Thanks Igor. The Tamrac bag I have would be suitable for a professional
carrying everything for every contingency, but I wouldn't use it even going
somewhere by car. I am delighted with it nonetheless as a storage unit I can
find everything in at once.

The bag I need must be big enough for 2 DSLRs with lenses attached, a little
extra space for spare batteries and sundries, but not greatly bigger than it
needs to be. It needs to be comfortable to carry - my photography walks are
generally in the 5 to 8 mile range - and waterproof rather than shower
proof.

I'll take a good look at their website. I have a good understanding of why
photographers have so many bags, and yet none of them are just quite right.

Re: HTML testing

2016-05-09 Thread David Mann
I run a small mailing list through Google Groups which does allow attachments.

Every so often someone will send a photo then everyone who replies to it tends
to include another copy of the original attachment (I think this behaviour
varies depending on software / settings). The data can add up pretty quickly.

Cheers,
Dave

A small gallery here. I didn’t keep these full size as the vignetting at
question is visible, or not, even at reduced image size.

The first image is from the 24/2.0 [Yes Larry, NOT 1.4] to show the scene. Then
one or more shots from the DA 15mm, 35mm macro, 40mm, and 55mm and one from the
50-135/2.8.

I was wondering if it might be a Samyang.

http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p1033969621

Thanks a bunch. At first I thought that they were all vignetting down the left
side, then I realized that was a tree trunk.

Sorry about that. Not a good setup. After initial setup (with a longer lens) I
never looked through the viewfinder. Just swapped lenses, did a sequence of
shots, repeat for i = 1 to p where p=# of lenses.
But even with the dark tree trunk you can still get a sense of the vignette
effect (or not).

I'm bummed about the 50-135, that is a range I need in FF for photographing
tests at my dojo. I guess I'll just use the 28-75 in crop mode for now.

Which part of the 50-135 range are you actually using? And are you just
thinking about focal length? Or equivalent field of view? My guess would be
that on the K-1 the FOV you want would put you the long end of the 50-135 and
so it might work out alright…

On APS, I use the 28-75, and would appreciate both wider and longer, so
that would be 42-105 on FF. That is why I thought that 50-135 would be
a nice range on FF. Wider is more important than longer, because I can
crop.

So, a 24-70 on FF and one on APS and switching between the two might
work. :-)

Street Tea Vendor

2016-05-09 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thanks Bob for the nice suggestion of photographing the Tea Vendor
from the front closer to his level.

We asked his permission to photograph him. His pose was very natural
as he was busy with preparing tea for other folks too.
In fact I requested one or two customers to please move away, such was
the frequency of passer byes on the pavement.

I chose the side and slight back position to expose for the entire
wooden platform, tea and the ancient kerosene stove, which would
otherwise have been hidden by the tin sheet wind cheater for the
stove.

Yes I could have stooped down or squatted on the pavement for a lower
& better vantage point.

This shot was on the busy broad Shyam Bazaar Business District of
Kolkata - see the taxis and the busses.
Kolkata is such a nostalgic mixture of East meets West - a magical
place for Street Photography in India.

Regards.
Bipin.

My daily ride is this:

etta_della_s_55fc1b4eaf853.jpg

I am working on a website at present, so no doubt you'll see the real thing
in due course. I bought one when they first came out a few years ago, and
the rear carrier wasn't included (I added one) and it came with a better
groupset than it's currently sold with. The front rack usually carries my
small camera bag, and I can get quickly to it to stop and take pictures.

An expensive bag I would certainly put inside a saddle bag.

Great work getting into position to see and record these twisters, and

What *IS* going to be the kit lens for the K-1?

Why wouldn't it still be a 50mm f ? lens like in the days of 35mm film?

and battery grip. Good balance for handheld shooting. If I was doing
this in earnest, I’d use a monopod and shoot at ISO 400 or 800, but
not a problem without it. All these are at ISO 1600, which is nice and
clean with this camera.

You're doing a lousy job of convincing me that I should wait until the
price on a K-1 and kit lens package drops.

I certainly hope that they come out with a K-1A for sports, a K-1 with
an APS sized sensor, and pretty much nothing else changed. It could
have

the same number of focus points, but they would cover more of the
sensor. Frame rate would be higher with fewer MP to empty, it would be
less expensive with the smaller sensor, and it would have the same UI.

What *IS* going to be the kit lens for the K-1? Hadn't really even
thought about it because I already have a FA-50/1.4.

