The Bill Gottlieb photo collection at the Library of Congress
Hi all, Just recently I learned about another new treasure of photographs on line, which I'd like to share with you. It's the collection of Bill Gottlieb and it mainly deals with jazz photos from the late 1940s. Gottlieb was a writer and a photographer at the Downbeat (jazz) magazine and according to his wishes, his collection at the Library of Congress has now entered the public domain. This means that anyone can use them, except where rights of privacy and/or publicity may apply. (I haven't really been following the list, why I apologize if this already have been mentioned here.) Here is the start of his collection at LOC with thumbnails (at the beginning there are many clippings): http://tinyurl.com/32h8awz If you want to see or save any clippings, first click the item, then on the new page note the options to the left of the web page. This is where the collection of just photos start: http://tinyurl.com/39n58zo Note that you can enlarge the pictures on the screen up till 1024 pixels. But not only that - you can also save big size tiff versions! This is just great. :) Most of you will have seen at least one or another of his pictures on covers of jazz records and such, (mostly shot with a Speed Graphic btw). Here's a chance to see not only well known pictures but also a great load of previously unpublished ones. Being very interested in jazz and having played some, I find the collection immensly interesting and have already spent days at it. I learned about all this by chance at Flickr. Here's a link where the LOC has published a selection of Gottlieb's photos on Flickr: http://tinyurl.com/2fl2fmt This is the way every muséum, archive or other institutions holding picture collections should work. Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol
Hi all, Since list members don't seem mind very much the OT subject of alcohol, I've got one for you. A hot local political issue has been new regulations regarding drinking alcohol in outdoors public places in town (or densely populated areas). It has now been prohibited. Would be interested in (briefly) what regulations there are in your countries and communities. Is drinking alcohol outdoors in public places allowed, or not? A restaurant etc. with right to sell alcohol will still be able to serve it and customers allowed to drink it at an outdoors terrace or ground of that specific restaurant. It wouldn't be regarded as apublic place in terms of this regulation, which mainly targets drinking in the streets, parks, beaches etc.. Thanks, Ken. Yes, I have started looking into a number of How to:s and tutorials. I will also start to compare what the Bridge browser has to offer. I've been very satisfied in using ACDSee for more than ten years. Regarding the RAW converter, I actually still haven't been shooting much RAW, but now may be the time to start doing it. And it's typical that you run into some basic screen layout issues that annoys you. Made me go back to PS5 where I've got the layout I like... Has there been any other particular improvements of the use of tools and filters? Re: David Bowie, 1983
Hi, Yes, I'm a bit late on this. :) As one who often shoots music, a (former) musician and general fan of music, I just want to tell you how much I like your Bowie-pictures. There are so many factors involved regarding light metering in concert lighting, that you should be proud of the results, particularly on slides of 200 ASA. How come you caught him in Germany? Were you stationed there in the military service? You also seem to have got to shoot a few from a comparatively high angle. Were you able to freely move around? It seems to me that quite a few of them may be of interest to some Bowie-publicists, I think. Have you thought of contacting any possibly interested parties? Re: Ugly event terms for photographers - What do you think?
