Re: Thoughts: pocketable compact with filmic ergonomics?

Bruce Walker wrote:

As a fellow Pentax user, what compact camera like this would you recommend?

Depending on your definition of pocketable, the K-r with a DA40/2.8 is
surprisingly trim and capable. By pocketable, it will easily fit in
cargo pockets or jacket pockets.

In that realm I recently bought an Olympus TG-4. On paper it looked very
nice, small, waterproof, capable of doing both stills and video, and
could produce raw files.

Unfortunately the video shut off after 21 minutes, rendering it useless
for the things I wanted video for, and despite the zoom being f/2 at the
wide end, it really rather sucked in even moderately low light. I
returned it within a week.

Lens will be either the F50/1.7 or the FA28/2.8, though the FA28-105 may be

Anyway. I've not gotten a digital flash before. What's a recommended unit
suitable for the K5 that will give quality results.

You're going to need a really big opener for that can of worms.

It's my experience that it's harder to learn to get good results from a
flash, than it is to learn to use a camera. Once again I'll suggest the
book "Light, Science and Magic". I'll also suggest that if you can, you
will want to get the flash off the camera and use radio triggers. The
yongnuo triggers are cheap and reliable. Unfortunately I have not had
nearly as good of luck with their speedlights. The YN560IV is an awesome
manual flash, for about a month, until it stops working.

I had horrible luck with my fgz540, but other people have had better
luck. I am curious about the fgz540-II. I've got a metz 58, and it's
serviceable.

If you don't need TTL, you may want to check out the lumopro

Yeah, the 28000 shot is extreme, especially since it is about a 50%
crop. Bit I'm okay with noisy pics as long as they're sharp. The
noise is no more pronounced than Tri-x grain at ISO 800. Printed and
viewed from a normal distance, this type shot is fine by me. But I

This appears to be a finch, and I shot it with the D FA 150-450 and
the A2X S converter. Like the other pic I posted it’s f8, 1/320th
and about ISO 28,00

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307583=lg

For this one I put on the DA 1.4 AF converter and slowed the
shutter speed down to 1/80th, I was able to get the ISO down to
about 1500. (The bird, a Junko, was also in better light.)

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307586=lg

The much slower shutter speed works fine if the bird down’t move,
but if he takes off I’ll lose what might be a good shot.

Tons of fun in the backyard.I shot the pics sitting in a lawn chair
with the camera on a tripod. I think sitting s a plus because it
minimizes my size.

There is no digital camera simpler and more akin to the film camera experience
than a Leica M-D (typ 262). The only settings it has other than ISO, focus,
shutter time, and aperture are for the clock. There's no LCD … and it feels
substantively smaller than any of the other digital Ms without it. It captures
only raw files so just like with film, everything past the capture is done in
processing and rendering the photo. The M-D gets out of the way instantly, it
returns you to a time before digital, before chimping, before user settings and
multi-mode this and that. Yet brings you all the advantages of a digital sensor
without the disadvantages.

I absolutely adore this camera.

My bag has in it the M-D, a 1972 Summilux 35 that's been coded so the camera
recognizes it, a Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4. Perfect setup for 99% of my shooting.
Sometimes I swap those two lenses out for a Color Skopar 28/3.5 and a Color
Skopar 50/2.5. These work well asides from color shading issues; I render only
to B with them. There's plenty more space in the bag … it's a Tenba DNA8 …
and it could easily fit the camera and all four of those lenses, plus an iPad
mini. One charge on the battery is good for 500-700 exposures; a 16G card is
good for around 800 exposures. Good match. And the default rendering of the DNG
files in Lightroom has that beautiful feel of a Leica film camera exposure.

If you want a digital camera that gives you as close to the film experience as
you can get, this is the one. Yes, it costs a bit; no, it won't fit in your
pocket. It's worth it.

No Cotty, you had the right end of the stick. But it's a forked stick. :)

I am looking for something pocketable, it's just that since I've been
finding that my needs for the elusive perfect camera aren't being met,
I'm expanding the search radius and considering alternatives.

Pocketable for me is actually bigger than your Levis back pocket
standard. A coat pocket, or a small fanny pack in the summer.

Yeah, the 28000 shot is extreme, especially since it is about a 50% crop.
Bit I'm okay with noisy pics as long as they're sharp. The noise is no
more pronounced than Tri-x grain at ISO 800. Printed and viewed from a
normal distance, this type shot is fine by me. But I think you're more
particular than I am. That could be a good thing. Someone has to maintain

This appears to be a finch, and I shot it with the D FA 150-450 and the
A2X S converter. Like the other pic I posted it’s f8, 1/320th and about
ISO 28,00

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307583=lg

For this one I put on the DA 1.4 AF converter and slowed the shutter
speed down to 1/80th, I was able to get the ISO down to about 1500. (The
bird, a Junko, was also in better light.)

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307586=lg

The much slower shutter speed works fine if the bird down’t move, but if
he takes off I’ll lose what might be a good shot.

Tons of fun in the backyard.I shot the pics sitting in a lawn chair with
the camera on a tripod. I think sitting s a plus because it minimizes my
size.