The 28-105, it seems to be selling for about $500. About a third the
cost of the 24-70. It also seems to be a fairly sharp lens judging from
some preview shots I've seen.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O==1225870=CjwKEAjw6sC5BRCogcaY_dKZ2nESJABsZihxyJIWMEiltBez3tptXCP9eW-o2q5YQoI6k6-d3ttyIhoCcybw_wcB==y=Y=1876%2C92051678882%2C=REG=details

It does have the advantage over the FA 50 of being weather sealed.

Yeah, the weather sealing is nice to have, but I got along for years &
years without it. So I expect I'll be able to cope.

Re: Mid-range teles?

2016-05-09 Thread Mark C

Hi Sandy -

The 55-300 is probably your best option, but if you want a decent lens
that is very inexpensive I have two recommendations.

First the Takumar F 70-200 f4-5.6 and FA 80-320.

This is a single single coated, non SMC lens. It does have flare
problems when shooting into bright light sources but the two samples
I've owned were both devilishly sharp. The first one I used with film
cameras, I bought another one a couple years ago for when I want
something lighter than a 70-200 f2.8. I paid $29 for the most recent
purchase - I'd would rate it at the top of the sharpness per buck ratio,
though that is a rather meaningless figure. Despite the potential flare
issues I put this n the bag and use it regularly. It is very sharp,
great colors, dirt cheap, small and light as a feather. I got a good
deal but you can find these for around $50 with a little patience and
looking.

Here's a link to the review page for this lens on Pentax Forums:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/Pentax-Takumar-F-70-200mm-F4-5.6-Zoom-Lens.html

Second option is the FA 80-320. Almost as sharp as the Takumar F in the
200mm and under range. It gets soft above 200mm but is not terrible. It
does have SMC coatings and doe shandle flare pretty well.. It does not
really reach to 320mm (IIRC it is measures as being something like 280).
Mine developed a horrible gearginding noise when focusing that made it
embarrassing to use, so I bought my second Takumar F as a replacement.
In the past few months the FA 80-320 got over the noise problem but I
prefer the Takumar and reach for it first, if I do not want to use the
heavier 70-200 f.8 (which I do use most of the time.) A quick look on
ebay shows the 80-320 with buy it now prices of about $80-$200. That is
pretty close to the L version of the DA 55-300, so it would probably be
wiser to go with that lens.

Here's the pentax fourms review page of the 80-320:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-FA-80-320mm-F4-5.6-Zoom-Lens.html

When my 80-320 got noisy I initially bought an FA 80-200 f4.7-5.6 for
~$25. I wanted a Takumar 70-200, but since I could not find one
immediately I got the 80-200 on the assumption that it was newer lens
with smc coatings, and so had to be at least as good if not better than
the lowly Takumar-F. Wrong! The one I got sucks - soft at every setting.
I would suggest avoiding this lens.

Hope this helps

Mark

I'd like a somewhat longer lens, preferably a prime in the 135-200
range but I'd take a zoom or a 300 if they turn up. I have almost no
budget for this, so I'll be looking at thrift stores & garage sales.
Lightweight and compact would be good.

Any advice on lenses to look for? Or to avoid?

I also have a Tokina 400 5.6 and Samyang 100-500, both K-mount &
manual focus, both bought as bargains, both working but neither
perfect. Neither gets significant use from me; I got them mostly for
my daughter who shoots some wildlife, but she prefers her lighter
autofocus zoom.

Anyone want to offer a trade for either or both?

question is visible, or not, even at reduced image size.

The first image is from the 24/2.0 [Yes Larry, NOT 1.4] to show the scene. Then
one or more shots from the DA 15mm, 35mm macro, 40mm, and 55mm and one from the
50-135/2.8.

Here's a test I'd like to see: Comparing the DA 40/2.8 with the old
M40/2.8 on the K-1. I'd bet that they perform almost identically and
what's really changed is our idea of what is an acceptable amount of
light fallof in the corners at wide apertures.

I might be able to arrange that, what with having both lenses. Hopefully
I d my old 40mm. I haven't seen it for several years.

critical focus on still subjects. Esp if you are half blind like me

No, but you do have focus peaking, which to my mind is just as good.

test of the lens. But I'll be playing with it.

K-1 and A 50/1.2

2016-05-09 Thread Paul Stenquist

Those who have been around for some time know that I often shoot the copper
goose in my garden to test lenses. Not very nice framing here, but I was more
concerned with making this a nice test. Shot this with the A 50/1.2 at f5.6,
ISO 200. The focus indicator works well on the K-1 when shooting with a manual
focus lens. Using a single focus point and pressing the shutter button halfway
it consistently give a flashing light and an aural sound right when the subject
is in focus.