What do you think? Igor I think that every one (like many thousand photographers) who thinks that their proposition By clicking the Submit button...etc. is ridiculous, should use the box Additional info to say By clicking the Submit button I do not at all agree...etc. What's EBC anyway? Those terms make everyone involved in the EBC look ridiculous too. Tell them so. Britney Spears tried to pull off a similar one when recently touring Sweden, demanding that all photographers transferred all rights to their pictures to her (!) after a few weeks. All major newspapers refused and not a single picture of her show was published in the papers. If I recall correctly also the Spice Girls tried to do the same a long time ago with similar results, except that they also were booed at because of that. Lasse From: Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org To: PDML@pdml.net Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 6:52 PM Subject: Ugly event terms for photographers - What do you think? I just looked at a registration form of one of the swing-dance events, and was shocked by the rules they establish about taking photographs at the event: Photographs: By clicking the Submit button and registering for EBC, you agree that in return for allowing you to photograph during EBC, that you will abide by the following rules: If you post images, they CANNOT have watermarks. If you post images, EBC retains the right to use them in any way. You CANNOT sell photographs taken at EBC. If EBC requests copies, you must provide them without watermarks in ^ high-quality digital format if they originated in digital format, otherwise prints will suffice. EBC reserves the right to determine acceptable usage of photographs taken at EBC. EBC retains ownership of any and all photographs, digital, film or print, ^ taken at EBC. These rules apply to ALL photos taken at EBC, past, present and future. http://www.ibalboa.com/registration.aspx I can understand events where photography is fully prohibited (although it is somewhat strange for community-oriented events like most swing-dance events are). I understand that people who wrote this statement may not be professional event organizers... but they are greedy! They hire photographers-volunteers without any compensation and with exclusive rights to photographs... Am I too emotional about this? What do you think? There's nothing in contract law that says a contract has to be fair to both parties to be legal. Of course, it depends on what you mean by fair, but at least in contract law of the Scandinavian countries, a contract regarded as (something like) grossly, unreasonably unfair to a party, may be declared invalid. I'd be surprised if not a similar regulation will be found everywhere. (I'm not saying that the EBC terms constituate such a contract, though.) Hi, John! Thanks. As far as I can tell I think they mainly followed what legendary Olympic founder Baron de Coubertine said: (something like:) The most important thing is not to win, but to do your best in fair competition. I don't think there was any St Helena runner this year. They were a rather small team, mainly doing golf, swimming and shooting, but not making it to any prominent positions in the charts, as far as I can tell. It might be worth researching some recipes for contemporary developer for the older papers. Test strips first. Well, I don't have any darkroom set up and neither does it seem that I will be getting any, although I have been thinking that I might... It's just that I keep thinking about what a great picture coould be realized on this empty paper... Maybe I'll just frame one empty paper and I and anyone can project their hopes and ideas to it. I guess I just like the paper as such so much. Anyway, the boxes are nice and while thinking it over some further I might start with separating the boxes from the papers and make some good use of them. There's a guy buying an enlarger lens from me, I might ask if he wants the papers for free. Thanks, Cotty. Much appreciated. I do need the 2,8, and at least around 17mm at the widest and at least 55, preferably a bit longer, and also IS... I think I'll do some test shoots to check it more carefully: In some instances I didn't like what I saw, but it may have had to do with my shooting. No, I didn't know you sold your Canon gear. What happened to your Canon-fitted Pentax 85mm? I read about the Epson and I've often been thinking I'd find me something similar to just be able to go out lightly dressed. The Epson RD wouldn't really fit me though, but it got me thinking about it again. Glad to hear you like it and I can see why. It's true what already has been said a number of times on the list - you approach the world and shoot differently with different types of cameras. Yes, there is a weariness, it's global and not only of American politics. Agree. I watched the game too. Spain is a very worthy European champion. It was a top quality game from the first minute to the last. Thank you, Anthony! (And everybody else who replied.) It defnitely looks like you found it. I might add that the lady behind the car is Marilyn Monroe, probably stepping out of one of the 20th Century Fox studios, and I'm just trying to find a possible or approximate date for the shot. At first I was thinking it may have been one of her own cars, she owned and drove a few, but then I realized that it might just as well be one from a Limo service, which I know she/the studio used quite a lot. Charles W. Cushman, color slide photographer 1938-1969.
Just in case it hasn't been mentioned on the list before, i'd like to point you to a very insteresting photo collection, available on the net since a few years back. It's the life time collection of color slides shot by one Charles W. Cushman. What's interesting is that he very early started shooting color slides. He traveled quite a bit in various states and captured many scenes which will show the evolution into modern day U.S.A. He lived mostly in Chicago and in his later years also in San Fransisco, why there are particularly many photos of these cities. He also photographed a lot during a number of trips to Europe. His earliest shots are from 1938, his last shots are from 1969, a few years before he passed away. Funny thing is that there is no indication that any of his pictures ever were published nor that he was looking for getting them published. Recently I spent a week's nights browsing trough the whole collection by year. It was like watching a great documentary in many parts. Fascinating. I picked this shot from Sep. 17, 1938 in Victoria British Columbia for you as an example. http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/cushman/full/P01449.jpg If you click the following link you'll get to a smaller version with info on the picture as well as other links which will give you an idea of how the collection is organized. (Note: in some instances, like this one, the image has been restored from a discolored original. In those cases you can also find the original by a link at the bottom right corner. I gave it a go at a few of them and thought I could do a better restoration than presented there.) http://tinyurl.com/33kltf This is a link to the index (Home) page of the collection: http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/index.jsp Enjoy, Lasse -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
For the experts. Determening distances in a photograph.
