Re: Film and cameras

2010-10-16 Thread Nick Wright
Film is just something different.

I tried to go back to digital, I just couldn't ... didn't make me feel
the same way film does.

That MZ-S, I always wanted one of those. Surprised now to find them
still going for $800-900. Can't believe they've held their value that
well.

Re: Ilford XP2 question

2010-10-16 Thread Nick Wright
Godfrey, thank you for an awesome post. That is very good information.

FWIW, I did some more digging around on Flickr etc and found two
examples of XP2 shot at iso50 ... the results weren't horrible. I can
find the links again if you like.

I've been expending quite a bit of energy researching traditional b&w
films lately. But I've been shooting almost all XP2 since I can get it
processed at a one-hour place. I'm starting to think that I'll just
keep shooting XP2. I really like the results I'm getting. Though I'm
not very happy with one-hour lab scanning, I'll just have to get my
own scanner.

I've been looking at ND filters too. Any particular brand
recommendations there? I've always been pleased with the B+W filters
I've had.

Walter, I'm very sorry to be tempting you into more expenditures. ;;-D

Re: Ilford XP2 question

2010-10-16 Thread Nick Wright
Charles, wow ... I've never even seen a roll of XP1. I've always
assumed it must have existed at one point, seeing the new stuff is
labeled XP2, but wow.

Jeffery, you might want to give XP2 another shot. Some of my favorite
shots are on it taken in very bright sunlight. http://flic.kr/p/7REseX

I love it and shoot almost nothing else right now.

I'm just curious if anyone here has tried the iso 50 thing.

I just finished up my last roll of it, but I'm hoping to make it to
town tomorrow and get some more.

I'll post samples at the different ISOs when I get a chance.

Ilford XP2 question

2010-10-16 Thread Nick Wright
There is really only one thing I truly miss about digital ... the
ability to change ISO on the fly.

Most of the time I prefer to shoot in lower light and I like my iso400
film, but sometimes I find myself out shooting in bright daylight.

Not a terrible problem except I'd rather not always be shooting at f/16.

Then tonight something pinged in my memory. I seemed to recall having
heard you could shoot Ilford's XP2 at different ISOs on the same roll
and get it developed normally.

So I hopped over to Ilford's Web site and sure enough, according to
them you can shoot XP2 at any ISO from 50 to 3200, even varying from
frame to frame, have it developed normally and get good results.

Now everything I know about film developing etc is screaming at me
that this can not be true.

I found very little talk on the net-at-large about it, so I turn to
the all-wise PDML for help.

Has anyone ever done this? Does it actually work?

Re: darkroom wish list

2010-10-03 Thread Nick Wright
My plan exactly.

Adorama does still sell changing bags in two different sizes. Not much
money. Great for the person who wants to develop film but has no dark
places to do it ... like me!

In the past I've used both darkrooms and changing bags. I'm
comfortable either way.

Now doing color in dip and dunk tanks where you have to spend the
entire development cycle in the dark? That I never cared for.

Walter, eyewash and emetic? Dare I ask why you're drinking the stuff
and putting it in your eyes?

JCO, I won't be printing for now. I have absolutely no space for a
real darkroom. We're living in a 30-foot camper while we tear down and
rebuild our house (but I'm definitely making space for a darkroom in
the new house), so safelights etc aren't needed at this point. I'll
just have to be happy scanning my negs.

Been poking around and found some info that indicates one roll of film
takes 300ml of solution. But it seemed to me they were talking about
the plastic paterson tanks. Will a single roll in a stainless tank
take that much solution?

Jeffery, thanks for mentioning the timer, can't believe I forgot that.

black and white film.

Seeing as its been quite a number of years since I've done this I

Tank

Reels

mixing paddles

thermometer

two graduates (one for developer, one for fixer; as I will only mix
what is needed for the batch I'm working on) ... what size do you all
think I should get for these. If I'm only ever going to do two rolls
of film at a time, will a 150ml grad be enough or should I go for the

obviously developer and fixer.

photoflo and squeege, film clips.

WTB: Camera bag

2010-09-17 Thread Nick Wright
I'm looking for a very small camera bag. Older the better as long as
it's still usable.

Looking for something to fit my Pentax Program Plus with 50mm
attached, a couple rolls of film, a filter or two and maybe (but not
necessarily) a second small lens.

I don't want velcro, I do want some padding though. I'm looking to
avoid the modern, flashy-looking bags I see on the market. I'm also
looking to avoid spending a lot of money. I loved my Domke f-803, but
recently sold it because it was too big. I imagine a Domke F-5xa would
probably be perfect. But I don't want to spend that much, and I don't
care for velcro. Unless someone's got one of those they want to sell
cheap?? ;-)

If there were a used camera store within a hundred miles I'd be there
digging through their bargain bin, but there's not so I figured I'd
ask you all to see what you have hiding forgotten in the bottom of
your closets! ;-)

So if you've got something you want to get rid of, drop me a line with
a snapshot of the bag.

