My best guess is this is around about Feb 20, 1989 or so. If memory
serves Ektar 25 was introduced in January & according to weather
records, we had 4 inches of snow in Raleigh on Feb 19.

I noticed the birds were hanging around a fallen limb at the rear edge
of my property, about 50 feet from my house. I hung up my army poncho
up under my back porch to make a blind, set up my tripod and poked the
lens out through the opening for the head.

It was probably taken with an LX & a Soligor F/8 Cat lens w/ Pentax-K
T-mount. It's not real sharp.

Anyway, it's the only one of the kind I remember seeing.

I've never seen an oriole in my area. They are beautiful birds, though.

We do get lots of indigo buntings. Unfortunately, the tree I used for

Nevertheless -- love the shot, Stan!

An addition this year to our list of sightings are a couple of indigo buntings.
I haven’t been able to sneak into a good shooting position yet without scaring
them away. One of the buntings and a cardinal were sharing the bush by one of

Thanks, Chris.

I actually thought about upgrading the pickups when I first brought it
home. There's a huge difference between those in my Strat and the
wide-range humbuckers in my Tele. But, I've grown pretty fond of the
tone I get from the Strat when played clean and I'm not sure I want to
change it. I was thinking at first about getting a pre-wired pick guard

I'm going to give it a little more time after a good setup. If I do

Hi Bruce!

Thanks for the welcome back. I've been really dedicating myself to
learning to play the guitar for a while now and thoroughly enjoying it.
It's a wonderful new pursuit for me, in that it's something I can study
and do regardless of the weather, or where I happen to be. I've even
written my first song, which I've been working on for the past several
days. I even went out and got one of those ZOOM H1's that Mark Roberts
suggested I get a while back to help in the process.

As for the whammy bar, it's safely ensconced in the case. I decided to
"deck" the tremolo the night I got my Strat. I'm just not much of a
tremolo guy, so I thought I'd do that to maybe get a little more sustain
and to help keep it in tune a little better.

You know, I just might have to learn to play Free Bird -- at which point
I'll send you an .mp3 recorded on my ZOOM! ;)

Must be the reverb ;-)

I'm just about to 'upgrade' my cheapy mando. I got a set of K&K twin
internal pickups and installed them already - hardest part was drilling
out the tailpiece. The jack plug socket fits through it, and into the
interior through the woodwork, and you glue the pickups near the f-
holes. Actually a lot easier than it sounds. Plus got some Grover
machine heads to replace the no-name cheapies, and a set of D'Addario
EXP74 strings. Can't wait to put it all back together on Friday, a day off.

Only got a little Fender practice amp, but it gonna get a lil loud round
here ;-)

That sounds like quite an upgrade, Cotty! I'm glad it was easier than it
sounds, because I don't think I could bring myself to undertake
something like that. I was tempted to try to do the setup on my Strat,
but decided I'd be better off just leaving it to a pro. I did deck the
tremolo on it, though. So I'm not completely averse to doing mods on
guitars. When I first brought it home and hooked into my amp, I was
seriously considering getting one of those pre-wired pick guards --

Re: GESO: Musical Enablement (4 images)

2014-02-09 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks for the tips, John.

I don't know that I'd ever get a true-blue Tele "twang" given the pickup
configuration and the difference between the contemporary and original
wide-range humbuckers without using digital effects -- which is one of
the things I really like about the Orange amps. And even using the
effects, it would likely only be a reasonable approximation, I guess.
But, to my ear at least, it gets pretty close as-is -- close enough that
the average joe wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

One of the things I've always liked about Teles is their versatility --
and this one has that in spades. I'm getting some really great crunch in
overdrive that I haven't heard from standard Tele configurations, and a
fair amount of twang when playing the bridge pickup when I pick closer
to the bridge.

I wish I had the money to drop on a more expensive amp -- hell, I'd have
a Marshall double-stack and a full array of stomp boxes if I had the
resources. I may invest in something a little more upscale down the
road, but for the time being, the Orange seems to suit my needs pretty
well. Though, I will be sure to look into the more affordable Fender
amps you mentioned.