Hi all, I'm doing some research on the earliest constructions of my hometown, Mariehamn. At the link below there is one very early photograph of the town, from around 1870. In it there are still a number of houses, farms, of the village where the town was founded in 1861. I'm trying to establish the exact location of these constructions, so that I can draw them on a current map or walk there and say: This is the south-west corner of that house, this is... etc.. (The photograph, originally in BW, is a working copy of mine, where I've added a few things in color just to help me see various parts more clearly.) The constructions which I'm interested in, are to the left, on the hill, as well as on the slope towards the photographer. I know, or will be able to pin down the exact locations of some houses, or corners thereof. Some of these have been marked with a blue x. Now, I believe that it should be possible, to actually determine the exact locations of these buildings just by going by this photograph. (Let's say it was shot with a lens equalling 50mm on 35mm film camera.) Am I correct or mistaken? If it's possible, can anybody help me out in how to go about doing it, or do I have to redo my geometry classes? http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6894839size=lg Thanks for your comments, Lasse. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

From: Stan Halpin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, Stan! Good points. I wonder - no dates imprinted on the borders of the slide mounts? Standard practice for most processors here in the states... Later slides, from early 60s onward do have month and year imprinted on the borders. However those from the 50s don't. It seems that many rolls from the 50s were just processed and not mounted, which he did himself (or he may have opened the original mount and mounted them in glass frames, without making any notes on when they were processed, or shot for that matter). Two separate thoughts. 1. Long ago and far away a friend and I assembled a best of the year slide show based on slides contributed by members of our climbing club. My friend was an editor with National Geographic, and in her office she had a light table that has huge - probably 3 meters by 1 meter. Made it very easy to lay out dozens and dozens and dozens of slides, sort them, rearrange them... You might want to think about how to improvise something like that to help in your sorting. I have two table slide sorters that will allow for some 30 and 40 slides being laid out. I'd have use for a couple of more though and have been thinking of making another one by using some glass plates and small lights. Maybe I can make use of an old flatbed scanner no longer in use and put a small light in there. 2. This situation with your uncle's photos is a case where perfection should not be the standard of success! Don't worry if you cannot identify each and every person, each venue, and the dates associated. Don't think like a historian or archivist, think like a photographer! I won't worry in case some shots will remain unidentified. There are for instance landscape views which are so general it would be impossible to identify where they were shot (although in many cases (by looking at previous or later shots of the same roll) I can pretty much assume around where it must have been shot, close to certain villages or parts of town etc.). And if I have to choose between thinking like a historian/archivist or like a photographer I will of course appöy my standrad method of approaching such options and choose both of them... :) However I think that by the help of other people I will be able to pin down dates to at least seasons of a year, and in some cases months and maybe even specific dates (Midsummer night's eve, Christmas, birthdays of young and old, are the kids able to walk yet, funerals, 1st of May, dates of major construction works, new street lamp posts, different types of antennas on the roofs, almost each year from the late 50s the local harbours have had new constructions being made to it, new streets being asphalted certain years, new pavements, dates of new ferry boats and ships (almost hundreds of them...), stores or offices being opened at certain adresses, particular official events, new car models, demolitions etc., etc.). Go through and pick out interesting photos - those with good natural portraits of people, good scenic and texture and detail. Yes, that's what I will eventually do. Assemble a show and or publish a book of the photos. Get the citizens to view the results, they will be glad to help with the identification of the historical details. Get local historians and librarians involved in the historical part, and you keep on digging for the good photographs within the archive. Yes, I will go along those lines. Luckily I already personally know many people that will be of help, at the museum, people who have served in community planning, on boards of various companies and shipping lines etc. I just realized that I also could send a selection of photos to a few biologists who can give me an estimate as to when different types of trees, flowers and grass will bloom, or not yet ave done so or already did... Or a zoologist may estimate a date for young birds, or butterflies in case I'll spot any... In a few instances I think a farmer will be able to rougly guess a date depending on what farming tools are visible in a shot etc., or when cows were allowed/moved to certain areas etc.. I also realize - and I've been thinking about this many times before - that I also could make use some sort of a solar clock which would enable me to measure the angle/hight of the sunlight, since this actually will be more or less exactly repeated each year. I guess an astronomer could provide me with tables on that for each day. At least theorethically you could also accomplish this by making your own solar clock - a stick or a pole in the ground and then you you could shoot a picture of the shadow it will make each sunny day at certain times of day, both it's angle/direction and lenght, etc.. Then by looking at photos you could try to read the angle of sun light and determine around what date and time of the day it probably was shot. Or in many cases where constructions are still there I could go

