RE: Time lapse
I've done some with the Pentax K-01 and the WG-2 (the K-01 has more time-lapse time/sequence options). This video isn't terribly fancy, but I did use both cameras for it: https://vimeo.com/55700128 Joe -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: FS: Two Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II lenses (one AF, one MF)
These lenses are still available -- photos available on request. If interested, email me at jj...@cornell.edu. Thanks for the discussion about these lenses sparked by this posting last week! Two lenses in excellent condition -- the AF Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II and the MF (with Pentax-A contacts) Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II lenses in Pentax mount. The AF lens seems to need a -1.0 EF adjustment on most Pentax digital bodies; the MF lens needs -1.3 EF or so (this seems to be typical of Sigma lenses from the film era on current Pentax bodies?) These are nice compact prime lenses and the AF version is not something Pentax has ever had in its own lineup (only the very large and expensive 24mm f/2.0). See a decent selection of comments and reviews on these two lenses here: http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-af-super-wide-ii.html http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-super-wide-ii.html Both are multicoated, have 52mm filter threads and I believe I have two copies of the clip-on "Sigma perfect hoods" that go with them. The AF lens focuses in the "correct" Pentax direction; the MF lens is opposite. F-stop ring is the correct Pentax direction on both lenses. They both focus down to 0/6 ft./0.18 m. Asking $135 for the AF lens, $85 for the MF. Re: Enablement/Replacement!
I also have a Pentax K10D kit that I would be happy to sell at a below market value price to list members -- due to the fact that I recently purchased a terrific Pentax K-7 from a list member for a very good deal! Let me know if anyone is interested: Pentax K10D body, cheapie version of the standard zoom, two batteries, charger, original box and other materials. RE: Overnight snow time lapse (Pentax W90)
The W90 lets you do it in camera -- set interval (one photo every five minutes) and total duration (I think this was 7.5 hours) and then shutter button to take the first photo and start the process. Result when finished is an .avi file (size/framerate based on the movie settings the camera was already set to). On tripod, of course. Screen stays off and camera is in powersave between shots. It will let you check on progress (time remaining) by pressing the power button (this also gives you an option to end the interval shoot early). Overnight snow time lapse (Pentax W90)
Overnight snow time lapse of my back porch in Ithaca, N.Y. I think we had 8 inches or so already at the time I started the time lapse around 11 p.m. We've ended up with 18 inches or so, though it's hard to tell with all the drifting ... Optio i-10
I really wanted to like this camera, but what a disappointment ... this is the review I put up on amazon.com. I'm surprised there's nothing else out there yet on this camera at all, considering the interest it sparked around the Web when the design and images of it were released back in January. But there's only my review on the black one and (oddly and separately) one person's review on the white one at amazon.com ... "Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough old Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the retro look, styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually quite nice, with a good balance, small but really nice right-hand grip, and a pleasant grippy texture. It was a bit light (plasticky) for its size. But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by 2010 standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash photos were terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add an extra second and a half to the process. And images were soft overall, but softer as you zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise and speckling was apparent at nearly all ISO speeds. As far as positives about image quality, in bright daylight, at 80 ISO (the sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and the lens did show good flare resistance. Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available as digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately. Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry about its durability. I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet face recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably well, though the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of it. In fact, basic flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very muted colors. All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010 p&s) with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step backward from anything else I'm using today that I had to return it." Question -- best mail order film processing option?
Question to all still shooting film (whether often or not) who no longer have a local lab and who don't do the processing themselves -- what's the best option for mail-order processing if what I really want are pretty good prints, the negatives, and a CD or the ability to download decent scans of the images? (In the continental U.S.) Years ago I used Mystic and then Ofoto, but what would you recommend now? I think some of the online printing/photo upload services (i.e. Shutterfly, etc.) that may also offer film processing/development do so as an afterthought; I'm looking for one where they're likely to continue processing film and therefore take some pride in it. Pentax sighting: Shutter movie trailer
Just saw this on TV last night and took a screen grab from the trailer online. I saw a different TV trailer, though, that showed the Pentax twice. A Hasselblad, a Leica and some digitals can also be seen in the trailers and online gallery from the movie. http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/Pentax_sighting.jpg Anyone want to share any stories about "spirit photography"? The movie makes it seem that ghosts or spirits can show up on both film and digital capture, though film gets a plug in the synopsis: "A newly married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after a tragic accident. Fearing the manifestations may be connected, they investigate and learn that some mysteries are better left unsolved." ... Re: OT: Canon JPG files changed by Photoshop?