Your wish is my command.
You will note in the larger image that there is a bit of a technical
flaw where I didn't quite get everything in focus.

So it goes.

I think it's a 12mb jpeg. I saved it at quality 11. Quality 12 gave a

Also, I lost a bit of size to processing the file, and I cropped a tiny

K-1 Vignetting? Some surprises...

2016-05-09 Thread Stanley Halpin
At least I was surprised. YMMV.

Brief evaluative comments here, I’ll post link(s) later to selected full-size
images so you can make your own evaluations.

Setting: I went to the riverbank behind our house. I was going to choose some
appropriately challenging target for vignette testing, but our local pair of
geese and their goslings were on the grassy shore below and I wanted to include
them in the shots. By the time I was set up, they were gone. But I left the
setup as was. When you look at the image files, remember to imagine a family of
geese grazing below.

Process. I put the camera on the tripod with the center spot on the near
shoreline and a clump of grass just off the edge. Didn’t move the camera after
that so all shots are the same, subject to differences among the lenses. A/V,
ISO 100.

I shot at f/4 and f/8 except sometimes with faster lenses I shot at f/1.4 (or
whatever) and f/4 and f/8.

DA 15mm: Forgeddaboutit.

DA 21mm: I forgot about it. I’ll check this one tomorrow.

DA 35/2.8 macro: Dark corners at /2.8, /4, and /8. However a center crop to
avoid the vignette would leave a much larger usable image than if you shoot in
Crop Mode.

DA 40/2.8: Slight darkening of the corners. If I “Enable Profile Correction”
inLightroom (leaving the Distortion and Vignetting parameters at default zero)
then the shadows are gone.

DA* 55/1.4: Slight darkening of the corners at f/1.4. If I “Enable Profile
Correction” inLightroom (leaving the Distortion and Vignetting parameters at
default zero) then the shadows are gone. No readily visible issue at f/4 or f/8.

DA* 50-135: Not good at the wide end, not bad at the long end.

DA* 50-135 with HD 1.4x tele extender: Not good at the wide end, not bad at the
long end.

I need to shoot some more with the 50-135 at various f/ stops and zoom levels
and the same with the 50-135 combined with the extender. I am not happy that it
wasn’t better in the 50-60 range; getting heavy vignetting there even at f/8

In sum, the 35/2.8, 40/2.8, and 55/1.4 all seem to have value when used with
the K-1, without too much compromise.

I also did a few shots on the same set up with a 24/1.4, 77/1.8, and 100 D FA
Macro /2.8 WR. No detailed evaluation yet, but no obvious nasty surprises.

Some quick shots with the venerable FA 28-105/4-5.6 left me scratching my head
and wondering why I didn’t sell this one for $25 when I had the chance a few
years ago. It can’t be that bad! Wide was ok but long end quite soft. Did I
screw up the focus? I need to re-check this one.

Later or tomorrow I will sort/label/export/upload some images so that you can
see for yourselves what I am talking about.

had fewer bars in the grill and a chrome strip down the centreline of

Re: K1 question

I had a question too. Does the K-1 let you zoom in on the display
when you have live view? This was there on the K-20, and then it
disappeared when I got my K-5. Great feature, as it let you do
critical focus on still subjects. Esp if you are half blind like me
trying to look through those tiny APS-c viewfinders.

My A7r does. I could persuade myself to buy a K1 if I could use it
with my little store of APS-C zoom lenses for the K5. I have enough
legacy glass for serious use, but I do like the zooms for functions

Yes, he was just ahead of me on the highway and I have a sneaking
suspicion that he called the Sheriff's office and had them close down
the highway for those behind him. Pretty smart way to get an exclusive

I'm with Bob here, which frightens me a little. I'm nearing twenty years
with my F-2 and it shows no sign of giving up yet.

The best camera bags for shooting are still the Domke F series. The F-2 in
particular was designed specifically for shooting with two bodies, and I've
used mine for twenty years for that.

http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke=700-02B

You can configure the innards different ways, eg one config for storage,
another for shooting. For shooting I divide the interior into two parts, one
per camera, and use the bag's pockets for accessories, although generally
that's only for transport - when I'm shooting I have my cameras on my
shoulders. On a strap, obviously; I can't attach tripod mounts to my shoulders.