Radio-telegraphist is OK but radio-telegrapher would be better. Thanks, Mike. I hope you manage to do something with this archive. For me, when faced with huge tasks like this, the only way is to make sure that I do _something_ every day until it is finished, no matter how small that something is. Yes, I will later try to follow that routine. However, there simply are some initial steps which needs to be done and the only way I can see me getting it done is to fully throw myself into it and get it over with fast, or there is a chance that the task might seem too big to start off on. In this case I just thought better not to think it over too much, just grab the whole mess and quickly make it manageable for further work, which can be done the way you suggest. Maybe a local museum would be interested in getting some of the donkey work (basic scanning) done in return for first consideration of the results? I've been thinking about it, but for now, until i get a basic order to it, I wouldn't like to turn it over to anybody else. Besides, I also realized that I am probably the only person who is really able to do it reasonably right at this stage - I have enough experience and knowledge of dealing with films and images and in my family there is no one else with the same knowledge of family history or of how to go about getting information needed, let alone the interest to really do the work. I took the decision to start by just doing rough scans of the earliest and most important pictures as a means to more easily sort them and get a better overview. Later I will make a selection and try to properly clean them and make some archive scans of them. I have so far limited my work to these early pictures and excluded the great amount of later photos. From the 60s onwards the slides will have processing dates which will make it easier. I will also soon sort out the earliest negatives and try to sort these out. However, they are at least in various pockets and envelopes, although in complete dissarray, why I can deal with them little by little. The early slides however needed immediate attention because of their poor and in many cases unprotected state. I will have to make some decisions though as to how to deal with the total body of photographs. Probably will set out to do one, and just one only, look through all the slides and negatives and make a selection (and maby some notes) on the spot, immediately scan the selected ones etc., till I think I've gone through it all, and then see where it leaves me. The amount of material is so huge that you run the risk of getting lost or overwhelmed by it ending up nowhere. Furthermore, all this time and work that I already spent on my uncle's pictures, is something that I'd really need to put into my own stuff, which already since long has awaited similar work. In any case, I would dearly like to see some of them myself. I will soon get back to you all with a selection or two. Maybe I ought to point out that this is not a discovery of an unknown treasure of great photography. However there is a lot of good photography with local documentary value to it, quite a lot of very good landscape and scenery photography, a lot of nice family pictures, and surprisingly (to me) many good portraits of family, friends and aquaintences. My uncle's photos. Longish.
Hi all, Sorry, this got much longer than intended. Two years ago my uncle (my mother's brother) passed away. Peacefully, at around 84, I believe. He was a photographer. (Not by profession - he was a radio-telegraphist (literally translated from Swedish - if you know what his profession would be called in English, please report (or in German, French, Spanish and Italian too). He'd be in charge of tele communications for instance on a ship. However I believe he only did one trip in the mid 50:s. He got too sea sick to carry on at sea! :) So instead of travelling the high seas (which a lot of Alanders did and do, since international shipping is and has long been a major industry of Aland) he took a job at the local Coastal-radio station (literally translated). I am now happy he did, since this meant that he'd shoot a lot of pictures locally in Aland and his and my home town, Mariehamn.) After his wife also passed away last year, I first told his daughter/my cousin, that all his picture archives, negatives and prints etc., MUST be taken care of and I also offered me to do it. I actually had been emphasizing this already with my uncle (who appreciated my thoughts - but he was already starting to lose some of his intellectual capacity) as well as with my aunt/his wife, who to my horror first gave me some ambigious statements, making me wonder if she actually had disposed of it all. She had at least at times expressed thoughts like I'm so tired of all his photos and those things, I think I'm going to throw it all away (Sheer horror at the thought - not only did we, the family, know of his unique family photos of which we had been given many copies, but I also knew/thought/hoped there'd also be pictures of great local documentary value in his archives.) Luckily, it eventually turned out that his photo archives had been preserved after all... (Sigh of relief... right? :) ) Since also his daughter, living abroad, at first when having to deal with emptying and selling her parents' house, didn't seem to care that much about the photos or my enthusiasm for them, I now realize that all the time up till now, the question about my uncle's photo archives, actually has meant some considerable concern, almost stress, to me. Anyway, during the last couple of months I have been helping her cousin clearing her (family) house, as it was sold. I guess I slowly gained the trust and understanding for my views on the photos, since I now have been given my uncle's photo archives (at least as a deposition and for getting them sorted out, cleaned up and making some sort of an inventory of them). I also got a lot of other old camera and dark room stuff, some a little interesting but most of which I will have to find another home for. My