Re: K-1 Pentax M series lens support
I've read a few previews of the K-1 at a number of different sites, and a lot of them make a big deal of it's backward compatibility with K and M lenses. The only site that actually went into any detail was the Pentax Fora where they described the green button kludge. To those of us who've used Pentax DSLRs this isn't a big deal they have all done that, since the first or second firmware update for the *ist-D. Wide open metering, /that/ would be a big deal. One of the lenses I use regularly is the M 85mm f2.0. On film it was a little soft wide open especially away from the center of the frame, (probably because it was designed primarily for portraits), on APS-C digital it's pretty sharp wide open corner to corner, more than good enough for the resolution of up to a 16mp sensor. Unfortunately I use it a lot in very dark available light situations, because it's relatively fast, and compact, (really about the same size as a 55mm f1.8), and using stop down metering it's really easy to run out of the meters e.v. range and get very bad suggestions for exposure using the green button. I was really hoping to get an aperture simulator back almost entirely for that lens. On 2/23/2016 9:36 PM, mail1 wrote: Will the K-! support Pentax M series lens? Sorry. I hadn't bothered to go look in my camera bag. The cord is about 3 foot long. Still it works fine. It's long enough that I can make a loop that lets it hang from the tripod without pulling on the camera. AFAIK, the maximum delay built into the camera using the IR remote is 3 seconds. You can combine the camera self timer delay with the intervalometer delay. Once the intervalometer triggers the camera the red light & beeper come on to let you know it's about to take a photo. Re: Extremely disappointed: K-1 does not appear to work with ...
From: Mark C The only issue with a wireless release is lack of a bulb setting. AFAIK, you need a cabled release for that. Too bad the K1 does not have T as well as B shutter mode. Bulb mode with IR remote works fine for me on the K3, and as far as I recall worked fine with previous cameras too. I do find setting CF7 (Bulb Mode) to be 'Mode2' (press-start / press-stop) rather than 'Mode1' (press-and-hold) to be somewhat more practical with the IR remote, but it does work in either. - Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT -- So my prediction that no one would ever release a Mirrorless camera that took SLR lenses was wrong.
Looks like Sigma has introduced a pair of Mirrorless cameras into their SA mount system. Unlike Pentax the cameras don't look to be designed by Mark Newson and do have actual EFVs, (viewfinders), built into their bodies. Unlike the truly bizarre looking Quatro fixed lens cameras they've been making these actually look practical. -- I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying. -- Woody Allen -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Another new Ricoh camera released...
I know this one won’t get the same level of excitement as the K-1, but still… The Ricoh WG-M2 Action Camera is available for pre-order from B&H (and presumably the outlets) @ $299.95. Well under $300 as they say in the marketing world. I bought the WG-M1 on a whim last fall when it was selling for a close-out price of $99. I don’t have, have never even held onto, a GoPro, but these WG-Mx seem to be an attempt to fit into the GoPro niche. Small, light weight, durable, waterproof, capable of video or stills or time lapse. When we went through the Panama Canal last fall I had one strapped to the balcony railing, got a nice time lapse showing us going through the first set of locks. There are many strange design bugs, or features, on the WG-M1, it will be interesting to see if they make changes for the new version. E.g., the camera always without fail will be in video mode when the power is turned on. So you always have to fiddle with the menu to get it into still mode i=f that is what you want. There is similarly no memory for previous setting for still or video mode with respect to angle of view (zoom level) or much of anything else. (The zoom options are Wide, Really Wide, REALLY REALLY Wide.) So you turn it on, do a menu dance to set it up, shoot a frame or two. Slip it into your pocket, walk a few feet, see another photo op, do the whole process again. Very weird. Hopefully the WG-M2 comes with more usable interface. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Nicole seems to be blocked again
Same as I use, Nicole. Be sure to set Mail to default to plain text only. I find that occasionally it switches to rich text on replies, so I always check the mode before sending. As aside, using the iCloud web Mail client always fails as you cannot force it to send plain text. The iOS Mail app usually works if set to reply with plain text, but will output as rich text if the reply contains any recognized HTML links or graphics. On iOS you can also use the PlainText app to send to the PDML successfully. The cable is about 10' long. The intervalometer is large enough I won't lose it stuffing it in a camera bag. I've lost a couple of Pentax IR remotes that way. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of Suribachi’s slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman. Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which showed five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy flag pole, became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer Prize. The accompanying motion-picture footage attests to the fact that the picture was not posed. Of the other two photos, the second was similar to the first but less affecting, and the third was a group picture of 18 soldiers smiling and waving for the camera. Many of these men, including three of the six soldiers seen raising the flag in the famous Rosenthal photo, were killed before the conclusion of the Battle for Iwo Jima in late March. In early 1945, U.S. military command sought to gain control of the island of Iwo Jima in advance of the projected aerial campaign against the Japanese home islands. Iwo Jima, a tiny volcanic island located in the Pacific about 700 miles southeast of Japan, was to be a base for fighter aircraft and an emergency-landing site for bombers. On February 19, 1945, after three days of heavy naval and aerial bombardment, the first wave of U.S. Marines stormed onto Iwo Jima’s inhospitable shores. The Japanese garrison on the island numbered 22,000 heavily entrenched men. Their commander, General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, had been expecting an Allied invasion for months and used the time wisely to construct an intricate and deadly system of underground tunnels, fortifications, and artillery that withstood the initial Allied bombardment. By the evening of the first day, despite incessant mortar fire, 30,000 U.S. Marines commanded by General Holland Smith managed to establish a solid beachhead. During the next few days, the Marines advanced inch by inch under heavy fire from Japanese artillery and suffered suicidal charges from the Japanese infantry. Many of the Japanese defenders were never seen and remained underground manning artillery until they were blown apart by a grenade or rocket, or incinerated by a flame thrower. While Japanese kamikaze flyers slammed into the Allied naval fleet around Iwo Jima, the Marines on the island continued their bloody advance across the island, responding to Kuribayashi’s lethal defenses with remarkable endurance. On February 23, the crest of 550-foot Mount Suribachi was taken, and the next day the slopes of the extinct volcano were secured. By March 3, U.S. forces controlled all three airfields on the island, and on March 26 the last Japanese defenders on Iwo Jima were wiped out. Only 200 of the original 22,000 Japanese defenders were captured alive. More than 6,000 Americans died taking Iwo Jima, and some 17,000 were wounded.