The sad fact of the matter is that I'll likely never be good enough a
player to play a gig before an audience that could distinguish between
the sound I'm putting out and that of a standard Tele setup played in
the bridge position. But, if I ever do get that good, maybe I'll be able
to afford one of those Vox amps -- and I'll let you play through it any
time you want. :)

Thing is, I don't think either of them offers the kind of country
"twang" that the Telecaster is really famous for.

If that's what you want, you're probably going to want to find a Fender
amp to go with it. Fender made quite a few 40w tube combo amps over the
years. I like the Vibrolux Reverb myself, but they're getting hard to
find & kind of pricy.

But you can find the Hot Rod Deluxe & Blues Deluxe amps at reasonable
prices. The only drawbacks I'm aware of with them is that some complain
the PC Board design has flimsy mounts for the pots & jacks.

OTOH, my current amplifier "holy grail":

Thank you, Bruce!

At first, I was only really interested in a standard-configuration Tele
-- mostly for the world-renowned twang.

But, I came across this guitar at an *absolute steal* ($530 with
tweed-covered hardshell case -- shipped and insured) and I just could
not pass it up.

It's a guitar I'll treasure for the rest of my life, so I'm ecstatic to
have gotten it at such a great price.

I did a lot of experimenting with long exposures and/or multiple
exposures (some in-camera and some in Photoshop), both with and
without HDR processes. I'm trying to work time into my photographs
rather than capture a "decisive moment" like HCB.

This first shot was one that I planned for and which turned out even
better than I'd hoped. I set up in a tube station with the intention
of combining multiple show-shutter-speed shots of the people on the
platform with a train coming into the station. Lacking a tripod, I
braced the camera on something solid (I forget exactly what), zone
focused and waited for people to walk in front of the camera and for a
train to arrive. Unusually and unfortunately there were few people
coming through the station at that time but I did get two shots that I
thought would work well together. I combined both images in Photoshop,
converted to B&W (which took a lot of fiddling with the color sliders
to get looking "just right") and added some noise. Here's the result:

I quite dig it, Mark!

Love the sense of motion -- both in the oncoming train and the eerily
vague human form.

I understand your point, an image is a reflection/rendering of a
narrow reality at that point in space-time in the direction the camera
was pointing. :)

For "photo-journalism" to say an image is untruthful or has no
integrity because an object is removed, is fallacious at best and
hypocritical at worst, because a like image taken from a slightly
different vantage point would also eliminate that object and still be
considered truthful. If the object removed was done so with the intent
of altering the message, that's different.

Subtraction is the basic process of composition. Other alterations or
additions have more to do with changing the integrity of the image. I
have a real problem with additions or moving of objects in an image.
Alterations to achieve a desired effect, be it exposure, contrast,
saturation, are in many respects the bread and butter of
non-documentary photography.

While I understand that one can defined the modification of an image

But what if he just darkened some portion of the photo with an object in

on a part of the photograph.

I understand the problem when a person is removed from a group photo,
but that's totally different.
I think in this particular case, they are making a mountain out of a
molehill.

That was my reaction as well. I understand that AP has strict
guidelines but to completely ban him from working for them seems
harsh. I would have thought some lesser penalty, such as banning him
for six months or so, would have got the massage across.

I've never been a fan of "zero tolerance" policies, as they tend to
absolve people in positions of authority of any accountability for
making stupid decisions. "Just following orders . . ." and all that.

That said, in this kind of situation, I can see where the penalty is
plausibly appropriate, if only for discouraging would-be AP
photojournalists from thinking they're a little more clever than the
last guy who got busted. It's not that I have no sympathy for Conteras;
it is a pretty raw deal. But, at the same time, I can understand where
the AP's photo editors might chafe at the notion that a photographer
would take it upon himself to sneak one past them. Where Conteras
asserts that he thought it might be a distracting element for consumers,
the editors were probably suspicious that he thought it would be a
distracting element to them.

Thanks for the clarification, John.