uncle - Erik, by the way - had the good taste of early on - that is in the early 1950s - choosing to shoot color slides, at a time when not too many people did so around here. For a couple of weeks now I have spent most of the days and nights doing everything that possibly can be made to the most important part of the archives, that is sorting out and cleaning his earliest slides. (From all his some 60 active years there will be thousands of slides, and thousand of negatives). Well, regarding his archives there is indeed a lot more that could have been desired. Listen to this: I have yet to come across one single note of date, place or persons depicted to any of his slides, negatives or single photographs! Not one single peace of information anywhere! :) (This makes for some interesting intellectual detective work on my part. In a way I don't mind, since it is very interesting. On the other hand I'd really want to spend the time on my own projects. However, I'm starting to think there will be at least an exhibition of his photos. Maybe a book, but I'm not sure about how to finance such a project.) Yet, he was very well aware of what was considered to be even the most basic method of filing negatives and slides. From late 1940s onwards he'd subscribe to photography magazines where such things repeatedly were discussed, just as we are discussing it on this list. He was in his daily work as well as in his capacity as a local politician, very much aware of the necessity of properly filing documents of all kinds. Yet, regarding this one personally very important part of his life, he never applied even the most basic filing method. My guess is that he simply never got started, although always thinking he'd have to, and in the end never got about to start while all new pictures added mounted to an even bigger and too big a task... The only thing there (thankfully) is, are quite a few albums (still only a small part of his output) that he, on my insisting it, started to put together very late in his years (but as I indicated, he was already starting to lose his capacity to do it completely) where many of his later prints were sorted, but

From: George Sinos [EMAIL PROTECTED] The detective work might make an interesting community project. You might consider scanning a number of the photos that are representative of places and times. Putting those on a public web site where community members can offer comments as to the identity and time frame may be very interesting. Hi George, That's a good idea. In fact it is such a good idea that I already thought about it. :) Though I haven't decided yet exactly how I will go about doing it. I will definitely put up a few pictures and inroduce this find on my local blog. Maybe link it to another web gallery, asking people to help out identifying buildings, places and people. Or I may approach the local news papers as well. Giving a few samples and a link. Or/and contacting the local muséum, which at times has arranged exhibitions of old photographs asking visitors to help identifying places and people. People around here seem to enjoy doing that. (I'd say that the Alanders are particularly fond of caring about their past in such a way, because they will likely find old relatives and places they have a relation to in one way or another in the pictures.) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fascinating story, Lasse. Good to hear from you. I hope we get to see some of your uncle's photography when yo u've sorted it out and made some scans. Happy holidays, Paul Thanks, Paul. Yes I will soon post a few samples for you all to see. I already have started scanning while trying to sort out and rebuild the original rolls of film. There is quite a great variety of transparency films: In the fifties mostly Agfacolor of different types, but also Kodachromes, Ektachromes, Ilford, Anscocolor, Adoxcolor, Perutz etc. and later also Fuji as well as others. Some of them have retained beautiful vivid colors and quality while others haven't fared that good, exhibiting severe discolorings, as well as real physical abuse of different kinds in some instances. From: John Bailey [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lasse, It fascinates me to go thru past family photos. I haven't been able to lately but I have this continuous desire to find all of my fathers photos at the old homestead. John Hi, John, Make that desire come true, as soon as possible. You won't regret it. (While you bitterly will, in case something happens to them before you get there...:) ) If your father is still around, bring paper and pen and make notes. If he's no longer around, track down any- and everyone available who may be able to help out in bringing those photos alive. It is a fascinating journey to make, if you will. And if you get hold of old negatives, not seldom large medium format and much more densed with information than regular 35mm film, it's amazing what you can bring out of them. (I recently bought an Epson V700 scanner which will scan any negative up to A4 size). Hell, even small Instamatic negs keep astonishing me by what can be retrieved by some digital tweaking, in case they need some. From: Christine Aguila [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lasse- maybe a big family gathering--a bit of a photographic wing-ding somewhere in addition to the web site suggestion below. You may not get all your answers, but you just might minimize the detective work you talked about. Best of luck with your project. Cheers, Christine Hi, Christine, Thanks for your suggestion. It's a good one, except for the fact that there actually no longer is that much of a family, useful for these photos, to gather... : /. However, I have already by phone talked a lot to my aunt, a favourite relative of mine and kid sister of my uncle, now approaching her 80s, living in Sweden. And we've decided to get together come spring when she'll come visiting again. I don't want to wait that long, so I will send her a selection of photos to view and identify when she's spending Christmas with her sons (she doesn't use a computer). She will get some Christmas present for sure. Her brother shot a number of very nice portraits of her which she probably has never seen, as well as many other family pictures of her and her family. She and I (like my mother, her sister, who passed away ten years ago) both share this interest and joy of documenting and caring of everything family, so to speak. I have also talked to a number of other people, relatives of my uncle's wife as well as just people from around here who remember him, events and places etc.. I also have a list of people, friends of his (in some instances also of me) who can not only be of great help to me, but probably also will be greatly surprised with many new great pictures of themselves, their family and friends, many of which are long gone. As soon as I get a useful selection of pictures gathered I will approach them, either bringing them prints or inviting them to come by for coffee and a show at my computer screen. Re: Geso: Johanna V2. Cropping alternatives
