Re: Bicycle stuff
You are correct about the limits, but it is wear not stretch. Actually they say it is better to replace when it gets over 1/16 then you don't have to replace the sprocket cluster. When you get out to 1/8 then both have to be changed. It isn't a hard job, especially with the cassette clusters. Cleaning and lubricating the chain frequently will delay the wear. I have over 6000 miles on my SunTour and it is still less than 1/16 Cy Galley - www.qcbc.org Webmaster TC - Chair, Emergency Aircraft Repair, Oshkosh - Original Message - From: Steve and Sue Bullock [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2001 1:34 PM Subject: RE: Bicycle stuff Probably the chain. There are no testing - just a short presentation and summary. No winner:)) They are all considered to be equally good. But there is a note in this article, that made me wonder... Am I missing something? Let me cite it: "The ZX-7 offers Snap-in Focus: Using a non-autofocus lens, set the focus-mode switch to AF, focus manually at a desired distance, and fully depress the shutter button (use the optional Cable Switch F to lock it down). When a subject arrives at the prefocused distance, the camera will automatically fire." What the hell? There's nothing of this kind in my MZ-7. With my SMC M 50/2 mounted on I have focussing assist in both AF and MF mode and when I fully depress the shutter button, the camera fires without any further delay. Is there any difference between ZX-7 and MZ-7 (there shouldn't be any, I guess...)? How can I get this feature in my MZ-7 (I'd really love to have it...)? Anybody has comments on this? Well, I wanted to take the shot in complete darkness and therefore the use of flash never comes in picture. I took the shot and the result came out to be overexposed but it was more or less acceptable. The lens used was Pentax SMC A 35 - 80 mm f/4-5.6. My next experiment was to decrease the aperture by 5 stops, i.e., f/22 and therefore the exposure has to be increased by 5 stops, i.e., 64 sec. I got a very horrible result. It was severely underexposed. HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN? I couldn't find any explaination for it. Is the lightmeter working o.k.? I doubt! Any explaination/suggestion/comment is welcomed. Re: PUG Commentaries the Pub Atmosphere
I have watched the furror over the critiques. Not being honest and just saying nice things is counter productive. The shooter will keep using the same poor technique unless someone is honest and tells them that there is a better way. It is sort of like telling a math student that 2 times 3 is 7 is ok just so you don't hurt the student's feelings. I realize that there is a knack in telling someone that their picture is poor without offending them but I also realize that unless they are told that next month's picture will be no better. If you post and want to grow your photo skills, then making suggestions to improve is the only way that you or I will lift outselves out of the amatuer catagory. Obviously, some of our critiquers need some experience in making comments BUT our critiques of the critiquers need to be polite and positive comments for them to improve. Wild! I too have couple of CG Conns. One is a single French Horn That I bought used in 1950 and an Altimeter that they made during the second World War in 1944 for the Army Air Force. Maybe it's because I'm an historian. Maybe it's because older products were often better built than their contemporary equivalents. For sure it's because so many old things, say, cameras, typewriters, and cameras are aethetically more pleasing. The French horns that I play most often are a 1952 Conn 28D and a 1955 Conn 8D. Both magnificent instruments, far superior in craftsmanship and playing qualities to modern Conns. Or modern anything else, except exclusive handmade instruments. I still sometimes use a '20s Smith manual typewriter or an '80s IBM Selectric. Both heavy metal of the best sort. Both perfectly functional. Both a lot more satisfying than the computer I spend most of my time with. To bring this back to the topic at hand, the cameras that I use most often are a K1000 I picked up on the eve of my first research trip to South Africa in 1989 and a bruised and battered, but absolutely reliable KX. Most of my lenses are Pentax As and Ms, than which there may be some as good, but none better in 35mm. I also often use a Contax IIIa rangefinder with Zeiss 50/1.5 lens that my father bought new in 1959 and an early '50s Rolleicord TLR (sibling to the Rolleiflex) with a stunning Zeiss 75/4.5 lens. And the crowning glory of my collection, an Argus C3, da Brick. Each of these cameras is solid, metal, well-crafted, low maintenence, and a joy to hold and use. (I hear that mumbling about the Argus. Cut it out!) Next to them my ZX-5N feels like a toy. Not that I'd want to give up the 5N. TTL flash is a godsend. I also appreciate being able to set it on auto-everything for snaps. As for film, I shoot more Tri-X (35 and 120) than anything else and have since high school. Having been on a nostalgia kick of late, I was disappointed to learn that it's not really the same emulsion that it was in 1972. Tonality is still gorgeous. On the other hand, my second most used film is Ilford's decidedly modern Delta 3200 and lately I've been using Kodak's T-Max developer for everything including (gasp) Tri-X. Re: Off Topic, but....What is the lowdown on Printers and Scanners?
