Re: OT: Urban photographer of the year

Hmm...

Not sure what to think. Some good shots in there. Some average shots.
I find the watchmaker portrait difficult to look at. That rendering makes me
cringe.

The de-icing in Calgary looks like they use flamethrowers to melt the ice.

But I do like the phone cam shot of winter in Chicago. That's a wonderful shot.

Thanks for posting!

Cheers,

frank

Two words: Time Zones.

Liberals pretty much swept the Atlantic provinces. By the time the polls closed
in Eastern time zones (Ontario and Quebec) it was all over. The only thing to
consider was whether Pierre Jr. was going to have his majority. Took about
another hour to confirm that...

Re: Slowing down & being creative

2015-10-18 Thread knarf
It was ~most~ interesting to me. I read the articles yesterday but had to leave
a response until today.

I have to admit that as wonderful as digital is, some of my best photos were
taken on film loaded in my Spotmatics, LXen, MX and Leica CL. Is that because
I had to go slower, check (and be totally aware of) exposure settings and ISO
(always 400 with TriX)? Is it perhaps because by being punctilious and
methodical about exposure and focus, that carried over to composition as well?

Or maybe I'm just not the photographer I used to be.

Whatever the case may be, Burnett's results are most impressive.

Thanks for posting.

frank

Very cool!

But Margaret Bourke-White, "forgotten"? Geez, that's a stretch. She had a
stellar career and was one of the best known photographers of her time.

Side note: Tina Modotti was a close friend of Frieda Kahlo and Diego Riviera.
I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure she had an affair with one (or possibly
both) of them. Her character was in the movie Frieda, played by Ashley Judd.

Re: PESO - Drafting Swans

I think that's a good way to put it!

And (non-sequitor alert here) I'm kind of freaking out with my new phone's
predictive typing. It's not just telling me how to spell and finish words that
I'm in the midst of typing, it's predicting my next word. Like as I finish
typing "kind" and it gives me "of" before I've even hit the "o". Wow. A bit
science fiction-y but wow.

Anyway, thanks for the comment, Ken. Much appreciated.

Re: OT - PESO - and and explanation

Thanks, Ken. Taken with and processed on phone cam. I have no idea how accurate
this screen is but I would say, "probably not so much."

I added the vignetting to darken the sky a bit as it looked flat to me. Perhaps
not the best decision? LOL

Appreciate your comments!

OT - PESO - and and explanation

2015-10-11 Thread knarf
Here's a PESO I sent last week:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/10/shades-of-autumnal-splendor.html?m=1

No one saw it because it was sent from my new phone. I set up K9 but didn't set
it to plain text. So I've been responding and commenting to every PESO, from
Ken's ice to Bob's French weekend to Marco's soft box to Jack's autumnal scene
and wondering why every other commenter was thanked but me. LOL.

So I'll go back and comment later. But I will post this photo taken at
Etobicoke Creek earlier in the week. The leaves are beautiful this Thanksgiving
long weekend - just that nice mix of bright colours with green.

Hope this is seen this time and hope you enjoy. Comment if you will.

Re: And now... a fake moon photo

2015-09-29 Thread Knarf
Well, here's what I think about Rhine II: I don't know.

I've never really seen it. I've seen representations and scaled down copies of
it but before I can really comment I'd have to personally experience one of the
six existing copies of it and spend some time with with same. After all isn't
it's scale part of tbe message?

That being said, I think part of what many see as problematic with it is summed
up thusly: "I coulda takin' the same thing with m' iPhone when me 'n Mabel wint
ta Europe there, las' summer!"

But of course Jeb didn't and if he did, it surely isn't hanging up in the Tate
Modern just now, so there must be something special about Gursky's piece.

I like the proportions, the colours and what it says, the fact that the Rhine,
or at least portions of it and other industrial "working" rivers, are about as
far-removed from Nature as an Interstate Highway or the Autobahn.

I have a problem with its value, to be sure, but that has more to do with the
fine art industry than whether it's a good or great photo. Its value (or more
precisely, its price) make it a pretty juicy target for reactionary "critics"
in the right wing tabloids and make it hard for anyone to be objective...

I've said too much already. So I'll stop. But I'm with you, Ann!

Cheers,

frank

Re: And now... a fake moon photo

2015-09-29 Thread Knarf
To be fair, I don't think Gursky ever said Rhine II "represents reality":

"I wasn’t interested in an unusual, possibly picturesque view of the Rhine, but
in the most contemporary possible view of it. Paradoxically, this view of the
Rhine cannot be obtained in situ; a fictitious construction was required to
provide an accurate image of a modern river."

Re: PESO -- Cloudy Moon (was) Re: Total Lunar Eclipse

I walked along the lake for about a 1/2 hour, hoping the light clouds would
lift, but they didn't. Gave up, went home. About midnight I brought the garbage
out and there it was: about 1/4 obscured by the earth's shadow.

Quite spectacular!

Like Ann, I don't have the equipment to do anything about it, but at least I
saw it. 'T'was pretty cool.

And earlier, after a significant dry spell, I got a few okay street shots
today. Can't wait to look at them on a big monitor and process a few...

Bach's cello suites are among the most beautiful music ever written. Du Pré's

Re: OT: Life imitates art

2015-09-27 Thread Knarf
Amazing.

Thanks for posting.

On another, related note, I've always wondered Constable (or any master) would
have been able to do with a camera. As a painter he has the huge advantage of
being able to amalgamate various elements from numerous studies, or he could
even just make stuff up (like that dramatic sky).

However I can't but imagine that he'd have been a magician with a camera; a
great eye is a great eye...