From what I gather, the reissue humbuckers are just a tad warmer than

Fender had a bit of a spate of humbuckers in the early 70s. The Deluxe
also had them from '72. Here's mine, an original '73 model with the
Marshall custom shop '67 Bluesbreaker amp that I won in the local
hospice raffle:
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/MarshallAmp/slides/_IMG4720.html

You're right, the humbuckers still produce the Tele twang in the
middle selector position and the thinline hollow body adds a bit of
acoustic resonance as well. I think you'll enjoy it!

Chris

Holy cow, Chris! That is one hell of a nice little setup you have there.

You must have been pretty happy when they drew your name for that amp.

The top slides open to reveal a complex of internal tubage for storing

The hat safely supports the weight of any stout gentleman who may care to stand
upon it in order to raise himself above the common herd of pressmen, thus to
secure an elevated vantage point.

The topmost part of the hat is fitted with an interchangeable mounting system
in the centre by which means it may be conveniently attached to an objective,
providing a practical and convenient 'lens-hood' with non-reflecting inner
surfaces of matt silk velour.

The hat band is especially tailored to hold memorandum cards on which the

First production run will be coming off the 3-D printers any time now.

I shot a wedding for a friend of mine's son and his new bride last
night. It was a bit of a last-minute deal I did on the cheap to help
out the young couple, so I didn't do a lot in the way of preparation.
Essentially, I did it all with my K-5 and the trusty ol' F 50/1.7.

This is one of my favorites so far, though I'm still going through
them. I just thought it was one of the more touching moments I've
photographed to date -- the emotionally fraught dance of the bride
and her father.

Re: PESO: A Familiar Shoulder

2014-01-13 Thread Walt
I just checked and it doesn't appear to have one. It just has the
wheel-type fastener that you turn to tighten the flash down onto the hot
shoe.

I'm sure part of the reason is that I don't like to tighten it down too
much, because it's a real pain in the ass to remove if you do. It's just
one of those things I have to remind myself to be on the lookout for
while I'm using it, I reckon.

That's odd about the shoe slippage. Did you rotate the locking lever
to the right? When you do that a pin drops from the flash and slides

Maybe your 3rd-party flash doesn't have that lever.

I have to say, the flash performed pretty damned well given all the negative

times throughout the night. Other than that, I think it did a pretty
commendable job overall, from what I've seen of the photos I've gone

I've said it before, the K5, as good as it is, was held back by QC
problems because of Hoya. The K5II series is what the K5 should have
been off the hop, had Hoya not built the thing as cheaply as they felt
they could get away with.

Regarding AF: The K3 is more accurate by yards, and is significantly
faster as well. The 17 point AF is nice, but should be more spread
out, or should have more focus points. I suspect this was a choice
Ricoh made to ensure there was still an upgrade path from the K3, as a
K3 with a 60 or so point AF would be just about the end of the line.
Focus point selection in Liveview is much wider, and LiveView AF seems
fast enough. Certainly it is as fast as the PDAF systems from a couple
of generations ago.
More and more, I am using Liveview rather than the viewfinder in the
studio. I find that being separated from the camera makes the subjects
more at ease than dealing with a photographer who looks like Patrick
Stewart dressed as a Borg.

Interesting food for thought, Bill.

It certainly sounds like I'd be deliriously happy with the K-3, and I

the K-3 files just fine. (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 6 Gig RAM.) A little
slower to render previews, but not too bad overall.

I'm wondering if I'd be better off just getting the improved auto-focus of a

I'm pretty sure the K-3 is a big leap over even the K-5 II, though I
never had opportunity to A-B them. Just going by reviews and my own

Re: Goodbye, Cameras

What gets me about this story, and the many others in the same vein, is
that they all seem to completely ignore the importance of optics in
photography.

I can't imagine anyone who cares about photography enough to spend money
on a 77/1.8 Ltd. suddenly saying to themselves, "You know what? Screw
that. I'm getting an iPhone. That'll be good enough."

For the technically inclined

K3, 20-40 lens (which is turning out to be a bit of an odd beast) at

f/4.5 at 1/25th sec., ISO 1600.