The third from the left on the gallery page is the ultimate best. Boris From: P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED] The third new one is the best crop. It just is. Thank you guys. Much appreciated. Come to think of it, the lighting arrangement was kind of funny. I had prepared for available light only, but she was late and we were fast losing light as the sun set. I did have a flash with me but knew it wouldn't work well and a few full body flash shots turned out bad, as expected. However I had brought along this flashlight (torch?) just because I knew it would turn dark. We were in a very rocky area with trees and bushes and it would be dangerous to walk back in the dark. It was a big, fat light with a handle. Anyway as we finally lost light, I thought I'd try to give it a go with the flash light. However, I hadn't brought anything to hold it. Handholding the light in one hand and shooting with the other wouldn't work either. I ended up sitting with folded legs, with the flashlight tightly between my knees, having to turn just my lower body to aim the light right, while trying to keep the camera still and focus. She also sitting down in front of me following my directions. It was a completely knew, and funny feeling experience of body control and coordination to get it right, but I did get a handful interesting shots by this arrangement, the posted one one of the best. Fall greetings from Scandinavia
Hi all, Thought I'd just drop by to say hi, since I happen to be in the neighbourhood. Around here we are currently having typical late fall weather - rainy, windy, decreasing daylight and some (quickly disappearing)snow falling. Temperature still a few degrees above Celsius zero though. Although I haven't been posting in a long time I've still stayed subscribed. It's nice to see that this list continues to be a good one, providing good advice on all aspects of photography as well as being a generally friendly community, the occasional and obviously inevitable personal thrifts aside. Good to see so many old-timers still around, good to see new members having joined. I haven't had the time to follow everyone's work as posted in PESOS, GESOS, the PUG etc. but still it is inspiring to follow how much members continue to work on improving their shooting. As some of you may recall, I'm now shooting Canon since going digital two years back. Last winter my father passed away at old age after a number of years of declining health. He left me (and my sister) some funds, why I've had the opportunity to invest in some additional photo equipment. I've bought some good lenses and accessories, the 40D camera (keeping the 20D as a second), some studio equipment, a good flatbed scanner (Epson V700), printers as well as having upgraded my computer etc.. By all this it feels like a new start in many ways. I will be able to work at a more professional level and hopefully in the long run make investments pay. I'll be back with some questions in separate messages. Negatives and plastic
I have been scanning some old medium format family negatives and I am also trying to get them archived better than before. I have a lot of these plastic photo sheets (what do you call them - you know regular ones with pockets for photo copies to be placed in binders?) and thought I could put the negatives in these transparent pockets. However it struck me that I don't really know whether the plastic may emit chemicals that might cause damage to negatives. Anybody in the know about how negatives (or for that matter transparencies) go together with different kinds of plastic material? Scanning with Epson V700
As mentioned in a previous post I bought the Epson Perfection V700 flatbed scanner which also scans negatives. I seem to recall there are other members using this scanner and I simply would like to get some comments on using it. I have already been scanning negatives using it's original software. But I also got the Silverfast software. However I haven't yet looked into it. What's the word on Silverfast? Any other comments, experiences, hints or advice on aspects I might overlook on the V700 very welcome. Since there are so many pictures being posted here, I'm surprised to get requests for even more pictures, by me. (Or maybe you only wanted recent pictures - in that case I will have to get back later.) These are some pictures of a young local friend, Johanna, - a then girlfriend of a friend - that I met one summer night. I think naming a thread with a list member's name and the word a*e in the subject line is punching too far below the belt. I'm equally surprised with many list members' reactions to JCO:s posts as I am with JCO:s willingness to fight at such lenght for whatever view or statement which has been challenged. Personally I can enjoy a good fight. And JCO:s a very good fighter. Even when responding by calling names in capital letters I think he's mostly right on the mark with it. Usually it has simply been called for. And yes, I also enjoy seeing JCO being challenged. He mostly asks for it too. However, if these flames or threads get to be too much for many members, or the list, to take, I think it's not fair pointing finger at JCO only. FS or for trade. Old stuff maybe for spares. Some Pentax.
