Old Girl

2018-08-05 Thread Morris Galloway
Sometimes a photo goes beyond the K-1, the 50mm lens, and the technique,
and simply captures the look of a girl that looks with love at the
photographer, and that gizmo in his hands. To her, he is her world, and
some of us have been blessed to know that kind of thing throughout our
lives.  Oh, and that really is a nice shot.

Re: Sad news this morning

2017-01-16 Thread Morris Galloway
Had the same headline in our morning paper. Back when it was not an
animal rights statement, nor was it P.C., my mother took me and my
little sister to see the Ringling Brothers circus when it was still a
Big Top. They stopped their train by an open field in downtown Oklahoma
City by a railroad siding, pitched a GIANT tent, had some smaller tents
with 'side shows' and put on a fantastic Three Ring circus where there
was something going on all the time in all three rings, if I can
remember back over fifty years, except when the human cannonball shot
from the cannon and landed in the net. There were aerialists, both high
wire walkers, and trapeze artists, men getting into cages with growling
lions, and I thought, at my young age, that the elephants were doing
what they did in a fair exchange for regular food, no predators
harassing or perhaps killing the calves, medical issues being taken care
of quickly, because replacements were expensive and then had to be
trained, and there was quiet a size and strength discrepancy that could
have proven to be awkward for the trainers, should push come to shove.
But that was the late 1940's and early 1950's. There were jugglers,
knife throwers, and so many things going on at once I thought my head
would swivel off. We thought it was grand.

Ain't there a single country boy in this group? Grousing about the

They are TRUCKS. They are meant to haul Hay, take Bossy, or a couple of
heifers, or a sow, or whatever -- where ever they need to go. Or bring
hay or barbed wire and fence posts to the quarter section (poor),
section (rich) that you are farming. And Bossy don't care about bounce.
If you care about bounce you are driving too fast on those dirt roads.
Now, about this
150/1500, 250/2500, 350/3500 stuff. Here's the poop. In Heavy Duty
Work or Drayage (Heavy load Short Hauling) here is how these haulers
are rated: Load Plus 100% Overload. Thus a 150 or 1500 (those numbers
mean NOTHING) is duty rated at One Half Ton -- Plus a 100% Overload or
-- Ta Da -- a Ford F150 or Chevy/Dodge/Whatever 1500 is rated at, and
will, should, is designed to HAUL a One Ton Load of Beeves, Mutton,
Pork, or Fence All Day Every Day at Farm To Market Speeds, over Farm to
Market Roads. Ain't nothin' changed about that since Henry was alive.
And the F250/C2500 are of course the Three Quarter Tonnage Version, Plus
Overload, Meant to Haul, Day In, a Ton and A Half. Not You and your city
butt. Rather Cows, Swine, whatever. And the Mighty F350/3500? That is
the One Tonner, Meant to Haul Two Tons, over Farm to Market Roads (dirt,
asphalt, rutted, pot-holed, road-graded, occasionally Actually Paved) at
1940's to 1960's speeds. Guess what? They will do that. All Day. Want a
smooth Ride? Buy a Jaguar XJL. But at my place, when I put on my
Justins, my Wranglers, button up a blue chambray work shirt, grab my
Wells Lamont Gloves and Bailey Hat (Stetson's are for Church -- or
Court) and head out to back where the trucks are parked, I ain't looking
for a carriage ride. There. Have I shamed enough of you to quit
bellyaching about 'soft rides' so we can all start talking about

Focus Motors --Failure #4

2016-06-19 Thread Morris Galloway
Can I de-lurk and Bitch? Fourth SDM focus motor just died. That is three
into the DA* 16-50/2.8 SDM. It is now Awaiting shipment out for
repair. And then yesterday, and again today the DA* 60-250/4 ED IF SDM
just failed. I will simply ship them together -- when they both
return the 60-250 I will have SDM Replacement Motor Number Six. This is
horrible abuse of a customer. These lenses should perform. These are
not cheap consumer lenses. And they are not on cheap cameras. K-3,
K-5ii, K-5. So now after this colossal failure rate I'm supposed to get
excited about a K-1 and similar results after buying a couple of new
lenses?
Is the SDM motor just crap? Bought a Tamron 16-50 replacement as a
spare on the 2nd DA* 16-50 repair -- Tamron has worked without
complaint, and it gets used more. I have more confidence in it. And
just got a Sigma Bigma that covers the 60-250 and more. The motor in my
DA* 50-135/2.8 SDM is the only one to last -- and now it will probably
crater just

for spite.