Maybe the high resolution that these printers use isn't necessary. He prints his out at 300 dpi but he is using a 4 pass $12,000 Kodak Printer on their special paper. They look great on 8 x 12 prints. He is using a nice flat bed scanner but I have taken files from my computer as 300 dpi, messed with PhotoShop and they were very nice. Remember though, Black and White takes more dpi to convey the same picture as color. I use an Epson 1200 to print color enlargements from transparency and negative scans. I'm very happy with the printer and have made over 100 large prints. (The most similar current model would be the 1280.) The only downside is that the ink can get quite expensive. I would guess that I'm getting between twelve and fifteen 11x16 prints from each color ink cartridge. The cartridges sell for around $30. I've been using the Archival Matte A3 size paper that Epson sells for the 2400. This yields very nice results on the 1200, although it is not intended for use with that printer. (I don't know why, since it works very well.) It's relatively inexpensive, less than a dollar a sheet. I also like the results I get with Epson's Premium Glossy Photo Paper in the same size, although it is more expensive. I love the look of 18 x13 prints made on Epson's Glossy Film in Super A3 size. However at around $6 a sheet I don't make very many of these. This also brings me to another point, which, sorry is, you guessed it ... OFF TOPIC! hehe, but does anyone know if it is possible to process Kodak TCN400 as you would a standard black and white film? If so, would I be able to do this with the same chemicals etc as I would a "real" black and white film, and thus do it at home myself? Also, one other point; I am expecting many of you to refer me to the respective web sites of Canon, Epson etc. to check the specs of all of the printers/scanners that I have listed. I have already done this, and researched each model quite thoroughly. (I even printed them all out and have collated a "book" of possible models! Aren't I industrious?) So, what I really would appreciate from you guys is personal reviews of the equipment, and your preferences/opinions as to which would be the best way to go. I can get the specs anywhere but obviously the websites are not going to list the faults/disadvantages of one model over another, I am hoping that you all can assist me with this I have also been to both the sites of www.photoreview.com and www.imaging-resource.com to look at user reviews, but unfortunately neither of them really had the models that I am interested in. Re: Aperture Question...
Maybe a compromise is better in this case. As you stop down, you do get better depth of field but sharpness beyond the f8 stop doesn't really improve that much. So if hand holding, it is probably better to use a faster speed to minimize shake and motion from the wind. If you use a tripod, the wind is still a consideration. Hey everyone, just a quick question before hubby kicks me off the computer... This may seem like a totally dumb question, but please remember that everything I know about photography I have taught myself, so you can expect that I will have missed a few things here and there. At a BBQ on Friday night (don't say it, I know BBQ = meat = very naughty for Good Friday, but I'm a vego anyways, so there...my kids ate sausages though. hehe)... Anyways, at a BBQ on Friday night, a woman and I were talking about photography and she claimed that she had this friend who was an "expert" on landscape photography, which I basically know ZILCH about. She claimed that his number one tip was to shoot EVERYTHING in landscape photography at f22 to ensure maximum depth of field. Ok, so here is my question, (and please forgive me if I am wway off track here), but when you are shooting, say a lake, or a beach scene at 6.30 at night and you need more light, doesn't it make sense to shoot as wide open as possible? The lady I spoke to argued the point of depth of field with me, but unless I am rally mistaken, I thought that the theory behind a lens which focuses at "infinity" meant that after your subject is a certain distance away from the lens (eg. 8 metres on my Vivitar 28/2) the focusing switches to infinity which basically means that everything is in focus anyways? I mean, if that is not the case, than what is the use of having a "fast lens" when only a miniscule amount of your shot will be in focus? I am sure that I sound really backward and totally clueless to even very basic photography rules on this, but if her friend is truly an "expert" then wouldn't he be correct in his f22 theory? And if he is, can somebody please elaborate on this for me, cause I have definitely lost the plot somewhere Oh, btw, Merry Easter!! Re: screwmount adapters: how to keep them on?
