I've never seen an oriole in my area. They are beautiful birds, though. We do get lots of indigo buntings. Re: PESO: Speaking of guitars
Thanks, Chris. I actually thought about upgrading the pickups when I first brought it home. There's a huge difference between those in my Strat and the wide-range humbuckers in my Tele. But, I've grown pretty fond of the tone I get from the Strat when played clean and I'm not sure I want to change it. I was thinking at first about getting a pre-wired pick guard with some hotter Fender pickups, or maybe some Seymour-Duncan Hotrails. I'm going to give it a little more time after a good setup. Re: PESO: Speaking of guitars
Hi Bruce! Thanks for the welcome back. I've been really dedicating myself to learning to play the guitar for a while now and thoroughly enjoying it. It's a wonderful new pursuit for me, in that it's something I can study and do regardless of the weather, or where I happen to be. I've even written my first song, which I've been working on for the past several days. I even went out and got one of those ZOOM H1's that Mark Roberts suggested I get a while back to help in the process. As for the whammy bar, it's safely ensconced in the case. I decided to "deck" the tremolo the night I got my Strat. I'm just not much of a tremolo guy, so I thought I'd do that to maybe get a little more sustain and to help keep it in tune a little better. You know, I just might have to learn to play Free Bird -- at which point I'll send you an .mp3 recorded on my ZOOM! ;) -- Walt On 5/6/2014 7:18 PM, Bruce Walker wrote: Welcome back, Walt! Re: GESO: Musical Enablement (4 images)
Thanks for the tips, John. I don't know that I'd ever get a true-blue Tele "twang" given the pickup configuration and the difference between the contemporary and original wide-range humbuckers without using digital effects -- which is one of the things I really like about the Orange amps. And even using the effects, it would likely only be a reasonable approximation, I guess. But, to my ear at least, it gets pretty close as-is -- close enough that the average joe wouldn't be able to tell the difference. One of the things I've always liked about Teles is their versatility -- and this one has that in spades. I'm getting some really great crunch in overdrive that I haven't heard from standard Tele configurations, and a fair amount of twang when playing the bridge pickup when I pick closer to the bridge. I wish I had the money to drop on a more expensive amp -- hell, I'd have a Marshall double-stack and a full array of stomp boxes if I had the resources. I may invest in something a little more upscale down the road, but for the time being, the Orange seems to suit my needs pretty well. Though, I will be sure to look into the more affordable Fender amps you mentioned. The sad fact of the matter is that I'll likely never be good enough a player to play a gig before an audience that could distinguish between the sound I'm putting out and that of a standard Tele setup played in the bridge position. But, if I ever do get that good, maybe I'll be able to afford one of those Vox amps -- and I'll let you play through it any time you want. :) -- Walt On 2/8/2014 3:15 PM, John wrote: Lately, I really like the Blackstar line of combo amps. I bought a HT-1R as a travel & practice amp. It's plenty loud even at 1 Watt. I think both companies (Orange & Blackstar) were founded by former Marshall techs. Thing is, I don't think either of them offers the kind of country "twang" that the Telecaster is really famous for. If that's what you want, you're probably going to want to find a Fender amp to go with it. Fender made quite a few 40w tube combo amps over the years. I like the Vibrolux Reverb myself, but they're getting hard to find & kind of pricy. But you can find the Hot Rod Deluxe & Blues Deluxe amps at reasonable prices. The only drawbacks I'm aware of with them is that some complain the PC Board design has flimsy mounts for the pots & jacks. OTOH, my current amplifier "holy grail": http://www.sanyo-densi.com/dai2/power_amp/vox_ac15tb2.htm ... which are currently somewhat scarcer than hens teeth. I did a lot of experimenting with long exposures and/or multiple exposures (some in-camera and some in Photoshop), both with and without HDR processes. I'm trying to work time into my photographs rather than capture a "decisive moment" like HCB. This first shot was one that I planned for and which turned out even better than I'd hoped. I set up in a tube station with the intention of combining multiple show-shutter-speed shots of the people on the platform with a train coming into the station. Lacking a tripod, I braced the camera on something solid (I forget exactly what), zone focused and waited for people to walk in front of the camera and for a train to arrive. Unusually and unfortunately there were few people coming through the station at that time but I did get two shots that I thought would work well together. I combined both images in Photoshop, converted to B&W (which took a lot of fiddling with the color sliders to get looking "just right") and added some noise. That said, in this kind of situation, I can see where the penalty is plausibly appropriate, if only for discouraging would-be AP photojournalists from thinking they're a little more clever than the last guy who got busted. It's not that I have no sympathy for Conteras; it is a pretty raw deal. But, at the same time, I can understand where the AP's photo editors might chafe at the notion that a photographer would take it upon himself to sneak one past them. Re: OT: New Toy Enablement
Thanks, Frank! You are correct! Unless I'm mistaken, the '72 Thinline was the first Tele to come with dual humbuckers, and they were discontinued after about three years. And, based on what I've heard in demo videos, it retains a surprising amount of the Telecaster twang despite the humbuckers, but still has the warmer, throatier sound than you'd get with the standard Tele setup. -- Walt On 1/17/2014 1:43 PM, knarf wrote: Are those twin double humbuckers that I see? Re: PESO: A Familiar Shoulder
I just checked and it doesn't appear to have one. It just has the wheel-type fastener that you turn to tighten the flash down onto the hot shoe. I'm sure part of the reason is that I don't like to tighten it down too much, because it's a real pain in the ass to remove if you do. It's just one of those things I have to remind myself to be on the lookout for while I'm using it, I reckon. -- Walt On 1/13/2014 7:46 AM, Bruce Walker wrote: That's odd about the shoe slippage. I've said it before, the K5, as good as it is, was held back by QC problems because of Hoya. The K5II series is what the K5 should have been off the hop, had Hoya not built the thing as cheaply as they felt they could get away with. Regarding AF: The K3 is more accurate by yards, and is significantly faster as well. The 17 point AF is nice, but should be more spread out, or should have more focus points. I suspect this was a choice Ricoh made to ensure there was still an upgrade path from the K3, as a K3 with a 60 or so point AF would be just about the end of the line. Focus point selection in Liveview is much wider, and LiveView AF seems fast enough. Certainly it is as fast as the PDAF systems from a couple of generations ago. More and more, I am using Liveview rather than the viewfinder in the studio. I find that being separated from the camera makes the subjects more at ease than dealing with a photographer who looks like Patrick Stewart dressed as a Borg. bill Interesting food for thought, Bill. It certainly sounds like I'd be deliriously happy with the K-3, and I may even be able to foot the bill for one by the time the next flagship comes out. And in the meantime, I'm pretty content to have a camera like the K-5 to be "stuck with". -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