I am not hard on them. Don't bang em around, don't use them on sports
more than six or seven days a year. And never,, zero, zilch, no
problems with non SDM lenses. Got them going back to manual focus
Spotmatic times, on the shelf ready to "adapter and go." I've even got
a Contarex bought new in 1962 that still works. O.K. One of the Zeiss
lenses needs a CLA, the 50mm f:\2. The other Zeiss's are all right.
That's a 54 year old camera! And these lenses can't work eight years?
(16-50) Obviously not. Can't even work three without going into the
shop. The 60-250 is two years old. Where is my consumer
representative? My Ombudsman? What is the solution? Pull out and
sell-out as so many of our hotshots have done -- eh Cotty? Help!
Anybody! SOS.

PESO - vintage car

2015-05-17 Thread Morris Galloway
Being late as usual, I noted a couple of non-standard items on this
beauty. First is the 'Rising Quail' radiator cap, a very popular
accessory, because the wonderful Model A had such fabulous initial
acceleration from a stop. There is really no problem keeping up with
modern traffic in a Model A, up to around sixty mph. Hence the hunters
and farmers/ranchers among us will appreciate the comparison to a quail
that has been flushed.
The second is the Klaxon horn, which was not OE, I don't think. But
they sure are fun to sound! Great photo of a really fun car!
(Oh, nut-jobs like me notice Henry Ford's penchant for naming the
two-door Model A's "Tudors," and the four door versions "Fordors." The
guy was a serious self-promoter.)

Is Anyone Happily Using ISO 25,600 for Anything?

2014-10-21 Thread Morris Galloway

listed as 1,600 ASA, and it was pushable --
sort of pushable. And the results obtained were not as Good as 25,600.
During College, went out on assignment for a print magazine to a den on
iniquity, a GO-G0 bar (!) that was
all soft green spot lights and drunk college kids, and shot a roll. I
got some shots. The patrons and maidens were visible and clear. But
there was so much grain the advertiser thought it was taken inside a
cereal factory. Publisher had to sue for the quarter-page. Alas!
   Wish I had a K-5, or 5ii, or K-3 then! We've come a Long Way
Baby! Sure I use 25,600 , and I turn and walk back inside with my

RE: Children by Joe Dixon

2012-04-03 Thread Morris Galloway

Lurker pulls his head out to say:

Two of our best commenting on a stunning shot by Joe Dixon.

Frankly, what Joe did was impossible. First he used a Film Camera, and
an old one at that. A Pentax LX that could be Thirty-two years old, if
he has the Early Version made the first year.

Next he used a lens without auto-focus on two moving subjects. At close
range, no less. Supposedly this lens could be up to 28 years old. A
rumored Pentax A* 20mm f:\2.8 ED. Frankly I doubt such a lens was ever
made.

The whole thing sounds made up. Hmph! Film, no less.

Re: Photography in public places (knarftheria...@gmail.com)

2012-03-31 Thread Morris Galloway
Lurker Galloway crawls out from under his rock to comment on Doctor
Theriault's legal analysis of public photography and the police.
Exactly like his photography, it is precisely thought- out, clearly
executed, and devoid of ambiguities. Which should remind all that he is
apparently as good at law as at photography and bike riding.

Not that anything needs to be added, but I can't help myself, so I press
on --
The police, to a man (or woman), started life as a person first,
and was trained in a skill-set that taught them they should expect the
public to obey, and yet would face frequent defiance. So they are taught
to enforce compliance, using the gun you see, or the back-up gun you
don't see unless things go horribly wrong, and finally the
'weapon-retention system' which is police jargon for the 6" Benchmade
knife you will never see until they are in a desperate fight for their
lives, trained to use it to "cut you off of the gun" by severing your
arm so severely you cannot grasp anything, or if that fails, they then
open up your belly so you can concentrate on holding in your intestines,
while they get away.

Granted that is somewhat graphic, but all should realize them's the
facts, and that is the situation. So, next time we all consider
challenging the police, or sheriff's deputy, keep that in mind before
embarking on mindless escalation. Of course a lot of you will wonder
what possible background I could have to suggest such things, and I
offer therefore to answer my 'criminal law phone' when you are put in
jail in my county in the bread-basket of central America. Don't worry,
my office is just south of the jail, it is the last sign you see before
going inside. Just remember the phone number. We accept collect calls
from Pentaxians.