Hi again, As I mentioned in a previous message I've got some old stuff that just take space and that I intend to get rid of one way or another. (If anyone's got any Canon EOS lenses or any other useful Canon stuff in working order, they might be considered in a trade.) For now I've got only two Pentax items to list: The 28-200 zoom. Haven't set a price yet, but I think it will be competitive for a buyer. The 500 FTZ flash. This is a very good flash, unless you need later models. A bit hesitant in letting this go. Sorry, for the moment no price set, but I think it will be a good pricefor a buyer. I also have quite a number of filters of various types and sizes, included one or two Pentax filters. Ask if interested. Also a number of odd flashes, included a big early 60-s Pentax one. Also some Pentax lens caps and hoods. Ask if interested. Non-Pentax Many of the following non-Pentax items might be considered only for spare parts. - Minolta x-300 body w MD 50/1,7. Both body and lens very clean and nice looking, except that the foam inside back plate seems partly have disappeared. However I'm not sure if the body works and do not have a battery to test it right now. If anyone shows interest I'll look into it. There might be another Minolta lens around. - Fujica AX-5 body w x-Fujinon-Z DM zoom 43-75/3,5-4,5. Body and lens clean and good looking. However I don't believe the body is working. There is a cover missing for the battery on front. - Mamiya ZM body w Mamiya-Sekor zoom 35-105/3,5-4,3. Body and lens clean and good looking. However shutter blades are damaged and would need replacement and repair. - Praktica LTL body. This was and worked liked new ten years ago when winding just jammed or was blocked. Used to be a favourite M42 body of mine and I always thought I'd get it fixed. I haven't but do believe it will be an easy fix get it going if anyone think it's worth anything. Or for spares. - Canon Prima 105 Point and shoot. (35-105/3,5-8. lens). This I believe works as it should. Looks good. - Olympus APS NEWPIC zoom 600. 30-60 lens. Looks good, everything works well. - Konica Super Zoom Zup 80 RC (Point and Shoot). 40-80 zoom lens. I believe it works well and is an able camera w IR remote control. - Canonet 28 w 40/2.8. A crack in the front finder glass. Works, but I'm not positive on shutter speeds. If interested in anything, mail me and we'll work something out. Just ask, and I will try to be as specific and correct about condition etc. Thanks, Lasse -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: Way OT: How I spent my summer
From: Paul Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks Lasse. Good to see you here. Thanks. I'm hoping this will be the beginning of the next part of my life. Well, I'll share those hopes for you. But one never knows. All we can do is to keep pounding away at it. I think writing is a habit. If you do it every day, it becomes a part of your life. It's like dieting. You just have to get started. Let's see if I can too. In fact today I contacted two publishers by telephone regarding a project I've been thinking of for a long time. Not a novel though. I will have to submit a draft or a synopsis, and we'll continue from there. Anyway, I guess there is enough headroom on the list to allow for a bit of literary OT for a change among cars, beverages, dogs and OS:s etc.: I gather you have been writing a lot, however mostly shorter things as I understand from earlier posts by you. When writing a (first) novel, you deal with a completely new aspect of writing/telling - the extended form, the development of the story etc. - has this posed problems or dilemmas to you while writing, or have you been able to write this draft without any particular agony about how to find a form which benefits your story the best? Re: The JCO survey
