ultimately.

Cheers

Where are you cruising from?

The journey you took from Copenhagen to Oslo can be difficult because
once you clear the Danish peninsula you are open to the very long
'fetch' from the North Sea -and with the prevailing westerlies, the sea
can build up nicely as you transit - beam on to the sea - towards
Norway. Not pleasant aboard a boat with no sail - no matter how large!

I sailed that route aboard a 60 foot yacht in such a sea with 40 knots
of wind across the deck and it was exhilarating, but appreciate many
would find it very uncomfortable.

That said, from the western Baltic to St Pete's in the summer months
should not be a problem - in the summer months that region is not
usually bothered by gales. If anything, the wind will generally be a
following one, so aboard a ship should be very pleasant. Gets very warm
in the summer and the long daylight hours are a big bonus. I'm looking
forward to doing some cruising up there in years to come - although in
something a bit smaller: 35 feet-ish. Can't wait!

Definitely go for it.

Re: OT: Baltic Cruises

2015-08-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Steve.

The cruise I was looking at starts and ends in Stockholm. Others go
from Amsterdam.

If we have a following wind eastbound, we should then have a head wind
westbound. Would that make it rougher? How are conditions in the
early fall?

Re: Geso :Tour De Farms

2015-08-02 Thread Subash
hi,

they are also called BRMs (brevet randonneur mondiaux) and since these
are long distance endurance events to be completed within stipulated
times, and the clock is always ticking, taking tents and sleeping bags
is unthinkable because of the weight. and yes, bus shelters are where we
mostly catch 40 winks before plodding on into the night...

like Bob said, the most prestigious and the oldest of them all is the
Paris-Brest-Brest randonnee, first held in 1891, now held every four
years. the next one is happening this month, from the 16 to the 20th.
1230 km to be done in 90 hours. about 6090 riders from 66 countries are
participating this year. and there are about 55 of us from india doing
it, including two women.

if i remember right, i think Stan Halpin did this in 1987 or so.

really looking forward to it. this will also be my first time in paris.
not taking a pentax though. just a p&s (rx 100). hoping to finish the
brevet and hoping to bring back some memorable photos. thanks for the
mention Bob.

regards, subash

p.s.: still lurking here but not contributing much because i haven't
done any worthwhile photography for a couple of years.

That's interesting, Bob. Rugged types huh? Here 500 or so request

That's called "randonn?e" or "audax". The real hardcore don't use
tents and sleeping bags, but sleep in their clothes in bus shelters or
on the floor of halls.

The most famous event is Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP). One of our very own
PDMLers is doing it this year - 16-20 August. Perhaps he'll show
himself and we can follow his exploits online.

This came as quite a surprise. I have been using Photo.net to store
most of my images that I intend to show here or share with others for
years, but this is my first photo of the day.

BTW, I chose another image from the same shoot for my PESO here of the
Sphinx or False Hummingbird moth, although this was among those chosen
for my GESO of the moth shoot.

If it is of any comfort to you, the model, Dorrie, fully participates
in and approves of every part of the image creation process.

I think this is where the whole "exploitation" via sexualization and
objectification argument falls on it's face.
When the subject is a willing participant in the process, who is being
exploited?

Who is sexualizing the model? Is it the photographer who has taken a
picture of the model? The artist who sketches or paints a likeness of
the model?

Or is it the viewer who sexualizes and objectifies the model with his or
her own preconceptions?

There is a very tired old argument that art was invented to get women
out of their clothes. Perhaps it is true, perhaps it isn't, but the
argument ignores the reality that the subject has to be a willing
participant in the process for the process to happen, which effectively
torpedoes the whole exploitation argument.

This is almost an aside, and should go into another post, but the image
in question is quite nice, though not one of the best pictures I've seen
you do of Dorrie.

Re: PESO ~ Shadow play

2015-08-02 Thread Knarf
So there's a photo of a woman naked above the waist and the viewer has
sexualized her?

Are you serious?

Bruce took that photo knowing that part of its appeal would be sexual. And
Dorrie agreed to have the photo taken, knowing that sex was a part of it.

Does that mean Bruce exploited Dorrie? No.

By agreeing to be photographed in that way (indeed, being part of the creative
process) was Dorrie being exploited? Yeah, I think so.

Not by Bruce but by a society that puts a value on the sexualization and
objectification of women. Being a consenting part of the process doesn't mean
one isn't being exploited.

We're all socialized to see this as normal and acceptable but does that mean
it's okay?

Men and women are portrayed far differently by the media. Yes, men can be
sexualized, but in a very different way, and certainly far less frequently than
women.