Other than that I'm going to play with the photos I just took of my
step-father's 99th birthday party taken a few hours ago. If anything is
half good enough (which I doubt) I might post something. Dad is in a
neck-brace, because two weeks prior to today he lost his balance and
fell head-long into the wall, breaking his neck. It would have certainly
killed him except he is fortunate to be an orthopedic surgeon and
realized what had happened on the way to the floor. He held is head in
place with both hands, and told the caregivers not to move him until a
neck-brace was obtained. Oh, he was a Nikon guy, but I'm bringing him
around. (Yes, he was lying face-down on the bedroom floor, and told the
caregiver "I've broken my neck. I've got a bi-lateral cervical fracture.
Don't move me until you call 911 and get a neck brace." How's that for
thinking quickly?)

Re: Using an older Pentax flash in AF Assist mode (only)

2011-08-02 Thread Morris Galloway
The Current Pentax Digital Flashes AF360 and the AF540 have Spot Beams
or Focus Assist. The Spot Beam Focus Assist is described on page 55 of
the AF360 Manual. (Ahem.)
The first two are available NEW and also Used several places. And they
are Pretty! Which should count for something.
If memory serves me, which it sometimes does, the older AF500 also has a
Spot Beam or Focus Assist. And, because it is Not Digital, the AF500 is
available Plenty Cheap! (Powerful and Cheap and Uses AA batteries.
What's not to like?) If you want to use the Strobe Function, then
These Flashes all have Plenty of Horsepower, unless you are in Carlsbad
Caverns. I figure about 160 on the 540 and 150 on the 500 and the
smaller 360 cranks out about 90 Guide Number with a 50mm or 108 with the
ubiquitous 85mm lens. That should be enough for most uses.

And did I mention they have Spot Beams? When in doubt, I like to

Throwing Off the Cloak to Protect my Jags

2011-07-13 Thread Morris Galloway

That does it!
Somebody slurred Jaguars!

Here to tell you my Jaguar Sedan XJ8 and my Roadster (XKR), both late
model, are at least as reliable as a Benz. (Own them too.) In fact,
since Jaguar was bought by some Yankees (Ford) their customer
satisfaction has gone through the roof, and warranty claims fallen
drastically. The Sedan is supremely dignfied. The Roadster? Sexy,
well-made, non-fussy, occasionally causing a way-to-young girl to smile
and take a second look at the driver. The Roadster is F A S T when the
13 psi Belt Driven Supercharger starts to whine, in conjunction with the
second fuel pump and the second air intake opening up. And yet
surprisingly, supremely comfortable on my daily 60 mile commute.
Granted that Before Ford (November 1989) , while Still Using Lucas
(Defunct 1996) and Smiths and other sub-standard British electrical
components, the Jags were as bad as, as, as, MG's, Triumphs, Austins,
and the rest of the horrid English cars foisted upon the public.

And the dinner-table comment is the Ford man went to Lucas et. al. and
told them their Mean Time Between Failure would have to exceed that
experienced by Bosch for Mercedes or Jag would quit and go German.
"What? You'll abandon British Electrical Genuis?" "Yup." Lucas couldn't
meet specs -- and suddenly the Jags had a fighting chance. Lucas is,
after all, is the reason Brits drink their beer warm -- Lucas made
refrigerators. At least they are now gobbled up by Goodrich and TRW and
now defunct. But the Jag lives on.
And before I leave my soapbox, 'hand-crafted' (as in Rolls-Royce)
only means that the parts didn't fit properly until the mechanic took a
hammer, crowbar and coarse file (I could use the tool's name, but it is
naughty) to the d_mned assembly to force it together. Something I have
never had to due on properly made cars. So, that calls for the
Rolls-Royce ancient joke -- the triumph of files and crowbars over
engineering.

Harumph!

Galloway, opinionated old Pentaxian. Probably have to change my name now

re: Ghia or Volkswagen's 'Custom Body'

2011-07-03 Thread Morris Galloway
De-Lurking again regarding that well-known hot-rod, the Volkswagen
flat-four engined 1.1 liter (later increased incrementally by a tenth of
a liter from time to time.)

