Re: A20 2.8

2007-10-31 Thread Francis Alviar
Thanks all for the tips. I'll try to locate a local
repairman before attempting to disassemble the lens or
send it out. So far it works but as an "M" lens since
there is no contact but the aperture ring can shift to
the "A" setting. It's just that the contact is not
there.

OT: Please identify this bird

2006-08-06 Thread Francis Alviar
This bird showed up out of nowhere while my daughter
was feeding the ducks at a local park.

The ducks were avoiding it like the plague. Probably
due to the huge beak and menacing eyes.

Anyway just want to know what the name of this bird
is. Apologies for the cropped pic on #2. Had to rush
to take the photos while he still had the fish in his
beak.

Oh and also these are the first shots from my recently
acquired DA 16-45mm lens. The photos are labeled in
the gallery for anybody who cares to see.

Thanks.

When I bought mine it was to use on film cameras but I
never did because right after that I purchased an *ist
DS. It's light, has good bokeh and like others said
images come out sharp. On a digital camera you lose
the wide end so not really good for scenic shots but
good enough for a walkabout lens. But now that I have
the 16-45mm coming I don't know if I will use this as

So I hear that a lot of people like this lens, other
than its tendency
to split apart.

I've never been one for zooms, and so I never
considered buying it.
However, I've come across one. Someone convince me to
keep it, or not
keep it. I'm unlikely to ever use it on film (because
it won't fit on my
67). I have an SMC-M 28mm f2.8, a Super Takumar 35mm
f2.0 and an SMC-F
50mm f1.4 in the range this fellow covers.

Tell me why I'd want to keep it.

True story: A few years ago I bought a Pentax
FA*80-200/2.8 from KEH.
It
was listed as being in Bargain condition. When I
received it I found,
as
I expected, that the condition was much better than
one would normally
expect from "bargain" condition. One small
disappointment was finding a
slightly dented filter ring. Not a big deal - I've
purchased Bargain
condition lenses from KEH in the past and had dented
filter rings, but
I
was a little disappointed that they hadn't mentioned
it in their
description of this lens. I related all this in a post
to the PDML and
*within half an hour* I received a phone call from KEH
with an apology!
(There was a KEH employee on the list.) And they
refunded $50.00 on my
credit card.
This was all without my even *asking* for a refund,
much less proving
that there was anything really wrong with the lens.

Phone 'em up.

Re: istd or istds or wait?

2005-05-23 Thread Francis Alviar
I waited for a while before deciding to buy. Then I
saw this good deal for an *ist DS online so I jumped
at the opportunity. Best decision I made so far since
soon after all existing stock of the DS sold out and
so far there's no new stock. My advice would be to
buy it now. You won't be missing out on anything if
you do. But if you are willing to wait for who knows
how long then by all means wait. Maybe there will be
newer and better options on the new model.

Here's a question for D and DS owners: What media do
you think the new DSLR would be utilizing? Seeing as
how the current rumor is Sony merging with Pentax -
Sony uses memory stick. If it's CF cards then DS
owners would be stuck with the current model until the
next round of Dslrs come by. Same thing with D owners
if the new model uses SD cards.

I don't think anyone can answer that question
definitively. I'm happy
with my two *istD cameras. The battery grip is
important to me as is the
availability of continuous autofocus in all shooting
modes. However, I
purchased my cameras before the *istDS was available,
so I never gave
it any thought. I'm very happy with these cameras. I
use them for a wide
range of hobby work and some commercial work,
including magazine car
photography and stock photography. I'm sure Pentax
will eventually
release an improved DSLR. They obviously intend to
continue in the business.
At that time, I'll sell one of my bodies and purchase
the new one. I
don't spend any time worrying about it. The current
cameras are serving
me very well.

The High Speed USB 2.0 port may be practical for some
but I prefer to
change cards. If you hook up the USB, and then open
the camera card
access door, it's like unplugging a live USB device.
Opening the door
(rightly) powers down the camera.

I've got Win2K. It restarts the computer.

There may be other risks. Be certain to tell Win to
"disconnect" the
device before accessing the memory card slot.

Sincerely,

Collin

It's nothing out of the ordinary - just a good,
drinkable
St. Emilion. Chateau Plaisance blend wine from
multiple

If you want to sample it, you should be able to find

I love it!

And not just for the subject matter, either!

Nice, spare, simple composition. It's the details
that make it for

purple on the
end of the cork, the scratches on the tabletop.

Just a terrific shot.

Simple is good!

Hi Boris ...