Thanks!

The Domke F-803 is an excellent messenger style bags.

Sick of cheap scans

2010-03-18 Thread Nick Wright
I have been fighting with bad scans for quite a while now.

By bad I mean images that when viewed at 100% look as though shot with
a cheap digicam.

So today I took a roll of film to a "pro" lab in the big city and paid
about three times as much as the discount stores charge to get some
"good" scans from my roll of film.

Imagine my disappointment when I get the CD in the machine and
discover the same kind of cheap looking scan.

Here's an example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalingprose/4443788489/sizes/o/

Turns out the sharpening method I used exaggerated the effect, but I'm
leaving it as such for the time being so everyone can see what I'm
referring to.

See especially in the dark areas? That's not grain, that's digital
noise ... unless I am completely mistaken.

And I'm really sick of it. Is there no one left that makes good scans
from a roll of film? Help!

Pentax P80

2009-10-21 Thread Nick Wright
I'm looking into getting an extremely small p&s for daily carry.

My primary interest so far has been the Canon SD780.

But I've been looking at Pentax's offerings in this area today and I'm
interested in the P80.

Does anyone have any experience with this model? Can you share sample
images and video?

One very important feature I want this camera to have is an easily
used exposure compensation function. Canon's is a single button press
which brings up a graph. I can't seem to find how the Pentax's works.
Anyone familiar with the setup?

I'm also very interested in the quality of the HD video. And the
quality of the high ISO settings. Not looking for perfect, but am
looking for decent.

Thanks.

So I've been thinking ...

2009-05-27 Thread Nick Wright
Uh oh, watch out!

Anyway.

I seem to recall something recently about a Pentax patent detailing a
lens mount with two bayonets.

And now we have Pentax maybe putting full-frame 35mm digital lenses
back in their roadmap.

So I was thinking, would it be possible that the new Pentax 645 has a
mount that allows you to attach both 645 and 35mm FF lenses without an
adaptor?

And then I thought, the camera could automatically sense which kind of
lens was on the camera. If a 645 lens was attached the sensor was in
"645 mode" but if a 35mm lens was attached then it reduced itself to a
24x35mm frame and appropriate resolution.

Would that be possible? Surely it would be. The better question would
be, is it feasible?

Why would Pentax make such a commitment to APSc lenses only to come

Re: K-7 composition shift question

2009-05-20 Thread Nick Wright
8-11mm isn't a terrible lot of movement.

I wonder how difficult it would be to implement a sensor shift of that
magnitude in say a medium format digital body?

Can you imagine that? It wouldn't give you tilt control (but perhaps
that wouldn't be that hard to put in either?) but just think being
able to apply shift to any lens you put on the body?

As much as I love to shoot old buildings I would think that would be a
huge feature.

So this new feature that allows you to shift the sensor for composition.

Would that allow you to use the sensor in a similar (though very
limited) way as a shift lens? Could you use that function to correct a
slight amount of keystoning in architecture for example?

Re: PESO: Lightning

That was a 10 second exposure.

When I shoot lighting I'll set the camera up and set it for a long
exposure and just keep shooting till I get something. I've never felt
the desire to spend the money for an electronic cable release, they're
just too expensive as little as I would use one.

PESO: Lightning

2009-05-16 Thread Nick Wright
The past several months I've been trying to figure out who I am as a
photographer. Turns out there wasn't anything really to figure out,
just took me a while to figure that out.

That said, I've started a new photo blog dedicated to the photos that
I've been making all the while I've been trying to figure out what I
didn't need to figure out.

You can get there using the same old address, I forwarded it to the
new blog. http://www.nickdavidwright.com/

But in honor of my newly realized mission statement I dug out some old
work and posted it to the blog as well.

I apologize that this is from my in-between Pentax period (also known
as the Dark Ages [i.e.- Canon]). But one of my favorite lightning
pictures:

Thanks for your time and for putting up with my wiffle-waffling.

Re: Netbook doubles as an imagetank

2009-05-13 Thread Nick Wright
As cheap as memory cards are (taking into account that they are
reusable), you could just copy the cards to the netbook and then mail
the card home.

That would save you the extra step of toting around a DVD burner, and the DVDs.

Plus I'm guessing it might be a bit cheaper to mail an sd card
compared to a DVD.

Re: PESO: Market's Open

2009-05-10 Thread Nick Wright
The market itself isn't a business. It's a non-profit organization
that has worked with the city to allow independent local producers a
place to meet and sell their goods.

That said, the local independent producers are licensed businesses.
And most of them are doing rather well considering the fear-mongering
being played out in the national media.

I believe that a key ingredient of a strong economy is small-scale,
local, diversified businesses. So much of my personal work focuses on
folks working towards that end. I also believe that small-scale local
agriculture is extremely important, so the market allows me a chance
to photograph both the economic and agricultural sides of that
equation.