I don't know if it matters if this is Mac or PC, but I think just opening it Photoshop makes a thumnail icon or a "Photoshop" jpg icon that "goes with" the file rather than the generic jpg icon it had ... even without saving it, that might be enough for the camera not to like it. Re: K100D shutter sound like...
I've found that it sounds much louder than the *ist D (I don't have the *ist DS or *ist DL to compare). It reminds me of the difference between the Super Program and the ME Super, for instance, or between the PZ-1p and the ZX-5n, with the *ist D being the significantly quieter of the two. K100D is a slightly muffled "clack," whereas the *ist D is a subtle "snick." I find that the K100D shutter isn't _objectionably_ loud, but it is a _significant_ shutter sound. Re: Who here is using the oldest DSLR?
I purchased an *ist D last March when the price of the body only dropped to $400 on Amazon (through Cameta). I already had a K100D, my first DSLR, purchased in September 2006. I picked the *ist D up to use as a second body and to keep at work -- I also had the idea that while I may someday replace the K100D, there might be some historical and collector satisfaction in having Pentax's first DSLR. As per John's note below, does anyone else use the FA 28/2.8 as the main lens or one used most often on the Pentax DSLRs? I often choose it for the slightly wider field of view than the 35/2 even though it's a stop slower (I have the 21/3.2 as well). I thought having the 21 and the 35 would mean that I wouldn't use the 28 as much, but I often find it's either the perfect choice (or the perfect compromise). I haven't eBayed them yet, but this might really be my last try here before putting them up ... * Pentax Super A body. EXC+ condition. This camera feels and operates like new. It's technically the exact same camera as the Super Program, but it somehow feels like a Super Program "Limited" in all black. I will include a standard Pentax strap, along with the deluxe "European Camera of the Year 1983" strap that was available. Front finger grip, body cap, original Pentax case (fits even with the front finger grip on) and instruction manual included. http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/Super_A_kit.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/Super_A_front.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/Super_A_top.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/Super_A_rear.jpg Price: $110 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S. • Pentax SMC-A 24-50mm f/4 lens. KEH bargain condition, but closer to a real-life EX as far as I can tell; no major blemishes, dust or marks. More solid-feeling than some of the other A-series zooms like the 35-70 and more metal in the construction than the A 50/1.7 or 50/2. http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/24-50.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/24-50_side.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/eBay/24-50_rear.jpg Includes Pentax front and rear caps. $110, includes shipping/handling/insurance with USPS Priority Mail shipping in the continental U.S. Interested in both? $200 will take them together. Two lenses for sale: • Pentax SMC-A 24-50mm f/4 lens. FS: Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 for Pentax K
FS: Pentax K version of Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 VMC lens. Original wide-angle hood by Vivitar is included. Lens is in bargain condition by KEH standards, but still quite nice. Glass is very nice, no nicks/scratches, only a little minor dust between elements. Some definite wear to edges of aperture ring, and a nick here and there is visible on the outer edge of the focusing ring. Hood is also in bargain condition with some wear, but intact and threads are fine. Benefits of the f/1.9 lens, as opposed to the Vivitar 28mm f/2 lens, is that it is an actual Series 1 lens (dating to the late 1970s, I believe) and that it has the "floating" group of elements that kick in at close focusing distances to improve image rendition, sharpness across the frame. You can feel the floating elements engage at a point on the focusing ring, which is normal. FS: SMC-A lenses, more