Hmm. Maybe I've just had a business idea... It's crazy, but it might just work.

- this was many moons ago when a Pentax digital camera of
any sort was just speculation. Great bag, I store my film cameras in it etc,
but only useful otherwise day to day if you have some poor devil to cart it
around for you. I have a backpack which I got as a free gift with a DSLR
body that is too small, and another free bag which just takes a body and a
50mm lens attached.

Over the years from film, I've noticed that many bags have moved away from
being able to house two camera bodies. I assume that because you now have
variable ISO, manufactures don't feel you need to have two bodies, as you
might once have done using different film. The thing is, what I want is a
bag that is capable of housing two bodies with lenses attached and enough
room for spare batteries and all the sundries of the digital age. Many of
the places I take photos, especially in the Summer are dusty environments
(horse stables for a start), and frankly, I don't want to be changing lenses
on site. I normally have one body set up with the 16-85 & the other with a
55-300.

What I am fed up doing, is carrying a bag which doesn't suit, and a shopping
bag for the other camera. I don't really want a larger backpack, or a bag
which screams that it contains camera equipment inside. I'm not sure there
is anything out there that fits the job I want done.

Any ideas?

sending HTML to the list, stripping the formatting, or sending an

It is of course possible to migrate to a more HTML-friendly software,
but doing so would involve another learning curve I'm not sure I'm
willing to experience, since Mailman serves our purposes quite well and
has done since I took over, with the occasional hiccup.

Note that this is not list policy I'm talking about, but rather my
personal preference. I'm willing to take into consideration arguments

this in earnest, I’d use a monopod and shoot at ISO 400 or 800, but
not a problem without it.

It could have
the same number of focus points, but they would cover more of the

It also seems to be a fairly sharp lens judging from
some preview shots I've seen.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O==1225870=CjwKEAjw6sC5BRCogcaY_dKZ2nESJABsZihxyJIWMEiltBez3tptXCP9eW-o2q5YQoI6k6-d3ttyIhoCcybw_wcB==y=Y=1876%2C92051678882%2C=REG=details

It does have the advantage over the FA 50 of being weather sealed.

Yeah, the weather sealing is nice to have, but I got along for years &
years without it. So I expect I'll be able to cope.

Actually, I met "Pentax Ned" (Ned Bunnell, president of Pentax at the
time) at the K-X press introduction in New York City a was the invited
representative of the PDML. Good guy. Good photographer, too.

Re: Camera bags.

2016-05-09 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Malcolm,

I suspect you might be talking about a bag similar to my Tamrac bag that I
bought and use just for local, car-based trips where I need the
convenience of easy access to multiple cameras and/or lenses, and being
able to lay down a camera with the attached flash.

If I were buying a new bag for 2 DSLs, I would consider Vaguard bags.
I've written on this list that I am VERY happy with Vaguard Up Rise II -
33, which is a messenger bag, which made it to several countries on 4
continents.

What I like about Vanguard bags is thoughfulness of the design.
Besides other advantages, this bag feels big and spacious without being
overly bulky.
(The main shortcoming of that bag that I discovered is the awkward rain
cover.)

Vanguard has other lines designed for 2 DSLRs. I haven't seen those
personally -- only on the web site:

http://www.vanguardworld.us/photo_video_us/products/camera-bags.html?bag_configuration=1150

It seems to me that XCENIOR 41 and XCENIOR 36 might fit the description of
what you are looking for:

http://www.vanguardworld.us/photo_video_us/products/camera-bags/xcenior-41.html
http://www.vanguardworld.us/photo_video_us/products/camera-bags/xcenior-36.html
(I don't think they are THAT much looking as photo bags.)

I'm still on the search for a decent bag. The last time I bought a bag I
really liked, was a gigantic Tamrac from a list member on the south coast
of the UK (Brighton? Peter?) who I believe had a shop there and moved to
Japan (is that right?) - this was many moons ago when a Pentax digital
camera of any sort was just speculation. Great bag, I store my film
cameras in it etc, but only useful otherwise day to day if you have some
poor devil to cart it around for you. I have a backpack which I got as a
free gift with a DSLR body that is too small, and another free bag which
just takes a body and a 50mm lens attached.

Over the years from film, I've noticed that many bags have moved away from
being able to house two camera bodies.

Well, if they are, it's too late now.

By the person who went to their local car garage asking for a new "710 cap"?

Scary stuff, I don't think I'd want to meet a Pentax Ned down a dark alley.

Interesting, I also recently realized that we hadn't heard from him in a while.