I don't understand what you mean by my shot being
"very thorough."

Overall I like your photo, but it has some elements in
it that lessen
its
impact. The most glaring, as i see it, is the tilted
horizon. It
looks
about 1 - 1.5 degrees skewed to the right. This tilt,
amongst other
problems it causes, works against the tilt of the
boat. By that I mean
since both the boat and the horizon are tilted in the
same direction,
the

Thanks Godfrey.

I didn't shoot RAW and I doubt there will be any other
detail in the glove part so I guess I'll have to live
with the blown highlight.

I'm still saving for PS CS. In the meantime I'll have
to learn with PS7.

If there's no detail data in those areas, if they're
completely
saturated, you can only make them darker. If the
original file is RAW
format, you might be able to retrieve some data if
only one channel is
not saturated (at least with PSCS and Camera Raw 2.4).

I'd look in used book stores for PS7 based books. It's
been superceded
by PSCS for almost a year now.

A fun shot, great colour rendition, dof's good (I like
that the band
members in the background are only a bit OOF, so we
get some
separation, but they're still very identifiable).

You caught her body in just the right pose (very much

Good shot.

Hi,

I've gotten good results (sometimes) by making a
selection of the hot
areas, feathering the selection as appropriate, and
using the healing
brush
@ 100% and then fading it an appropriate amount.
Katrin Eismann in
her
book, Photoshop Retouching and Restoring
(http://www.digitalretouch.org/)
has some other suggestions as well. I highly
recommend the book, and
Katrin often shows up on the Photoshop forum to help
out and answer
questions. This is the best Photoshop book I've
purchased for my needs
and
work style.

Martin Evening's book, Photoshop for Photographers is
also a very good
choice, and his book for v 7.0 can often be found on
eBay for a good
price.
I bought a copy from someone on the PS list for
$10.00, including the
tutorial CD which included QT movies. Martin
sometimes shows up on the
Photoshop list as well.

As for your specific problem, I doubt it can be easily
fixed very well,
but
in all honesty, I didn't fiddle with the pic or try
any adjustments -
just
gave it a quick eyeball.

I agree with the other posters.

Very good composition - that S shaped wall is a very
bold element.

Exposure's a bit blown out in parts, however. I have
no idea if it
can be fixed in PS, or if it needs to be reshot. I
think it's a
strong enough photo that it's worth the effort to tame
that
brightness, one way or the other, though.

On my monitor the sidewalk is far too hot.
Nice "S" curve composition but I'd crop the LH edge to
eliminate
building & sign.
If you can go back try to reshoot this in the early

Hope this helps.

Very interesting test Don.

I too own one of these lenses and I'm quite fond of

Been playing with it over the past couple of days

Here's a sample:

Taken at Irvine Spectrum. Please excuse the rather
harsh lighting. Taken during mid-day. Spring is
finally peeking around the corner and people are up
and about doing their business.

A few shot taken at LAX at night. Sorry for the
blurry photos.

Anyway the 28mm is really a dandy of a lens. I love
it.

Hope to see more of your tests of it and the 16-45mm.

Amen! I can't even explain the joy of using a manual
focus lens with the *istDS. Currently I'm playing
around with it and the Super Takumar 35mm f/3.5
screwmount lens. Granted you have to do one or two
extra steps to get exposure but what I'm shooting at
won't move away and there's no hurry in getting the
exposure. Instant gratification is just two extra
steps away.

Hello Francis,

I can highly recommend it. It is optically extremely
good - and gives
you the reach on the wide end. 16mm is visibly wider
than the 20mm -
you are comparing about a 24mm to 30mm in 35mm terms.
Quite a
difference.

Given KEH's conservative (to me) grading of their
items for sale, would you recommend purchasing a used
dslr from them? It would certainly help lower the
cost of getting into digital and I'll have some money
left for other goodies like a memory card and
rechargeable batteries, maybe a prime lens (FA 35mm
f/2). Not to mention that Ipod I've been asking the
tax return fairy for a long time. At least KEH has a
14 day return policy so anything bad that goes wrong
you could always return the camera.

I set up myself for that one didn't I?

What I meant to say was that the FR-1 is a SLR instead
of a rangefinder.

Whew!

I still have a number of 35mm cameras that are
rangefinders, Francis.

I also have a number of 35mm camras that are NOT
rangefinders.

2004-04-07 Thread Francis Alviar
Hi Boris,

I posted the original photo uncropped and unmodified.

It's a little bit better but not by much.

The FR-1 is not a rangefinder but a 35mm camera. Very
good camera with Aperture priority and manual
exposure.