A few items for sale. Photos available on request. * Pentax SMC-A 35mm f/2, KEH EX condition. Pentax hard case and front and rear caps included. I sold this lens a few months ago to a PDML member but it was returned because of a significant amount of dust between the elements. I have since had the lens cleaned, and all is clean except a very minor amount of dust between two elements. My repair guy said getting between these two elements to clean would have marred part of the innards of the lens holding the elements together. The remaining amount of dust should not affect photos. This is a beautiful A-series prime lens that shows up fairly rarely. Same optical formula as the SMC-M version, I believe, but with the improved coatings. Absolutely perfect on a Super A, Super Program, P5, Pentax autofocus bodies, etc., or even a digital Pentax SLR. Re: Prettiest/Ugliest Pentax Equipment (was RE: New Sony)
There seems to be an almost lovely clunky functionality to the SFX series now -- they seem so wedded to their time, a late-1980s, funky LCD-and-switches style. I initially thought the PZ-1/PZ-1p series were ugly bulbous plastic blobs but I later came to love their form factor, ergonomics and size -- and this is from someone who has a huge appreciation for the older Pentaxes as well, from the SV through the K series, LX and Super A. I just consider the more modern bodies a different animal. Re: For PZ1p / Z1p users
I as well used the PZ-1p for quite a while and never used the User Set feature. But I know it's useful to some photographers, though I would certainly say he should get to know the camera and most of its functions quite well before using the "User Set" functions at all. By then, he'll have a pretty good idea of what particular set of shooting conditions and settings he'd most like to have available as a quick memorized setting. Re: Google Earth (speaking of pictures)
Many of the U.S. metropolitan areas are covered in much higher resolution, with an astonishing amount of detail visible, down to less than a meter. There are quite a few small cities covered in this high-res level. Joe I just learned of this site yesterday, (http://earth.google.com/). Pulled up a "freebie" and played with it for a bit. It's an satilite collage of overlapping stills (on a clear day or cloud penetrating IR conversion) that allows your earth view of choice. A friend told me about using this site to locate a remote lake he wants to fish. If allowed to zoom in on its own, the image becomes very fuzzy. You'll find it helps to back off a little. Still, I was able to locate my house by identifying a very small corner park 'prox a half block from it. This is just FYI. It's something to do during out continuing record-breaking rainy season. RE: Z-series feature I miss on the ist D
Does that method use the flash's contrast control mode? Joe That's right. Works brilliantly on the PZ-1p; don't know about the SFXn. Nice even lighting, no shadows, and much more natural-looking than bounce flash alone, IMHO. Examples here: http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=528842 Rick --- Markus Maurer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi Rick And with that setup did you just let both Flash at TTL setting and no further corrections for indoor shots? Frankly I haver never used the build in flash on the SFXn alone or in combination so far, would be interesting. I guess there has to be a minimal distance of about 1.5 meters to get good results and to not overexpose faces? greetings Markus >
Re: Qs on s/m lenses
The auto/man switches all moved freely, on or off camera, until the Super-Multi-Coated Taks were introduced in 1971. The restriction was made for the open-aperture ES and Spotmatic F cameras to come, to remove the possibility of getting crazy meter readings by having a stopped-down lens feeding a light reading to a camera thinking the lens was wide open. When mounted on Spotmatic II and earlier cameras, the S-M-C lenses do allow for free movement of the auto/manual switch, but not off the camera and not on the ES/ESII/Spot F cameras. Joe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've got 2 Super Taks (50/1.4 & 24/3.5). On both the Auto/Man switch moves freely between the two positions. 1) IIRC, that's not right. Re: Feedback: SMC Pentax-F 24-50mm
I like the A version as well and I did have the F version for a while. Very good construction on the A version, not bad at all on the F version (a bit better than the F 35-70, at least) and optically, quite good -- very good to excellent at least. I have an 8 x 12 enlargement of a black-and-white winter scene taken with the A 24-50 and a Super Program and it holds up very nicely at that size. I did experience some serious flare in a difficult lighting situation with the F lens, at the 24mm setting (even with an appropriate hood in use), but still a very good lens overall. I think the 24-90 FA is quite a bit better through the same 24-50 range and handles flare better, but this lens can be found for about a third of the price. I can't really justify keeping one just as a backup body, though, so I'm putting the less minty one up for sale. Re: auto focus body recommendation solicitation