It was/is rumored the little chassis housed a power-house of an engine.
A Tire-Shredder in acceleration. (PDML 2 July, 4:47 pm. "A stock'74 Ghia
would do 0-60 faster than a Corvette of the same era.") Sure wasn't
that way where I lived in the 1950's, and 60's and '70's. The VW Ghia
or Beetle could barely pull it's shadow away from the curb. (O.K. Kerb
for some.) The 'VW Werkes' published 21.30 seconds zero to 100 kmp, or
62mph for the Ghia in 74, and top speed of the Ghia, 138 km/h or about
84. Hmm. Compared to the oft cited slow-basic-stock 195 hp 1974 'Vette
was around 9 or 10 seconds. With a stock-basic 350 CI engine (Or 5.7
liters.) Most people optioned up to the 250 hp in 1974. My father and I
owned Three brand-spanking New Corvettes between 1963 and the early
80's. Granted the U.S.A. began to limit nasty auto emissions around
1968, but the limits affected everybody, even VW and Karmann. Every
auto suffered a performance decrease. If someone owned a 7 to 8 second
Stock '74 Ghia they need to call the Guinness world record people.

At the age of 17, with a Brand New Corvette Sting Ray 1963, I'm here to
state with the 4.11 rear end, 11.5 to one compression ratio and
advertised 365 hp, All Stock, you could see 146 indicated. And 0-60 in
the sixes. And yes, the tires wore out pretty quickly when inflated to
40 psi. And yes, the high school / college girls fell all over you. Ahem.

Oh, Red. Convertible. And No. Never got beaten by a Karmann Ghia
bodied Volkswagen, stock or otherwise. Remember 'There is no substitute
for cubic inches' which may have been first attributed to Big Daddy Don
Garlits or maybe Mickey Thompson. The 1974 Corvette, 350 CI, or 5.7
liters and up to 454; the VW started in 1938 with 1.1 and ended with
1.6 liters when production stopped.

Now, shutting up and getting ready for Choir Practice. And Re-Lurking.

Speaking for myself, I found a smile sneaking up the corners of my mouth

Finally, there I was, with a big grin. And more pictures to come.

The website says the photog is a Canonite, with a Big New Expensive
$2,400 Canon, and (apparently) a tripod, as the photos are all
self-portraits.

And she never misses a day, it seems, posting a bright, nice, photo of
herself suspended in space.

Mildly amusing at first, then wildly amusing. To me.

Be careful when dealing with KEH. I used to be a big fan of theirs and
made frequent purchases of Pentax gear.

Until two years ago.

That was when I bought two items in rapid succession that arrived

permission to ship back the items.

They simply ignored both requests, ignored mailed requested, ignored
telephone calls. All requests for permission to return were done within
their 'grace period.'

You'd think they would be more responsive to a guy that offices right
across the street from the Courthouse, but even a letter on my "Official

Still ...

In other words, don't trust them unless you are willing to give up and

English, American version

2010-02-01 Thread Morris Galloway

"I suggest" versus "Perhaps we could proceed"
One American's analysis.

Among general professionals in the central U.S.

If Boris Liberman is in upper management speaking to those in middle
management, then "I suggest" would have 10% more of the Imperative.
Among peers it would be perceived as an option awaiting the opportunity
for other options to be presented.
If used by middle management to upper management it might be considered
brash or bold.

Among Lawyers it would simply be considered as an option. But then we
are a rather thick-skinned profession.

Wow! Perhaps English is becoming a language similar to Diplomatic
French. Zut Alors!

The Boys and Men of the little town tried for two nights to ride the

Shot w/ K10D, 50-135 DA*, and a whomping big potato masher dialed down

B&H Gives K-7 a nice little review. (Delurking.)

2009-08-04 Thread Morris Galloway
B&H, the big New York operation, has given the K-7 a nice little
Test-Drive.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/find/newsLetter/PentaxK-7-Test-Drive.jsp

I'm not shilling for them, but I do trade with them, Adorama, and KEH
more frequently than I should. (Lost the main dealer in our area this
last Xmas.) I'm simply reporting what I regard as Good News.

And the latest edition of Mozilla Thunderbird still shows a bajillion Carriage Returns on your posts -- which go on for page after page.

This is so Important I must de-lurk.

Cotty is on to something.
But, before we invest, these questions must be answered.
Can She Sew on a Button and stay cheerful?
Can She Iron a Shirt at the last minute without complaint?
   Does She Nag?
Is She "property" or will She Demand Alimony when her battery
begins to wear out?