Hi there, John, No complaints from me on your posts. (That is, other than the annnoying upper case letters at each linebreak.) (In fact I am slightly amazed at how you manage to stay on topic in the long run of posts and also at to what length you find it wortwhile arguing your case, so to speak. (Btw. It has also struck me that looked upon as a series (of posts), yours could actually be described as a (fairly unusual) minimalistic approach to list postings (the term used as in music and fine arts - a motif that is repeated with slight changes each time presented.) ) Not necessarily supporting it, I can also appreciate why you are using the strong language below. (To be perfectly honest I had a chuckle at it, but maybe that's just me and my peasant background...:-) ) Anyway, I go back some eight years as a member on this list (I don't recall if you were already here or if you arrived later) and just for the record I want to state that wouldn't hesitate a second to do business with you and I would have full confidence in you wanting to do it right. You are getting really [EMAIL PROTECTED] low To make comments like that about me on this list. I do not rip people off and I am not a crooked ebay dealer. Did we come to an equitable agreement on that Issue or NOT? Now I am really f%#$%#ing pissed. That's totally uncalled for. I suggest everyone Go to ebay and check my feedback. You are a freaking Low life to say something like that especially After we settled that minor problem to a mutual agreement At the time. In fact, that's it, FUCK YOU dude! My ebay record speaks for itself, you are one full of Shit asshole lowlife to say that kind of horseshit About my business practices when there is nothing To back it up. You've replied to me with your disgusting diatribes when I have gotten fed up with you and replied in kind. Regardless of how people address you, you can choose to be civil, but you don't. In fact, one of the list members noted that he's left the list several times because of your posts. He wasn't even writing to you, just posting a general message. Your comment was Screw you, dude ... (See below) I think that your foul mouth and abusive language are so much a part of you that you aren't even fully aware of what you say or how you come across. When I bought the K50/1.4 from you on eBay, and told you the front element was lose, you replied with a challenging, abusive email. Of course, I'll never do business with you again. Re: Way OT: How I spent my summer
That's great! Congratulations on your achievments so far. Well done to grab that bull by it's horn, so to speak... I did literature for my first round at university, have published some, have had expectations that I'd go for a novel, but haven't really tried. Yet. Maybe yours will be an example that might push me closer to trying it too. Keep us posted on your progress. Lasse From: Paul Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Saturday, October 21, 2006 2:47 AM Subject: Way OT: How I spent my summer After having written several hundred magazine articles and countless advertisements, I finished the first draft of my first novel today: 70,700 words. It will probably grow a bit as I revise it, since my early revisions have found me adding more detail and transitions. But i'm very pleased with the plot structure. It's the first person, present tense narrative of a schizophrenic advertising writer who gradually grows more insane. The narrative is divided between the reality based character and his deluded counterpart. Every time the narrative switches to the alternate personality, the chapter ends and a new one begins. The working title is _Both of Us_. I think the ending qualifies as a shocker. I sketched out a plot for it many years ago and wrote a couple thousand words at one time. This summer I decided that I had to write it. I'm not getting any younger. I started in July and finished the first draft today. Feels good. Revisions kick off Monday. I've revised as I wrote, so it's pretty tight for a first draft. Hope to have it ready for submission in about eight weeks. This explains in part while I've done nothing more than photograph my granddaughter this summer. I might add the following links to the first one posted. http://www.vsw.org/research/fmf/roll-c/selle-c.html http://www.vsw.org/research/fmf/roll-h/roll-h-intro.html http://www.vsw.org/research/fmf/roll-c-d-intro.html I find the whole thing quite intriguing and fascinating. Then I always was interested in pictorial(?) documentaries and such. Also I find the story about this rather unknown fellow photographer from forty years back slightly touching in whatever he was out to accomplish. And he didn't even have any memory cards... I'm in two minds about it. While my personal choice is to select, crop, and edit any image before putting it on the web (or otherwise displaying it), that does mean that what *you* see is a reflection of my taste as well as a record of the events. With a set of slice of life images like these it is useful to see the entire record, with the only filter being the unavoidable one - the photographer's choice of when to take the shot.