There was a third party manufacture, (very small operation), machining battery grips for the z/PZ-1p from aluminum. I used to have a bookmark, but that was a couple of upgrades and a hard disk crash ago. I did a web search just now but couldn't find them, (didn't try very hard just looked at the first couple of pages of links returned by Google). Someone on the list may still have that link since it was posted here. Here's an e-mail I got from them last summer after I inquired about the price: From: "Ruth and David Cam" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Joe Wilensky" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: Prices for PZ-1p battery grip? Re: auto focus body recommendation solicitation
Hi, Scott, I'd also recommend the PZ-1p, and I second nearly all the recommendations already made about it (I haven't found it to vibrate much -- I think the stronger-sounding shutter, motor wind, etc., may give that impression. The K2 has quite a kick, as does the Super Program/Super A. But it is true that compared with the PZ-1p, the ZX/MZ series is whisper quiet). The best improvements that the PZ-1p had over the PZ-1, I believe, are the easy-to-dial-in flash compensation in all modes and even using the built-in flash; the ability to spotmeter with pre-A lenses (the PZ-1 will only allow centerweighted metering with M and K lenses); the 2-second mirror pre-fire self-timer setting; the easier navigation among the three metering modes; the in-viewfinder exposure meter (PZ-1 only gives a +/- sign); and the 28mm coverage of the built-in flash (PZ-1 is only spec'd at 35mm). Joe Howdy, gang! A very brief background before I get to my question: I have a K1000, MX, *ist(film), 6 M series primes, and two auto focus zooms. The *ist's complete lack of metering with the M lenses has become frustrating. So I'm in the market for a body that will fully support all the K mount lenses I currently own. The MZ-S is the logical choice here, but the budget (read: wife) says no. I'm considering either an ZX-5(n) or a PZ-1(p). After digging through Boj's site, I'm still unsure about the differences between the ZX-5 and the ZX-5n, and between the PZ-1 and the PZ-1p. The latter of both models seems to be a bit more desirable, but are the differences significant enough to warrant ruling out the previous models? Would those of you with experience using these bodies have any recommendations, advice, alternatives, etc.? Also, I've never really understood hyper manual and hyper program. Would anyone care to briefly describe them? Thanks a bunch! -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com
Re: Orphaned Power Zoom Lenses
If nothing else, I like the "retract-to-shortest size" the lenses do when fully supported -- turning the camera off while power zoom is engaged not only shortens the lens to the zoom setting that keeps it to its shortest physical size, but also focuses the lens to infinity, also another measure that puts the lens at its shortest physical size. But even the MZ-S doesn't fully support this feature, only shortening the zoom without moving the focus to infinity. Some of the power zoom lenses don't change size at all when zooming, only when focusing, so this function is useless then, on the MZ-S. Thankfully, at least, the PZ-1/PZ-1p both support all these power zoom functions and features. Joe The list has been consumed with passionate debates about "green button wars" and camera engineering, nobody has mentioned a MAJOR lack of support for a key feature that Pentax pioneered! What am I talking about? Power Zoom, of course! It was bad enough when Pentax released their new top-end MZ-S without supporting Image-Size Tracking, Zoom Clip, and Zoom Effect capabilities. Pentax did at least include Power Zoom contacts in the MZ-S so that the power zoom capability in certain FA and FA* zoom lenses didn't completely go to waste. Unfortunately, Pentax has fully abandoned their many FA and FA* power zoom owners with the *ist-D and *ist-Ds. Wouldn't it have been ridiculously easy to include power zoom contacts? So now I have two FA* lenses with Power Zoom motors that may never be exercised again. Am I the only voice crying in the wilderness, or does someone else out there miss Power Zoom?

Re: Premium prices for used Pentax glass continues!