Re: My next DSLR Wishlist

2009-02-13 Thread Morris Galloway
2009/2/14 Jostein @AlunFoto wrote a wish list:

Jostein: You have obviously been giving your Wish List a lot of thought.

And I find you really reflect my limited experience with the K10/K20 group.
Versus Nikon: Yes it is quieter. Yes it is smaller. Which is nice.
But we're Still Guys. We Want More Speed! More fps Speed is Good. As
for 5 fps -- Why not go a little faster? After all, the LX was capable
of 5 fps, and that was -- gulp -- 30 years ago. Haven't we made any
speed advancements in a generation? Don't even have to flap that mirror
-- certainly if a splitter can work for the light meter, a splitter feed
to the finder, even very dim, just usable, would be acceptable while
burning up the Pixels at some prodigious rate.
Yes -- better storage in the BG -- and while we're at it, put a place to
hold the viewfinder blind! And the flash cap! [They used to provide
parking places on the neck-straps -- I know: I've got some Now old --
Once New Pentax cameras.] Who hasn't misplaced those little items?
Don't even need to be waterproof. Just storage. And space for more SD
cards -- that can be quickly accessed. And is marked -- Used -- or
Ready. [That could be on the neck-strap too, like the old velcro'd
film holders we all had / Have.] As for the SSD drive --- hm? My
experience with drives, from the torpid 30 meg drive on my first IBM XT,
has been that they are great when they work, yet failure is past
catastrophic. But, perhaps the MTBF can be pushed out so far as to make
that palatable.

Haven't done much long-exposure stuff, (my longest being 30 seconds),
but if you want to expand the features to longer exposures -- do we need
a more sensitive meter -- like the LX's going down to an EV of -6, or
better? (K20D is 0-19. LX was -6.5 to 20) Or a meter capable of
reading off the actual media (CCD -- or whatever comes next) -- like
the LX's so when things change during that 5 minute exposure, we're not
left holding the proverbial bag. Don't tell me it why that can't be
done. I've heard we put a coupla guys on the moon a while back.

(Hm. I keep going back to the LX as a benchmark. What's up with that?)

You have set forth a great outline. Great thoughts. Hope Pentax Japan
reads our list.

Now -- if we could just get the guys in Japan to give us two things:
1) Quality control on DA* Lenses! 2) Some Fast Big 'n Long Glass,
starting with the 60-250 they promised so long ago. Then a FAST 300, a
Fast 400, a Fast 500. That would be in effect a 750 on our sensor.
WoW! Those Babies would durn sure shut up the Nikon Guys at our little
High School Rasslin' Matches. And start up some interesting
conversations when us country boys go to Capital City to take pictures
at the Zoo and rubber-neck around Downtown.

Just some thoughts from a guy who can't take good pictures, but loves to
buy the gear and takes snap shots that amuse me.

The Ghost Appears!

2009-02-07 Thread Morris Galloway

OMG
Adorama has a listing for the Pentax SMCP-DA* 60-250mm with a `Buy It
Now' box.
Of course, being Adorama, they've got to screw something up.
They say it is an f:/0.

(Now that would be One Fast Lens.)

Their price is $1,399.95. And Wait! There's More! Free Shipping!
The link: http://www.adorama.com/PX60250AFD.html

I clicked the Box. It took the order. Then it asked me to pay for it.

I just looked in my wallet. I don't have the dough. : ( Of course,
some of you rich semi-pros do.

So, next week, tell us what it is like.

From Galloway, constant lurker who will de-lurk for a moment.
Golly Gee! Want to know more about the Type 57 Bug, see it inside,
outside, under the hood, being driven down the road by a real guy? The
very well-paid American comedian Jay Leno owns one. Actually he owns several
Bugattis, and several of most everything else. And you can see his
little movie about his Atlantic at Jay Leno's Garage, his website. Here
is the link:
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.shtml?vid=272756.
Leno seems like an 'all-right' fellow: He likes fast cars, fast
motorcycles, and cats. Don't know is he likes Pentaxes.

Oh, and Happy New Year, and thanks for all the joy you able photogs have
brought to me through the years!

Local store scaring me silly regarding Pentax

2008-10-24 Thread Morris Galloway
Reports of sluggish camera sales started quite a disruptive thread some
time ago, and have no wish to
start that up again, but ... is Pentax cutting back on Sales Reps in the
U.S.? Now? Just before the Big Rush? Or is that just my salesperson's
rumor to get me to buy the 300* and the 200* NOW, before December
24th?