My problem isn't necessarily with this individual photo or with Bruce. It's
that this is a part of the exploitation and objectification that goes on every
day on TV, in movies, magazines, and advertising of all kinds. Women ~are~
treated differently than men especially in sexual portrayals, and to the extent
that this photo is a part of that, I feel very uncomfortable.

Thanks for listening,

frank

Are you serious?

If you see sexualization, then that is what you see.
It may not be what someone else sees.

Bruce took that photo knowing that part of its appeal would be
sexual. And Dorrie agreed to have the photo taken, knowing that sex
was a part of it.

Were you there?

Does that mean Bruce exploited Dorrie? No.

By agreeing to be photographed in that way (indeed, being part of the
creative process) was Dorrie being exploited? Yeah, I think so.

Generally speaking, exploitation doesn't involve consent.

Not by Bruce but by a society that puts a value on the sexualization
and objectification of women. Being a consenting part of the process
doesn't mean one isn't being exploited.

Now it's my turn to ask if you are serious.
Exploitation: "the action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order
to benefit from their work."

Was the model treated unfairly? Did Bruce have to threaten her or drug
her into a stupor to get her to pose?

The whole "exploitation" thing is a construct of people who want to
control others through shaming them.

If a person wants to be exploited, they will be exploited.
Oops, if they want to be exploited, that takes away the unfair part of
the definition.

We're all socialized to see this as normal and acceptable but does
that mean it's okay?

If it's normal and acceptable, then by definition it's okay.

Men and women are portrayed far differently by the media. Yes, men
can be sexualized, but in a very different way, and certainly far
less frequently than women.

My problem isn't necessarily with this individual photo or with
Bruce. It's that this is a part of the exploitation and
objectification that goes on every day on TV, in movies, magazines,
and advertising of all kinds. Women ~are~ treated differently than
men especially in sexual portrayals, and to the extent that this
photo is a part of that, I feel very uncomfortable.

If a person is comfortable with the process, then your discomfort is
your problem, and is something that you are trying to project onto them.

Not really because the way you've presented it is rather shallow and doesn't
take into account all sorts of factors, such as economic power, which tend on
average to reduce women's options compared to men's in many ways and to
normalise other options, such as exploiting their body.

Re: OT but still about cameras. Dash Cameras.

2015-08-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Bill,

For the reasons similar to yours, I've been looking for a dash camera on
and off. I couldn't single out any particular cam (and that probably
prevented me from buying one).
Also, I concluded that user reviews are important, as some cameras fall
short on delivering the quality despite the specs.
Here is one of the review sites that I bookmarked (either for the summary
table or for the forum as well):

https://dashcamtalk.com/

So, here a brief summary of what I consider important for consideration
(YMMV):
1. A must (most of them do): recording on a flash memory card, with
automatic rotation (writing over the oldest ones.

2. Covers wide enough angle of view.
3. Resolution: Should be sufficient to distinguish the license plate
of the other vehicle. (For "hit-and-run" type of situations.)
It looks like 1080p is a reasonable optimum, but definitely not less than
720p?

4. The same for fps.
5. Night vision should provide a reasonable functionality for the same.
6. Removable vs. permanently mounted and discrete vs. "in your face"
(Is it an attractive target for someone to break into the car).
7. Rear view vs dual cam vs none.
8. Reliability and variation of quality (QC).
(This includes overheating with some cameras resulting in a blurry
picture)

Other features that could be useful but not a deal breaker:

9. Motion- or impact-activated (for the parked vehicle being hit or
vandalized) -- "G-sensor".

10. Working from its own battery for the parked vehicle.
11. GPS.
12. Built-in screen

The last time I looked (about a year ago), - Amazon.com had poor selection
of such cameras, as many of them were made by companies in Asia (China).
eBay had a broader selection (both toward the better and worse ends of the
spectrum).

E.g. in late 2013 or early 2014, I bookmarked this ebay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/estore009
because they had reasonable and comprehensive listings for dash cameras,
including comparison tables for the features.

It is still in existence and selling those. That's all I can say.

I might be wrong, but it looks like some more western companies are
standing behind newer models (and sell them on Amazon).

HTH,

Igor

don't. Anyway, as I now see the benefit of having one, I look to the
wisdom of the list for advice on what is a good dash cam. I'm not looking
for the cheapest, I don't mind spending a bit of coin. I'm wondering if
something with a reverse cam wouldn't be a bad idea. My truck is pretty

Mt reseller of choice on this will probably be amazon.ca

She's showing her tits, Bill. Please show me an adult who doesn't think that's
sexual! At this point I'm not even saying it's bad, but to deny it's sexual?

