they seldom bother you. If, however, you unexpectedly come into close
proximity to a bear in the woods, or inadvertently approach a cub,
things can get very dicey indeed. I got rather close to a number of
them in Alaska, but I kept my distance and they were more interested
in the salmon than me, so there was never any real danger. The sight

You're capturing some wonderful moments, Paul.

"Some kids are born with it"

Yes, it's true. The gifted few have superior ball to eye co-ordination. If
identified at an early age & nurtured, they are on the path to stardom. This
applies especially to sports like baseball, cricket & tennis where the ball
is travelling at a high speed.

The first two years i was at GFM, 2005 and 2006, i had my tent very
close to PDML central, ie Cory's trailer. By the third year, 2007, i

Re: Peso - Storm Clouds on the Oak Savanna

2016-06-07 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Dan. Oak savannas are scrubby grasslands with sparse trees
intermingled, usually oaks. They usually are in areas with very poor /
sandy soil and may be maintained through controlled burns. The area
where I do most of my shooting is 80 square miles of state land,
officially dubbed a game area. It was farmland and when the farms failed
it was a CCC camp. Briefly housed a POW camp during WWII. Decades ago
the land was reforested but these days the savanna is being restored
through clearing, controlled burns and reintroduction of native grasses
and other plants. Its an interesting place - not wild because the hand
of man is all over it but certainly not tame.

This 8 year old has what ballplayers call swagger. He asks for time out
with the moves of a major league ballplayer, never mind that there is no
player-called time out in little league:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18244052=lg

Then he eyeballs the pitcher (who is an adult coach) and works his bat:

And when the pitch arrives, he looks it right into his bat and crushes it.

This attractive young lady was running wide receiver patterns at the park,
and a man was completing 30 and 40 yard passes to her. I didn’t take many
shots, because I was there to shoot little league baseball, but she was
good. She went up for the ball a couple times and must have been more than
two feet off the ground. Wearing receiver gloves too I see. Soft hands,
meaning she doesn’t bat the ball away but hangs onto it. Probably plays
for a women’s flag football team, although I’d like to think she’s trying
out for her high school’s tackle football team. Women playing full contact
football has become more common around here. K-1 with the DFA 15o/450 at
f5.6, ISO 3200, 1/2500, 450 mm off a monopod. Cropped to about 50% of
frame.

PESOs: Focus on the Photographer

2016-06-07 Thread Paul Stenquist
This young lady is supposed to be watching the ball, but she appears to be
smitten with the photographer:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18244070=lg

Her coach came around and straightened out her act:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18244072=lg

and she swung and missed. Closing her eyes probably didn’t help, but she
appeared to be having fun, and that’s what counts.

The K-1 and the DFA 150-450, both of which I am loving.

Those are Gibbs' rules. I had my knife.

When I arrived at the overlook, I had the camera on the car seat, but
didn't open the passenger door to get it out when the woman gestured to
me to come over.

She had her camera in her hand & wasn't taking photos, so I just walked
over to see what she wanted.

I'm not sorry about not getting a photo. That will come eventually. This
time I enjoyed the sight.

I saw a bear in the wild for the first time at GFM. It rained Saturday
night.

They've changed the program format slightly from previous years with the
evening presentations ending early enough you can get to the overlooks
to photograph sunset.

Saturday night, as soon as the presentation ended, I went down to the
overlook just below the entrance. When I got there, a woman made a
shushing sign (finger over lips) and then a "come over here" wave.

I went over to see what she wanted; she pointed down over the wall and
whispered "Do you see them?"

A few seconds later I did - two young black bears (or older cubs).
Didn't have time to go back over to the car to grab my camera, but I did
actually SEE wild bears at Grandfather mountain.

Nothing came sniffing around the campsite in the middle of the night,
but there were two hoot owls late Friday night. Couldn't see them, but I
could hear them calling - one over near the campground entrance and one
down the path in the direction of the guest cabin.

As far as wild animal photography goes, I managed to get a couple of
fuzzy shots of a chipmunk.

It was a fun weekend. I'll do it again as many times as I'm able to.

Stephen Fletcher is the Archivist at the UNC Wilson Library. His talk
was about digitizing the photography collections concentrating on
Western North Carolina photographers & especially the Hugh Morton
Collection.

http://blogs.lib.unc.edu/morton/index.php/2016/06/a-climb-to-the-bridge/

He also showed a few of his own photos & he's the one who said he bought
a K-1 just before coming to the GFM Nature Photography Weekend.

PS: My family visited Grandfather Mountain more than once while I was a
child, and seeing the photos in that blog entry, I remember those dirt
roads going up to the top.

Re: Two Questions - more or less

2016-06-07 Thread John

Decided to do the Windows 10 "upgrade" on my laptop first because it's
the one I can afford to do without (while troubleshooting) if anything
goes wrong.

So, right off the bat, I get an error ...

"Unfortunately, this PC is unable to run Windows 10"

"[Triangle-Exclamation Mark] Compatibility issue:"

"NVIDIA GeForce 7300"
"The display manufacturer hasn't made your display compatible with
Windows 10. Check with the manufacturer for support."

I checked. There's apparently a solution, but it looks like it's going
to be a long, involved, pain-in-the-ass workaround.

I hope it's not going to screw up any of the software I already have
installed.

On 6/7/2016 11:42 AM, Mark C wrote:

improvement in terms of how the user interface worked. The only
reservation I would have about 10 is that (AFAIK) you have no control
over updates - they will be downloaded an be applied whether you like it
or not. Over the years I've had a few situations where an update screwed
something up and had to be undone, but that is a very few number of
situations.

2. I have an IR converted K10D. It works works well be the metering is
based on visible light, not IR. As a result - metering can be
significantly off. So shooting involves taking a shot, checking the
histogram, making adjustments and re shooting. I'm not familiar with the
K20 but I think it supports live view. If it is metering directly off
the sensor the metering will be much more accurate - it will be based on
the IR spectrum that the modified sensor responds to vs viable light. I
would consider that a plus in favor on converting the K20 compared the
*ist D or K10D.

Not having the camera though ugh... That reminds me of NCIS rule #9:

PESO open daily

2016-06-07 Thread Larry Colen
I don't tend to do a lot of street photography. At the show on Sunday, I
noticed that my K-3 had not gotten GPS lock, and I wanted to use it to
sync the timestamps on my two cameras, so I stepped outside for a moment
to give it better signal.

I was grabbing a shot of the front of the restaurant when this young
woman walked in front of my camera.

It's NOT seeing a wild bear that is dangerous. If you see the bear
before it sees you, and you stay out of its way and awy from any cubs,
they seldom bother you.
The sight
-- or the smell -- can increase one's pulse rate a bit in any event.

Re: Two Questions - more or less

2016-06-07 Thread Mark C
1. I upgraded to Win 10 on my old machine and it ran fine. No issues and
not too different from Win 7 in terms of the user interface. Upgraded my
wife's laptop from Win 8.1 to 10 and would say that it was an
improvement in terms of how the user interface worked. The only
reservation I would have about 10 is that (AFAIK) you have no control
over updates - they will be downloaded an be applied whether you like it