If you're considering Leicas then, I might have gotten the wrong end of
the stick.

I assumed you were looking for something genuinely pocketable. My
definition of pocketable is the rear pocket on a pair of Levis. YMMV.

I can squeeze the X20 (with it's easily understood and used UI - by me
at any rate) into my Levis at a push. I wouldn't sit down though.

It will easily fit in any jacket or coat pocket, lens retracted and
powered down.

I dare say a Leica will as well - but I defy you to get a Leica M Typ
26anything into a pair of Levis - with lens attached

Finally, a quick shout out for another camera that will easily satisfy
your requirements - although (like the Leica) will not fit in a pair of
Levis with a lens attached) - the Olympus Pen F.

Micro Four Thirds, so a large range of lenses available - including some
manual Voigtlander f/0.95 lenses (1 in your range) - as well as a number
of adapters for legacy lenses like Pentax.

My entire camera bag now consists of a Fuji X20 (zoom range equiv of
28-112), Olympus Pen F, Samyang 12/2 (24 equiv), Pentax 24/2.8 (48
equiv), Pentax 50/1.4 (100 equiv) and Tokina AT-X 90/2.5 macro (180 equiv).

That's all I've got. I have plans to replace some of the lenses with
Voigtlanders eventually, but I love the simplicity of this kit, and both
cameras tick the bill regarding old school feel. The Oly is an extremely
capable camera with large pixel count and 5 axis IS etc - so quite a
machine. Again, if `I have to take one in a pocket, it's the Fuji X20
every time.

My advice: buy an X20 for under 400 bucks as you mentioned. If you can't
get on with it, eBay it back into the system and put some wedge into a
Leica system. If you've got the funds, go for it.

I find the Leicas simply too big. And the X-Pro 1 and 2. Too big for
what I wanted. LOVE the X100T but restricted by lens for what I wanted to do.

That's why I got the Olympus.

Cheers!

Interesting.

My experience is slightly different. There are 2 user settings on the
main top dial (C1 and C2) and global camera settings can be concreted to
these to settings. Hence, my C1 setting is mono, high ISO, high
contrast, high everything for that gritty street look. C2 is mono, low
ISO, high quality for landscapes and suchlike. For colour I just turn to
either Program or Aperture priority

The menus are quite easy to understand and cycle through - but that said
I am used to the Fuji way - and now the Oly way as well, which isn't
hugely different. What I like to do is customise the external buttons
and dials as much as possible so I can quickly switch between settings
without having to scroll thru menus

I suspect the target market for the Fujis is largely made up of Leica wannabes
and Olympus Trip has-beens. Problem is, they don't fully deliver on their
promise. At least, not to me. The key thing about the Leicas is simplicity; not
getting in the way, as Godfrey puts it.

I think you'd find that size is not much of an issue with the Leica Ms once you
start to use them. I keep mine on a leather wrist strap, and I normally have a
small shoulder bag for one or two extra lenses, a light meter and other
paraphernalia. You could easily keep it all in a combat jacket if that happens
to be your thing. You could also buy an old (or indeed new) collapsible Elmar
lens to make it even smaller when not in use.

I find that I carry no more with the M than I would with one of the Fujis,
since I keep them on a wrist strap too, and still need a small bag to keep my
wallet, phone and glasses, and light meter if I take one. It's principally the
glasses case that causes this, as my phone goes in my wallet anyway, and that
could go in a pocket.

Re: It's time for a digital flash

2016-11-07 Thread P.J. Alling
You can use pretty much any modern auto-thyristor flash, if you set the
aperture properly you'll get images pretty much as well exposed as you
would with a fancy P-TTL capable flash. The command interface on a late
model AF280T is even partially supported so in the auto modes it will
set the proper f stop and shutter speed.

Re: Thoughts: pocketable compact with filmic ergonomics?

2016-11-07 Thread Boris Liberman
Bruce, a friend of mine has one. I handled it briefly few times. It is
of course on the smallish size, but it has general gestalt of
rangefinder camera, as I see it. Here I have to admit that I only shot
one roll of film with Russian Leica clone, so I don't have that much
of a expertise as to how the rangefinder camera gotta handle. Yet, it
is a nice little camera with big sensor (relative to its size and
weight) and it is worth considering.

Pocket-wise, it's about the same size as my K-3, a little thinner I

Re: Advice on large format photography

> I should be grateful indeed if you could share your experiences and
>give me some advice on this.
>Or, in other words, would you like to push me or stop me?
>
>Bulent

I would recommend against a 5x7 camera for practical reasons.
1) if you're shooting 4x5, the camera is a lot bigger
2) if you're able to find 5x7 film ... good for you. It's hard to find.
You'll end up with a bulky 4x5.

That said ...
4x5 results are awesome.
8x10 is, too.

But ... up to 16x20 it's tough to see the different between a quality medium
format shot (like a Blad, Mamiya RZ, or Fuji) and a 4x5.
So if you're printing 11x14 and you're not needing to do any lens movements
a medium format might be a better bet.
If you're shooting landscapes or table-top stills where you want some rise
or tilt, then consider a 4x5 body with a roll back.
But then you'll have to spend a good amount on quality lenses lest your
shots look a bit low in contrast or detail. (IOW, avoid the old 50s & 60s
vintage Schneiders.)