I bought it prior to my acquiring Pentax bodies with
the intent of buying Zeiss lenses for it. So soon did
I find out the cost of such a project and in the
meantime was given two K1000 bodies for free hence my
intro into the Pentax world. Been obsessing ever
since.

Of course we don't. Well, me at least ...

Is this a range-finder camera? Pardon my ignorance...

Francis, it is a little soft on my focus. Judging from
the motion blur
of baby's hand and shallow DOF, I would think that
lighting was not
most favorable...

Technicalities aside, I really like what I see. It is
good the baby is
not staring directly into the camera... May be I would
have preferred
to see more of baby's hand sacrificing a bit of space
on the top...
Well, I am too technical today...

Hope it wasn't too senseless, my comments...

Help with A 20mm f/2.8 lens

2004-04-04 Thread Francis Alviar
I recently purchased a Pentax A 20mm f/2.8 lens. I
mounted it onto a PZ-1p and I noticed that it does not
allow for Hyper Program AE function. It only allows
for Shutter-Priority AE, Manual, Manual (Bulb) and
1/250. Any ideas on what is causing this? The back
of the lens does not look at all like that on a A 50mm
f/2 lens. Other than that it functions in Hyper
Manual mode so I guess it's ok. Can this be repaired?

Thanks for all your input.

Re: Advice on lens I purchased

2004-03-25 Thread Francis Alviar
Thanks for all your replies. I will definitely call
first thing tomorrow and negotiate for a return of the
item. It's just too bad that the lens is in that
condition. The packaging was fine when I received it.
 No dented-in corners or holes.

There is definitely a big speck inside around the
middle of the front optic. This lens is a major dust
catcher as it is evident in the sides of the lens.

I'll let you all know how the return turns out.
Unfortunately Adorama is out of stock on the new
condition lens that is why I bought this one. Ohe
well, I guess I could wait.

Thanks once again.

Re: What gear is on your "lust list" ?

2004-03-08 Thread Francis Alviar
Excellent question!

Here goes:

A 20mm f/2.8
FA 20-35mm f/4
FA 24mm f/2
FA 77mm Limited

I'd like to ask list members who own or have owned or
otherwise are contemplating buying the A 20mm and the
FA 20-35mm. If you were to choose between these two
lenses which one would you choose to couple with the
77mm Limited? I've been given the go-signal by the
CFO to buy the 77 Limited plus one more lens from the
remaining three. The FA 24mm remains a very
sought-after lens as evidenced by it being out of
stock from both Adorama and B&H. List members highly
recommend it. However I've checked the archives and
have read mixed reviews regarding the 20mm and
20-35mm. Which combo would give more versatility and
bang for the buck?

Thanks.

March PUG

2004-03-02 Thread Francis Alviar
Many thanks to Lon Williamson and to Ian Bromhead for
their very kind comments.

A few photos that caught my eye in this month's
edition of the PUG are:

A Girl in Uniform by Marty Ort
Fantastic! The look on those eyes make me wonder if I
should press the shutter or suffer the consequences of
doing so.

Pretty in Pink by Kevin Thornsberry
Wonderful photo. Almost 3-D like.

Karen by Max McRae
Excellent! From my monitor it looks like a painting.
Just wonderful.

Portrait of a Country Kid by Tanya Mayer
Excellent excellent excellent! I agree with a few
others in saying that this photo beats out the
Marlboro ads. You should be making money off of this
photo.

All the rest are just as wonderful. These are the
ones that just grabbed my eye.

I noticed that most of these photos were shot with
zooms. The one zoom that seemed to jump out is the FA
24-90. Very sharp. Comparable to a prime lens. I
might be in the market for one as soon as the "tax
refund bunny" arrives.

Thinking about GFM - OT

Re: My PZ-1

Thanks Dave. I like the 28-105 PZ lens a lot though I
haven't used it that much since getting it. I have
the f/4-5.6 version. Not a fast lens but very capable
for daytime shots. It's quite sharp stopped down.

http://www.photos.ph/image/75536

But like you said will be prone to distortion like
this shot:

http://www.photos.ph/image/96862

Just have to watch for such distortion when shooting
but otherwise a very good lens for walking about. It
balances nicely on a PZ-1(p). I'm positive you will
like it if you decide to get one. KEH has three
specimens on display right now.

Hello to all,

I have an opportunity to purchase a friend's PZ-1P.
Since buying it he ran no more than 10 rolls through

prefers digital point and shoot cameras instead.