I hate to say that your blanket statement that "Loc-tite is extremely corrosive (that's why it works)." is WRONG but it is! First "Loctite" is a brand name for many, many products. They run from thread lockers to lubricants. There are epoxies, gasket materials, anti-seize, rust proofers, and even hand cleaners. If you are referring to thread lockers; then retention is done by setting up by the exclusion of oxygen. You can precoat and then assemble years later and it still works. One statement from the factory manual says that it eliminates galvanic corrosion in aluminum and magnesium. These thread lockers meet strict Mil-specs (MIL-S-46163A) so they can be used in miltary and aviation applications. They are FAA approved for aviation use. They come is various strengths, and as they get stronger, they are removable by the simple application of heat. But the low strengths are easily removable with normal hand tools in the same order of lock washers without the limited torque range. The adapter is supposed to stay in the camera body. There's a spring clip that keeps it there. You can use a screwdriver, fingernail, knife, or other similar object to release the clip and remove the adapter. You can mount an adapter on each lens and remove the locking clip from the adapters. I would just screw the adapter on snugly. It should stay put. Loc-tite is extremely corrosive (that's why it works). I wouldn't want to get it anywhere near a camera or lens. (You can also buy yourself a Spotmatic F and throw away the adapters.) When I set about to remove the lens, the adapter stays in the Super Program body; the lens unscrews from the adapter. It's VERY annoying to have to extract the adapter, with whatever tools I have available, so that I can fit the body with another lens. (That is the idea of interchangeable lenses, isn't it?) Last night I used a screwdriver, but I realize this is a no-no. I had hoped that by using genuine Pentax-brand adapters I wouldn't face this problem, a problem that I first experienced last year when using a Samigon-brand adapter to fit an 85/1.8 screwmount lens to my Super Program. The Samigon actually came with a little tool to extract the adapter. If I'm going to have this problem each time he removes the lens, I might as well dedicate a body to it. If I decided to do that, I could have bought these lenses in their multicoated versions in Minolta mount, or Canon, or Olympus. The screwmount units--certainly the 200/3--appear to be single-coated. I'm tempted to use Loc-Tite to more or less permanently keep each adapter on the lens. Comments? Suggestions? Paul Franklin Stregevsky - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Film rewind with memory (WAS: Photo Expo Japan 2001 - MZ-S and FA31Ltd)
Why not have the camera notch the film edge when exposed? or burn a spot in the sprocket hole area? Then when inserted, the film would wind past the last mark and stop ready to take the next picture. For double exposures, it could be backed up or just not advanced. That some chip programming but it should be very easy to do. All you have to do is write down in the roll what memory goes with that roll. Example Memory #1: 23 frames shot Memory #2: 8 frames shot .. Memory #n: 15 frames shot When you change the roll you dial the number of the corresponding memory, and voila, the camera winds to that frame plus 1. What do you think? You should be able to open IE then go to File, Open, find the JPG you want to view and see it. When opening a computer magazine CD the jpgs won't show. I sat on the only bid of $14 on an item for 5 days. I had a max of $20 on the auto bidder. At the last minute a bid of $20.01 from a zero rated user won the auction. The next day the seller contacted me saying the auction winner had no intention of buying the item so was offering it to me at $20 which of course was now visible in the bid history. Although I thought it a reasonable price I declined. I smelled a rat. Although I didn't accuse him, I suspected the seller of having a second account and bidding on his own item in order to drive out my max. Without the "bad" bid he would never have seen my max bid. I dont see a way of either proving or stopping this. The bad bidder would of course never get negatives because he would never complain against himself. It is manual but is very sharp. - Original Message - From: "Clive Williams" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Pentax Discuss" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2001 4:31 PM Subject: Pentax wish list I'd ask for a 'neo-M series' of prime lenses. The Limiteds are nice but expensive; the likes of the FA*24/2 are bulky and expensive, and not everyone needs such wide apertures. Some of these already exist, but how about a series that went something like: 20mm f/4 24mm f/2.8 28mm f/2.8 35mm f/2.8 50mm f/1.7 85mm f/2.8 200mm f/4? It might enable Pentax to reinvent itself as the true home of the knowledgeable amateur, whose pockets do not bulge with cash but who wants good, simple lenses that don't need a trolley to carry them about. The FA 35/2 could be the model for these, as an AF lens that focuses nicely on a MF camera. I'm no marketing professional, which is perhaps why my employer is still in business, but I see no future for Pentax in the I-Want-What-the-Pros-Use market. (I know that issue's been well covered already.) No problem - a Canon or a Nikon has more buttons on it and is bigger and more imposing, so that's what they buy. Others choose a Canon or a Nikon because they like what those cameras and/or lenses can do, so fair enough. You don't have to watch this list for long to realize that Pentax owners keep the faith because of the lenses, but how many of us scour magazine ads and Ebay listings for M- and A-series lenses because we can't get new equivalents? I know I do: I bought an FA 35/2 and an FA 100/3.5 new because they were both available and affordable. My other lenses are secondhand buys, and while it's to Pentax's credit that it made so many fine lenses that have lasted so well, I think there's pent-up (sorry!) demand here for new equivalents to those compact, affordable classics. I'd pay $250 for a new FA 24/2.8 tomorrow, given the chance. Of course, if there was a neo-LX (presumably LXXXI now) to go with the lenses, so much the better. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. However, I digress, and as such I must now revert back to the tragedy of today. Actually, multiple tragedies really, so here goes So we went to M'Donalds - just me and my two toddlers. Had a nice lunch and decided to go up to our local tourist lookout for a walk. Being a nice day, naturally, I chose to take with me my trusty third baby (my other two are human), my PZ-1P. Warning, the following may be distressing for some readers, and especially the author We got to the top and it was almost sunset, so I thought, hey, why don't I set up my tripod and take some selfportraits of myself and my boys with the sunset behind us. Hmmm, so far so good. Tripod set up, cable release set up, smile, snap! smile, snap! a couple of nice pics for sure. Of course after two photos, my almost three year old (my oldest), decided to make a bolt for it categorically stating that he wanted to "play in park, no more pottos mum". With that, he bolted down the path of the lookout. Me being a normal, concerned mum, tried to grab him for fear of him falling over the 50ft cliff on the other side of the walkway, whilst trying to hold my other baby (aged 16 months) and untangle myself from my cable release at the same time. I am almost too upset to even type this, but, alas, I shall continue, if not to console myself, then to at least make somebody out there feel some morsel of pity for me! The following moments were like one of those slow motion scenes out of a movie where all the sound gets blurred and somebody yells out "nooo" whilst trying fruitlessly to prevent a tragedy from happening. Well, today, I was that somebody and my tragedy did happen. Lets just say that my Pz-1p, complete with sigma 28-80 macro zoom, pentax cable release, achiever 630af flash and (crappy) vanguard tripod, all went a tumbling straight over the cliff face. About 10 seconds and 50ft later, I opened up my eyes (after all of the crashing and smashing sounds had stopped) to find debris scattered down the cliff face at a huge variety of intervals. I am so devastated, that camera was indeed my baby. I can't buy anything else this year (except maybe something pretty cheap and nasty), as we are building a house and I start Uni next year which will be expensive, so now, I am stuck with nothing but an MZ-50. (Despite my previous claims that I have a Pt-30, I was actually exagerrating a little in the assumption that I would win an auction that I was bidding for it on. In a wonderful climax to my day, I arrived home to find that I had been outbidded, and the auction had ended while I was trying to climb down the cliff and rescue my little black pieces of metal and glass that were once a very expensive camera.)! I am in a severe state of shock and mourning, I sure hope some of you guys have some miraculous words of comfortBTW, I had only had the PZ-1p since Christmas, after I saved for two months to buy the thing! Re: zx-5n date back question
Yes, and you can remove the battery as well. To turn off it is just a touch of a button. Some models the battery comes out without opening the back, others like MZ-50, takes a screw driver after opening the back. Since I have an PZ-70, the battery removes thru an opening in the back but I don't know about a ZX-5n but the backs are removable without tools and can be exchanged for a non-data back...if you can find one. - Original Message - From: "Mark Howard" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 5:29 PM Subject: zx-5n date back question Can the date imprinting feature be turned off (so that it works like on non-date back)? Re: OT: Americans rewriting history
I find the comment about Henry Ford off base and insulting to the memory of a good man to say the least. Henry was a pacifist and tried to keep us out of WW ONE. Ford made more Willys Jeeps than Willy's did in WW TWO for just one example. The Willow Run plant was built and produced more bombers than almost any other plant. It too was a FORD effort. Ford put auto know how into building planes on an assembly line and built these large bombers faster than they were building little fighters. Re: re:A lens that only fits on plastic lens mount
Many plastics are so tough that a bullet will bounce off without a trace. No scratch, No Dent. Try that with metal! I reply: Agreed. Looks better, too, in most "classic" applications. But when do you know if it is worn out? Another scenario: You drop your camera and lens. Both mounts are metal and both are damaged because they are of approximately equal strength, which is exceeded by the accident. But if one was designed to fail under such extreme conditions, and that part was extremely cheap to replace, is that a "better" part? Should the "fail" part be on the lens? mike Another plus for metal: With enough shock, plastic will shatter. You can't much repair that. My friend accidentaly dropped an old Exakta lens (about 1 kg heavy) onto hard stone floor, from his standing height. It landed on the mount. One of the bayonet blades got twisted a bit - couldn't be mounted in the Exakta. A mechanist was able to either twist it back or file it away, and now it mounts into his Exakta as when new. If made with plastic mount, it would be repairable ONLY AS LONG AS THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. Re: A lens that only fits on plastic lens mount
When I see these messages about plastic mounts being inferior I laugh. I have a friend that owns and runs large camera repair place. He replaces many more metal mounts than plastic as the plastic is more forgiving. It yields and then returns to a serviceable state rather than deform which destroys the metal mount. Keeping in mind cost and the fact that I can upgrade later, what should I be thinking about in terms of RAM and hard drive capacity? Will 933MHz processing speed be enough? Do I really need a .25 pitch, flat screen, 17 inch monitor? Seriously, for anything involving Photoshop, even the LE version, the faster the CPU and the more the RAM you have, the better it is. If you store your images on Zips, then HD capacity can be reduced, saving money. A medium-fast CPU but bags of RAM will be better than a fast CPU but only a bit of RAM. For Photoshop, you can *never* have enough RAM. 64MB, yes, it will run - but as soon as you start chucking out hi-res images for printing, it'll slow to a crawl. 128MB better, 256MB even betterer. In other works, what are the minimal requirements to do flatbed scanning and light-duty image manipulation? Okay for that, and bearing in mind you're on a budget, look at a Pentium 266, 64MB RAM and at least a 2 GB drive. With a Mac, G3 is best, similar hardware requirements. Re: Tripods, cable extensions...?