Of course a medium format with everything might be the Fuji GX680 series.
Quality glass and solid hardware. Plus all the movements you'll probably
need. And it's a lot easier to process file medium format negs.

My thoughts are then:
First) 4x5. You'll be able to do medium format as well as sheet film. Not
very heavy but holders can be bulky.
Second) Medium format will let you do everything a 4x5 will. More weight on
the hardware side, less work in the darkroom.
Third) 8x10. Make your time worthwhile and just print contacts. You'll not
be disappointed. But you'll spend a bunch per shot so make 'em count.

It's time for a digital flash

2016-11-07 Thread Collin B
I need to re-shoot some of my new daughter-in-law/her mother pre-wedding
shots.
The originals, not by me, were done with her mother's hair still in curlers.
My assigned task is to reshoot them.
But I really do want something better than the pop-up flash on the K5.
Lens will be either the F50/1.7 or the FA28/2.8, though the FA28-105 may be
used as it's respectable.
Anyway. I've not gotten a digital flash before. What's a recommended unit
suitable for the K5 that will give quality results.

I am back home from the last week's conference travel, - and by this
time, people may have figured out that this picture has been taken at
"GUM" - "Upper Trading Rows", and iconic store in Moscow, Russia:

http://pug.komkon.org/16nov/slides/IR-%20IconicPlaces-Igor_IR34361.html

I am not sure if anybody read the Wikipedia linked below that image:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUM_%28department_store%29
It is a historic building with the first of its kind (at the time it
was built - more than a century ago) engineering design.

Yet another structure built by the same engineer is the hyperboloid
"Shukhov tower": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shukhov_Tower

(on the UNESCO's "Endangered Buildings" list).
Unfortunately, I don't have any of my own photos of it.

A few interesting engineering facts about it:
Shukhov invented hyperboloid towers (Patent of 1899, applied 1896).
The original design called for 350 meters height, and that would weigh
2200 tons (metric). For comparison, Eiffel Tower (324 meters) weighs
over 10 000 tons. Due to the shortage of steel, Shukhov's tower is
only 160-meters tall.
Based on this idea, in 2005-2009, a 600-meter-high hyperboloid Canton
tower was built in Guangzhou, China. (For a brief moment it was the
tallest tower in the world, taking over that title from the CN Tower
in Toronto.)

A curious fact:
In 1941, a postal airplane that was expriencing technical problems,
touched with its wing the cable that was going from the top of the
tower to the ground (at an angle), - a leftover from the construction,
which was hanging there for several years since the tower was built.
That torn off the winch that was at the ground end, but the tower
remained intact and did not need any repairs. The plane crashed into
the nearby house's yard.

Re: PESO - "2x2 = 4to" (plus some curious engineering facts)

2016-11-07 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you, Larry, Malcolm, P.J., Marco, John, and
John-wherever-you-are-now for looking and commenting! ;-)

I am back home from the last week's conference travel, - and by this time,
people may have figured out that this picture has been taken at "GUM" -
"Upper Trading Rows", and iconic store in Moscow, Russia:

http://pug.komkon.org/16nov/slides/IR-%20IconicPlaces-Igor_IR34361.html

I am not sure if anybody read the Wikipedia linked below that image:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUM_%28department_store%29
It is a historic building with the first of its kind (at the time it was
built - more than a century ago) engineering design.

Due to the shortage of steel, Shukhov's tower is only
160-meters tall.
Based on this idea, in 2005-2009, a 600-meter-high hyperboloid Canton
tower was built in Guangzhou, China. (For a brief moment it was the
tallest tower in the world, taking over that title from the CN Tower in
Toronto.)

A curious fact:
In 1941, a postal airplane that was expriencing technical problems,
touched with its wing the cable that was going from the top of the tower
to the ground (at an angle), - a leftover from the construction, which was
hanging there for several years since the tower was built. That torn off
the winch that was at the ground end, but the tower remained intact and
did not need any repairs. The plane crashed into the nearby house's yard.

Re: 2017 PUG Themes - The Final Cut

Thanks, Brian. Pretty clear titles.

G'day all

Thanks for the feedback. Here are the themes for 2017:

January; Doors
February; This Sporting Life
March; Geometric Shapes in Nature
April; 20th Anniversary Gallery
May; Leading Lines
June; Mountains
July; Leaves
August; City Transportation
September; Abandoned
October; Nakedness
November; Less is More
December; National Parks

I've considered all the suggestions and, if they don't appear here,
don't take it personally :-) They have either been filed away for next
year or omitted because I'm concerned that may not achieve a good level
of participation. I've expanded Bruce's 'Nude' suggestion into
'Nakedness', which can be broadly interpreted to include concepts other
than human nudity (eg. artwork featuring nudity, denuded landscapes -
perhaps even baldness :-)>.

I like Igor's idea of reaching out to former PDMLers to contribute to
the 20th Anniversary Gallery - something to keep in mind as April
approaches.