For what it is, no it is not that much.

And no, I'm not particularly interested in seeing quality comparisons.
My el-cheapo 18-55 lens regularly knocks my socks off in terms of
image quality. I'm sure the $1,200 lens will be just fine.

Sure and I know that the 70-210A are great lenses. But they aren't
brand-new, they aren't weather sealed and they aren't autofocus.

I wonder if anyone would care to figure out how much the A70-210 went
for brand-new and adjust that for inflation? I'd bet there wouldn't be
that big a difference.

I don't think it's all that terrible much.

The Canon 70-200/4L IS runs about $1,100.

Both lenses are weather-sealed f/4. The Canon has IS built in. But the
Pentax offers 10mm wider and 50mm longer range.

If I were still shooting for newspapers I would be chomping at the bit
to get this lens.

I'm sorry you don't like Flickr. I'll admit it has a few shortcomings.
But I've decided that overall I really like it.

One of the features I like the most is the flash slideshow function.
Let's you see the photos full screen. And it also allows you to stop
the slideshow and flip through the photos using the left and right
buttons.

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
That's interesting about the white instead of grey reference. I just
assumed that it could be either grey or white like the other brands'.
But it does seemed to have worked fine.

Yeah, I wasn't happy entirely with the noise. Most of those were shot
at ISO3200. Especially the tighter shots where I was using the
135/3.5. Kept the aperture at 5.6 for a little DOF, gave me a shutter
of 1/100th which turns out was just ever so slightly underexposed. If
I had exposed better the noise wouldn't have been so bad. Also the way
that iPhoto handles the cropping is not conducive to reducing noise.

As far as noise reduction software is concerned, I've tried most of
them and have never been happy at all with the results.

But then I am the guy who likes to shoot faster film because I think
grain is a nice feature. :)

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
I'm assuming you mean Auto white balance and not ISO, right?

In my version of iPhoto (one gen from the latest) the WB function is
one of its strongest features. You can choose an eyedropper function
to click a white or grey point. And you can also adjust temperature
and tint. Exactly like the demo version of Photoshop I've been playing
with.

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
Not having to fiddle with it during processing is a huge functional
advantage in my book.

I know since it's captured in RAW the WB is not locked in, but it
still shows up in the RAW converter at the setting I shot it. I could
change it if I liked. But I really prefer to spend as little time as
possible playing with my pictures in the computer.

Also the colors of the photos I shot with the custom WB are "right" to
me. I did not have to adjust the color at all. I adjusted the exposure
and contrast in iPhoto but that was it. The photos that I did not set
my WB required a lot of tweaking and I still don't like the way they
look.

Re: OT - I'm Safe Now

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
My problem with those little bottles of hand sanitizer is that it only
kills 99.9% of germs.

The manufacturers tout this as a feature (they proclaim it right on
the bottles), but I see it as a liability.

Because that 0.1% of germs that survive to reproduce will logically be
the strongest most horrible versions of the germ.

It's natural selection speeded up many times. We destroy the weakest
strains of the germ, and leave the strongest to continue spreading.

And meanwhile our bodies never develop any kind of natural immunity.

Re: Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
These were shot in RAW.

Shooting in RAW does not negate the benefits of setting a custom white balance.

Custom White balance

2009-04-28 Thread Nick Wright
I shot a presentation on the animals of Australia that was held at our
public library last night.

I wasn't happy with the results from the auto white balance and after
a few frames I decided to set a custom white balance.

And I'm really impressed. Pentax's custom white balance is so much
easier to set than Canon's.

With Canon you shoot your reference shot. Then find the menu for
setting the custom balance, then find the reference image you shot and
select it. Then you select the custom white balance option.

I had never read the manual on the Pentax white balance, so I just
selected custom WB from the WB menu. It asked if I wanted to shoot a
reference image, so I found a kid at the event with a light grey shirt
and took a picture. The camera asked if the image was okay and I hit
okay and that was that.

The photos from the event are here: http://www.nickdavidwright.com/page40.html

The lady with the parakeet was the first image shot after setting the
custom WB, everything before was shot on auto and "fixed in post."

I didn't have to tweak the colors of the images shot on custom at all.
I love it.

Re: Website revisions

2009-04-26 Thread Nick Wright
Wow, I noticed that file was loading slowly, I never thought to see
how big it was.

Turns out however my editor makes the drops shadows made it that big.

Turn off the drop shadow function the size goes down to about 150k.

I'll miss the drop shadows ... but not that much.

Does it load any better for you all now?

As to the difference between horizontal and vertical I'm just not sure
what to do about that.

I want my photos as big as they can be. And verticals just don't fit
well on a computer screen.

I think I'm going to have to seriously consider switching over to a
square format. ;;)

As to the images on the fine art page.

I use a program called Shutterbug to build my website. It's an
excellent program and I really enjoy how it works ... mostly.

It does have quite a number of quirks though.