Yes, and the A and FA series 35/2 lenses have long carried a premium, though there was a time not too long ago that the M and K 35/2 lenses could be found for very reasonable prices, even when prices on the 30/2.8 and even the pancake were high. Re: Pentax FA 28-105
I picked this zoom up in the all-black version <http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/zooms/short/FA28-105f4-5.6-ii_black.jpg> (much nicer looking than the silver, I think) from KEH. As it has the reputation of being the "worst" of the three Pentax 28-105 variants (and a Tamron rebadged lens), I didn't know what to expect, but it performs quite well. I have had all three 28-105 types at one time and I still have this lens and the power zoom. This IF lens is sharp, contrasty, and significantly lighter and more compact than the powerzoom version, even though it takes 62mm filters. It comes with the bayonet hood and the barrel doesn't rotate when focusing, so polarizers are easier to use (although the hood doesn't have the little removable door at the bottom, like the new 28-105, which makes using a polarizer even easier). And though it shares the telescoping barrel design of the new 28-105, making it seem long and a bit delicate when zoomed out to 105mm, it feels a bit sturdier than the newest 28-105 version (though the powerzoom still feels the sturdiest of all three). It should sell, used, for about $125 USD in excellent-plus condition from a retailer, closer to $100 on eBay, perhaps. Joe Just came across another FS zoom - a 28-105, this time. Not 100% sure which variant it is, but I think it's most likely to be this one: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/zooms/short/FA28-105f4-5.6-ii.html As usual, I would like to ask for opinions on the performance, reasonable price level etc. Hmmm... PZ-1/1p grip straps with a digital twist?
KEH has two PZ-1/PZ-1p grip straps available and listed at quite reasonable prices. The interesting thing is, they're described as having a "few dead pixels." Anyone know how to fix dead pixels in a grip strap? ;-) Joe
Re: A vs F 70-210 [Was: Re: A 35-70 question]
Because of the ED element, yes, I think I've read that from a few people, the F 70-210 had an edge over the A (but not by much). Joe On Mon, 18 Apr 2005, Fred wrote: the five VS1 70-210's.) (Another possible example - some claim that the F 70-210/4-5.6 is better than the A 70-210/4, although I have not found that to be the case with the F that I have tried.) Not been around too long (couple of years?) but I haven't quite read this. Except if the claim is for overall comparison, including for example, weight, zoom creep or AF. Has there been a claim that the F is better optically? Kostas
Re: Backordered: SMC Pentax-FA 135mm f/2.8 (IF)
I had ordered a new FA 35mm f/2 from Adorama about a month ago. It had been listed as backordered for a while and has continued to appear as backordered on their site. They did deliver mine this week, though, but perhaps the lenses that came in were all sent out to fill backordered ones and there are still no new available ones in stock. I'm wondering if these 35/2 FA lenses are a new batch, though. I had one a couple of years ago and this one seems the same in all respects. It's still labeled "Japan," too, not "Vietnam," so perhaps that's a good thing ... The serial number on mine is 52840XX. Anyone want to check their existing FA 35/2 lenses or any ordered from B&H in that last shipment to see if it looks like a new batch was manufactured? Joe --- David Oswald <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I was about to place an order with B&H for the SMC Pentax-FA 135mm f/2.8(IF) lens. As recently as last week this was listed as being available as a special order item with a 7-14 day lead time. But today it now lists as backordered. I must not be living right. I'm still waiting on my SMC Pentax-FA 35mm f/2 AL from B&H too. It seems Pentax is running some real shortages lately. Or we are about to see some new lenses coming. Who knows? Free or for trade: Pentax hotshoe cover Fk
A lightly used Pentax camera strap I purchased had a Pentax hotshoe cover Fk in the little pocket on one side. I believe it fits the ZX-7 and possibly the *ist film camera (?) Free to the first person who wants it (I'll pay domestic U.S. shipping, international extra), or free for trade if anyone has bits to fit the PZ-1/PZ-1p, Super Program/Super A.