Anyway, my question is: How much should I offer for
the camera? Since he does not need the money (wife's

range. One more question: How good is the 28-80mm
lens that came with the camera?

Thanks.

I shot a couple of rolls of color print the other day,
and since I
intended
to just scan the negs and process the prints
digitally, I dropped the
rolls
off at the local 29 min photo place. BIG mistake!
While there was, in
fact,
image on the negs, they appeared to look unprocessed.
The thick "beige
haze"
covered over the images for the most part. The man
said, "The film must
be
old." He did manage to get some sucky prints out of
them, but they will
not
scan. Period. I took the negs to Pro Photo Connection
in Irvine, CA to
see
if anything could be recovered. After much examination
and after
confirmation with film strips, the photo engineer at
Pro Photo
Connection
concluded that the problem was chemical in nature, the
negs had not
been
"bleached". The damage was permanent.

Lesson: Deal with professionals - only.

Bob...

you don't mind. With regards to the Pentax 645 and

work with AF bodies and vice-versa? More than likely
I will get an older non-AF version due to a lack of
funds.

Thank you once again for your advice.

Hello to all,

Just came back from my trip to the Philippines. Did I
miss anything? I've been scanning the posts and I
think I didn't miss much.

Just want to greet everyone a Happy New Year. May the
new year bring you lots of wealth, love, happiness,
and success. Not to mention more toys to play with.

I've created a small website where I will post photos
I've taken while on vacation. Please feel free to
critique the photos. These pictures were taken with a
little bit of haste as I was on a tour so composition
and lighting could be better.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures. More to come.

Re: How much film do you need?

2002-11-08 Thread Francis Alviar
I'm going on vacation in a few weeks. I've pretty
much been debating this issue since day one of
planning for my vacation.

I originally wanted to bring:

3 rolls of Provia 100f
5 rolls of Astia 100
3 rolls of FP4+ and HP5+
4 rolls each of Reala, Superia XTRA 400 and 800

Then I thought, "What if?"

So I am adding another roll or two of Astia. Probably
one of Provia, one more of Reala, and three rolls of
Tri-X. That should round it out.

But then again, "What if?"

I guess you can never have too many rolls of film in
your bag.

A few years ago I was out running various errands.
When I stopped
at home, I put down my camera, but then I decided to
make a "real
quick" midnight grocery run and figured there was not
much chance
of wanting to photograph anything, so I left the
camera at home.

Some idiot set the grocery store on fire while I was
in it.

Standing in front of the store watching the smoke
billow out and
listening to the approaching fire engines, I figured,
"Hey, I'll
just pop over to the 7-11 across the parking lot and
grab a roll
of film, get the camera out of the car, and take
pictures of this."
I got about ten meters before I remembered that I'd
left the camera
at home.

Since then, I carry a camera with me whenever I go
out.

I usually carry either the MX or ME Super with 50/1.4,
28/3.5 or just the 45-125/4.

Sometimes it's the SP1000 with 35/3.5 and 135/3.5.

All in a Lowepro Nova 2.

I need a backpack for my upcoming trip. I am very
much sure that I will be doing a lot of walking and
carrying a tripod. I want to balance out the load.
Anybody got a spare backpack they want to sell? I am
on a tight budget but let's make a deal.

Re: Travel Kit

2002-10-28 Thread Francis Alviar
Thanks to all for your responses.

Wow! If a little question like mine can stir up
emotions imagine what a bigger question or a statement
claiming something or another can do?

Anyway, the lenses I mentioned are exactly what I own
and what I will be bringing. I will be home-based for
my trip so I can leave extra lenses at home and just
bring what I need for day trips. Don't have time to
get bigger glass and the funds aren't exactly kicking
in either so I'll have to make do with what I have and
just try to add faster glass in the future.

I am bringing a tripod though so that will help. As
far as film is concerned for slides I am only bringing
100 speed film (Provia 100F) and will probably push it
one more stop if I need to (more likely I would have
to). I do have Superia Xtra in ISO 400 and 800 for
grab shots and P&S camera shots. I am also bringing
B&W film (ISO 100 & 400) just in case I want to
photograph in black & white.

Filters (warming, polarizer, orange, red) are in the
bag.

Again, thank you for your tips.

Plain Text Attachment [ Save to my Yahoo! Briefcase |

Just picked up a mint SMC M100/2.8 and it got me
thinking. (Anything to
get
my mind off this Digital discussion) I've always had a
craving for an
80-200/2.8. They are certainly convenient and very
high quality lenses.
Problem is, they are big, heavy and very expensive.
So I was thinking. Would I rather go out with my
miniature 100/f2.8, my
200/f2.5, and maybe the 120/f2.8 or the 80/f2, as
opposed to lugging
out the
80-200/f2.8.
Certainly there would be less changing of lenses with
the zoom. But, if
you're
like me, you often end up using the zoom more or less
at its two
extremes
most of the time — At the 80 end or the 200 end.
Not a lot of in
between
stuff. In fact, I usually end up at the long end
wishing for more. The
zoom
seems like overkill if you're mostly using it at
around 80 or 100,
surely the
80/f2 or the 100/f2.8 is a better choice. And it's
even pretty big at
the 200
end compared to say the 200A*/f2.8 or the older 2.5.
Maybe I'm better off without the 80-200/f2.8.
Just some food for thought. What do you think?

M42 or K-mount (or both) - OT

2002-09-19 Thread Francis Alviar

Help! I'm in a bit of a quagmire. Well, not really.
I just have some spare time today so I decided to ask
the group this question:

Have you ever brought two different camera systems on
vacation? Specifically I am referring to a Pentax
K-mount system with 2 bodies, 4 lenses plus an M42 to
K-mount adapter plus a Pentax screwmount body with two
lenses. The purpose of bringing along the screwmount
stuff is solely for B&W photos plus the chance to use
the lenses (35mm/f3.5 & 135mm/f3.5) on the K-mount
body for slides and print photos. I find that the
screwmount lenses, even though not exactly fast,
provide me quite excellent picture quality.

The alternative would be to bring just k-mount stuff
and two bodies and just alternate color print film
with B&W film and have one body devoted entirely to
slide film. I am contemplating doing this when I go
on vacation. I just want everyones opinion on the
pros and cons of doing so.

Not really mandatory to answer. Even off-list would
suffice. Thanks and have a nice day.

RE: How did you start photography

2002-09-12 Thread Francis Alviar

I suppose it's my turn. This post will accomplish two
things. One is to state how I started in photography
and the other would be to answer another post of how
and why I came upon the Pentax brand. Here goes:

Back in the 80's the photography bug bit me. Being
naive about photography I simply marched into a store
and purchased the first camera I saw - a Minolta
(can't remember if it was the x370 or x700) - and
proceeded to burn film like crazy. After a few weeks
I received as a gift a Nikon A4004s from my then
girlfriend - now my wife. The Minolta was returned
for a refund. It was a big mistake now that I
realized it. The Nikon functioned pretty much like a
point and shoot camera and not a compositional tool.
I used it alright but just for snapshots at weddings,
parties, etc. I never really got into photography the
way I wanted to. Then last year while viewing the
photos taken from our recently concluded trip it hit
me big time - I have to learn the art of photography.
Shortly after that I enrolled in a photography class.
But I didn't want to use the Nikon since it is mainly
auto focus and I wanted to learn the hows and whys of
photography from a manual camera. So I went the ebay
way and bid for and won an auction for a Canon A-1. I
didn't know about the Pentax line then. My wife must
be my lucky charm because soon after acquiring the A-1
she walks up to my cubicle (we work together) and
hands me not only one but two pristine condition
K1000s complete with 50mm/f2 lenses and one 24mm/f2
Vivitar lens. Their department was switching to
digital. That is how I came upon the Pentax brand.
Being curious about this brand of camera I typed in
"Pentax" in Google and lo and behold I came upon all
these neat information about the Pentax line. In
short since August of last year I have acquired an ME
Super, sold it, and re-acquired another. I have also
added to my collection an MX and a Spotmatic, a
handful of lenses, filters, teleconverters, and in a
few days a couple of form fit cases courtesy of a
fellow PDMLer. The K1000s are long since gone but I'm
pretty sure they are being put to good use. My
decision to use Pentax was partly influenced by
comments I read from a product review website,
comments from the PDML and it's members and largely in
part to the quality of photos I get from the Pentax
cameras I have been using. I'm still learning the art
of photography. For me (and I guess for a lot of
folks) it is a constant learning process done by trial
and error method. I try something and the negative or
print will give me the answer. It's fun and it's an
escape from the pressures of family, work, etc. I
will never put down my Pentax. Well maybe I will but
only after someone prys it off my dead hands. The
Nikon and the Canon are still with me and they get
used once in a while but my Pentax cameras are my
constant companions and will always be my go to
equipment. The simplicity of these cameras and the
quality of images I get are second to none. I hope
you enjoyed reading my rather long post. Thank you
and have a nice day.