It is NOT a cable release but a wire with switches. I have one that I got off of E-bay... Took a while ti get it for less than $25 including shipping. Many go for $35 plus shipping as they are bid up. Presently there is one.. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1208455990 and presently at $33.99 Another for 12.51 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1209094409 Search for pentax cable switch F or just pentax cable will bring up all the cables. Death and taxes are inevitable; at least death doesn't get worse every year. - Original Message - From: "dosk" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2001 2:48 PM Subject: Tripods, cable extensions...? Hi My ideal tripod would be one that has a 63" extended height, has snap-lock legs, is rock steady, and weighs around 3 lbs or less Any brand that anyone knows of, or has, that fits this description? Thanks, Skip PS. Pentax cable release for a ZX-M, from B+H, costs $35.00! For a cable release??? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: PocketJet printer... what's up with that?
The Pentax PocketJetTM printer, with its ultra-light/ultra-portable design, sets new standards for truly portable printing. Weighing only 17.5 ounces/497 grams (including battery), the PocketJet printer can go with you anytime and anywhere you need it! Best of all, the PocketJet printer is loaded with the performance features you would expect to find in a desktop printer, in a compact, portable package.. PocketJets are among the smallest portable printers in the world. Even with accessories, they are still small enough to fit into the available space in your briefcase or PC carry bag. PocketJet ships with everything you need to start printing right out of the box. If you were to add up the items that are not included with most other portable printers, yet are standard with the PocketJet, you would find PocketJet often has a lower suggested list price. (And most of these items are considered essentials by true road warriors.) A complete PocketJet system includes: PocketJet printer Rechargeable Ni-Cd battery AC adapter/battery recharger AC Power cord Parallel cable Thermal paper - 100-sheet box Carrying case Complete documentation Brand new, factory sealed. It is a thermal paper printer. Like thermal fax machines. Poor quality. Cy Galley - editor, B-C Contact! I see this printer come up all the time on eBay, and I'm curious about it. Is it inkjet, dye sub, or something else? Can you still get paper for it? It looks pretty neat, but the consistent lack of bidders must mean something. chris - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Buy a throw-a-way! - Original Message - From: "jeepgirl" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 19, 2001 1:06 AM Subject: uh oh I promised my cousin that if she went to grandfather mountain with me i would loan her a camera, since I have 3 bodies i figured no biggy. So. I just shot a roll of film through my pz-70. (haven't touched it much since last Oct when i got my pz1p, ). When I got to the end of the roll, it rewound, i thought. I opened it up, and it hadn't rewound all the way. So I took it to the camera shop after class today, and we tried the usual, new battery, different roll of film, different lens even (don't know why on that one, but the shop guy said to try it.) And it still wouldn't rewind all the way. Anyway to make a sad long story shorter, I sent it off for repairs, They told me that the wait was at least 6 weeks probably more like 10. This may be premature, but i am worried what if my little camera doesn't come back on time, I sure don't want to loan Jesse my pz-1p I want to play with her, but can the girl shoot my me? It isn't autofocus. What oh what am i gonna do? som - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: AF 1.7x Teleconverter?
No rib at all, There is an AF lens in the converter that will focus if there is enough light from the primary lens. In low light or a slow lens, it doesn't focus just like your regular AF lens when you are trying to use you flash.