" >Generally speaking, exploitation doesn't involve consent."

I guess it depends on what "consent" means, doesn't it? Power, who has it and
who doesn't, has a huge part to play whether one can be said to truly consent.

Do think that blacks working on the railways back in the '40s and 50's were
exploited? They did demeaning work, never rose to supervisory positions yet
they got decent pay compared to many in their community. Whites got paid much
more and had much better working conditions. The fact that blacks "agreed" to
the jobs and pay doesn't mean they weren't exploited.

" >If it's normal and acceptable, then by definition it's okay."

By your definition slavery was "okay".

" >If a person is comfortable with the process, then your discomfort is
>your problem, and is something that you are trying to project onto
>them."

Actually I think the problem is that so many are comfortable with this. I think
the fact that so many don't see a disparity between portrayals of men and women
in the media is the problem. I think the fact that so many see the disparity
and are okay with it is the problem.

frank

I vaguely remember from my school days that "Pork Bellies" was a
derisive slang term for the sutlers & other camp-following "merchants"
who trailed along behind the the Union Armies during the American Civil
War ... derived from the belly being the lowest part of the pig.

Today they'd be described as whale-shit, there being nothing lower

price is around $100 per day but the hot showers alone are almost
worth that after riding 60 miles in humid Iowa.

I went by this spot at noon just after they were set up. I visualized
how this would look at sunset and returned with the K-3 & 50mm and
went on to the other two camps pictured. The less organized camp was a
riding club who reserved the spot. By the way many riders carry their
sleeping bags etc on the bikes and sleep where they drop.

I especially like the photo of the tent-camp with the (morning?)

While I see one photo with different tents, I am surprised to see such a

only pass by very quickly at the edge of frame.

Cheers

On 1/8/15, Bill, discombobulated, unleashed:

I've decided I need a dash camera. A guy sideswiped me the other day,
and now I am in a he said/she said situation with the other driver.
If I had a dash cam, I would have had proof of what the other driver
did, but I don't.
Anyway, as I now see the benefit of having one, I look to the wisdom of
the list for advice on what is a good dash cam. I'm not looking for the
cheapest, I don't mind spending a bit of coin.
I'm wondering if something with a reverse cam wouldn't be a bad idea. My
truck is pretty much a rolling blind spot in reverse, backing up is a
leap of faith.
Mt reseller of choice on this will probably be amazon.ca

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks

Tried my wife's email address and a different credit card, but...?

2015-08-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Darren,

I use the same approach in researching item, but let me warn you about
this product. Do not trust the reviews score, instead read a few negative
reviews.

It was introduce to Amazon less than half a month ago (July 22, 2015):
http://camelcamelcamel.com/Vafru-NHD-1080P-170Degrees-dashboard-camcorder/product/B010D8MBD2

If you read the last two 2-star reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/Vafru-NHD-1080P-170Degrees-dashboard-camcorder/product-reviews/B010D8MBD2/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_2?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=recent&reviewerType=all_reviews&filterByStar=two_star&pageNumber=1
you can see the real reviews. I suspect most of the 5-star reviews are
fake or something is wrong with them (e.g. those guys got the item for
free, as one of the authors suggested).

Look, e.g. at these reviewers (I picked them randomly):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/AQ71TXXH1QL6B/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1P8ABIXH0EO5C/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A3C4XX14QZG589/
All the product they reviewed are by Vafru, all within the same days, and
all are 5-stars.

Really?
I bet, the rest of those 5-star reviews are the same way.

I wouldn't buy any Vafru products.

HTH,

Igor

85% of reviews giving it 5 stars.

From what I understood, some have low-light (possibly IR?) sensitivity,
while others rely on what shows in the headlights. Baby monitors and
surveillance IP cams that are in a comparable price range have somewhat
similar properties, and seem to provide similar quantity images.

Re: PESO: White Hibiscus

2015-08-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Don and Paul.

This is a hardy hibiscus, Paul. Unlike a Rose of Sharon, it dies back
to the ground over the winter, new shoots emerge in the spring, and
the blooms come out in July. It is pretty prolific once it starts to
bloom. Here's what the bush looks like:

There were a few blooms that were even larger, but they were fading or
partly eaten by Japanese Beetles.

Yes, Don, pure white is bit unusual for Hibiscus flowers. Most are
red, yellow, pink or white with red or pink centers. The State Flower
of Hawaii is a native yellow hibiscus:
